AiM:To document the prognosis of laser treatment in patients with exudative age-related macular degeneration(AMD).· METHODS:Efficacy of the intervention was evaluated using a before-after method.· RESULTS:A total of 392 eyes of 341 patients with exudative AMD were examined.77.6% had choroideal neovascularisation(CNV).Before the use of indocyanine green(iCG) angiography,occult CNV was detected in only 1.8% of the eyes,but after the use of iCG angiography,this increased to 19.5%(Pich were followed up,visual acuity had remained stable in 68.2% of the *** was a statistically significant relationship between localisation of lesion and visual acuity changes on pre-and post-laser treatment(Pistically significant relationship between localisation of lesion and recurrence(Pin subfoveal lesions than that in juxtafoveal and extrafoveal lesions.· CONCLUSiON:iCG angiography is highly important in the treatment of occult CNV.

Background:Fever of unknown origin(FUO)in developing countries is an important dilemma and further research is needed to elucidate the infectious causes of ***:A multi-center study for infectious causes of FUO in lower middle-income countries(LMiC)and lowincome countries(LiC)was conducted between January 1,2018 and January 1,*** total,15 participating centers from seven different countries provided the data,which were collected through the infectious Diseasesinternational Research initiative *** adult patients with confirmed infection as the cause of FUO were included in the *** severity parameters were quick Sequential Organ Failure Assessment(qSOFA)≥2,intensive care unit(iCU)admission,vasopressor use,and invasive mechanical ventilation(iMV).Results:A total of 160 patients with infectious FUO were included in the ***,148(92.5%)patients had community-acquired infections and 12(7.5%)had hospital-acquired *** most common infectious syndromes were tuberculosis(TB)(n=27,16.9%),infective endocarditis(n=25,15.6%),malaria(n=21,13.1%),brucellosis(n=15,9.4%),and typhoid fever(n=9,5.6%).Plasmodium falciparum,Mycobacterium tuberculosis,Brucellae,Staphylococcus aureus,Salmonella typhi,and Rickettsiae were the leading infectious agents in this study.A total of 56(35.0%)cases had invasive procedures for *** mean qSOFA score was 0.76±0.94{median(interquartile range[iQR]):0(0–1)}.iCU admission(n=26,16.2%),vasopressor use(n=14,8.8%),and iMV(n=10,6.3%)were not ***,38(23.8%)patients had at least one of the severity *** mortality rate was 15(9.4%),and the mortality was attributable to the infection causing FUO in 12(7.5%)***:in LMiC and LiC,tuberculosis and cardiac infections were the most severe and the leading infections causing FUO.

Comparison of aerobic conjunctival bacterial flora in pregnant, reproductive-aged and postmenopausal women

AiM: To evaluate the effect of hormonal status on aerobic conjunctival flora in women. METHODS: One hundred fifty-eight women [reproductive-aged (n=55), pregnant (n=51), and postmenopausal (n=52)] who admitted to outpatient clinic of Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of Denizli State Hospital were enrolled. Age, body-mass index (BMi), obstetric history, cigarette smoking, drug usage, presence of systemic disease, and intraocular pressure (iOP) were recorded for each patient. The samples were taken from the lower fornix with two culture swabs and directly incubated in culture containing 5% sheep blood, eosin-methylene blue and chocolate agar. The other swab specimen was Gram stained. All growths and microscopic results were analyzed. RESULTS: The coagulase-negative Staphylococcus was the predominant organism isolated in the conjunctival samples in both three groups. The aerobic microorganism growth rate for all isolated aerobic organisms revealed no significant change in the three groups (P>0.05). The conjunctival culture positivity rates were similar in the three groups (49% in reproductive-aged, 57% in pregnant and 58% in postmenopausal women) (P>0.05). Age, iOP, BMi, gravidity, parity, cigarette smoking, drug usage, and presence of systemic diseases did not have an effect on culture positivity in three groups. CONCLUSiON: Results of this study showed that conjunctival aerobic flora and bacterial colonization did not differ between reproductive-aged, pregnant and postmenopausal women.

