Nitrogen use in double cropping soybean with non-fertilized winter oilseed crops

Sustainable intensification of cropping systems is a strategy to increase productivity and reduce disservices of conventional agroecosystems.Camelina[Camelina sativa(L.)Crantz]and field pennycress(Thlaspi arvense L.)are winter annual oilseed crops well suited to fill the fallow period between corn(Zea mays L.)and soybean[Glycine max(L.)Merr.]in the U.S.northern Corn Belt,but their inclusion may be limited by resource use limitations.A 2-year study was conducted from 2015 to 2017 in the U.S.upper Midwest to evaluate the effect of double cropping on winter oilseed crops and soybean productivity and economic performance.Treatments included relay-and sequential-cropped soybean with winter camelina and field pennycress,and monocrop soybean as control.Biomass and grain yield of winter oilseed crops were not affected by cropping system.Averaged over years and cropping systems,winter camelina resulted in more biomass,nitrogen(N)uptake and grain yield by 240,186 and 139% respectively,compared to field pennycress.Soybean biomass,N uptake and yield were higher in relay relative to sequential cropping.Relay soybean resulted in similar total grain yield(soybean+winter oilseed crop)compared to monocropped soybean.Double cropping soybean could maintain net return compared to monocropped soybean.Results indicate that double cropping winter oilseed crops with soybean can be economically viable in the U.S.upper Midwest.yet,research aimed at optimizing yield through N and water use while improving ecosystem services is needed.

Bronchiectasis(BE)has been linked to past viral infections such as influenza,measles,or adenovirus.Two years ago,a new pandemic viral infection severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2(SARS-CoV-2)broke out and it still persists today,and a significant proportion of surviving patients have radiological and clinical sequelae,including BE.Our aim was to thoroughly review the information available in the literature on the bidirectional relationship between SARS-CoV-2 infection and the development of BE,as well as the impact of this infection on patients already suffering from BE.Available information indicates that only a small percentage of patients in the acute phase of coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pneumonia develop BE,although the latter is recognized as one of the radiological sequelae of COVID-19 pneumonia,especially when it is caused by traction.The severity of the initial pneumonia is the main risk factor for the development of future BE,but during the COVID-19 pandemic,exacerbations in BE patients were reduced by approximately 50%.Finally,the impact of BE on the prognosis of patients with COVID-19 pneumonia is not yet known.

The rabbit has been recognized as a valuable model in various biomedical and biological research fields because of its intermediate size and phylogenetic proximity to primates.However,the technology for precise genome manipulations in rabbit has been stalled for decades,severely limiting its applications in biomedical research.Novel genome editing technologies,especially CRISPR/Cas9,have remarkably enhanced precise genome manipulation in rabbits,and shown their superiority and promise for generating rabbit models of human genetic diseases.In this review,we summarize the brief history of transgenic rabbit technology and the development of novel genome editing technologies in rabbits.

Corrosion and passive film characteristics of 3D-printed NiTi shape memory alloys in artificial saliva

Electrochemical tests and surface analysis were applied to study the corrosion behavior and passive film characteristics of three-dimensional-printed NiTi shape memory alloys fabricated by laser-powder bed fusion(LPBF) in artificial saliva at 37.C. The passivity of L-PBF NiTi shows to be influenced by the process parameters and resulting morphological and physicochemical surface properties. The results show that the defects at the surface of L-PBF Ni Ti can promote the passivation rate in the early stages of exposure but a slowly formed passive film shows the best corrosion protection. The thickness of the passive film is positively correlated with its corrosion protective performance. The L-PBF NiTi alloy prepared at a linear energy density of 0.2 J·m^(-1) and volumetric energy density of 56 J·mm^(-3) shows the least defects and best corrosion protection. An outer Ti-rich and inner Ni-rich dense passive film could be also obtained showing higher corrosion resistance.

Chaotic Lid-Driven Square Cavity Flows at Extreme Reynolds Numbers

This paper investigates the chaotic lid-driven square cavity flows at extreme Reynolds numbers.Several observations have been made from this study.Firstly,at extreme Reynolds numbers two principles add at the genesis of tiny,loose counterclockwise-or clockwise-rotating eddies.One concerns the arousing of them owing to the influence of the clockwise-or counterclockwise currents nearby;the other,the arousing of counterclockwise-rotating eddies near attached to the moving(lid)top wall which moves from left to right.Secondly,unexpectedly,the kinetic energy soon reaches the qualitative temporal limit’s pace,fluctuating briskly,randomly inside the total kinetic energy range,fluctuations which concentrate on two distinct fragments:one on its upper side,the upper fragment,the other on its lower side,the lower fragment,switching briskly,randomly from each other;and further on many small fragments arousing randomly within both,switching briskly,randomly from one another.As the Reynolds number Re→∞,both distance and then close,and the kinetic energy fluctuates shorter and shorter at the upper fragment and longer and longer at the lower fragment,displaying tall high spikes which enlarge and then disappear.As the time t→∞(at the Reynolds number Re fixed)they recur from time to time with roughly the same amplitude.For the most part,at the upper fragment the leading eddy rotates clockwise,and at the lower fragment,in stark contrast,it rotates counterclockwise.At Re=109 the leading eddy-at its qualitative temporal limit’s pace—appears to rotate solely counterclockwise.

