We explore the parameters that influence the dynamics of water erosion. The method used is an experimental laboratory simulation, which consists of the quantitative evaluation of eroded masses as a function of slope, soil cohesion and rainfall intensity. A simulator was designed to have the ability to vary the slope of the terrain, as well as the rainfall intensity. The variation of the soil cohesion is obtained by compacting the soil under different pressures using a hydraulic press associated with the whole experimental device. The results obtained show that the device is a good tool to simulate in the laboratory the behavior of different soil under the action of rain;because these results are in agreement with existing models USLE, MUSLE and RUSLE [1] [2] [3] [4].

Most water bodies worldwide are infested with algae bloom and Lake Taihu is no exception, various techniques have been developed to harvest microalgae from Lake Taihu as part of the lake cleaning program and this results in a large algae biomass to deal with. This study made use of the algae biomass harvested as a biocolorants source for textile application and also evaluated its dyeing characteristics with mercerized and bleached cotton. The fabrics were dyed with either ultrasound or water bath method. The ultrasound method improved dye extraction yield from 17.8% for the conventional method to 26.7%, which was also enhanced to 33.2% with the addition of HCl (1 cm). The ultrasound dyeing method was effective at improving dye uptake at a reduced dyeing temperature when compared to the conventional method and also produced different shades of color after dyeing with different mordants. The dyed fabrics had good fastness properties for laundry, crocking and light. The dyed fabrics also showed a good ultraviolet protection factor. The use of algae biomass as a potential source of colorants for textile application will provide an alternate dye source that is environmentally friendly.

Evaluation of Laboratory Performance with Quality Indicators in Infectious Disease Hospital, Kano, Nigeria

Background: In January 2010, the implementation of quality management systems toward WHO-AFRO laboratory accreditation commenced in the Antiretroviral Treatment Laboratory of the Infectious Disease Hospital, Kano, Nigeria. Quality improvement projects were instituted in 2011 in line with ISO 15189 requirements for accreditation of medical laboratory. In this study we evaluated the performance of the laboratory through some set of quality indicators (QI). Methodology: This was a retrospective study to evaluate laboratory QIs monitored from January 2011 to December 2013. The QIs were specimen rejection rate (SSR), turnaround time (TAT), proficiency testing performance (PTP) and client satisfaction survey (CSS). Data was collected into an excel file for analysis and percentage performance compared among years. SSR & TAT were evaluated with the Sigma scale. Results: A total of 7920 (2194 in 2011, 2715 in 2012, 3011 in 2013) specimens were received for testing. 22 (0.28%) specimens were rejected and 81 (1.02%) specimens’ results were reported after the acceptable TAT, giving a Sigma level of 4.27 and 3.82 for SSR and TAT respectively. There was steady improvement in PTP: CD4+ from 67% in 2011 to 90% in 2013, hematology from 81% in 2012 to 83% in 2013, blood film reading 79% in 2011 to 83% in 2013 and chemistry from 90% in 2011 to 93% in 2013. HIV serology recorded 100% throughout. CSS increased from 59% in 2012 to 78% in 2013. However, there was no statistically significance difference reported for PTP and CSS over the years (P > 0.05). Conclusion: The study highlights the need to continuously evaluate QIs and calls for more effort to improve on PTP and focuses on understanding and improving on clients concerns.

Assessment of Active Case Search of COVID-19 in Healthcare Facilities during the Third Wave of the Pandemic in Ekiti State, Nigeria

Early case detection and isolation of patients infected with highly infectious diseases through active case search (ACS) are important for early commencement of treatment and control of the disease within a population. This study aimed to assess the ACS of COVID-19 in healthcare facilities during the third wave of the pandemic in Ekiti State, Nigeria. This cross-sectional study was conducted in all healthcare facilities in Ekiti State. All cadres of local government primary healthcare workers were trained to carry out the ACS using semi-structured interviewer-administered questionnaire uploaded on android phone software open data kit (ODK). ACS was conducted between June and September (epidemiological week 23 to 36), 2021 and the collected data were analyzed using IBM SPSS version 23.0. P-value < 0.05 was taken as significant. The number of ACS visits for COVID-19 increases with epidemiological week progression, but the highest was in week 32 (9.9%). Cases of suspected COVID-19 in the healthcare facilities in the last one week were reported in more than half (58%) of the visits and 57.8% of those reported, documented between 1 - 4 cases. Also, out of those that were reported, 42% of them missed (not line listed) at least one suspected case of COVID-19. The private health facilities missed more cases of COVID-19 (54.3%) than other categories of health facilities (p < 0.001). The health educators and local government immunization officers (LIO) than other cadre of healthcare workers found most missed cases (57.1% and 51.4% respectively) in their visits (p < 0.001). The health educator as well as the LIO detected the highest proportion of missed suspected cases which shows that disease surveillance officers alone may not be adequate for ACS, there is a need to involve other local government team member.

