Background:The development and spread of artemisinin-resistant Plasmodium falciparum malaria in Greater Mekong Subregion has created impetus for continuing global monitoring of efficacy of artemisinin-based combination therapies(ACTs). This post analyses is aimed to evaluate changes in early treatment response markers 10 years after the adoption of ACTs as first-line treatments of uncomplicated falciparum malaria in ***: At 14 sentinel sites in six geographical areas of Nigeria, we evaluated treatment responses in 1341 children under 5 years and in additional 360 children under 16 years with uncomplicated malaria enrolled in randomized trials of artemether-lumefantrine versus artesunate-amodiaquine at 5-year interval in 2009-2010 and 2014-2015 and at 2-year interval in 2009-2010 and 2012-2015, respectively after deployment in ***: Asexual parasite positivity 1 day after treatment initiation (APPD1) rose from 54 to 62% and 2 days after treatment initiation from 5 to 26% in 2009-2010 to 2014-2015(P=0.002 and P 75 000 μl^-1, haematocrit > 27% 1 day post-treatment initiatiortreatment with artemether-lumefantrine and enrolment in 2014-2015 independently predicted APPD1. In paralle , Kaplan-Meier estimated risk of recurrent infections by day 28 rose from 8 to 14% (P=0005) and from 9 to 15%(P=0.02) with artemether-lumefantrine and artesunate-amodiaquine, respectively. Background: Climate-induced challenge remains a growing concern in the dry tropics, threatening carbon sink potential of tropical dry forests. Hence, understanding their responses to the changing climate is of high priority to facilitate sustainable management of the remnant dry forests. In this study, we examined the long-term climate-growth relations of main tree species in the remnant dry Afromontane forests in northern Ethiopia. The aim of this study was to assess the dendrochronological potential of selected dry Afromontane tree species and to study the influence of climatic variables (temperature and rainfall) on radial growth. It was hypothesized that there are potential tree species with discernible annual growth rings owing to the uni-modality of rainfall in the region. Ring width measurements were based on increment core samples and stem discs collected from a total of 106 trees belonging to three tree species (Juniperus procera, Olea europaea p. cuspidate and Podocarpus falcatus). Thesubsp. collected samples were prepared, crossdated, and analyzed using standard dendrochronological methods. The formation of annual growth rings of the study species was verified based on successful crossdatability and by correlating tree-ring widths with rainfall. Results: The results showed that all the sampled tree species form distinct growth boundaries though differences in the distinctiveness were observed among the species. Positive and significant correlations were found between the tree-ring widths and rainfall, implying that rainfall plays a vital role in determining tree growth in the region. The study confirmed the formation of annual growth rings through successful crossdating, thus highlighted the potential applicability of dendroclimatic studies in the region. Wavelet Transform for Image Compression Using Multi-Resolution Analytics: Application to Wireless Sensors Data

The aggregation of data in recent years has been expanding at an exponential rate. There are various data generating sources that are responsible for such a tremendous data growth rate. Some of the data origins include data from the various social media, footages from video cameras, wireless and wired sensor network measurements, data from the stock markets and other financial transaction data, supermarket transaction data and so on. The aforementioned data may be high dimensional and big in Volume, Value, Velocity, Variety, and Veracity. Hence one of the crucial challenges is the storage, processing and extraction of relevant information from the data. In the special case of image data, the technique of image compressions may be employed in reducing the dimension and volume of the data to ensure it is convenient for processing and analysis. In this work, we examine a proof-of-concept multiresolution analytics that uses wavelet transforms, that is one popular mathematical and analytical framework employed in signal processing and representations, and we study its applications to the area of compressing image data in wireless sensor networks. The proposed approach consists of the applications of wavelet transforms, threshold detections, quantization data encoding and ultimately apply the inverse transforms. The work specifically focuses on multi-resolution analysis with wavelet transforms by comparing 3 wavelets at the 5 decomposition levels. Simulation results are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the methodology.

Performance and Blood Profile of Grower West African Dwarf (WAD) Bucks Fed Graded Levels of Toasted Baobab (<i>Adansonia digitata</i>) Seed Meal

An experiment was conducted to evaluate the performance and blood parameters of West African Dwarf (WAD) bucks fed graded levels of toasted baobab seed meal for 84 days. Baobab seeds were washed, sun-dried and toasted uniformly using a cast iron pan. The toasted baobab seeds were crushed with a roller mill grinding machine to make baobab seed meal (BSM). The BSM was included at 0%, 25%, 50% and 75% levels in diets 1, 2, 3 and 4 respectively to replace soybean. Each treatment was replicated four times in a completely randomized design. Uncoagulated blood samples were collected from WAD bucks at the end of the 84 days’ feeding trial and analysed for packed cell volume (PCV), haemoglobin concentrate (Hb), red blood cells (RBC) and white blood cells (WBC). The mean corpuscular haemoglobin volume (MCV), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (MCH), platelets, neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, eosinophils, and basophils were calculated using PCV, RBC and Hb. The blood meant for serological analysis was centrifuged at 1000 G for 10 minutes, after which the serum was separated and used for determining serum total protein (Tp), albumin, serum glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (SGOT) and serum glutamic pyruvic transaminase (SGPT).

