Characteristics of Obstetric Fistula in Kaduna Metropolis

Introduction: Obstetric fistula is prevalent in sub-Saharan Africa. In Nigeria, it is more prevalent in the North compared to the South;and mainly rural. Urbanization has had significant impact on global health. Rapid urbanization is predicted to intensify in developing countries where fistula is endemic, but the pattern of presentation of obstetric fistula in urban areas is yet to be described. Objective: The objective of the study was to find out if obstetric fistula exists in Kaduna metropolis, and if it does, to explore the pattern of presentation. Methodology: Women living with obstetric fistula were mobilized from Kaduna metropolis for free screening and repair. They were screened using direct dye and three swab tests. Consenting patients with confirmed obstetric fistula were included in the study. Their socio-demographic and clinical data were captured using Microsoft Access and analyzed with Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 17. Results: All twenty three consenting women confirmed to have obstetric fistula lived within Kaduna city and had phone contacts. A depreciating proportion of primiparous women presented with obstetric fistula in Kaduna metropolis as multiparous women were in majority. The women also appeared to have higher height and weight measures and majority of them had access to fistula repair. They married early and were mostly uneducated and illiterate. Conclusion: Obstetric fistula afflicts women living in Kaduna metropolis. Women living with fistula in Kaduna metropolis appear to present different socio-demographic features, suggesting an emerging trend related to urbanization.

Evaluation of phytochemical properties and in-vitro antibacterial activity of the aqueous extracts of leaf,seed and root of Abrus precatorius Linn. against Salmonella and Shigella

Objective:To investigate the phytochemical components of Abrus precatorius(***) and the in-vitro susceptibility of Salmonella typhi and Shigella dysenteriae to the aqueous extracts of *** leaf,seed and ***:The leaf,seed and root of *** were collected and homogenized separately after drying at 40℃ for seven days in hot-air *** aqueous extracts of each of the parts were prepared and subjected to phytochemical *** of 400,300,200,100 mg/mL,of each of the extracts were used for broth dilution in minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC) determination against clinical isolates of Salmonella typhi and Shigella dysenteriae,while 50,40,30,20,and 10 mg/mL dilutions were used for the agar diffusion test and 100 mg/mL and 10 mg/mL of gentamycin were used as controls for broth dilution in MIC determination and agar diffusion test,***:Qualitative study reveals that tannin,saponins,alkaloids,flavonoids,terpenoids,steroids and phenols were present in all of the plant *** leaf has the highest quantities of tannin and *** root generally showed the lowest quantity of all the *** pathogens were susceptible to aqueous extracts of the leaf,stem and root of *** at 50 mg/*** concentrations of 40,30 and 20 mg/mL,all the aqueous extracts of *** showed variation in MIC,but produced no minimum bactericide effect upon *** were variations in diameter of zone of inhibition against the organisms at lower ***:These findings suggest that *** is a valuable source of phytochemicals with promising antibacterial *** this bioactivity,*** could be probed further for toxicity,and to obtain some novel antibacterial molecules.

Prediction of Facial Height, Width, and Ratio from Thumbprints Ridge Count and its Possible Applications

The fingerprints and face recognition are two biometric processes that comprise methods for uniquely recognizing humans based on certain number of intrinsic physical or behavioral *** objectives of the study were to predict the facial height(FH),facial width,and ratios from thumbprints ridge count and its possible *** was a cross-sectional study.A total of 457 participants were recruited.A fingerprint live scanner was used to capture the plain *** facial photograph was captured using a digital ***’s correlation analysis was used for the relationship between thumbprint ridge density and facial linear ***‑wise linear multiple regression analysis was used to predict facial distances from thumbprint ridge *** result showed that in males the right ulnar ridge count correlates negatively with lower facial width(LFW),upper facial width/upper FH(UFW/UFH),lower FH/FH(LFH/FH),and positively with UFH and UFW/*** right and left proximal ridge counts correlate with LFW and UFH,*** males,the right ulnar ridge count predicts LFW,UFW/LFW,UFW/UFH,and LFH/*** upper face height I,LFW,height of lower third of the face,UFW/LFW was predicted by right radial ridge ***,height of lower third of the face,and LFH/FH were predicted from left ulnar ridge count whereas left proximal ridge count predicted *** females only,the special upper face height I was predicted by right ulnar ridge *** conclusion,thumbprint ridge counts can be used to predict FH,width,ratios among Hausa *** possible application of fingerprints in facial characterization for used in human biology,paleodemography,and forensic science was demonstrated.

