BACKGRoUND Women with gestational diabetes mellitus(GDM)are at a seven-fold higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes(T2D)within 7-10 years after childbirth,compared with those with normoglycemic *** raised fasting blood glucose(FBG)levels has been said to be the main significant predictor of postpartum progression to T2D,it is difficult to predict who among the women with GDM would develop ***,we conducted a cross-sectional retrospective study to examine the glycemic indices that can predict postnatal T2D in Emirati Arab women with a history of *** To assess how oral glucose tolerance test(oGTT)can identify the distinct GDM pathophysiology and predict possible distinct postnatal T2D *** The glycemic status of a cohort of 4603 pregnant Emirati Arab women,who delivered in 2007 at both Latifa Women and Children Hospital and at Dubai Hospital,United Arab Emirates,was assessed retrospectively,using the International Association of Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Groups(IADPSG)*** the total,1231 women were followed up and assessed in *** FBG and/or the 2-h blood glucose(2hrBG)levels after a 75-g glucose load were measured to assess the prevalence of GDM and T2D,according to the IADPSG and American Diabetes Association(ADA)criteria,*** receiver operating characteristic curve for the oGTT was plotted and sensitivity,specificity,and predictive values of FBG and 2hrBG for T2D were *** Considering both FBG and 2hrBG levels,according to the IADPSG criteria,the prevalence of GDM in pregnant Emirati women in 2007 was 1057/4603(23%),while the prevalence of pre-pregnancy T2D among them,based on ADA criteria,was 230/4603(5%).In the subset of women(n=1231)followed up in 2016,the prevalence of GDM in 2007 was 362/1231(29.6%),while the prevalence of prepregnancy T2D was 36/1231(2.9%).of the 362 pregnant women with GDM in 2007,96/362(26.5%)developed T2D;142/362(39.2%)developed impaired fasting glucose;29/36

Physics-informed machine learning for metamodeling thermal comfort in non-air-conditioned buildings

There is a growing need for accurate and interpretable machine learning models of thermal comfort in ***-informed machine learning could address this need by adding physical consistency to such *** paper presents metamodeling of thermal comfort in non-air-conditioned buildings using physics-informed machine *** studied metamodel incorporated knowledge of both quasi-steady-state heat transfer and dynamic simulation *** thermal comfort in an office located in cold and hot European climates was studied with the number of overheating hours as index.A one-at-a-time method was used to gain knowledge from dynamic simulation with TRNSYS *** knowledge was used to filter the training data and to choose probability distributions for metamodel forms alternative to *** response of the dynamic model was positively skewed;and thus,the symmetric logistic and hyperbolic secant distributions were inappropriate and outperformed by positively skewed *** physical knowledge into the metamodel was much more effective than doubling the size of the training *** highly flexible Kumaraswamy distribution provided the best performance with R2 equal to 0.9994 for the cold climate and 0.9975 for the hot ***-informed machine learning could combine the strength of both physics and machine learning models,and could therefore support building design with flexible,accurate and interpretable metamodels.

A Review on Thermophysical Properties and Nusselt Number Behavior of Al2o3 Nanofluids in Heat Exchangers

During the last several years,the increase in cooling power requirements for heat exchangers have led to an escalation in heat transfer studies being performed on the use of nanofluids as heat transfer ***,limited effort has been attempted to relate and interpret these findings or the anomalies associated with *** paper compiles test data from several studies conducted on different types of heat *** this review,a concentrated effort is spent to clarify the ambiguities regarding the effect of nanoparticle size on the nanofluid thermal conductivity and Nusselt *** show that the nanofluid thermal conductivity is not influenced by the nanoparticle size,but by the clustering of the particles *** less compact the structure of the nanoparticle clustering is,the greater the enhancement in the nanofluid thermal conductivity *** were also compiled to interpret the relation between the nanofluid flow pattern,nanoparticles volume fraction in the base fluid,and the convective heat *** results from the majority of the heat exchanger studies show an increase in the heat transfer coefficient with the increase in nanoparticle volume ***,studies conducted on plate heat exchanges display some *** the majority of the heat exchanger studies with the exception of few,the decrease in the nanoparticle size is shown to result in an enhancement of the bulk fluid Nusselt *** test data also reveal that the effectiveness of the alumina nanoparticles is dependent on the flow *** increase in the nanoparticles concentration is shown to result in an increase in the nanofluid heat transfer enhancement as the fluid is transitioning from laminar to turbulent *** general,the smaller the nanoparticle size is,the greater the enhancement in the fluid Nusselt number is.

Heat Transfer optimization for Air-Mist Cooling between a Stack of Parallel Plates

A theoretical model is developed to predict the upper limit heat transfer between a stack of parallel plates subject to multiphase cooling by air-mist *** model predicts the optimal separation distance between the plates based on the development of the boundary layers for small and large separation distances,and for dilute mist *** results show the optimal separation distance to be strongly dependent on the liquid-to-air mass flow rate loading ratio,and reach a limit for a critical *** these dilute spray conditions,complete evaporation of the droplets takes *** results also show the optimal separation distance decreases with the increase in the mist flow *** proposed theoretical model shall lead to a better understanding of the design of fins spacing in heat exchangers where multiphase spray cooling is used.

