The Inhibition Effects of Alkoxyl Thiourea Derivatives toward the Growth of Isolated Oscillatoria sp. from Kenyir Lake, Terengganu

In controlling eutrophication phenomenon, there were conventional methods which lead to negative effects to aquatic environment. This study was aimed to investigate the usage of synthesized thiourea compounds to inhibit the growth of Oscillatoria sp. in Kenyir lake, Terengganu, Malaysia. The inhibition effects of four eco-friendly alkoxyl thiourea derivatives compounds named as N-（（4-（decyloxy）phenyl）carbamothioyl）-4-methyl benzamide, N-（（4-（decyloxy）phenyl）carbamothioyl）-4-nitro benzamide, 4-chloro-N-（（4-（decyloxy）phenyl）carbamothioyl） benzamide and N-（（4-（decyloxy）phenyl）carbamothioyl） benzamide were examined onto the growth culture of Oscillatoria sp. These compounds were tested in 30 mL of Oscillatoria sp. cultures with different concentration of 16 μg·mL-1, 18 μg·mL-1, 20 μg·mL-1, 24 μg·mL-1 and 28 μg·mL-1respectively. The treatment flasks were supplied with an aerator for 24 hours under continuous illumination at 25 ℃. Chlorophyll-a concentration were extracted to calculate the inhibition percentage of each treatment. Overall, all these compounds showed inhibition effects towards the growth of Oscillatoria sp., with the highest inhibition of 37% by N-（（4-（decyloxy）phenyl）carbamothioyl）-4-methyl benzamide at the concentration of 18μg·mL-1. The methyl group that attach to the synthesized compound may contribute to the effectiveness of the compound which act as an algae inhibitor. However, extensive studies still need to be conducted in order to investigate the mechanism on how this compound reacts with Oscillatoria sp..

Background: Parkinson’s disease（PD） is the second most common neurodegenerative disease. Increasing evidence has demonstrated that neuroinflammation is a prominent pathological hallmark of PD. Based on this, modulation of inflammation in the brain can be offered as one of the therapeutic approach to control neuronal damage in PD. Objective: The purpose of this study was to study the effect of the brain preconditioning with single low dose of LPS on inflammatory profile in 6-OHDA model of PD. Methods: Before administration of 6-OHDA, animals in preconditioning group was pretreated with low dose of LPS, while vehicle group rats were preconditioned with normal saline. To clarify the neuroprotective effect of single brain LPS preconditioning, motor coordination and balance were evaluated using rotarod. In addition, the effect of the LPS preconditioning on neuronal damage were observed in the substantia nigra by using nissl staining. Finally, gene and protein expressions associated with different cascades induced by LPS preconditioning including TLR4 and inflammatory signaling pathways were analyzed using RT-PCR and Western Blot. Results: Based on the behavioral assessments, preconditioned animals performed significantly better on the behavioral performance compared to the vehicle group. Furthermore, neuroprotective effect of brain LPS preconditioning were consistent with the histological observation. In addition, our result showed that the brain LPS preconditioning reduced inflammatory response in the brain of PD rat by enhancing NFκB inhibitors and anti-inflammatory cytokines. Conclusion: Generally, reduction in inflammatory response through the brain LPS preconditioning may contribute to the induction of tolerance to neuronal damage in PD. This neuroprotection parallel the reprogramming strategy that leads to the synthesis of new markers to change molecular response against brain lesions. Flood Risk Pattern Recognition Using Chemometric Technique: A Case Study in Muda River Basin

This study constructs downscaling statistical model in analyzing the hydrological modeling in the study area which faces the risk of flood occurrence as the impact of climate change. The combination of chemometric method and time series analysis in this study show that even during the monsoon season, rainfall and stream flow are not the major contribution towards the changing of water level in the study area. Based on Correlation Test, it shows that suspended solid and water level show high correlation with p-value < 0.05. Factor Analysis being carried out to determine the major contribution to the changes of Water Level and the result show that Suspended Solid shows a strong factor pattern with value 0.829. Based on Control Chat Builder for time series analysis, the Upper Control Limit for water level and suspended solid are 7.529 m and 1947.049 tons/day and the Lower Control Limit are 6.678 m and 178.135 tons/day. This shows that human development in the area gives high impact towards climate change and risk of flood in the study area which commonly faces flood during monsoon season.

Tracing the Development of eCoPs via the eCPDelT Project:From Conception to Implementation

The implementation of the Smart schools project was one of the seven flagships＇ initiatives of the Malaysian Government aims at optimalising ICT utilisation in schools in line with Malaysia＇s aim to position the country as a globally competitive knowledge-based economy. However, research studies reported a lack of success of the project towards promoting effective ICT usage and developing teacher professionally. This situation became the impetus for the development of the e-CPDelT research project which intends to develop an online learning system based on action research and personal involvement for Smart school teachers. The model adopted is loosely based on the successful UK-based Improving the Quality of Education for All （IQEA） proiect （Ainscow et al., 1994） and the Communities of Practice （CoP）＇s approach （Wenger, 1998）. The data were obtained from the blog entries made by the 20 participating Smart schools teachers and triangulated with focus group interviews and mentor reflections. The preliminary findings revealed both internal and external problems. Drawing upon these findings, the eCPDelT learning system was designed and steps were undertaken to promote the new system. However, the response to this promotion was far from satisfactory. The paper concludes by discussing the reasons for such disappointing results and proposes a new plan of action that involves the introduction of the Critical Friends Group technique,