Evaluation of <i>Piper guineense</i>in the Control of Cowpea Storage Weevils: Implication for Sustainable Credit Advancement

The Central Bank of Nigeria Anchored Borrowers Programme efforts geared towards massive production of cowpea and sustainable food security is challenged with post-harvest losses especially due to insect pest infestation in storage. So also, chemical method of pest control posed more health and ecological challenges than food insecurity. This work investigated the effect of Piper guineense on cowpea storage weevil at the agronomy laboratory of the Lagos State Polytechnic, Ikorodu. Contact toxicity of P. guineense at 0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8 and 1 g per 20 g of cowpea seeds in test tubes including a control was observed. The treatment materials exhibited significant efficacy from 24 hours after infestation. P. guineense at 1 g concentration significantly reduced the oviposition potential, egg hatching rate, holes and emergence of adult Callosobruchus maculatus on treated seeds. The powders caused chronic toxicity and inhibit development. All the responses were found to be concentration dependent. Increasing rates of P. guineense increased performance. The implication of these results is discussed and recommendations proffered.

Techno-Economic Evaluation of Thermal and Catalytic Pyrolysis Plants for the Conversion of Heterogeneous Waste Plastics to Liquid Fuels in Nigeria

Techno-economic potentials of thermal and catalytic pyrolysis plants for the conversion of waste plastics to liquid fuels have been widely studied, but it is not obvious which of the two plants is more profitable, as the existing studies used different assumptions and cost bases in their analyses, thereby making it difficult to compare the economic potentials of the two plants. In this study, industrial-scale thermal and catalytic waste plastics pyrolysis plants were designed and economically analyzed using ASPEN PLUS. Amorphous silica-alumina was considered the optimum catalyst, with 3:1 feed to catalyst ratio. Based on 20,000 tons/year of feed and 20% interest rate, the catalytic plant, having a net present value (NPV) of � million, was found to be economically less attractive than the thermal plant, having the NPV of �.4 million. On the contrary, sensitivity analyses of the two plants at a feed rate of 50,000 tons/year gave rise to a slightly higher NPV for the catalytic plant (� million) than the thermal plant having NPV of � million, thereby making the former more economically attractive for processing large amounts of waste plastics into liquid fuels. Consequently, as the catalytic plant showed a better scale economy and would produce higher quality liquid fuels than the thermal plant, it is recommended for commercialization in Nigeria.

Artificial Neural Network Model for Friction Factor Prediction

Friction factor estimation is essential in fluid flow in pipes calculations. The Colebrook equation, which is a referential standard for its estimation, is implicit in friction factor, f. This implies that f can only be obtained via iterative solution. Sequel to this, explicit approximations of the Colebrook equation developed using analytical approaches have been proposed. A shift in paradigm is the application of artificial intelligence in the area of fluid flow. The use of artificial neural network, an artificial intelligence technique for prediction of friction factor was investigated in this study. The network having a 2-30-30-1 topology was trained using the Levenberg-Marquardt back propagation algorithm. The inputs to the network consisted of 60,000 dataset of Reynolds number and relative roughness which were transformed to logarithmic scales. The performance evaluation of the model gives rise to a mean square error value of 2.456 × 10–15 and a relative error of not more than 0.004%. The error indices are less than those of previously developed neural network models and a vast majority of the non neural networks are based on explicit analytical approximations of the Colebrook equation.

