Comparison of satellite images with different spatial resolutions to estimate stand structural diversity in urban forests

The structural diversity in urban forests is highly important to protect biodiversity. In particular, fruit trees and bush species, cavity-bearing trees and coarse, woody debris provide habitats for animals to feed, nest and hide. Improper silvicultural practices, intensive recreational use and illegal harvesting lead to a decline in the structural diversity in forests within larger metropolitan cities. It is important to monitor the structural diversity at definite time intervals using effective technologies with a view to instituting the necessary conservation measures. The use of satellite images seems to be appropriate to this end. Here we aimed to identify the associations between the textural features derived from the satellite images with different spatial resolutions and the structural diversity indices in urban forest stands (Shannon-Wiener index, complexity index, dominance index and density of wildlife trees). RapidEye images with a spatial resolution of 5 m × 5 m, ASTER images with a spatial resolution of 15 m × 15 m and Landsat-8 ETM satellite images with a spatial resolution of 30 m × 30 m were used in this study. The first-order (standard deviation of gray levels) and second order (GLCM entropy, GLCM contrast and GLCM correlation) textural features were calculated from the satellite images. When associations between textural features in the images and the structural diversity indices were assessed using the Pearson correlation coefficient, very high associations were found between the image textural features and the diversity indices. The highest association was found between the standard deviation of gray levels (SDGLRAP) derived from RVIRAP of RapidEye image and the Shannon-Wiener index (H h) calculated on the basis of tree height (R 2 = 0.64). Comparison of trifocal toric and bifocal toric intraocular lens implantation in patients with cataract and high corneal astigmatism

AIM:To investigate and compare the quality of life,satisfaction,contrast sensitivity,glare,depth perception,and intraocular lens(IOL)rotation in patients who underwent trifocal toric and bifocal toric ***:A total of 80 eyes of 40 patients were included in this prospective *** patients in each group were implanted with trifocal toric and bifocal toric IOL,*** and postoperative 6-month measurements were recorded for both patient *** anterior and posterior segment examinations,distance-intermediate-near visual acuity values and the visual function scale questionnaire results were evaluated at these *** satisfaction,contrast sensitivity,glare,intermediate-near and distance stereopsis and IOL rotation were also ***:No significant difference was found between the groups in terms of distance and near visual acuities(P=0.269,P=0.451).Intermediate visual acuity was significantly increased in the trifocal toric group(P0.05).The overall satisfaction in the trifocal toric group was significantly higher than in the bifocal toric group(P=0.03).The highest sensitivity was observed at 6 cpd spatial frequency in all patients under photopic conditions(1.80±0.24 logU,1.74±0.20 logU).Distance-intermediate-near binocular depth perception results in both groups were higher in the trifocal toric group(P=0.02,0.048,0.003,respectively).Although there was no significant difference for 3 meters stereopsis,the trifocal toric group had higher depth perception(P=0.577).Mean rotation was 5.76°±3.93°in the trifocal toric group and 12°±7.1°in the bifocal toric ***:Better results in the middle distance are obtai

Platinum-induced neurotoxicity: A review of possible mechanisms

Patients treated with platinum-based chemotherapy frequently experience neurotoxic symptoms, which may lead to premature discontinuation of therapy. Despitediscontinuation of platinum drugs, these symptoms can persist over a long period of time. Cisplatin and oxaliplatin, among all platinum drugs, have significant neurotoxic potential. A distal dose-dependent symmetrical sensory neuropathy is the most common presentation of platinum neurotoxicity. DNA damage-induced apoptosis of dorsal root ganglion(DRG) neurons seems to be the principal cause of neurological symptoms. However, DRG injury alone cannot explain some unique symptoms such as cold-aggravated burning pain affecting distal extremities that is observed with oxaliplatin administration. In this article, we briefly reviewed potential mechanisms for the development of platinum drugs-associated neurological manifestations.

