Phenolic compounds affect production of pyocyanin, swarming motility and biofilm formation of Pseudomonas aeruginosa

Objective: To investigate the effects of plant-derived phenolic compounds(i.e. caffeic acid, cinnamic acid, ferulic acid and vanillic acid) on the production of quorum sensing regulated virulence factors such as pyocyanin, biofilm formation and swarming motility of Pseudomonas aeruginosa(P. aeruginosa) isolates.Methods: Fourteen clinical P. aeruginosa isolates obtained from urine samples and P. aeruginosa PA01 strain were included in the study. The antibacterial effects of phenolic compounds were screened by well diffusion assay. Pyocyanin and biofilm activity were measured from culture supernatants and the absorbance values were measured using a spectrophotometer. Swarming plates supplemented with phenolic acids were point inoculated with P. aeruginosa strains and the ability to swarm was determined by measuring the distance of swarming from the central inoculation site.Results: Tested phenolic compounds reduced the production of pyocyanin and biofilm formation without affecting growth compared to untreated cultures. Moreover, these compounds blocked about 50% of biofilm production and swarming motility in P. aeruginosa isolates.Conclusions: We may suggest that if swarming and consecutive biofilm formation could be inhibited by the natural products as shown in our study, the bacteria could not attach to the surfaces and produce chronic infections. Antimicrobials and natural products could be combined and the dosage of antimicrobials could be reduced to overcome antimicrobial resistance and drug side effects.

Optimization of drill bit replacement time in open-cast coal mines

To gain a competitive edge within the international and compet让ive setting of coal markets, coal producers must find new ways of reducing costs. Increasing bench drilling efficiency and performance in open-cast coal mines has the potential to generate savings. Specifically, monitoring, analyzing, and optimizing the drilling operation can reduce drilling costs. For example, determining the optimal drill bit replacement time will help to achieve the desirable penetration rate. This paper presents a life data analysis of drill bits to fit a statistical distribution using failure records. These results are then used to formulate a cost minimization problem to estimate the drill bit replacement time using the evolutionary algorithm. The effect of cost on the uncertainty associated with replacement time is assessed through Monte-Carlo simulation. The relationship between the total expected replacement cost and replacement time is also presented. A case study shows that the proposed approach can be used to assist with designing a drill bit replacement schedule and minimize costs in open-cast coal mines.

Chronic complications of spinal cord injury

Spinal cord injury(SCI) is a serious medical condition that causes functional, psychological and socioeconomic disorder. Therefore, patients with SCI experience significant impairments in various aspects of their life. The goals of rehabilitation and other treatment approaches in SCI are to improve functional level, decrease secondary morbidity and enhance health-relatedquality of life. Acute and long-term secondary medical complications are common in patients with SCI. However, chronic complications especially further negatively impact on patients' functional independence and quality of life. Therefore, prevention, early diagnosis and treatment of chronic secondary complications in patients with SCI is critical for limiting these complications, improving survival, community participation and health-related quality of life. The management of secondary chronic complications of SCI is also important for SCI specialists, families and caregivers as well as patients. In this paper, we review data about common secondary longterm complications after SCI, including respiratory complications, cardiovascular complications, urinary and bowel complications, spasticity, pain syndromes, pressure ulcers, osteoporosis and bone fractures. The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of risk factors, signs, symptoms, prevention and treatment approaches for secondary long-term complications in patients with SCI.