Objective:To assess the effectiveness of high-dose corticosteroid pulse therapy and evaluate possible factors associated with 28-day mortality in hospitalised patients with severe COViD-19 ***:We conducted a single-centre retrospective cohort study on hospitalised patients with clinical,epidemiological,and/or radiologically confirmed and suspected COViD-19 at Bitlis Tatvan State Hospital in Turkey between December 1,2020 and June 1,*** data of the study participants were recorded,and all patients received intravenous high-dose corticosteroid pulse *** Ordinal Scale for Clinical improvement(OSCi),Charlson Comorbidity index and Total Severity Score were *** and multivariate Cox regression models were performed to evaluate the clinical and laboratory parameters that may affect the 28-day ***:A total of 126 patients were included in the *** 28-day mortality rate of the patients was 22.2%.Laboratory and clinical improvement were observed in 77.8%(98/126)of patients after high-dose corticosteroid pulse *** was a statistically significant difference between the survivors and non-survivors in terms of age,platelet count,neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio,and OSCi,Charlson Comorbidity index,and Total Severity Score(Pivariate Cox regression analysis revealed that age[HR 1.047(95%Ci 1.01-1.08)],use of prophylactic anticoagulation[HR 0.838(95%Ci 0.79-0.89)],and bacterial co-infection[HR 3.966(95%Ci 1.40-11.21)]were significant determinants of *** C-reactive protein(CRP)response,decreased oxygen requirement,and improving respiratory rate/OSCi scores after administration of high-dose corticosteroid pulse therapy could contribute to clinical ***:CRP response,needed oxygen and OSCi scores can be used as prognostic factors to select patients who will benefit from high-dose corticosteroid pulse therapy.

Objective:To investigate granulomatous inflammation etiology based on clinical history and ancillary ***:Children agedith biopsy proven granulomatous lesions in any tissue specimens between January 2014 and January 2022 were included in the *** diagnosis was based on the results of immunohistochemical staining,molecular tests,culture,serology,radiological and other auxiliary laboratory *** were categorized into infectious and noninfectious ***:in total,174 patients with granulomatosis inflammation confirmed by histopathology were *** 59.2%patients were males,and the median age was 4.48(iQR 2.36-6.39)years(range:16 months-18 years).The tissues/organs that were most commonly biopsied were lymph node,bone,skin,and lung(51.1%,17.8%,9.2%,and 5.7%,respectively).infectious and non-infectious causes were identified in 73.0%and 12.6%patients,respectively,in terms of granulomatosis inflammation etiology;however,no cause was identified in 14.4%*** most common infectious cause was tuberculosis(in 51.7%patients),followed by toxoplasmosis,aspergillosis,mucormycosis,leishmaniasis,and cat-scratch disease(in 8.6%,5.7%,1.7%,1.7%,and 1.1%patients,respectively).The common non-infectious cause was chronic granulomatous *** evaluation revealed granulomatosis inflammation in 33.3%patients,necrotizing granulomatosis inflammation in 30.5%patients,and caseating granulomatosis inflammation in 12.1%*** the pathology results of patients with and without tuberculosis were compared,the incidence of caseating granulomatosis inflammation(P=0.003)and necrotizing granulomatosis inflammation(P=0.005)was higher in patients with ***:Chronic granulomatous disease is the most common non-infectious cause in ***,primary or secondary immune deficiencies may cause granulomatosis inflammation,especially in pediatric patients.

Objective:To investigate Blastocystis’etiologic role and association with gastrointestinal symptomatology in acute and chronic urticaria patients and to identify Blastocystis subtypes responsible for ***:The study included urticaria patients and healthy individuals that presented to our polyclinic between June 2015 and May *** participants were assigned into Group栺(137 patients),subdivided into acute(72)and chronic urticaria patients(65),and Group栻(129 control individuals).Blastocystis presence was investigated by native-Lugol examination,trichrome staining,PCR using sequence tagged site primers,and DNA sequencing *** phylogenetic tree was ***:The native-Lugol and trichrome staining methods revealed that 16 patients(16/133,12.0%)had Blastocystis-positive stool samples,of which seven samples(7/133,5.3%)belonged acute and nine(9/133,6.8%)to chronic urticaria *** Blastocystis subtypes,of the acute urticaria patients,three had subtype 1(ST1),one had ST2,and three had *** the chronic urticaria patients,one had ST1 and eight had *** positivity was detected in two control individuals(2/123,1.6%),both being *** subtypes identified by PCR were confirmed by the sequencing *** acute and chronic urticaria groups showed no statistically significant differences for Blastocystis positivity(P=0.60)and subtype distribution(P=0.15).A statistically significant difference was found between the urticaria patients and the controls for Blastocystis positivity(Pistribution(P=0.67)or for Blastocystis presence and gastrointestinal ***:This study on Blastocystis subtype distribution among Turkish urticaria patients showed results consistent with the *** was concluded that Blastocystis should be kept in mind in patients with urticaria.
