Synthesis of Schiff bases of naphtha[1,2-d]thiazol-2-amine and metal complexes of 2-(2'-hydroxy)benzylideneaminonaphthothiazole as potential antimicrobial agents

Objective: A series of 2-benzylideneaminonaphthothiazoles were designed and synthesized incorporating the lipo- philic naphthalene ring to render them more capable of penetrating various biomembranes. Methods: Schiff bases were synthe- sized by the reaction of naphtha[1,2-d]thiazol-2-amine with various substituted aromatic aldehydes. 2-(2'-Hydroxy)ben- zylideneaminonaphthothiazole was converted to its Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) metal complexes upon treatment with metal salts in ethanol. All the compounds were evaluated for their antibacterial activities by paper disc diffusion method with Gram positive Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus epidermidis and Gram negative Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa bac- teria. The minimum inhibitory concentrations of all the Schiff bases and metal complexes were determined by agar streak dilution method. Results: All the compounds moderately inhibited the growth of Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. In the present study among all Schiff bases 2-(2'-hydroxy)benzylideneaminonaphthothiazole showed maximum inhibitory activity and among metal complexes Cu(II) metal complex was found to be most potent. Conclusion: The results obtained validate the hypothesis that Schiff bases having substitution with halogens, hydroxyl group and nitro group at phenyl ring are required for the antibacterial activity while methoxy group at different positions in the aromatic ring has minimal role in the inhibitory activity. The results also indicated that the metal complexes are better antibacterial agents as compared to the Schiff bases.

The response of the upper ocean to tropical cyclone Viyaru over the Bay of Bengal

Better forecast of tropical cyclone(TC) can help to reduce risk and enhance management. The TC forecast depends on the scientific understanding of oceanic processes, air-sea interaction and finally, the atmospheric process. The TC Viyaru is taken as an example, which is formed at the end of 11 May 2013 and sustains up to 17 May 2013 during pre-monsoon season. Argo data are used to investigate ocean response processes by comparing pre-and post-conditions of the TC. Eight oceanic parameters including the sea surface temperature(SST), the sea surface salinity(SSS), and the barrier layer thickness(BLT), the 26°C isotherm depth in the ocean(D26), the isothermal layer depth(ILD), the mixed layer depth(MLD), the tropical cyclone heat potential(TCHP) and the effective oceanic layer for cyclogenesis(EOLC) are chosen to evaluate the pre-and post-conditions of the TC along the track of Viyaru. The values of the SST, D26, BLT, TCHP and EOLC in the pre-cyclonic condition are higher than the post-cyclonic condition, while the SSS, ILD and MLD in the post-cyclonic condition are higher than the pre-cyclonic condition of the ocean due to strong cyclonic winds and subsurface upwelling. It is interesting that the strong intensity of the TC reduces less SST and vice versa. The satisfied real time Argo data is not available in the northern Bay of Bengal especially in the coastal region. A weather research and forecasting model is employed to hindcast the track of Viyaru, and the satellite data from the National Center Environmental Prediction are used to assess the hindcast.

OBJECTIVE:To estimate the phytochemical composition,antioxidant,antifungal,cytotoxic and phytotoxic activities of three important medicinal plants of Poonch valley,Azad Kashmir ***:Phytochemicals were investigated for both qualitative(phenols,flavonoids,alkaloids and saponins)and quantitative(total phenolic and flavonoid contents)analysis of plant extracts prepared in ethanol,ethyl acetate and ***,antioxidant potential was investigated by screening botanical extracts against 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl scavenging assay,phosphomolybdenum and total reducing power ***,disc diffusion method was used for determination of antifungal potential of all extracts against four pathogenic ***,brine shrimp cytotoxicity assay was conducted for cytotoxic potential and radish seed germination assay was carried out for estimation of allelopathic potential of plant ***:Phytochemical evaluation showed the presence of phenolics,flavonoids,alkaloids and saponins in almost all *** addition to significant antioxidant potential,Rubia cordifolia(ethanolic extract)revealed highest amount of phenolics and *** said plant also exhibited good cytotoxic *** plant extracts highest antifungal activity and allelopathic potential was recorded by Oxalis latifolia(ethyl acetate extract).Ethanol and ethyl acetate were observed to be the best choice of *** best solvents-based results were obtained by Ethanol followed by Ethyl acetate and ***:For further studies,Rubia cordifolia and Oxalis latifolia are the most promising medicinal plants of Poonch valley,Azad Kashmir Pakistan at molecular level in order to isolate the compounds concerning with pronounced activities.

This research paper provides an overview of low-temperature construction processes with an emphasis on the challenges that the sector faces and the creative solutions created to deal with them. Low-temperature construction has particular challenges with regard to technology, materials, worker safety and technological development. It highlights the necessity of customized regulations and procedures aimed at improving the sustainability and efficiency of construction in regions with low temperatures.