Analyses of clay minerals within the Early Cretaceous Weald Basin,Southeast England reveal kaolinite,illite and chlorite as the main detrital clay minerals while glauconite and smectite are subordinates.A kaolinite-rich assemblage which characterized the sand-dominated Ashdown and Tunbridge Wells Sand formations and an illite-dominated assemblage associated mostly with the Wadhurst Clay and Weald Clay formations are *** was enriched in the Ashdown and Tunbridge Wells Sand formations during warm and humid climate with high precipitation that encouraged chemical weathering and leaching,while cold and dry conditions favoured the concentration of illite in the Wadhurst Clay and Weald Clay *** patterns associated with warm climate were drastically reduced during the drier climatic *** clay minerals are detrital in origin,with chlorite being more prominent than previously *** to previous studies and assumptions,this study revealed that authigenic clay minerals are present in the Hastings Beds,with vermiform and mica-replacive kaolinite being the most common,consistent with humid depositional *** authigenic illite is also present,along with a chloritized grain,providing evidence for *** absence of dickite and occurrence of kaolinite,suggest that authigenic illite formed in relatively shallow burial conditions,indicating a maximum burial depth of2500 m-3000 m,about 1000 m deeper than previous estimates of 1500 m-2000 *** clay minerals are absent in the Weald Clay Formation possibly because of hindered flow of meteoric water and limited growth space for authigenic *** study is significant in:1)reinforcing multiple methods to facilitate a robust and balanced knowledge of formation and transformation of clay minerals;2)investigating detrital and authigenic clay mineral assemblages when assessing the palaeoenvironments of sedimentary basins.

Profitability Analysis of Selected Steam Methane Reforming Methods for Hydrogen Production

One of the matured methods for producing hydrogen in bulk is steam methane reforming (SMR). The two commercial aspects of producing hydrogen from SMR are SMR with shift reactor (SR) and SMR with dry methane reforming (DRM). Although SMR with SR produces high hydrogen yield, it emits a large quantity of carbon dioxide (CO2). On the contrary, SMR and DRM produce low hydrogen yield but favorably emit a low quantity of CO2. However, it is not obvious which of these methods is more favourable economically. Consequently, using UNISIM Software Package, this study investigates three SMR methods namely SMR with SR, SMR with DRM and SMR with the combination of DRM and SR for the purpose of determining the most favourable route for producing hydrogen. This was done on the basis of feedstock rate of 100 kmol/hr of methane which reacted with 250 kmol/hr of steam for 8000 hrs annually using the rate of CO2 and CO emissions (COx) and the plant net profit percentage as performance indices. The profitability analysis shows that SMR/SR process is the most profitable process with a net profit percentage of 41.3%. Moreover, SMR/SR process has the highest yield and interestingly lowest COx emission rate. It is therefore concluded that the most favourable process route, technically and economically, is SMR/SR for the production of hydrogen using methane as feedstock.

A Study of Implementation of Preventive Maintenance Programme in Nigeria Power Industry – Egbin Thermal Power Plant, Case Study

Preventive Maintenance Programme consists of actions that improve the condition of system elements for performance optimization and aversion of unintended system failure or collapse. It involves inspection, servicing, repairing or replacing physical components of machineries, plant and equipment by following the prescribed schedule. It is commonly agreed nowadays that preventive maintenance programme can be very successful in improving equipment reliability while minimizing maintenance related costs. The availability of a complex system, such as steam turbine power plant is strongly associated with its parts reliability and maintenance policy. That policy not only has influence on the parts’ repair time but also on the parts’ reliability affecting the system integrity, degradation and availability. The objective of this paper is to study the effects of Preventive Maintenance Programme (PMP) implementation on the performance of the Egbin 1320 MW thermal power plant in Nigeria. This paper considers the reliability and availability of the 6 x 220 MW steam turbine units installed in the power station. The reliability and availability of the turbines are computed based on a five-year failure database. The availability analysis of available data from 2005 to 2009 shows different results for each unit and variation in availability for different year: availability of unit1 varies between 59.11 to 91.76%;unit 2, 64.02 to 94.53%;unit 3, 28.79 to 91.57%;unit 4, 80.31 to 92.76% and unit 5, 73.38 to 87.76%. Unit 6 was out of service for the past 2 to 3 years. This indicates differences in their systems installation maintenance and operation.
