Large-Scale Traveling Ionospheric Disturbances Observed by GPS Receivers in Antarctica

The paper examines the propagation direction and velocity of large-scale traveling ionospheric disturbances （LST1Ds） during extreme geomagnetic storms in the 23rd solar cycle （e.g., October 2003 and November 2003 storms） using GPS observations. In the analysis, the time delay between the vertical total electron content （VTEC） structures at Scott Base, McMurdo, Davis and Casey GPS stations and the distance between these stations were the main parameters in the determination of LSTIDs propagation speed and direction. The observations during October and November 2003 storms show obvious time delay between the total electron content （TEC） enhancement signatures at these stations. The time delay suggests a movement of the ionospheric disturbances from higher to lower latitudes during the October storm with a velocity of 800-1 200 m/s and poleward propagation of LSTIDs during the November storm with a ve- locity of 300-400 m/s. The equatorward or poleward expansion of LSTIDs during the October and November 2003 storms is probably caused by the disturbances of the neutral temperature occurring close to the dayside convection throat or by the neutral wind oscillation induced by atmospheric gravity waves （AGW） launched from the aurora region.

BACKGROUND In hepatology,the clinical use of endoscopic ultrasound(EUS)has experienced a notable increase in recent *** applications range from the diagnosis to the treatment of various liver ***,this systematic review summarizes the evidence for the diagnostic and therapeutic roles of EUS in liver *** To examine and summarize the current available evidence of the possible roles of the EUS in making a suitable diagnosis in liver diseases as well as the therapeutic accuracy and *** PubMed,Medline,Cochrane Library,Web of Science,and Google Scholar databases were extensively searched until October *** methodological quality of the eligible articles was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa scale or Cochrane Risk of Bias *** addition,statistical analyses were performed using the Comprehensive Meta-Analysis *** Overall,45 articles on EUS were included(28 on diagnostic role and 17 on therapeutic role).Pooled analysis demonstrated that EUS diagnostic tests had an accuracy of 92.4%for focal liver lesions(FLL)and 96.6%for parenchymal liver ***-guided liver biopsies with either fine needle aspiration or fine needle biopsy had low complication rates when sampling FLL and parenchymal liver diseases(3.1%and 8.7%,respectively).Analysis of data from four studies showed that EUS-guided liver abscess had high clinical(90.7%)and technical success(90.7%)without significant ***,EUS-guided interventions for the treatment of gastric varices(GV)have high technical success(98%)and GV obliteration rate(84%)with few complications(15%)and rebleeding events(17%).CONCLUSION EUS in liver diseases is a promising technique with the potential to be considered a first-line therapeutic and diagnostic option in selected cases.

New series of pyrazolo[1,5-α]pyrimidine derivatives 7a-i,11a-c and Schiff bases 13a-c were synthesized and screened for their in vitro antitumor activity against three human carcinoma cell lines,namely colorectal carcinoma（HCT116）,prostate adenocarcinoma（PC-3） and liver carcinoma（HepG-2） using MTT cytotoxicity assay at 100 μg/*** of the tested compounds displayed good anticancer activities against HCT-116 and PC-3 ***,compounds 7d and 11 a showed better antitumor activity than the rest of the compounds against both cell lines.A structure-activity relationship（SAR） has been discussed and structures of the newly synthesized compounds were confirmed by different spectral data（MS,IR,^1H NMR and ^13C NMR） and elemental analysis.

The reliable application of field deployable fluorescent dissolved organic matter(fDOM)probes is hindered by several influencing factors which need to be *** manuscript describes the corrections of temperature,pH,turbidity and inner filter effect on fluorescence signal of a commercial fDOM probe(fDOMs).For this,Australian waters with wide ranging qualities were selected,*** organic carbon(DOC)ranging from∼1 to∼30 mg/L,specific UV absorbance at 254 nm from∼1 to∼6 L/m/mg and turbidity from∼1 to∼350 ***-based model calibration experiments(MCEs)were performed.A model template was developed and used for the development of the correction *** each factor,data generated through MCEs were used to determine model coefficient(α)values by fitting the generated model to the experimental *** discrete factor models were generated by determination of a factor-specificα***αvalues derived for each water of the MCEs subset were consistent for each factor *** indicated generic nature of the fourαvalues across wide-ranging water *** correlation between fDOMs and DOC were achieved after applying the four-factor compensation models to new data(r,0.96,p<0.05).Also,average biases(and%)between DOC predicted through fDOMs and actual DOC were decreased by applying the four-factor compensationmodel(from3.54(60.9%)to 1.28(16.7%)mg/L DOC).These correction models were incorporated into a Mi-crosoft EXCEL-based software termed EXOf-Correct for ready-to-use applications.

Total Esophagogastric Separation in Neurologically Impaired Children: Outcome and Efficacy

