Development of port fuel injected methanol(M85)-fuelled two-wheeler for sustainable transport

Due to increasingly stringent environmental pollution norms,there is a need for alternate combustion techniques and alternate fuels to keep up with changing trends.One of the viable solutions for India is the adaptation of methanol as a fuel for automotive sector.Therefore,in this study a functional two-wheeler prototype was developed,which uses M85(85%v/v methanol and 15%v/v gasoline)in an electronic control unit(ECU)controlled port fuel injected(PFI)engine.This study included comparative investigations of simulated on-road two-wheeler performance on chassis dynamometer using a gasoline-fuelled motorcycle with stock ECU vis-a-vis M85-fuelled motorcycle using recalibrated ECU.ECU recalibration exhibited that M85-fuelled vehicle was operated at relatively more advanced spark timing compared to baseline gasoline-fuelled vehicle.Performance results showed that M85-fuelled motorcycle produced relatively higher engine power and higher maximum vehicle speed compared to gasoline-fuelled motorcycle.Relatively superior acceleration characteristics(especially at higher speeds)of M85-fuelled motorcycle was another important finding of this study,indicating that M85 provided superior throttle response compared to gasoline.Comparative analysis of raw tailpipe emissions showed that modified M85-fuelled motorcycle emitted relatively higher hydrocarbon(HC),carbon monoxide(CO)and oxides of nitrogen(NO_x)emissions compared to stock gasoline-fuelled motorcycle.However,these emissions can be controlled by using adaptation of suitable after-treatment systems.

Emission profiling of diesel and gasoline cars at a city traffic junction

In congested urban roads, cars must stop at intersections because of city traffic lights. As a result, pedestri- ans and traffic police personnel are exposed to pollutants emanating from the tailpipe of various vehicles at such city trafficjunctions. In this study, various gasoline- and diesel-fueled cars complying with differ- ent emission standards were tested for their emissions in simulated city traffic junction conditions. The engine exhaust from these cars was subjected to physicochemical characterization at different engine speeds under no-load conditions. These engine conditions were chosen because the cars idle at differ- ent engine speeds at a city traffic junction. Gravimetric and real-time measurements were performed for the tailpipe exhaust sampled from these vehicles. Exhaust particles were collected on 47 mm diameter quartz filter papers and subjected to gravimetric analysis for determining the total particulate mass （TPM） and trace metals while the engines were operated at two different engine idling speeds, 1500 rpm （representing low idling） and 2500 rpm （representing high idling）. At similar engine operating condi- tions, TPM and trace metals were lower for the exhaust from gasoline engines compared to the exhaust from diesel engines. Real-time measurements were performed for particle-bound poly-aromatic hydro- carbons （PAHs）, particle number and size distribution, regulated gaseous emissions and smoke opacity of the exhaust at four different engine speeds, 1500, 2000, 2500, and 3000 rpm. Particle-bound PAHs showed a decreasing trend for the vehicles that complied with stricter vehicular emission standards. Higher particle peak number concentrations were observed for diesel exhausts compared to the results for gasoline exhaust. Regulated gaseous emissions were also comoared.

An evaluation of the emission profile for two-wheelers at a traffic junction

Two-wheeler vehicles are an important mode of transportation in developing countries. However, the emissions from two-wheeler vehicles are significant. Urban two-wheeler vehicles with gasoline-fueled engines produce NOx and particulate matter emissions that affect urban air quality. During traffic light stops and programmed stops, for instance, pollutants are emitted and are dangerous to human health. In this experimental study, two-wheeler vehicles with different makes, technologies and engine capacities were tested for exhaust emissions including gravimetric and online measurements at different engine speeds and a no load condition at a simulated traffic junction. Gravimetric measurements were performed by collecting the particulate mass （at two engine speeds： 1500 and 2500 rpm） from a diluted engine-out exhaust on quartz filter paper. Next, these collected particulates were used to determine the presence of metals, as well as the benzene soluble organic fraction （BSOF）. The total particulate mass, BSOF and trace elements were slightly higher at a higher engine speed （2500 rpm）. Online measurements were performed by sampling the engine exhaust （at four engine speeds： 1500, 2000, 2500, and 3000rpm） and using online instruments to determine the particle number and size distribution, the particle-bound polyaromatic hydrocarbons （PAHs）, the gaseous emissions and the smoke opacity. Engines with higher cubic capacity emitted a higher concentration of nano-particles. The particle-bound PAH concentration increased as the engine speed increased, but this concentration was notably low for the highest engine speed tested （3000 rpm）. The regulated gaseous emissions increased as the engine speed increased for all vehicles.