Physical modeling of behaviors of cast-in-place concrete piled raft compared to free-standing pile group in sand

Similar to free-standing pile groups, piled raft foundations are conventionally designed in which the piles carry the total load of structure and the raft bearing capacity is not taken into account. Numerous studies indicated that this method is too conservative. only when the pile cap is elevated from the ground level,the raft bearing contribution can be neglected. In a piled raft foundation, pileesoileraft interaction is complicated. Although several numerical studies have been carried out to analyze the behaviors of piled raft foundations, very few experimental studies are reported in the literature. The available laboratory studies mainly focused on steel piles. The present study aims to compare the behaviors of piled raft foundations with free-standing pile groups in sand, using laboratory physical models. Cast-in-place concrete piles and concrete raft are used for the tests. The tests are conducted on single pile, single pile in pile group, unpiled raft, free-standing pile group and piled raft foundation. We examine the effects of the number of piles, the pile installation method and the interaction between different components of foundation. The results indicate that the ultimate bearing capacity of the piled raft foundation is considerably higher than that of the free-standing pile group with the same number of piles. With installation of the single pile in the group, the pile bearing capacity and stiffness increase. Installation of the piles beneath the raft decreases the bearing capacity of the raft. When the raft bearing capacity is not included in the design process, the allowable bearing capacity of the piled raft is underestimated by more than 200%. This deviation intensifies with increasing spacing of the piles.

Pulmonary Diseases Decision Support System Using Deep Learning Approach

Pulmonary diseases are common throughout the world,especially in developing *** diseases include chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases,pneumonia,asthma,tuberculosis,fibrosis,and recently *** general,pulmonary diseases have a similar footprint on chest radiographs which makes them difficult to discriminate even for expert *** recent years,many image processing techniques and artificial intelligence models have been developed to quickly and accurately diagnose lung *** this paper,the performance of four popular pretrained models(namely VGG16,DenseNet201,DarkNet19,and XceptionNet)in distinguishing between different pulmonary diseases was *** the best of our knowledge,this is the first published study to ever attempt to distinguish all four cases normal,pneumonia,CoVID-19 and lung opacity from ChestX-Ray(CXR)*** models were trained using Chest-X-Ray(CXR)images,and statistically tested using 5-fold cross *** individual models,XceptionNet outperformed all other models with a 94.775%accuracy and Area Under the Curve(AUC)of Receiver operating Characteristic(RoC)of 99.84%.on the other hand,DarkNet19 represents a good compromise between accuracy,fast convergence,resource utilization,and near real time detection(0.33 s).Using a collection of models,the 97.79%accuracy achieved by Ensemble Features was the highest among all surveyed methods,but it takes the longest time to predict an image(5.68 s).An efficient effective decision support system can be developed using one of those approaches to assist radiologists in the field make the right assessment in terms of accuracy and prediction time,such a dependable system can be used in rural areas and various healthcare sectors.

Performance Prediction of a Multi-Stage Wind Tower for Indoor Cooling

A theoretical model is developed to establish an indepth understanding of the performance of a three-stage wind tower with a bypass system for indoor cooling in rural dry and hot climates. Model simulations are presented for a wide range of ambient conditions that include inlet wind speed, inlet temperature and relative humidity. Simulation results provide an insight into the desirable water flow rates and air-to-water loadings for comfort zone tem-peratures and relative humidity levels at the exit of the wind tower. Simulations show wind towers with variable cross-sections provide an increase in the cooling power for the same inlet wind speed, inlet air temperature and relative humidity when compared to wind towers with a constant cross-section. The study shall lead to a better understanding to designing wind towers that are both environmentally friendly and energy efficient.

Probiotics for antibiotic-associated diarrhea:Do we have a verdict?

Probiotics use has increased tremendously over the past ten *** was coupled with a surge of data relating their importance in clinical *** diarrhea,whose frequency has risen recently,was one of the earliest targets with data published more than ten years ***,available trials suffer from severe discrepancies associated with variability and heterogeneity of several *** published randomized controlled trials and subsequent meta-analyses suggest benefit for probiotics in the prevention of antibiotic-associated *** same seems to also apply when the data is examined for Clostridium difficile-associated ***,the largest randomized double-blind placebo-controlled trial to date examining the use of a certain preparation of probiotics in antibiotic-associated diarrhea showed disappointing results,but it was flawed with several *** commonest species of probiotics studied across most trials is Lactobacillus;however,other types have also shown similar *** have enjoyed an impeccable safety *** a few reports of severe infections sometimes leading to septicemia,most of the available trials confirm their harmless behavior and show similaradverse events compared to *** a consensus dictating its use is still lacking,it would be advisable at this point to suggest prophylactic use of probiotics to certain patients at risk for antibiotic-associated diarrhea or to those who suffered previous episodes.

Colorectal cancer screening: An updated review of the available options

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. However, colon cancer incidence and mortality is declining over the past decade owing to adoption of effective screening programs. Nevertheless, in some parts of the world, CRC incidence and mortality remain on the rise, likely due to factors including “westernized” diet, lifestyle, and lack of health-care infrastructure and resources. Participation and adherence to different national screening programs remain obstacles limiting the achievement of screening goals. Different modalities are available ranging from stool based tests to radiology and endoscopy with varying sensitivity and specificity. However, the availability of these tests is limited to areas with high economic resources. Recently, FDA approved a blood-based test (Epi procolon®) for CRC screening. This blood based test may serve to increase the participation and adherence rates. Hence, leading to increase in colon cancer detection and prevention. This article will discuss various CRC screening tests with a particular focus on the data regarding the new approved blood test. Finally, we will propose an algorithm for a simple cost-effective CRC screening program.
