It was tried to develop the preparation method for microencapsulating the uycalyptus oil containing fine aqueous droplets by using the interfacial condensation reaction between hydroxyl propyl methyl cellulose and tannic acid. Uycalyptus oil containing fine aqueous droplets was dispersed in the continuous water phase to form the (W/O)/W emulsion. Tannic acid and hydroxyl propyl methyl cellulose were dissolved in the inner aqueous droplets and in the outer continuous water phase, respectively. Tannic acid transferred through the oil phase from the inner water droplets to the interface between the oil phase and the continuous water phase and then, reacted with hydroxyl propyl methyl cellulose. In the experiment, the concentrations of hydroxyl propyl methyl cellulose and tannic acid were mainly changed stepwise. The uycalyptus oil containing the fine water droplets could be microencapsulated satisfactorily. It was found that the microcapsules were composed of the gelated hydroxyl propyl methyl cellulose film as the shell, the fine aqueous droplets as the first core and the oil droplet as the second core.

We have tried to prepare the porous silicone resin sheet with the phase inversion method in parallel with the non solvent induced phase separation method. In the experiment, ethyl acetate and water were adopted as a good solvent and a poor solvent for silicone resin, respectively and ethyl alcohol as an amphiphilic solvent was used to increase the solubility of ethyl acetate in water and decrease the interfacial tension by mass transfer from water to ethyl acetate. The concentration of silicone resin in ethyl acetate and the oil soluble surfactant species were changed. Increasing the concentration of silicone resin could depress coalescence between the water droplets in the (W/O) dispersion and increase the porosity and pore number density of silicone resin sheet. Span 80 among the oil soluble surfactant species made the porosity and pore number density larger. The effect of physical proparties of liquids concerned on the porosity and pore number density was discussed on the basis of dispersing behavior of liquid droplets in the liquid-liquid dispersion. The hollow silicone resin particles could be prepared by applying the preparation method presented here.

Cloud cavitation shows an unsteady periodic tendency under a certain flow condition. In a cavitating water jet flow with cavitation clouds, the cavities or the clouds produce high impact at their collapse. In order to make clear a mechanism of the periodic cavity behavior, we experimentally examine the behavior in a transparent cylindrical convergent-divergent nozzle using a high-speed video camera. An effect of upstream pressure fluctuation due to a plunger pump is investigated from a viewpoint of unsteady behavior in a cavitating water jet. As a result, it is found that the cavitating flow has two kinds of oscillation patterns in the cavity length (cavitation cloud region). One is due to the upstream pressure fluctuation caused by the plunger pump. The other is much shorter periodic motion related to the characteristic oscillation of cavitation clouds accompanied with the shrinking (reentrant), growing and shedding motion of the clouds.

Familial adenomatous polyposis is associated with a high incidence of malignancies in the upper gastrointestinal tract (particularly ampullary adenocarcinomas). However, few reports have described a correlation between familial adenomatous polyposis and gallbladder neoplasms. We present a case of a 60-year-old woman with familial adenomatous polyposis who presented with an elevated mass in the neck of the gallbladder (measuring 16 mm × 8 mm in diameter) and multiple small cholecystic polyps. She had undergone a total colectomy for ascending colon cancer associated with familial adenomatous polyposis 22 years previously. The patient underwent laparoscopic cholecystectomy under a preoperative diagnosis of multifocal gallbladder polyps. Pathologic examination of the resected gallbladder revealed more than 70 adenomatous lesions, a feature consistent with adenoma of the gallbladder. This case suggests a requirement for long-term surveillance of the biliary system in addition to the gastrointestinal tract in patients with familial adenomatous polyposis.