Radiotherapy for Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumors

Objective： Gastrointestinal stromal tumors （GISTs） are rare mesenchymal tumors of the gastrointestinal tract, which fiequently cause intraabdominal metastases. The current standard of care is surgery for localized cases, and adjuvant imatinib is recommended for tumors with a high risk of recurrence. To date. radiotherapy has not been commonly accepted as a part of l-nultimodality treatment approach other than palliation. However, recently published case reports and some small series suggest that radiotherapy is a valuable option for controlling locally progressive, drug-resistant disease. The aim of this review is to provide a viewpoint from a radiation oncologist concerning the management of GISTs, especially rectal GIST, and clarify the role and technical aspects of radiotherapy in the treatment approach. Data Sources： A comprehensive search in PubMed using the keywords ＂＇radiotherapy for rectal GIST＂ and ＂＇rectal GIST＂ was undertaken. The literature search included the related articles after 1995. Study Selection： The main articles including rectal GIST case reports and GIST series containing rectal cases were the primary references. Results： Surgery is tile mainstay of treatment, However, to date, radiotherapy is included in the multidisciplinary treatment strategy of rectal GISTs in some circumstances with palliative, adjuvant, or definitive intent using different treatment doses and fields. Conchlsions： Recently reported Iong-terrn local control rates indicate that GIST is a radiosensitive disease. This makes radiotherapy a valuable alternative in GIST management with curative intent, especially in patients who （ I ） cannot tolerate or are resistant to chemotherapy agents. （2） have an unresectable disease, （3） have a gross or microscopic residual disease after surgery, and （4） have a recurrent disease.

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography during pregnancy without radiation

AIM： To present our experience with pregnant patients who underwent endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography （ERCP） without using radiation, and to evaluate the acceptability of this alternative therapeutic pathway for ERCP during pregnancy. METHODS： Between 2000 and 2008, six pregnant women underwent seven ERCP procedures. ERCP was performed under mild sedoanalgesia induced with pethidine HCI and midazolam. The bile duct was cannulated with a guidewire through the papilla. A catheter was slid over the guidewire and bile aspiration and/or visualization of the bile oozing around the guidewire was used to confirm correct cannulation. Following sphincterotomy, the bile duct was cleared by balloon sweeping. When indicated, stents were placed. Confirmation of successful biliary cannulation and stone extraction was made by laboratory, radiological and clinical improvement. Neither fluoroscopy nor spot radiography was used during the procedure. RESULTS： The mean age of the patients was 28 years （range, 21-33 years）. The mean gestational age for the fetus was 23 wk （range, 14-34 wk）. Five patients underwent ERCP because of choledocholithiasis and/or choledocholithiasis-induced acute cholangitis. In one case, a stone was extracted after precut papillotomy with a needle-knife, since the stone was impacted. One patient had ERCP because of persistent biliary fistula after hepatic hydatid disease surgery. Following sphincterotomy, scoleces were removed from the common bile duct. Two weeks later, because of the absence of fistula closure, repeat ERCP was performed and a stent was placed. The fistula was closed after stent placement. Neither post-ERCP complications nor premature birth or abortion was seen. CONCLUSION： Non-radiation ERCP in experienced hands can be performed during pregnancy. Stent placement should be considered in cases for which complete common bile duct clearance is dubious because of a lack of visualization of the biliary tree.

Engineered Production of Bioactive Natural Products from Medicinal Plants

Plant natural products have been particularly important due to their use in food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries. In particular, Traditional Chinese Medicine provides a precious potential for the discovery of bioactive natural products and development of novel modern medicines. However, the existing production methods for plant natural products such as chemical synthesis and plant extraction does not meet the current demand. Due to their environmental and economic concerns, engineered production of valuable natural products in microbial hosts has become an attractive alternative platform. This review covers the recent advances in the engineered production of plant natural products in microorganisms. A special focus was placed on the biotechnological production of plant-derived terpenoids, flavonoids, and alkaloids. Some successful examples of engineered production of plant natural products(or their precursors) such as artemisinin, paclitaxel, naringenin, quercetin, berberine, and noscapine are summarized. This clearly indicates that the engineered production method is a promising approach with various advantages over current methods.