Reconstruction of the urethral defects with autologous fascial tube graft in a rabbit model

Aim： To investigate the feasibility of the autologous fascia graft in urethra defect reconstruction. Methods： In 24 adult male rabbits, a standardized defect （17 mm） was created within the midportion of each urethra. Two-cm long fascial tube grafts were interposed between the cut ends of the urethra. Twenty-four rabbits were divided into 12 groups. At 0, 3, 10, 15, 21, 30, 45, 60, 90, 120, 150, and 180 days postoperatively, one group was killed. In the first four groups, rabbits were killed and specimens were obtained for histological examination. After 21 postoperative days, in the subsequent eight groups, retrograde urethrograms were carried out to evaluate urethral patency and caliber, then rabbits were killed and specimens were obtained. Results： In the histological study, advancement of the urethral transitional epithelium along scaffold provided by the fascial graft was determined. At the 30th day, the new urethra was completely covered with the transitional epithelium. Fistula formation was observed in two of 24 rabbits. In urethrograms, narrowing was determined in three of 16 rabbits. Conclusion： For segmental urethral reconstruction, fascial graft is a good urethral substitute because of its rapid epithelization capacity, low contraction degree and thinness. We therefore propose the use of fascial grafts for reconstruction of male-urethra defects in humans.

Effects of soil conservation practices on soil erosion and the size selectivity of eroded sediment on cultivated slopes

Soil conservation practices can greatly affect the soil erosion process,but limited information is available about its influence on the particle size distribution(PSD)of eroded sediment,especially under natural rainfall.In this study,the runoff,sediment yields,and effective/ultimate PSD were measured under two conventional tillage practices,downhill ridge tillage(DT)and plat tillage(PT)and three soil conservation practices,contour ridge tillage(CT),mulching with downhill ridge tillage(MDT),and mulching with contour ridge tillage(MCT)during 21 natural rainfall events in the lower Jinsha River.The results showed that(1)soil conservation practices had a significant effect on soil erosion.The conventional tillage of DT caused highest runoff depth(0.58 to 29.13 mm)and sediment yield(0.01 to 3.19 t hm^(-2)).Compared with DT,the annual runoff depths and sediment yields of CT,MDT and MCT decreased by 12.24%-49.75%and 40.79%-88.30%,respectively.(2)Soil conservation practices can reduce the decomposition of aggregates in sediments.The ratios of effective and ultimate particle size(E/U)of siltand sand-sized particles of DT and PT plots were close to 1,indicating that they were transported as primary particles,however,values lower/greater than 1 subject to CT,MDT and MCT plots indicated they were transported as aggregates.The ratios of E/U of claysized particles were all less than 1 independently of tillage practices.(3)The sediments of soil conservation practices were more selective than those of conventional tillage practices.For CT,MDT and MCT plots,the average enrichment ratios(ERs)of clay,silt and sand were 1.99,1.93 and 0.42,respectively,with enrichment of clay and silt and depletion of sand in sediments.However,the compositions of the eroded sediments of DT and PT plots were similar to that of the original soil.These findings support the use of both effective and ultimate particle size distributions for studying the size selectivity of eroded sediment,and provide a scientific basis for revealing the erosion mechanism

Neurochemical metabolites in the medial prefrontal cortex in bipolar disorder A proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy study

The aim of this study was to investigate proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy metabolite values in the medial prefrontal cortex of individuals with euthymic bipolar disorder. The subjects consisted of 15 patients with euthymic bipolar disorder type I and 15 healthy controls. We performed proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy of the bilateral medial prefrontal cortex and measured levels of N-acetyl aspartate, choline and creatine. Levels of these three metabolites in the medial prefrontal cortex were found to be lower in patients with bipolar disorder compared with healthy controls. A positive correlation was found between illness duration and choline levels in the right medial prefrontal cortex. Our study suggests that during the euthymic period, there are abnormalities in cellular energy and membrane phospholipid metabolism in the medial prefrontal cortex, and that this may impair neuronal activity and integrity.

Effect of refractive error on temperament and character properties

AIM: To determine the effect of refractive error on temperament and character properties using Cloninger’s psychobiological model of personality.METHODS: Using the Temperament and Character Inventory(TCI), the temperament and character profiles of 41 participants with refractive errors(17 with myopia,12 with hyperopia, and 12 with myopic astigmatism) were compared to those of 30 healthy control participants.Here, temperament comprised the traits of novelty seeking, harm-avoidance, and reward dependence, while character comprised traits of self-directedness,cooperativeness, and self-transcendence.RESULTS: Participants with refractive error showed significantly lower scores on purposefulness,cooperativeness, empathy, helpfulness, and compassion(P <0.05, P <0.01, P <0.05, P <0.05, and P <0.01,respectively).CONCLUSION: Refractive error might have a negative influence on some character traits, and different types of refractive error might have different temperament and character properties. These personality traits may be implicated in the onset and/or perpetuation of refractive errors and may be a productive focus for psychotherapy.

