the demand for water resources in the area south of the Dead Sea due to continued development, especially at the Arab Potash Company （APC） for production and domestic purposes necessitates that water quality in the area be monitored and evaluated based on the local geology and hydrogeology. the objective of this paper is to monitor seasonal fluctuations of groundwater and to determine how fluctuation in the water levels will affect the groundwater quality. Groundwater levels were found to be influenced by rainfall and pumping of water from the wells for domestic and industrial use. twenty water samples were collected from different wells and analyzed for major chemical constituents both in pre- and post-seasons to determine the quality variation. Chemical constituents are significantly increased after post-season recharge. According to the overall assessment of the area, water quality was found to be useful for drinking, irrigation and industry.

this paper presents results from ground penetrating radar surveys using the SIR-10 B GPR instrument（manufactured by Geophysical Survey System Inc., USA）, with 400 MHz monostatic antenna（model 5 103）. Survey was made over 3 excavation levels along the highway section at the Ras en Naqab escarpment area, Southwest Jordan. A total of 217 m along 4 profiles were covered in the winter of 2012. the objectives of the study are（i） to evaluate the resolution of the GPR technique in the field for detecting and locating anomalies caused by subsurface structures like cavities, fractures and faults, and（ii） to describe stratigraphic nomenclature of the subsurface rocks of the area. 2D interpretation of the obtained data and the geological information demonstrate a strong correlation between the GPR anomalies and the subsurface geology. Based upon the lateral and vertical velocity changes with depth, the thickness and orientation of the subsurface layers are outlined. Analysis of the exposed section shows good agreement between the estimated thicknesses of lithostratigraphic units and the quantitative assessment of the radar waves velocity inferred from GPR data.

A Hydrogeophysical Model of the Relationship between Geoelectric and Hydraulic Parameters, Central Jordan

Geoelectrical soundings using the Schlumberger array were carried out in the vicinity of 23 pumping test sites to determine aquifer parameters, central Jordan. On the basis of aquifer geometry, the area has been di-vided into two hydraulic units: the northern flood plain and the flood plain to its south. Field resistivity data are interpreted in terms of the true resistivity and thickness of subsurface layers. these parameters are then correlated with the available pumping test data. Significant correlations between the transmissivity and modified transverse resistance as well as between the hydraulic conductivity and formation factor were ob-tained for the two hydraulic units, in central Jordan are presented here.

the water quality of major springs in the Yar-mouk Basin (north Jordan) experienced degra-dation due to rapid urbanization and industri-alization. In order to check their suitability for irrigation, drinking and industrial purposes, a research work was conducted to assess the degree of ionic toxicity in these water sources. thirty-six water samples were analyzed for dif-ferent elements of dominant cations and anions such as Ca, Mg, Na, K, Fe, and HCO3 together with other minor ions P, B, NO3, SO4, and Cl. to classify water quality, parameters such as so-dium adsorption ratio (SAR), soluble sodium percentage (SSP) and residual sodium carbon-ate (RSC) were calculated. Concentrations of major cations and anions are low compared to their permissible levels in potable water. the total dissolved solids is 617 mg/l or below, which indicates the presence of fresh water. the fresh water condition is also verified by low to mod-erate electrical conductivity (347-1234 ?S/cm) and lower than 8.09 pH values. the concentra-tion of total iron (0.0-0.09 mg/l) falls below the maximum permissible limit of 1 mg/l. the low SAR (0.5 to 1.34) coupled with low electrical conductivity, gives the water medium salinity hazard and low sodium hazard. thus, the water is general of suitable chemical quality for do-mestic, agricultural and most industrial uses.