Transcranial direct current stimulation as early augmentation in adolescent obsessive compulsive disorder:A pilot proof-of-concept randomized control trial

BACKGROUND Transcranial direct current stimulation(tDCS)is proven to be safe in treating various neurological conditions in children and adolescents.It is also an effective method in the treatment of OCD in adults.AIM To assess the safety and efficacy of tDCS as an add-on therapy in drug-naive adolescents with OCD.METHODS We studied drug-naïve adolescents with OCD,using a Children’s Yale-Brown obsessive-compulsive scale(CY-BOCS)scale to assess their condition.Both active and sham groups were given fluoxetine,and we applied cathode and anode over the supplementary motor area and deltoid for 20 min in 10 sessions.Reassessment occurred at 2,6,and 12 wk using CY-BOCS.RESULTS Eighteen adolescents completed the study(10-active,8-sham group).CY-BOCS scores from baseline to 12 wk reduced significantly in both groups but change at baseline to 2 wk was significant in the active group only.The mean change at 2 wk was more in the active group(11.8±7.77 vs 5.25±2.22,P=0.056).Adverse effects between the groups were comparable.CONCLUSION tDCS is safe and well tolerated for the treatment of OCD in adolescents.However,there is a need for further studies with a larger sample population to confirm the effectiveness of tDCS as early augmentation in OCD in this population.

BACKGROUND There is scant literature on hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)in patients with Budd-Chiari syndrome(BCS).AIM To assess the magnitude,clinical characteristics,feasibility,and outcomes of treatment in BCS-HCC.METHODS A total of 904 BCS patients from New Delhi,India and 1140 from Mumbai,India were included.The prevalence and incidence of HCC were determined,and among patients with BCS-HCC,the viability and outcomes of interventional therapy were evaluated.RESULTS In the New Delhi cohort of 35 BCS-HCC patients,18 had HCC at index presentation(prevalence 1.99%),and 17 developed HCC over a follow-up of 4601 person-years,[incidence 0.36(0.22-0.57)per 100 person-years].BCS-HCC patients were older when compared to patients with BCS alone(P=0.001)and had a higher proportion of inferior vena cava block,cirrhosis,and long-segment vascular obstruction.The median alpha-fetoprotein level was higher in patients with BCS-HCC at first presentation than those who developed HCC at follow-up(13029 ng/mL vs 500 ng/mL,P=0.01).Of the 35 BCS-HCC,26(74.3%)underwent radiological interventions for BCS,and 22(62.8%)patients underwent treatment for HCC[transarterial chemoembolization in 18(81.8%),oral tyrosine kinase inhibitor in 3(13.6%),and transarterial radioembolization in 1(4.5%)].The median survival among patients who underwent interventions for HCC compared with those who did not was 3.5 years vs 3.1 mo(P=0.0001).In contrast to the New Delhi cohort,the Mumbai cohort of BCS-HCC patients were predominantly males,presented with a more advanced HCC[Barcelona Clinic Liver Cancer C and D],and 2 patients underwent liver transplantation.CONCLUSION HCC is not uncommon in patients with BCS.Radiological interventions and liver transplantation are feasible in select primary BCS-HCC patients and may improve outcomes.

The process of turning forest area into land is known as deforestation or forest degradation. Reforestation as a fraction of deforestation is extremely low. For improved qualitative and quantitative classification, we used Sentinel-1 dataset of State of Para, Brazil to precisely and closely monitor deforestation between June 2019 and June 2023. This research aimed to find out suitable model for classification called Satellite Imaging analysis by Transpose deep neural transformation network (SIT-net) using mathematical model based on Band math approach to classify deforestation applying transpose deep neural network. The main advantage of proposed model is easy to handle SAR images. The study concludes that SAR satellite gives high-resolution images to improve deforestation monitoring and proposed model takes less computational time compared to other techniques.

