Neutron-activated biodegradable samarium-153 acetylacetonate-poly-L-lactic acid microspheres for intraarterial radioembolization of hepatic tumors

BACKGROUND Liver cancer is the 6 th most common cancer in the world and the 4 th most common death from cancer worldwide.Hepatic radioembolization is a minimally invasive treatment involving intraarterial administration of radioembolic microspheres.AIM To develop a neutron-activated,biodegradable and theranostics samarium-153 acetylacetonate(153SmAcAc)-poly-L-lactic acid(PLLA)microsphere for intraarterial radioembolization of hepatic tumors.METHODS Microspheres with different concentrations of 152SmAcAc(i.e.,100%,150%,175%and 200%w/w)were prepared by solvent evaporation method.The microspheres were then activated using a nuclear reactor in a neutron flux of 2×10^12n/cm^2/s^1,converting 152Sm to Samarium-153(153)Sm)via 152Sm(n,γ) 153Sm reaction.The SmAcAc-PLLA microspheres before and after neutron activation were characterized using scanning electron microscope,energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy,particle size analysis,Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy,thermo-gravimetric analysis and gamma spectroscopy.The in-vitro radiolabeling efficiency was also tested in both 0.9% sodium chloride solution and human blood plasma over a duration of 550 h.RESULTS The SmAcAc-PLLA microspheres with different SmAcAc contents remained spherical before and after neutron activation.The mean diameter of the microspheres was about 35μm.Specific activity achieved for 153SmAcAc-PLLA microspheres with 100%,150%,175%and 200%(w/w)SmAcAc after 3 h neutron activation were 1.7±0.05,2.5±0.05,2.7±0.07,and 2.8±0.09 GBq/g,respectively.The activity of per microspheres were determined as 48.36±1.33,74.10±1.65,97.87±2.48,and 109.83±3.71 Bq for 153SmAcAc-PLLA microspheres with 100%,150%,175%and 200%(w/w)SmAcAc.The energy dispersive X-ray and gamma spectrometry showed that no elemental and radioactive impurities present in the microspheres after neutron activation.Retention efficiency of 153Sm in the SmAcAc-PLLA microspheres was excellent(approximately 99%)in both 0.9%sodium chloride solution and human blood plasma over a duration of 550 h.CONCLUS

Link Budget Design with Performance Evaluation of Tunable Impulse-Based Ultra Wideband to Support the Integration of Wireless Sensing and Identifications Infrastructures

Recently, many studies propose the use of ultra-wideband technology for passive and active radio frequency identification systems as well as for wireless sensor networks due to its numerous advantages. By harvesting these advantages of IR-UWB technology at the physical-layer design, this paper proposes that a cross layer architecture platform can be considered as a good integrator for different wireless short-ranges indoor protocols into a universal smart wireless-tagged architecture with new promising applications in cognitive radio for future applications. Adaptive transmission algorithms have been studied to show the trade-off between different specific QoS requirements, transmission rates and distances at the physical layer level and this type of dynamic optimization and reconfiguration leads to the cross-layer design proposal in the paper. Studies from both theoretical simulation and statistical indoor environments experiments are considered as a proof of concept for the proposed architecture.

The Conservation of Ground Water Levels in the Peat Swamp Forest at Ayer Hitam North Forest Reserve, Muar in Johor, Malaysia

The management of peat swamp forests in Malaysia contends with two major issues: forest fires and the effects of abandoned forest-logging drainage systems or canals. Forest fire occurs during low rainfall season related to the local people activities. The drainage networks change the hydrological function of the intact forest ecosystem. A key function of the hydrological system in the undisturbed forest is to absorb water during rainfall season, thus delaying downstream runoff and preventing flash floods. The objective of the project described here is to restore the hydrological function of peat swamp forest (PSF) at Ayer Hitam North Forest Reserve (AHNFR) in Muar, Johor, Malaysia. The oil palm plantations, especially in the southern part of the area affect the forest reserve. Water flows out of the forest reserve through the drainage system constructed for managing these plantations. In 2016 and 2017, two water block structures or check dams were constructed near the boundaries of the forest reserve to hold the water and raise the groundwater level in the forest reserve. The implementation of the check dams at the two locations has conserved the groundwater level and subsequently, about 1.2 million m3 of water was saved annually from leaving the forest reserve from each of the check dam. This project is also part of the Coca-Cola Company’s sustainability commitment for water strategy with the global that is to replenish 100% of the equivalent volume of water consumed in their products and production by 2020. Replenishment is the key sustainability commitment for the Company.

