Temporal variations of mesozooplankton abundance and biomass in the mangrove creek area along the Karachi coast, Pakistan

The temporal variations of mesozooplankton abundance and biomass （1-Volumetric method by settling volume and displacement volume and 2- Gravimetric method through wet weight, dry weight and ash-free dry weight） with relation to environmental parameters were studied in the mangrove creek area of Karachi coast, Pakistan. The data of mesozooplankton samples along with environmental parameters （temperature, salinity, pH, etc.） were collected during January 1998 to December 1998 from two creek stations. The abun-dance of mesozooplankton also exhibited seasonal trends at both stations. At Sta. S2, the highest and low-est abundance values were observed during post-monsoon and southwest monsoon respectively whereas, at Sta. S1, a clear trend of high abundance in pre-monsoon to low abundance in southwest monsoon was observed. Mesozooplankton abundance was also positively correlated with settling volume, displacement volume, wet weight and dry weight. The highest biomass value was observed in the northeast monsoon and pre-monsoon periods. The results of the canonical analysis of the output from the discriminate function was tested. Out of fifteen variables, only one was significantly different in single character ratios dry weight/ash free-dry weight （F3,23=4.78,P＆lt;0.005）. The mesozooplankton community was collectively composed of 28 taxa. Among these groups, copepoda （66.3%）, gastropod larvae （9.94%）, evadne （4.60%）, zoea （3.60%）, cypris nauplii （2.56%）, lemellibranch larvae （1.87%）, chaetognaths （1.81%）, ostracods （1.73%）, lucifer （1.15%） and barnacles nauplii （1.35%） contributed the most to the similarities within Sta. S1, while copepoda （74.68%）, cypris nauplii （5.29%）, gastropods （4.87%）, barnacles nauplii （4.81%）, evadne （1.72%）, zoea （1.53%） and ca-ridean larvae （1.18%） at Sta. S2. The present research paper presents the synthesis, characterization, biological and computational studies of 4-(benzylideneamino) benzoic acid derivatives(3a~3g). Derivatives 3a~3c displayed best antidiabetic potential with a glucose-lowering effect compared to the reference drug Glibenclamide. Biochemical parameters including plasma glucose, serum triglycerides, cholesterol, alanine amino transferase and aspartate amino transferase levels showed significant alterations in concentrations relative to the control. Similarly, the derivatives 3a, 3d and 3e displayed potent in vitro antibacterial potential. Molecular docking simulations delineated that the ligands and complexes were stabilized at the active site by electrostatic and hydrophobic forces, consistent with the corresponding experimental results. In silico study of the binding pattern predicted that the synthesized ligands, 3d and 3a could serve as a potential surrogate for hit-to-lead generation and the design of novel antibacterial drugs.

Zonal distribution and population biology of llyoplaxfrater were studied in a mangrove mudflat area of Pakistan. The crabs were collected from Korangi creek through transect and quadrat method from low tide level to high tide level. Two transects were delimited in a mangrove area of Korangi creek （24°79′N/67°20′E）. On each transect, three 0.25 m quadrats were sampled at three tidal levels on a monthly basis during low tide periods from March 2001 to February 2002. A total of 1124 crabs were obtained, of which 482 were males and 642 were females. Density of crabs varied between 0 and 90/m^2. The density and size distribution varied and showed significant differences from low to high tide level, and were positively correlated with the percent moisture, percent organic matter and sediment grain size. The carapace width （CW） ranged from 2.5 to 11.5 mm for male and 2.5 to 11.0 mm for female and was not significantly different. The overall sex ratio did not differ significantly from the expected 1：1 throughout the year in small crabs but was significantly different in adult crabs （Z2 = 49.73） with more male crabs, Size frequency distribution showed recruitment of juvenile crabs （〈 4 mm） nearly throughout the year except during June and July. Presence of ovigerous females in all months with seasonal peaks in September, October, December and May indicates seasonal continuous breeding. Weight of egg mass increases with weight of ovigerous females and show positive linear relationship. The estimated mean diameter of egg was 2.83±0.25μm, and the average number of eggs was 3065±902.

This work presents a flexible/unified hardware architecture of Elliptic-curve Cryptography(ECC)and PRESENT for cryptographic *** features of the proposed work are(i)computation of only the point multiplication operation of ECC over GF(2163)for a 163-bit key generation,(ii)execution of only the variant of an 80-bit PRESENT block cipher for data encryption&decryption and(iii)execution of point multiplication operation(ECC algorithm)along with the data encryption and decryption(PRESENT algorithm).To establish an area overhead for the flexible design,dedicated hardware architectures of ECC and PRESENT are implemented in the first step,and a sum of their hardware area is ***,the implementation of the proposed flexible architecture for ECC and PRESENT algorithms is *** results regarding the area,clock cycles,latency,clock frequency,and power after the place-and-route level on Xilinx Virtex-5,Virtex-6,and Virtex-7 FPGA devices are ***,the implementation results and comparisons show that the proposed architecture suits applications demanding flexible implementation of cryptographic applications.