A new strategy for corrosion protection of porous stainless steel using polypyrrole films

In this work,a method to improve the protection against corrosion of porous sintered stainless steel is presented.It is based on the electrodeposition of polypyrrole(PPy)layers doped with a large size counterion such as dodecylbenzenesulphonic acid(DBSA),a conducting polymer with high corrosion resistance and good biocompatibility.The efficacy of PPy coating depends on the adequate adhesion between the metal substrate and the coating layer.The protection against corrosion has been tested using 316 L stainless steel(SS)powder sintered at different conditions to evaluate the effect of the sintering atmosphere(nitrogen and vacuum)and cooling rates(furnace and water)on corrosion resistance,while wrought 316 L SS has been used as reference material.In addition,two electrochemical deposition techniques have been tested to select the most adequate.Open circuit potential evolution,anodic polarization measurements and electrochemical impedance spectra have been used to evaluate corrosion protection in phosphate buffer saline medium.It has been evidenced that a more homogeneous and stable coating was obtained in the case of porous stainless steel.The corrosion potential shifted to nobler values and the anodic polarization branch became more stable.Coated porous samples have a good passivation performance with a lower stable passive current density and a higher breakdown potential.The transfer electronic resistance and the impedance module increase more than one order of magnitude.Therefore,the porosity of sintered stainless steel is seen as an advantage for the improvement of the adherence of the PPy coatings.The best corrosion protection is found for samples sintered in nitrogen and water-cooled.

Prediabetes and type 2 diabetes implication in central proliferation and neurogenesis

Type 2 diabetes （T2D） is an important risk factor for developing dementias, including Alzheimer＇s disease （AD）. Hyperinsulin- emia and glucose intolerance, as features of T2D, might increase the neurodegeneration process, synaptic loss and brain atrophy, leading to cognitive impairment observed in AD. Also, adult neurogenesis seems to be impaired in AD models. Therefore, we have studied morphological alterations, cell proliferation and neurogenesis in the central nervous system （CNS） from a classical model of T2D, the db/db mouse, and in a prediabetes insulin-resistant model, obtained after long-term high fat diet （HFD） administration to C57B1/6 mice. Db/db mice showed an age-dependent cortical and hippocampal atrophy, whereas in HFD mice cortex and hippocampus were preserved. Neurogen- esis and cell proliferation were increased in young db/db mice, when compared with control mice, whereas no differences were detected in the prediabetic model. We also detected significant correlations between metabolic parameters and central atrophy, altered proliferation and neurogenesis in the central nervous system. Altogether these data support that glycaemia control in elderly patients, could help to control central alterations and improve dementia prognosis.

Maneuvering Angle Rigid Formations With Global Convergence Guarantees

Angle rigid multi-agent formations can simultaneously undergo translational,rotational,and scaling maneuvering,therefore combining the maneuvering capabilities of both distance and bearing rigid formations.However,maneuvering angle rigid formations in 2D or 3D with global convergence guarantees is shown to be a challenging problem in the existing literature even when relative position measurements are available.Motivated by angle-induced linear equations in 2D triangles and 3D tetrahedra,this paper aims to solve this challenging problem in both 2D and3D under a leader-follower framework.For the 2D case where the leaders have constant velocities,by using local relative position and velocity measurements,a formation maneuvering law is designed for the followers governed by double-integrator dynamics.When the leaders have time-varying velocities,a sliding mode formation maneuvering law is proposed by using the same measurements.For the 3D case,to establish an angle-induced linear equation for each tetrahedron,we assume that all the followers'coordinate frames share a common Z direction.Then,a formation maneuvering law is proposed for the followers to globally maneuver Z-weakly angle rigid formations in 3D.The extension to Lagrangian agent dynamics and the construction of the desired rigid formations by using the minimum number of angle constraints are also discussed.Simulation examples are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

Avian malaria,haematocrit,and body condition in invasive wetland passerines settled in southwestern Spain

Avian malaria and related haemosporidian parasites can negatively impact fitness in many songbirds.Research on the malaria infection and its physiological costs on their avian hosts is heavily skewed toward native passerines,with exotic species underrepresented.However,introduced species may carry on and spread new pathogens to native species,and play a role on parasite transmission cycle in invaded bird communities as pathogen reservoir.Here,we molecularly assess the prevalence and diversity of haemosporidian parasites in three introduced wetland passerines(the Red Avadavat Amandava amandava,the yellow-crowned Bishop Euplectes afer,and the Common Waxbill Estrilda astrild)captured during the same season in southwestern Spain.We also explored the relation between parasite infection,body condition,haematocrit,and uropygial gland volume.We detected an overall parasite prevalence of 3.55%,where Common Waxbills showed higher prevalence(6.94%)than Red Avadavats(1.51%).None yellow-crowned Bishops were infected with haemosporidians.Almost 60%of infections were caused by Leucocytozoon,and about 40%by Plasmodium.We identified four unique lineages of Plasmodium and three of Leucocytozoon.Moreover,91%of the identified host-parasite interactions represented new host records for these haemosporidian parasites.Parasite infection was not related to body condition,haematocrit,and uropygial gland volume of the wetland passerines.Haematocrit values varied seasonally among bird species.Additionally,haematocrit was positively related to body condition in the yellow-crowned Bishops,but not in the other species.Red Avadavats had higher haematocrit levels than yellow-crowned Bishops,whereas Common Waxbills showed the lower haematocrit values.The uropygial gland volume was positively correlated with body condition in all bird species.Common Waxbills showed higher uropygial gland volumes related to their body size than birds from other two species.These outcomes highlight the importance of exotic invasive species in the transmission dynam