Background: Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is one of the most clinical disorders affecting the gastrointestinal tract of neurologically impaired children (NIC). The reported incidence of GERD in NIC ranges from 15% to 75%. For a long time Nissen fundoplication became the first choice for management with some complications. For this reason, and as an alternative to repeated fundoplications, total esophagogastric separation (TEGS) became popular in treating these cases. Even some studies consider TEGS as a primary approach for GERD in NIC. Purpose: The aim of the study was to assess the efficacy and outcome of total esophagogastric separation in cases of severe gastroesophageal reflux in neurologically impaired children. Materials and Methods: Medical records of 11 patients who underwent total esophagogastric separation (TEGS) with Roux en Y anastomosis for recurrent GERD in our institute in pediatric surgery unit, Medina children hospital, KSA, were reviewed retrospectively. Selective criteria included all cases of recurrent GERD in NIC after fundoplications. TEGS was not performed in any case as a primary procedure. Results: Our study included eleven cases, seven males and four females. Their ages ranged from 6 to 14 years. All of them were neurologically impaired, with difficulty to take oral feeds and all cases had GERD or its related complications preoperatively. Median operating time was 5 hours ranging from 3.5 to 7 hours with a median blood loss of 200 ml. Hospital stay ranged from 5 to 17 days with a median of 9 days and median ICU stay was 3.5 days. Complications occurred in four cases (36.3%) with no mortality. Three cases needed reoperations (27.2%). Two cases (18.2%) developed hiatus hernia and were operated between 8 and 10 months postoperatively. Two cases (18.2%) develop adhesive intestinal obstruction who underwent conservative management and passed smoothly. Quality of Nursing Courses as Perceived by Students: Relationship with Their Academic Achievement in Palestine College of Nursing

The purpose of this study was to determine the Bachelor Science of Nursing (BSN), student’s perceptions of the quality of nursing courses taught at Palestine College of Nursing (PCN), which were fundamentals of nursing course, adult nursing course, pediatric nursing course, maternity nursing course, community nursing course, mental health and psychiatric nursing course and nursing management and leadership course, and its relationship with their academic achievement. The Palestine College of Nursing is governmental and Ministry of Health (MOH) affiliated. The sample included 467 nursing students registered in the college who studied the previously mentioned nursing courses. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire developed by the researcher, and guided by literature. That was to assess the included nine quality dimensions of the nursing courses as perceived by the students. Content validity and reliability tests were done for the tool. The study revealed that the total students’ perceptions of the quality of all nurses courses were within average quality level (80.42%). The nursing management course and community health nursing course were of the first two ranks of high quality level (84.54%, and 84.48%, respectively), where mental health and psychiatric nursing course, fundamentals of nursing course, adult health nursing course, pediatric nursing course and maternity health nursing course were the next ranks of average quality level. The study revealed that students’ perceptions of seven dimensions from nine were with average quality level (80.50%). The first rank was the “teacher/instructor characteristics and attributes”, dimension of high quality level (84.44%), while the last rank was “teaching methodology” dimension of average quality level (77.54%). There was a positive relationship between students’ achievement and the courses’ quality dimensions, pertaining objectives of the course, contents of the course, teacher/instructor competencies

1) The paper examines the relationship between electricity demand and climate/non-climate related factors using statistical regression analysis. 2) It focuses on the environmental, demographic, policy (energy pricing) and technological factors as the main factors affecting the consumption pattern in Jordan. 3) The paper also presents the variations occurred in the electricity demand over the period 1994-2008. The variations that are observed during the period of study are: Shifting of the peak load occurrence from evening to morning period, Modification in the annual daily load curve especially in winter season, Variation in relationship between space temperature and demand especially in winter, and dramatic increase in electric generation after year 2003. The shift in peak load from evening to morning period is mainly due to technological factor as a result of wide use of the air conditions in houses, services and government offices for cooling in summer instead of ordinary air fans. The variations in consumption pattern between 2000 and 2007 are mainly associated with economic, social and demographic factors. The high demand at lower space temperature is governed by introducing new appliances for heating in winter as a result of low electricity pricing comparing with gasoline price. The dramatic increase in electric generation after 2003 is probably due to demographic factors as a result of high growth of population after the Gulf war II. 4) The correlation between the daily maximum loads in morning and evening periods with the differential temperature (ΔT) above 20?C threshold in summer and below 15?C threshold in winter, shows pronounced changes in 2007 compared with year 2000. The regression tests show that a decrease of 1?C below 15?C threshold in winter 1) increases the morning demand by only 2 MW/?C in 2000 and 16.7 MW/?C in 2007, 2) decreases the evening peak by ?2.6 MW/1?C in 2000 and increases the evening peak by 22.9 MW/1?C in 2007. Stress during prenatal development is correlated with detrimental cognitive and behavioral outcomes in offspring. However, the long-term impact of prenatal stress(PS) and disrupted glucocorticoid signaling on bone mass and strength is not understood. In contrast, the detrimental effect of lead(Pb) on skeletal health is well documented. As stress and Pb act on common biological targets via glucocorticoid signaling pathways and co-occur in the environment, this study first sought to assess the combined effect of stress and Pb on bone quality in association with alterations in glucocorticoid signaling. Bone parameters were evaluated using microCT, histomorphometry, and strength determination in 8-month-old male mouse offspring subjected to PS on gestational days 16 and 17, lifetime Pb exposure(100 p.p.m. Pb in drinking water), or to both. Pb reduced trabecular bone mass and, when combined with PS, Pb unmasked an exaggerated decrement in bone mass and tensile strength. Next, to characterize a mechanism of glucocorticoid effect on bone, prednisolone was implanted subcutaneously(controlled-release pellet, 5 mg·kg^(-1) per day) in 5-month-old mice that decreased osteoblastic activity and increased sclerostin and leptin levels. Furthermore, the synthetic glucocorticoid dexamethasone alters the anabolic Wnt signaling pathway. The Wnt pathway inhibitor sclerostin has several glucocorticoid response elements, and dexamethasone administration to osteoblastic cells induces sclerostin expression. Dexamethasone treatment of isolated bone marrow cells decreased bone nodule formation, whereas removal of sclerostin protected against this decrement in ***, these findings suggest that bone loss associated with steroid-induced osteoporosis is a consequence of sclerostin-mediated restriction of Wnt signaling, which may mechanistically facilitate glucocorticoid toxicity in bone.