A geoelectrical resistivity measurement utilizing the Schlumberger array was made at the Bir Madkour area in the southern part of Wadi Araba, Aqaba Province, Jordan, in order to evaluate the groundwater potential in the area and to provide information on the thickness, lithology, and tectonics of the subsurface layers. twenty-five vertical electrical soundings (VES) were conducted by BGR resistivity instrument in 2000. the AB/2 spacings for VES were taken at 900 m. the data obtained were interpreted by using the classical matching curves and computer modeling techniques. Interpretation of 25 sounding curves indicates that in the Bir Madkour area there are three groups of resistivity values above the basement rocks. these three groups of resistivity values correspond to three geological layers. the groundwater level possible is to coincide with the contact between the alluvial sediments and the Upper Cretaceous rocks. Its depth varies between 70 m and 110 m.

Ninety two vertical electrical Schlumberger soundings were made at the El Lajjun deposit of oil shale, Jordan. these soundings provide information on the distribution of the oil shale deposit and geologic structure of the region. A first, qualitative interpretation of the geoelectrical sounding curves gives a general impression of the geologic setting and the marl bitumen boundaries. However, a more detailed, quantitative interpretation shows the usefulness of the resistivity method in the treatment of problems pertaining to natural resource deposit exploration. Integration geological and borehole data with VES method provided detailed information on the structure and the stratigraphy of the subsurface layers in the El Lajjun deposit of oil shale.

Lineaments in the southeastern Jordan plateau are mapped using gravity data and field studies in order to understand the tectonic origin of these lineaments, especially in relation to the Dead Sea transform （DSt） and the Red Sea opening. Four sets trending E-W, NW-SE, NE-SW, and N-S are identified in gravity data. Field studies generally reveal similar orientations. Field and gravity studies indicate that most of the lineaments are extensional features that correspond to normal faults. Most of these were subsequently reactivated into strike-slip shear fractures. the NW-SE and N-S lineaments represent dilatational fractures. the N-S trending lineaments are the oldest. the E-W lineaments form conjugate shear fractures and are younger than the N-S lineaments. these conjugate shear fractures are also older than other set of conjugate shear fractures oriented NE-SW. the evolution of all these fractures is attributed to the DSt and the Red Sea spreading. Kinematic and dynamic analysis of the two, older and younger, pairs of conjugate strike-slip fractures revealed, respectively, broadly NW-SE and N-S oriented transpressional stress with corresponding transtensional stress oriented NE-SW and E-W.

We present the detailed fundamental stellar parameters of the close visual binary system HD 39438 for the first time. We used Al-Wardat's method for analyzing binary and multiple stellar systems. the method implements Kurucz's plane parallel model atmospheres to construct synthetic spectral energy distributions(SEDs) for both components of the system. It then combines the results of the spectroscopic analysis with the photometric analysis and compares them with the observed ones to construct the best synthetic SED for the combined system. the analysis gives the precise fundamental parameters of the individual components of the system. Based on the positions of the components of HD 39438 on the H-R diagram, and evolutionary and isochrone tracks, we found that the system belongs to the main sequence stars with masses of 1.24 and 0.98 solar masses for the components A and B, respectively, and age of 1.995 Gyr for both components. the main result of HD 39438 is new dynamical parallax, which is estimated to be 16.689 ± 0.03 mas.

根据航磁、重力和地震数据以及地质和辅助地球物理资料，对约旦东北部前寒武纪岩石的轮廓和变化及其上覆的沉积岩石的厚度进行了研究．识别出5个具有特定磁性特征的磁场区，每个磁场区都有其特征的样式和突变的边界，每个磁场区的物质组成存在明显差异，其构造边界均与断层相对应．计算表明基底表面有很大起伏，磁化的前寒武纪岩石深度变化范围为-5000m至-10000m，可以识别出由基底下陷相对应的5个盆地或拗陷带，同时可见3个起伏较大的构造隆起．探测结果表明，古生代建造中发育的主要断裂呈N-S与NNE向，而在新生代建造中发育的断裂则呈NE-SW，NW-SE和E-W向．研究区构造发展的第一构造阶段与E-W向张力有关，第二构造阶段的产物明显受到第三构造阶段发生的构造变形的改造，并与阿拉伯板块的逆时针旋转有关．磁场区之间的移位、错断、拖曳和并置被认为剪切断层所造成．剪切形式表明位移是左行的，即北侧的块体向北西方向移动．