Deep Learning-Based Speech Emotion Recognition: Leveraging Diverse Datasets and Augmentation Techniques for Robust Modeling

In recent years， Speech Emotion Recognition (SER) has developed into an essential instrument for interpreting human emotions from auditory data. The proposed research focused on the development of a SER system employing deep learning and multiple datasets containing samples of emotive speech. The primary objective of this research endeavor is to investigate the utilization of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) in the process of sound feature extraction. Stretching， pitch manipulation， and noise injection are a few of the techniques utilized in this study to improve the data quality. The investigation includes coverage of these methods. Feature extraction methods including Zero Crossing Rate， Chroma＿stft， MFCC， RMS， and MelSpectogram are used to train a model. By using these techniques， audio signals can be transformed into recognized features that can be utilized to train the model. Ultimately， the study will produce a thorough evaluation of the model’s performance. When this method was applied， the model achieved an impressive accuracy of 94.57% on the test dataset. Proposed work also validated on EMO-BD and IEMOCAP dataset. These consist of further data augmentation， feature engineering， and hyperparameter optimization. By following these development paths， SER systems will be able to be implemented in real-world scenarios with greater accuracy and resilience.

Dear Editor,We read with great interest the recently published article titled“Observation of peripheral refraction in myopic anisometropia in young adults”by Du et al[1].The study conducted at the InEye Hospital of Chengdu University of TCM provides valuable insights into the relationship between anisometropia and peripheral refraction in myopic young adults.We commend the authors for their thorough investigation and adherence to ethical guidelines.While the study contributes significantly to our understanding of myopic anisometropia,we would like to draw attention to some limitations that merit consideration for a comprehensive interpretation of the findings.

Pattern of spatial variability in granulometric and mineralogical characteristics across an ecologically sensitive sub-tropical wetland(Bihar, India)

Floodplain wetlands are dynamic systems undergoing frequent hydro-sedimentological changes. Tropical/subtropical wetlands have even more pronounced climatic and biological influences on the sediment dynamics. In the current study, a protected subtropical wetland in Bihar(India) has been assessed for its sedimentary and mineralogical status. Sediment characteristics and associated granulometric parameters are discussed to highlight the wetland’s hydrogeomorphic character, energy dimension, and the depositional processes taking place. Statistical grain size parameters like graphic mean, graphic skewness,graphic kurtosis, and their interrelations studies have helped in understanding the sources of deposited materials. Multivariate statistics have identified, sand fractions, measures of central tendencies(mean,median, and mode), percent organic matter(%OM) and percent carbonates(%carbonates) as primary factors explaining the maximum variance in the data. The non-parametric Kruskal-Wallis test has identified %sand, %clay, electrical conductivity(EC), and %carbonates as the major factors responsible for significant spatial variability. The grain texture analysis shows that the majority of samples fall in the brackets of clayey silt; silty sand; and sand, silt, and clay. Common mineral components associated with these are quartz, feldspar, clay minerals, etc. The range for the mean grain size lies between 3Φ to 9Φ(Φ is diameter of the sediments) where most of the grain size distributions are symmetrically to fine symmetrically skewed, indicating intermediate energy to adjust to environmental conditions. The granulometric and physicochemical characteristics of the sediment samples also indicate the directional distribution pattern of sediment along the hydrological pathway. Future studies concentrating on the fluvial discharges of water and sediment will be highly insightful in reconstructing the past net sediment accumulation processes in the Baraila Wetland.

Diagnosis and Detection of Alzheimer’s Disease Using Learning Algorithm

In Computer-Aided Detection(CAD)brain disease classification is a vital issue.Alzheimer’s Disease(AD)and brain tumors are the primary reasons of death.The studies of these diseases are carried out by Magnetic Resonance Imaging(MRI),Positron Emission Tomography(PET),and Computed Tomography(CT)scans which require expertise to understand the modality.The disease is the most prevalent in the elderly and can be fatal in its later stages.The result can be determined by calculating the mini-mental state exam score,following which the MRI scan of the brain is successful.Apart from that,various classification algorithms,such as machine learning and deep learning,are useful for diagnosing MRI scans.However,they do have some limitations in terms of accuracy.This paper proposes some insightful pre-processing methods that significantly improve the classification performance of these MRI images.Additionally,it reduced the time it took to train the model of various pre-existing learning algorithms.A dataset was obtained from Alzheimer’s Disease Neurological Initiative(ADNI)and converted from a 4D format to a 2D format.Selective clipping,grayscale image conversion,and histogram equalization techniques were used to pre-process the images.After pre-processing,we proposed three learning algorithms for AD classification,that is random forest,XGBoost,and Convolution Neural Networks(CNN).Results are computed on dataset and show that it outperformed with exiting work in terms of accuracy is 97.57%and sensitivity is 97.60%.