AIM:To investigate the similarities and dissimilarities in patients with hepatitis B and hepatitis C,clinically and metabolically. METHODS:Fifty patients with hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus infection were included in this study, along with fifty healthy controls for comparison *** blood(10 mL)samples from patients and healthy subjects were collected and made to clot before serum was separated and immediately levels of the enzymes,alkaline phosphatase(ALK),creatinine phosphokinase(CPK),lactate dehydrogenase (LDH),serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase(sGOT)and serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase(sGPT)were determined by a kit *** total con-tent of each metal the serum samples were analyzed using atomic absorption *** of cholesterol,triglycerides,urea,creatinine and uric acid were determined using a kit method on Microlab 300. RESULTS:Serum magnesium and copper levels remained unchanged,whereas the concentration of zinc decreased and iron increased significantly in both groups of *** antioxidant activity was significantly decreased in both hepatitis B and *** the enzymes analyzed,ALK,s-GPT,LDH and s-GOT were all significantly increased in both patients with hepatitis B and C whereas CPK was significantly decreased in patients with hepatitis B and remained unchanged in patients with hepatitis C. CONCLUSION:The information accumulated by this study will help provide a better understanding of involved metabolic processes in order to design appropriate therapeutic approaches for treating these patients,so they can recover and lead normal lives.

Metastatic breast cancer to anterior chamber of eye:case report and discussion

Intraocular metastases are the most common malignancies of the eye. Carcinoma of the breast is the most common malignancy to metastasize to the uvea usually posterior uvea. Anterior chamber metastasis is extremely rare. We describe a patient of breast cancer who presented with pain and impaired vision in tight eye 8.5 months after metastasis to bone and other viscera were detected and more than 10 years after her primary disease was diagnosed. Multiple yellowish white deposits were noted scattered in anterior chamber giving rise to symptoms of acute narrow angle glaucoma. Metastatic deposits of duct cell carcinoma cells were found by fine needle aspiration cytology. Patient received local external beam radiotherapy to right eye with moderate improvement in her symptoms. The rare features in this case were clinical presentation of acute glaucoma and anterior chamber as the site of metastasis.

OBJECTIVE： The use of complementary and alternative medicine（CAM） is relatively common among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus（T2DM） around the world. Like many other countries, Saudi Arabia has a high incidence of T2DM, and incorporates the use of CAM in its treatment. This study explores the knowledge, attitude and practice（KAP） of CAM therapies among patients with T2DM and explores the relationships between sociodemographics and the KAP of CAM modalities. METHODS： This is a hospital-based, observational, cross-sectional study that selected 302 outpatients with T2DM, from Diabetic Center of King Salman bin Abdul-aziz Hospital, in Riyadh city, in May 2014. Patients were interviewed using a predesigned questionnaire. RESULTS： The mean age of patients was（51.6 ± 10.6） years and 43.4% of them were males. The prevalence of CAM practices was 30.5%; 30.39% of them used herbs, 20.58% used wet cupping and 17.64% used nutritional supplements and other therapies. The factors found to predict the use of CAM therapies among patients with T2DM were： age above 51 years, unemployment and the participants’ knowledge about the effectiveness of CAM products. CONCLUSION： This preliminary study estimated the prevalence of CAM use, revealed positive attitude towards CAM and found three significant predictors of CAM use among patients with T2DM, which is consistent with regional data. A community-based research with a larger sample that targets T2DM population is needed in Saudi Arabia.

Summary：A multi-centred study was designed to collect dengue epidemiologic data from government and registered private hospitals/clinics and maintained archive of frozen specimens in bio-bank to be used for future dengue epidemic control program, and assess the epidemiology of dengue fever（DF） by evaluating biochemical and oxidative status of patients. ELISA Ig M antibodies test was done to confirm DF. From August 2010 to December 2011, 101 confirmed blood samples of DF patients referred to pathology lab of Jinnah Hospital Lahore were subjected to the epidemiologic assessment by evaluating the biochemical and physiological indices and alterations of circulating antioxidants. Clinical features of DF patients and effect of fever on blood components and serum proteins of liver were recorded. The hospital stay in DF, dengue hemorrhagic fever（DHF） and dengue shock syndrome（DSS） showed significant difference. Significant increases in serum alanine amino transferase（ALT）（P=0.000）, aspartate amino transferase（AST）（P=0.000）, alkaline phosphatase（ALP）（P=0.000）, malondialdehyde（MDA） along with significant decreases in total protein（TP）（P=0.000）, reduced glutathione（GSH）（P=0.000）, superoxide dismutase（SOD）, catalase（CAT）（P=0.000）, and sialic acid contents（P=0.016） were observed. A positive correlation existed between bound sialic acid levels, liver enzymes and circulating antioxidants（r=0.656, P=0.016）. In the present study, alterations of circulating antioxidants in DF suggest that DF might be a metabolic response to an acute, self-limiting tropical viral infection, and a consequence of the viral inflammatory process.