In many cases of wave structure interactions,three-dimensional models are used to demonstrate real-life complex environ-ments in large domain *** the seakeeping context,predicting the motion responses in the interaction of a long body resembling a ship structure with regular waves is crucial and can be *** this work,regular waves interacting with a rigid foating structure were simulated using the open-source code based on the weakly compressible smoothed par-ticle hydrodynamics(WCSPH)method,and optimal parameters were suggested for diferent wave *** displacements were computed,and their response amplitude operators(RAOs)were found to be in good agreement with experimental,numerical,and analytical *** of numerical and experimental RAOs tended to increase at low wave frequencies,particularly at amidships and near the *** addition,the instantaneous wave contours of the sur-rounding model were examined to reveal the efects of localized waves along the structure and wave *** results indicated that the motion response from the WCSPH responds well at the highest frequency range(ω>5.235 rad/s).

随着移动adhoc网络负载的增加,现有路由协议的性能将急剧下降。为适应重负载网络,本文提出了一种带宽估算模型和负载平衡技术,并结合AODV(AdhocOn-demandDistanceVectorRouting)设计了新的路由协议。同时考虑到时延因素,对新协议进一步改进。仿真表明,本文提出的协议可以提高分组传送率,降低平均端到端时延,并减少路由开销。

Microfungal Community in Sandy Beaches Located in Kedah,Pahang and Sabah,Malaysia

Microfungi are fundamental organisms help in balancing the *** aims of this study are to identify microfungi isolated from sandy beaches based on internal transcribed spacers(ITS)sequence analysis and to determine the phylogenetic relationship among the locations of sampling ***-seven isolates of microfungi were obtained from six beaches located in Kedah(Chenang Beach),Pahang(Balok Beach)and Sabah(Mamutik Island,Manukan Island,Sapi Island and Tanjung Aru Beach)to be used in this *** the finding,the highest identified species were Aspergillus species(27 isolates)followed by Trichoderma species(12 isolates),Penicillium species(10 isolates),Fusarium species(6 isolates),Bipolaris species(1 isolate)and Chaetomium species(1 isolate).ITS fragment of all isolates was amplified in within the size range of 533-658 bp.A phylogenetic tree was constructed using maximum likelihood(ML)method;the isolates were grouped into three clades according to their *** conclusion,diverse microfungi isolated from sandy beach soil depicting 19 species were *** studies are highly recommended to focus on intra-and interspecies diversity based on microsatellite markers analysis,consequently the originality and distribution of the fungal *** outcome of this study includes a baseline data on the occurrence and species-diversity as well as important information on the status of microfungi in Malaysia beaches located in Kedah,Melaka and *** can be used as a checklist for future studies related to fungi distribution in the tropical beaches.

Fall is an event in which a person unintentionally descends onto the floor. It may lead to physical injuries, psychological harm and/or financial loses. Over the last three Financial Years 2009-201 l, there had been increasing fall incident rate at the unit level, Department of Internal Medicine and Haematology. The hospital fall performance target was set at 〈 one fall per 1000 patient days. Hence, there was a pressing need for improvement with an emphasis of focused analysis to prevent fall. The aim of the study was to reduce fall incidents by at least 50% at W53C and W77H in Financial Year 2012. The baseline fall incident data was collected from February 2011 to March 2012 for both wards. A total number of 33 falls with a median of 2.5 and 1.1 falls per 1000 patient days respectively were collected. The verification of root causes to fall incidences was identified in Pareto Chart. The 3 root causes were： Delayed elimination round, underestimated patients＇ risk for falls and lack of care coordination among team members. The solution implementations were： Cessation ofhardcopy of elimination chart and daily assessment of patient＇s fall risk using modified Morse Fall Scale was changed from paper to electronic. Conducting root cause analysis post fall and sharing near miss incidences were another two implementations to draw the learning points from the incidents to prevent the similar occurrence. Reallocation of staffassignment without increasing manpower to ensure better care coordination was the 5th solution. With the above stated multi-factorial interventions, a significant fall incidence rate was achieved. It had achieved 7% more than the target set for the project.

Analysis of SOI-MEMS Electrostatic Vibration Energy Harvester

This paper presents a simulation of SOI-MEMS electrostatic vibration energy harvester using the architect module in CoventorWare2010. The device has a proof mass suspended by four complaint beams anchored to a fixed frame. Performance analysis is performing by optimizing the physical parameters of the beam that directly influence the stiffness and to ensure the proof mass moves smoothly with low cross-axis sensitivity. The main goal of this study is to achieve a high specific power harvested and a low resonance frequency. The results show that the newly proposed electrostatic energy harvesting system can produce maximum output power of 5.891μW when the excitation frequency is 2 kHz. The device has been designed to be fabricated by using Deep Reactive Ion Etching process that etch the structure pattern at top layer of Silicon On Insulator wafer. The device is currently being fabricated.