Preparation of Composite Particles by Forming Pickering Emulsion Followed by Drying-In-Liquid and Effect of Stepwise Addition of Solid Powder on Structure of Composite Particles

It was tried to prepare composite particles made of polymer and two kinds of solid powders by forming Pickeringemulsion followed by the drying-in-liquid method and to investigate how the stepwise addition of solid powders affected the contained ratio and adhesion ratio of solid powders and the structure of composite particles. Limonene oil dissolving expanded polystyrene and ethylene glycol were adopted as the dispersed phase and the continuous phase, respectively. Magnetite and titanium dioxide were used as solid powders. Magnetite was added before or after formation of the (O/W) dispersion. Titanium dioxide was added at the various elapsed times from addition of magnetite. Titanium dioxide adhered only on the surface of composite particles irrespective of addition time. At the earlier addition of both solid powders, the surface-covering type composite particles were prepared. At the latter addition of titanium dioxide, a part of magnetite adhered on the surface and the remainder was dispersed into composite particle.

Preparation of Microcapsules Containing Camellia Oil with Heterocoagulation between Chitosan and Oleic Acid

It was tried to microencapsulate camellia oil using heterocoagulation between fatty acid dissolved in camellia oil and chitosan dissolved in the continuous water phase. Oleic acid as a fatty acid was dissolved in camellia oil in order to certainly form the microcapsule shell made from oleic acid and chitosan. The microcapsules were observed with optical microscope and characterized about the diameters, ζ-potential, FTIR analysis and adhesion feature on human hair. Microcapsules with the mean diameter in the range from ca. 1.5 μm to 4.5 μm could be prepared with the preparation method presented in this study. The oil droplets of camellia oil charged negatively to be -54.6 mV and the microcapsules charged positively to be 59.6 mV. The microcapsules adhered well on the negatively charged human hair and were kept stably before and after drying at room temperature for 24 h and blowing.

Low-Speed Aerodynamic Characteristics of Supercritical Airfoil with Small High-Lift Devices from Flow Pattern Measurements

In this paper, the lift coefficients of SC-0414 airfoil are estimated by applying modified Yamana’s method to the flow visualization results, which are obtained by utilizing the smoke tunnel. The application of the modified Yamana’s method is evaluated with two calculation methods. Additionally, the lift estimation, wake measurements, and numerical simulations are performed to clarify the low-speed aerodynamic characteristics of the SC airfoil with flaps. The angle of attack was varied from −5° to 8°. The flow velocity was 12 m/s and the Reynolds number was 1.6 × 105. As a result, the estimated lift coefficients show a good agreement with the results from reference data and numerical simulations. In clean condition, the lift coefficients calculated from the two methods show quantitative agreement, and no significant difference could be confirmed. However, the slope of the lifts calculated from ys is higher and closer to the reference data than those obtained from sc, where ys denotes the height where the distance from the streamline to the reference line is the largest, and sc denotes the displacement of the center of pressure from the origin of the coordinate, respectively. In the case of flaps, the GFs have an observable effect on the aerodynamic performance of the SC-0414 airfoil. When the height of the flap was increased, the lift and drag coefficients increased. The installation of a GF with a height equal to 1% of the chord length of the airfoil significantly improved the low-speed aerodynamic performance of SC airfoils.

Synchronous rectal and esophageal cancer treated with chemotherapy followed by two-stage resection

We report a case of 61-year-old male who had synchronous advanced rectal cancer involving the urinary bladder massively associated with multiple liver metastases, and esophageal cancer successfully treated by neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by two-stage resection. Although complete resection of each of the lesions was considered possible by performing anterior pelvic exenteration, liver resection, and esophagectomy, it might be impossible for the patient to endure the stress of all of these operative procedures at once. Therefore, we planned to perform staged treatment with prioritizing consideration. First, we instituted chemotherapy with the FOLFOX(oxaliplatin + fluorouracil + leucovorin) plus cetuximab regimen, which could adequately control both rectal and esophageal cancer. After 6 cycles of chemotherapy, high anterior resection combined with cystoprostatectomy and lateral segmentectomy plus partial hepatectomy was performed followed by staged esophagectomy with three-field lymph node dissection. It was possible to use oxaliplatin and cetuximab safely as neoadjuvant therapy not only for advanced rectal cancer but for esophageal cancer, and it was effective.