It’s for the Greater Good: Perspectives on Maltreatment during Labor and Delivery in Rural Ghana

Aim: Encouraging women to deliver in facility settings is one strategy to improve maternal and neonatal outcomes in the developing world. However, in much of sub-Saharan Africa, fewer than half of pregnant women deliver in health facilities. Fear of maltreatment during labor and delivery has been shown to be one barrier to facility delivery, yet previous studies have focused solely on reports from women, rarely seeking insights from practicing midwives. Method: All seven practicing midwives from a rural hospital in Ghana and ten pregnant women seeking antenatal care from the same hospital were recruited to participate in in-depth interviews regarding their perceptions of care during labor and delivery. A semi-structured interview tool and qualitative field interviewing approach were utilized. All interviews were audio taped, transcribed, and analyzed using NVivo 9.0. Results: Respondents described situations that precipitate abuse during facility deliveries, yet not all abuse was seen as acceptable. Two overarching themes emerged: 1) The interaction between midwives and their patients is analogous to a mother/daughter relationship, including both a knowledge imbalance and the need for disciplinary action when necessary;and 2) Midwives feel a strong sense of responsibility for the delivery outcomes and as a result, they will do whatever it takes to deliver a live baby to a healthy mother. Hitting, yelling, and neglecting women were reported as common occurrences in the labor and delivery ward. However, each was undertaken to encourage women to do what was needed to deliver safely. Conclusion: These findings suggest that the issue of patient maltreatment in low-resource labor and delivery settings is complex and may be undertaken in what is perceived to be the laboring woman’s best interest. The mechanisms by which oligotrophic and eutrophic lakes rid itself of Escherichia coli or faecal coliforms are still not clearly understood. This study sought to review the various means by which E. coli or faecal coliforms are inactivated or removed in lakes. The review cited temperature, solar radiation, predation, starvation, attachment and sedimentation as key factors that aid the removal of E. coli in lakes. In eutrophic lakes additional factors such as the role of algal biomass may play a role due to increased pH and dissolved oxygen levels attributed to algal presence. Algal toxins or exudates may also play a role although this is still under debate. The interactive effect of two or more of these factors on E. coli inactivation and the relative importance of these mechanisms on E. coli removal are still not known. Areas for further research include the role of algae in sedimenting E. coli or faecal coliforms and the possible role of algal exudates on E. coli inactivation.

我们利用标准化调查和广泛调查两种方法对尼日利亚西南部森林中黑猩猩(Pan troglodytes)的分布状态进行了调查。本研究确认该地区总计2 443·58 km2的15个森林保护区内存在该物种。然而基于间接证据,该地区之前仅有8个森林保护区共计1 920·48 km2被调查过。我们将独立收集的年度数据根据不同保护区进行分类总结并且估计了建巢黑猩猩的个体密度。研究结果显示该地区的黑猩猩呈低密度高分散分布,其中只有Eba和Ise两个森林保护区中黑猩猩的分布密度显著大于0·20/km2。研究区域内四个森林保护区中黑猩猩的建巢数大于10 (Akure/Ofosu森林保护区,13个; Oluwa森林保护区, 11个;Ise森林保护区22个; Ago-Owu森林保护区,11个)。此外,在Ise森林保护区内我们观察到黑猩猩其它活动(例如观望行为,发声行为,取食迹象和粪便)的频次显著高于其它森林保护区。研究结果表明,残余且易于管理的黑猩猩种群分布于该调查区域。

Moisture diffusion during soaking of palm kernel shell (Elaeis guineensis) aggregate concerning DURA variety of Cameroon was studied. Parameters like percentage of water gain at the saturation point and the effective moisture diffusivity were the main purposes. The knowledge of the behavior of those shells in presence of the liquid during the realization of the composite materials is important. Gravimetric method with discontinuous control of the mass of sample after immersion at the ambient temperature was used. Palm kernel shell aggregate of two origins and two considerable sizes respectively in mm: Sizes ≥ 16 and 12.5 ≤ Sizes -8 and 7.90 × 10-9 m2/s] was also determined according to their irregular shapes by fitted soaking data in Becker’s model.

Parasitic plants are challenging to agricultural crops and forestry development,which are sources of major revenues in several countries,including ***,parasitic plants are important to human society as they have an abundance of bioactive compounds with pharmacological ***,it becomes expedient to know the benefits of these plants and potential means of *** review discusses four selected parasitic plants in Nigeria,namely Viscum album,Striga hermonthica,Tapinanthus bangwensis and Cuscuta *** information about their pharmacological relevance and biocontrol was obtained from credible databases,including the National Library of Medicine,SCOPUS,and Google *** review showed that all four plants have been extensively studied for their antioxidant and antitumor ***,antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities are common pharmacological values among parasitic *** are largely due to the presence of abundant beneficial classes of ***,there is an increasing number of biocontrol studies on the use of microorganisms,such as Phaeobotryosphaeria visci,Sphaeropsis visci,Pandoraea pulminicol,Colletotrichum gloeosporioides,and Fusarium oxysporum in controlling and managing these seemingly disastrous *** is hoped that this review will spur further studies into the conservation and proper management of parasitic plants using strategically developed biocontrol.