Chylous ascites after pancreatico-duodenectomy

BACKGROUND:Chylous ascites(CA) following pancreatico-duodenectomy(PD) is a rare complication secondary to disruption of the lymphatics during extended retroperitoneal lymph node dissection. The majority of cases do not develop CA,possibly due to patency of the proximal thoracic duct and good collaterals. CA may be due to a consequence of occult obstruction of the proximal thoracic duct by malignant infiltration or tumor embolus. This study was to report the incidence of CA and its outcomes of management. METHODS:A retrospective search of our liver database was performed using the 'pancreatico-duodenectomy','chylous ascites' from January 2000 to December 2005. The medical records of CA patients and their management and outcome were reviewed. RESULTS:In 138 patients who had undergone PD in our centre for pancreatic malignancy,3 were identified with CA and managed by abdominal paracentesis. CA resolved in 2 patients with low fat medium chain triglyceride diet alone and 1 patient had total parenteral nutrition(TPN) for persistent CA. Resolution of CA occurred in these 3 patients at a median follow-up of 4 weeks(range 4-12 weeks). Histologically,resected specimen confirmed pancreatic adenocarcinoma in all the patients. Two patients developed loco-regional recurrences at a median follow up of 8 months(range 6-10 months). And the other was currently disease free at a 10-month follow up. CONCLUSIONS:CA as an uncommon postoperative complication requires frequent paracentesis,prolonged hospital stay,and delayed adjuvant chemotherapy. CA istreated with low fat medium chain triglyceride diet or occasionally TPN is required.

Auger Depth Profiling of Carbonized SiC/Si Samples

Silicon carbide (SiC) has been prepared by passing natural gas over (100) oriented hot Si substrate at different temperatures in the range 930~1000℃. Reaction times of 60 and 90 min are *** profile, using Auger Electron Spectroscopy, shows the formation of SiC under a thin coating of carbon for the samples prepared at 930 and 950℃. Annealing, at 1050℃ for 12 h,results in a more pronounced formation of SiC. It is found that at the temperature of 1000℃and reaction times of 60 and 90 min, a hard diamond-like coating is formed.

Evaluation of clinical competence and its related factors among ICU nurses in Kermanshah-Iran: A cross-sectional study

Objectives:The present study was conducted to evaluate the clinical competence and its related demographic factors among critical care nurses in Kermanshah,***:In this cross-sectional study,155 Iranian nurses were selected by stratified random *** data collection tools included a personal information form and the"Nurse Competence Scale".Data were analyzed using descriptive and analytical ***:The mean score of nurses'clinical competence was equal to 76.14±1.59 out of 100,which was at a"very good level".The mean score of using clinical competence in practice was equal to 70.38±15.25 out of 100,which was at a"good level".Among the subscales of clinical competence,the highest mean score was related to"managing situation".The mean score of"using clinical competence in practice"was related to the subscale of"therapeutic interventions".There was no statistically significant difference among the score of clinical competence of nurses varying with different gender,age,academic degree,and work ***:The clinical competence of critical care nurses in Kermanshah was at a"very good"level,and the use of clinical competence in practice was at a"good level."Given the importance of clinical competencies in practice,nurses'clinical competence should be evaluated objectively and positive measures should be taken to promote the application of their clinical competence.

Translation and Validation of Malay Version 5-Items Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire, BIP-Q5 towards COVID-19 among Malaysian Nurses

Introduction: Currently, own individual perception is recognized as one of the important factors in the prevention of disease, including coronavirus disease, COVID-19. Given the massive impact of COVID-19 on all population’s life, including nurses as one of the main health services providers in the country, this study aims to translate and validate the Malay Version 5-Items Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire, BIP-Q5 towards COVID-19 among Malaysian nurses. Materials and Methods: Forward and backward translations and pretesting of the BIP-Q5 to Malay were conducted among nurses, subject matter experts, and language professionals. The validations process was elicited through an online cross-sectional study involving 56 nurses based on a ~10:1 subject-to-items ratio sample size estimations. Results: The principal component analysis (PCA) revealed one best component with eigenvalues more than one, confirming the questionnaire’s original version. There are five items within the single component, and all are with weightage of over 43%. The scree plot supported the findings, which showed that at least one factors are suitable to be retained. The overall Cronbach’s α coefficient was 0.7 and the intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.659. The Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin was 0.655, and Bartlett’s test of sphericity p-value was Conclusion: This study showed that the translated Malay Version 5-Items Brief Illness Perception Questionnaire, BIP-Q5 has a good psychometric property, and is a valid and reliable tool to be used to measure illness perceptions towards COVID-19 among Malaysian nurses.
