Despite a substantial reduction in the incidence and prevalence of parasitic diseases in the industrialized world, they continue to be an important public health problem in many developing African countries,including Nigeria. However,estimates of the prevalence of such infections among school age children,who bear the greatest health burden due to these diseases,are hard to come *** objective of this study was therefore to determine the prevalence and type of intestinal helminth infections among primary school *** study was cross-sectional in *** participants included 266 pupils recruited from three government primary schools in the Mokola area of Ibadan,*** pupils were interviewed and their stool samples examined for eggs of common *** mean age of the pupils was 9.8±2.6 years,and 128(48.1%) were *** pupils(7.1%) had intestinal helminth *** lumbricoides was found in 17 pupils(6. 4%) and was the most prevalent helminth among the children,while Trichuris trichiura was found in only two subjects(0.8%).Previous infestations and the use of public toilets were found to be significantly associated with current infections(P<0.05).This study demonstrated that the prevalence of intestinal infections was low among the pupils studied,and that Ascaris infection was the commonest infestation.

The dependency of the critical Marangoni number on the geometrical aspect ratio of the floating half zone is essential to predict the onset of oscillatory thermocapillary *** experimental studies in the microgravity conditions on floating half zones of several centimeters in diameter have predicted that the critical Marangoni number increases with the increasing aspect ratio,and the terrestrial experimental studies have predicted the contradictory conclusion for floating half zones of several millimeters in *** the present work,terrestrial experimental studies were conducted on the floating half zones of 5 Centistokes(cSt) silicon oil and 10 cSt silicon *** experimental results show that the critical Marangoni number generally increases with the increasing aspect ratio of the floating half zone and then ***,a further increase of the critical Marangoni number with the increasing aspect ratio occurs for the slender floating half zones.

Objective:To evaluate the effect of short term artemether administration on some blood parameters in adult male Wistar ***:Sixty five albino rats with body weight of 190-220 g were used for the four-phased study. The animals were randomly divided into five groups. The first-four groups of 15 rats were further divided into 3 subgroups of 5 rats. The drug was administered orally at sub-optimal, therapeutic, and high doses of 25, 50 and 75 mg/kg bw,respectively to the rats for 1 day, 2 days and 3 days. Blood samples were collected by cardio-puncture from the rats for hematology at the end of each phase. The last group served as control,and they were given waterad ***:Artemether caused significant reduction(P<0.05)of the hematological profile of the animals in a dose dependent manner. Discontinuation of the drug use however showed gradual recovery of the depressed indices of the blood ***:The results suggest that artemether can induce reversible changes in hematological profiles of rats by extension man. This can probably aggravate anemia when artemether is administered to malaria patients. Hence, the study supports the use of the drug with cautione specially in patients prone to anemic tendencies.

Objective:The objective of this study was to identify the ethno-medicinal values of some selected plant species in Federal College of Wildlife Management,New Bussa,Niger state,***:Three methods of data collection were employed:(1) reconnansance survey of the College Estate was carried out to identify some selected medicinal plants found within the area:(2) field observations alongside personal recognition of some of these plant species were carried out and(3) interview was also carried out in three villages around the College Estate to determine the plants being utilized by the *** villages were Kere,Labararu and Poppoi. The various uses of the identified plants and their parts used for the said purposes were *** hundred people were interviewed altogether in these *** information gathered on the medicinal uses of plants includes the type of plants,the part used to cure sickness,preparation of concoction,and the type of sickness *** data gathered were presented and analyzed using ***:The results revealed that the identified plant species were being used in curing various diseases such as dysentery,fever, stomach pains,cough,malaria,yellow fever,diarrhea,gonorrhea,pile,body pains and other ***: The study concluded that since the vast numbers of species in the study area possess medicinal values, there is need to conserve and protect the vegetation of the area from unsustainable exploitations which are the common features of vegetation in the surrounding land uses.

Objective:To investigate Petroselinum crispum Latifolum(parsley) for treating stomach and intestinal disorders in ***:An 80%ethanol extract was prepared from parsley seeds, and its antispasmodic activity assessed by measuring contractions of isolated ilea induced by 60 mM potassium chloride(KG).A piece of ileum from an adult male Wistar rat was dissected and mounted in an organ bath containing Tyrode’s solution,and ileum contractions were recorded by an isotonic transducer under one gram resting *** effect of parsley extract was measured in the presence of two antagonists’ of a - and(***:These experiments showed that parsley extract inhibited the response to 60 mM KC1 in a concentration-dependent manner(P<0.01,n=7).The spasmolytic effect of parsley extract was unaffected by 1μM phentolamine or 1μM ***:This study shows that parsley seed extract is a relaxant of isolated rat ileum and the relaxation effect of extract does not involved adrenergic receptors.

ObjectiveTo preliminarily investigate three different lipid matrices consisting of two natural homolipids from Capra hircus (goat fat) and Bovine Spp. (tallow fat) and one semi-synthetic lipid (Softisan? 142) separately structured with Phospholipon? 90G (P90G) as potential delivery systems for poorly water soluble drugs.MethodsThe structured lipid matrices were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and employed to prepare solid lipid microparticles (SLMs) by the melt homogenization method using gradient concentrations of polysorbate 80 and at different emulsification times of 2, 5 and 10 min using a Silverson mixer. The SLMs were analyzed for morphology and particle size, thermal properties, stability studies and determination of injectability.ResultsThe results showed that SLM production was optimum at 5 % of lipid matrices, 1.5 % of polysorbate 80 and emulsification time of 5 min. Increase in polysorbate 80 concentrations decreased the particle size of the SLMs. The SLMs were well formed, spherical, smooth and non-porous with particle sizes in the ranges of (13.90 ± 2.10) μm - (0.09 ± 0.01) μm for SLMs produced from the structured - tallow fat; (13.40 ± 1.30) μm - (0.10 ± 0.01) μm for the structured - goat fat and (13.40±2.00) μm - (2.10± 1.00)μm for the structured Softisan? 142 lipid matrices. DSC traces showed that Softisan? 142 was the most crystalline of all three bulk matrices due to its high enthalpy (?7.962 mW/mg) while tallow fat was the least (?5.067 mW/mg) but addition of P90G to the matrices lowered their enthalpies mostly in the structured goat fat matrices. The SLMs when stored at 4-6 ° were most stable and syringeable with 27 G needle.ConclusionsThis suggests that structured goat fat matrices with the enthalpy of ?2.813 mW/mg will mostly favour drug loading of some poorly soluble drugs more than tallow fat (?4.892 mW/mg) and Softisan? 142 (?5.501 mW/mg).

Objective:Diagnosis of atypical pathogens as an aetiology for community-acquired pneumonia(CAP) in children is a challenge world *** aim of this study was to detect the frequency of atypical pathogens as a cause of community-acquired pneumonia(CAP) in Egyptian ***:From 50 children(with age ranged from 2 months to 12 years) hospitalized for community-acquired pneumonia;respiratory sputum samples were collected by induction or *** samples were subjected to conventional cultures and Polymerase Chain Reaction(PCR) technique DNA extraction for identification of Mycoplasma,Chlamydia pneumoniae and Legionella ***;A definite pathogen was identified in 78%of the studied children;30% typical bacteria,8%Candida albicans and atypical bacteria in 40%of the pneumonic *** pneumoniae was isolated from 26%of the children while Mycoplasma pneumoniae was isolated from 14%, whereas Legionella pneumophilla was not isolated at ***;Atypical pathogens are evident as a potential aetiology for community-acquired pneumonia in(13.3%) of young and(80%) of older Egyptian children.