Impulse based Ultra wideband technology has been the motivation of many recent researches with the potential of many applications to be researched. The uniqueness of the physical characteristics of the generated signal combined with the high flexibility of for different data rates at the physical layer design level have been addressed in considerable number of researches recently. This paper presents in depth reviews of the different concepts of tunable impulse based ultra wideband from the different researchers views. Research proposals of Cross layer architectures as PHY-MAC aware Impulse based ultra wideband solutions, link-budget communication design with performance evaluations in different test beds implementations are investigated in this paper. Such in-depth review can help researchers in this field to have better understanding of the different possibilities of designing new impulse-based ultra wideband solutions for future potential communication scenarios. Special focus on utilizing the advantage of impulse-based ultra wideband signal design flexibility as integrator for different short to medium wireless infrastructures mainly sharing common design constraints and requirements. Finding remarks from reviewing nearest-field literature combined with researches benchmarking to inspire researches proposal for this topic.

Impact of Indoor Residual-Sprayed Deltamethrin on Different Surfaces in a Malaria Endemic Area in Balai Ringin, Sarawak

Malaria control programme utilizing indoor residual spraying of chemical insecticide is only effective if a high coverage of targeted area is achieved. The effectiveness of the residual spraying, on the other hand, relies on the efficacy and residual activity of the insecticides applied, which to a certain extent are influenced by the nature of the sprayed surfaces. The bioefficacy of indoor residual-sprayed deltamethrin wettable granule (WG) formulation for the control of malaria was compared with the current dose of deltamethrin wettable powder (WP) in malaria endemic areas in Balai Ringin, Sarawak. Doses of 20 mg/m2 WP (control), 20 mg/m2 WG, 30 mg/m2 WG and 40 mg/m2 WG were sprayed separately on different surfaces namely, wooden, rough-bamboo, smooth-bamboo and brick surfaces. Residual activity of WP and WG formulations was tested against lab-bred Anopheles maculatus using WHO standard procedure. Deltamethrin at 30 mg/m2 WG exhibited the highest sustainable level of effectiveness against An. maculatus (An. maculatus mortality was between 95% - 100%) up to week 60 post-spraying when sprayed on smooth- bamboo surface. These results indicated that 30 mg/m2 WG could be an ideal concentration for controlling malaria vector effectively up to 15 months of which long-lasting residual spraying was envisaged. The usual two spraying cycles per year with 20 mg/m2 deltamethrin WP could be replaced with 30 mg/m2 deltamethrin WG since the long residual activity was achieved by employing a single spraying only.

Nocturnal man biting habits of mosquito species in Serian, Sarawak, Malaysia

Knowledge of the composition and biting habits of mosquito associated with endemic areas is important in establishing sound vector control programmes and understanding the epidemiology of vector borne diseases. The biting activity cycle of several mosquito species in Serian, Sarawak was observed and described. Collections were carried out indoors and outdoors for 12 hours from 6.00 pm to 6.00 am using human landing catch techniques. A total of 7271 mosquitoes comprising 27 species belonging to sixgenera were collected. Mansonia bonneae (23.6%) was the predominant species caught in the study areas followed by Culex vishnui (22.3%), Culex pseudovishnui (19.6%) and Culex tritaenorhynchus (13.7%). A high rate of human biting activity by Ma. bonneae was detected during November but the activity was low during January.The biting activity of Ma.bonneae was found higher outdoor compared to indoorand peaked at 7.00 pm-8.00 pm.Cx.vishnui also exhibited similar biting activity peak while Anopheles letiferex-hibited biting activity peaked at 12.00 am-1.00 am.Cx.pseudovishnui showed biting patterns which were almost similar between indoor and outdoor activity and could be considered active throughout the 12 hour period.