Brassica taxa occur naturally and are also cultivated in Turkey.Due to their economic importance,several cultivars have been extensively cultivated in certain regions of the country.Alongside extensive cultivation for vegetable production of the other species of the genus,Brassica juncea has very limited cultivation.Five native species of Brassica are known from restricted locations in Turkey with only a few collections.Among them,Brassica elongata is distributed all over the Central and Eastern parts of the country and it prefers unfertile soils on hillsides.Highlighting the current data about the Brassica taxa would lead to new initiatives for Brassica research dealing with both the genetic structure and the origin of the taxa.Diagnostic characters of the genera closely related to Brassica have been discussed under the relevant genera.Additionally,an overview for the Turkish Brassiceae tribe,both native and cultivated,has been presented and the relevant identification keys have been supplied for updating.

A novel model of retinopathy of prematurity in normobaric hyperoxic conditions

AIM：To examine changes in retinal vasculature after treatment with different oxygen concentrations from common retinopathy of prematurity（ROP） models and to determine a novel and practical ROP model.METHODS：A sample of 14 newborn Sprague-Dawley rats was used.The study group（n=7） was exposed to95%oxygen for 4h per day followed by normoxic laboratory conditions for 20 h.This cycle was repeated for 14 d.The control group（n=7） was subjected to normobaric normoxic conditions.On postnatal day 14（P14）,the two groups were placed in room air for 7d.On P21,the two groups were examined using indirect ophthalmoscopy.All eyes were enucleated for immunofluorescence（IF） staining of the vasculature of retinas and analysis of vascular endothelial growth factor（VEGF）,hypoxia inducible factor-1 alpha（HIF-1α）,placental growth factor（PLGF） in vitreous humor,and then the rats were sacrificed by decapitation.All procedures were repeated using another litter of 14 pups.RESULTS：In the study group and under normobaric hyperoxic conditions,retinal neovascularization and peripheral avascular retina were determined in 85%of the rats through indirect ophthalmoscopic examination.Also IF staining of retina of the study group showed retarded peripheral vascular growth.The difference between the two groups for VEGF,HIF-1α and PLGF concentrations of vitreous humor was statistically significant（P=0.003,0.007,0.027 respectively）.CONCLUSION：Fluctuating oxygen concentrations are primarily responsible for retinal neovascularization.Our new ROP model is practical and applicable for all retinal neovascularization studies,considering the laboratory procedures.

Marine Accident Analysis with GIS

In this study, marine casualties which are recorded Global Integrated Shipping Information System (GISIS) in 2007-2011, result in death, injury, economic loss and environmental pollution are discussed. The studied types of ships are container, bulk dry, general cargo, roro, ropax, passenger and tankers. The information contained in GISIS system is textual format and it is difficult to systematically analyze this information. For this reason, by creating a new data base, which is Microsoft Excel-based, ship accidents are classified according to name, flag state and type of ship, type, size and coordinates of the accidents that are evaluated by entering the Geographical Information System(GIS). In the study, all marine areas having been separated into ranges in ArcGIS 10 program, the marine areas with intensive marine accidents have been determined and marine accident chart has been created. As a result of the study, high risk marine areas are Strait of Dover and Hamburg in the North Europe, Belfast Shores in Ireland, the seas surrounding Great Belt, Kattegat and Copenhagen in Baltic Sea, In far east, Kanmon Strait, Urage Channel and Bungo Strait in Japan, Shanghai, Ningbo and Hong Kong in China.