Operations of Knapsack Sprayer and Its Impacts on Physiological Parameters of Selected Operators

The study was aimed at determining the impacts of operating Manually Operated Hand Lever Knapsack Sprayers (MOHLKS) on physiological responses of the operators as dependent on anthropometric variations and sex. Twenty eight subjects, (4 female, 24 male) Mean ± SD: Age 22.5 ± 1.92, 24.29 ± 2.2 years;Body Mass Index 24.6 ± 4.8, 21.7 ± 2.4 kg/m2 were employed in the study. Selected anthropometric parameters of weight and height were used to determine body mass index (BMI), with these are arm-reach forward, elbow to fingertip, hand length and hand width were measured to establish human variations in diversity. Subjects undertook the operation at 5 replicates each, before and after which information about operators’ body pain locations and body physiological changes of heart rates were obtained. Measured parameters were used in the determination of expended energy (EE), physiological cost (PC), oxygen intake (VO2) and aerobic power (VO2max). Alongside with these were operational parameters of stroke, pace and time taken to get the operation done and environmental factors of temperature and relative humidity. The results revealed on the average that the BMI (24.61 ± 4.78 kg/m2) in female operators was higher, this corresponded to PC and VO2, while the VO2max (34.83 ± 3.30 ml/min/kg) in males is higher. More EE was obtained in female subjects (3.53 ± 3.76 kCal/min) as compared to male subjects (3.42 ± 7.48 kCal/min). The main effects plot of operational factors on EE displayed the stroke made by the subjects during spraying operation as parameter with largest effect on EE. Regression equation for EE and PCI is given as PCI = 1.97 + 25.2 EE, while the P-value at α = 0.05 is 0.000 and R2 = 98.8%. Maintenance in Marginal Oilfield Production Facilities: A Review

Natural decline in various mainstream oilfield reserves and the high investment capital in upstream exploration and project development have promoted attention towards smaller oilfields referred to as Marginal fields. This provides operators the opportunity to commence exploration and production with minimum requirements of design, installation, and operations. Although the low Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) requirement favors the start-up of marginal oilfield operations, several operators are not able to sustain the field’s operations due to the high Operational Expenditure (OPEX), particularly arising from facilities’ maintenance. The aim of this paper is to review the maintenance strategies adopted in marginal oilfields, assess their effectiveness, and provide a pointer towards efficient and viable maintenance strategies for the sustainability of marginal oilfields. The study showed that time-based preventive maintenance is predominant in the oil industry, which constitutes up to 40% of net operational expenses. In other cases, reactive maintenance is adopted, which often results in an unplanned shutdown, known to be responsible for nearly half of the overall losses of an oil facility. A paradigm shift in maintenance to Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) was explored for marginal oilfield, with a comprehensive review of various maintenance strategies, ranging from maintenance optimization strategies, Heuristics and Metaheuristics, Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Data Mining techniques. It was observed that the application of AI best addresses the proposed RCM for marginal oilfields. This was drawn from the recorded limitations of the other concepts from verifiable similar works, where different AI techniques and Data analytics methods have been successfully applied to aid RCM.

Development of Maintenance Management Strategy Based on Reliability Centered Maintenance for Marginal Oilfield Production Facilities

The present work adopted Reliability Centered Maintenance (RCM) methodology to evaluate marginal oilfield Early Production Facility (EPF) system to properly understand its functional failures and to develop an efficient maintenance strategy for the system. The outcome of the RCM conducted for a typical EPF within the Niger Delta zone of Nigeria provides an indication of equipment whose failure can significantly affect operations at the production facility. These include the steam generation unit and the wellhead choke assembly, using a risk-based failure Criticality Analysis. Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) was conducted for the identified critical equipment on a component basis. Each component of the equipment was analyzed to identify the failure modes, causes and the effect of the failure. The outcome of the FMEA analysis aided the development of a robust maintenance management strategy, which is based on an optimized mix of corrective, preventive and condition-based monitoring maintenance for the marginal oilfield EPF.

Modification and Optimization of a Baking Oven for Small Scale Bread Production

An existing small-scale single-powered baking oven was modified and optimize into a dual-powered oven. The oven was redesigned to accommodate the initially designed firewood heat source and the newly introduced gas heat source. Four heat exchangers (thermal pipes) were introduced to the baking chamber for effective heat and mass transfer during baking of bread dough. The thermal pipes were made of 2 mm thick hollow galvanized steel pipe of 23 mm diameter and 660 mm length. The performance of the oven was evaluated using the standard performance index, which includes baking capacity, baking efficiency and weight loss of the baked bread. The baked bread’s physical properties were determined and analyzed using Duncan multiple range ANOVA test at significant level of p ˚C, respectively. The physical properties of baked bread, wood-fired were found to correspond with that of gas-fired oven. The modified oven can be used for the baking of dough at domestic, small and medium scale bakery.
