Respiratory muscle training with electronic devices in the postoperative period of hepatectomy:A randomized study

Exercise manual for liver disease patients

AIM: To increase inspiratory muscle strength and improve the quality of life of candidates for liver ***: Twenty-three candidates for liver transplantation participated in the control group and 14 made up the intervention group. The control group consisted of 18 men and 5 women, body mass index(BMI) 27.3 ± 4.5 kg/m2 and Model for End-Stage Liver Disease(MELD) 18.2 ± 6.1. The intervention group consisted of 11 men and 3 women, BMI 28.6 ± 5.4 kg/m2 and MELD 18 ± 4.5. The presence or absence of ascites was identified in the first patient evaluation and after three months. We evaluated maximal inspiratory pressure(MIP) and maximal expiratory pressure, spirometry, root mean square(RMS) of diaphragm and rectus abdominis, and the quality of life. The exercises were performed daily by patients at home for three months and were supervised at distance monthly. The manual consisted of diaphragmatic breathing exercises, diaphragmatic isometric exercise, Threshold IMT®, lifting upper limbs with a bat and strengthening the abdomen. RESULTS: There was significant difference(P = 0.01) between the first(initial) and the third month(final) MIP in the control group and in the intervention group, but there was no difference(P = 0.45) between the *** RMS of the diaphragm was lower(P = 0.001) and the functional capacity was higher(P = 0.006) in the intervention group compared to the control. The general health and mental health domains received higher scores after three months in the control group(P = 0.01) and the intervention group(P = 0.004), but there was no significant difference between them. The comparison between the presence of initial ascites with the presence of ascites was performed after three months in the control group(P = 0.083) and intervention group(P = 0.31). Arboviral diseases are viral infections transmitted to humans through the bites of arthropods,such as mosquitoes,often causing a variety of pathologies associated with high levels of morbidity and *** the past decades,these infections have proven to be a significant challenge to health systems worldwide,particularly following the considerable geographic expansion of the dengue virus(DENV)and its most recent outbreak in Latin America as well as the difficult-tocontrol outbreaks of yellow fever virus(YFV),chikungunya virus(CHIKV),and Zika virus(ZIKV),leaving behind a substantial portion of the population with complications related to these ***,the world is experiencing a period of intense globalization,which,combined with global warming,directly contributes to wider dissemination of arbovirus vectors across the ***,all continents remain on high alert for potential new ***,this review aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the pathogenesis of the four main arboviruses today(DENV,ZIKV,YFV,and CHIKV)discussing their viral characteristics,immune responses,and mechanisms of viral evasion,as well as important clinical aspects for patient *** includes associated symptoms,laboratory tests,treatments,existing or developing vaccines and the main associated complications,thus integrating a broad historical,scientific and clinical approach.

Several countries around the world have followed the growing number of monkeypox(MPX) cases with concern, as they are still very sensitive to fears of a new tragic pandemic, as was the case with COVID-19. This alarm has been prolonged since May 2022[1,2], when the current outbreaks of the disease were observed in several countries outside the area normally associated with the circulation of the causative virus, monkeypox virus(MPXV).

Crop residues: applications of lignocellulosic biomass in the context of a biorefinery

Interest in lignocellulosic biomass conversion technologies has increased recently because of their potential to reduce the dependency on non-renewable feedstocks. Residues from a variety of crops are the major source of lignocellulose, which is being produced in increasingly large quantities worldwide. The commercial exploitation of crop residues as feedstocks for biorefineries which could be used to produce a variety of goods such as biofuels, biochemicals, bioplastics, and enzymes is an attractive approach not only for adding value to residues but also for providing renewable products required by the expanding bioeconomy market. Moreover, the implementation of biorefineries in different regions has the potential to add value to the specific crop residues produced in the region. In this review, several aspects of crop residue application in biorefineries are discussed, including the role of crop residues in the bioeconomy and circular economy concepts, the main technical aspects of crop residue conversion in biorefineries, the main crop residues generated in different regions of the world and their availability, the potential value-added bioproducts that can be extracted or produced from each crop residue, and the major advantages and challenges associated with crop residue utilization in biorefineries. Despite their potential, most biomass refining technologies are not sufficiently advanced or financially viable. Several technical obstacles, especially with regard to crop residue collection, handling, and pre-treatment, prevent the implementation of biorefineries on a commercial scale. Further research is needed to resolve these scale-up-related challenges. Increased governmental incentives and bioeconomic strategies are expected to boost the biorefinery market and the cost competitiveness of biorefinery products.

The study of corrosion of magnesium and its alloys has emerged a hot topic in the applications of lightweight structural materials. The inherently high electrochemical activity of bare magnesium surfaces still lacks a convincing mechanism to describe the observed experimental characteristics, and it has prompted the development of various types of protective coatings with the aim of slowing metal dissolution. In recent years, new instruments and techniques have been developed to study with spatial resolution the local corrosion processes that occur in metallic materials in general, and for magnesium and its alloys in particular, both for bare surfaces and coated. Scanning microelectrochemical techniques, such as local electrochemical impedance spectroscopy(LEIS), scanning electrochemical microscopy(SECM), scanning vibrating electrode technique(SVET), scanning ion-selective electrode technique(SIET) and scanning Kelvin probe(SKP) can provide information about the local electrochemical activity of metallic surfaces. In the present work, the applications of these techniques in corrosion studies of magnesium and its alloys are reviewed. Assessment of corrosion mechanisms, barrier properties of conventional coatings and active corrosion behavior of self-healing coatings are examined. Limitations and future developments in this area are discussed.

Polymorphisms of the TLR2 and TLR4 genes are associated with risk of gastric cancer in a Brazilian population

AIM： TO investigate toll-like receptor 2 （TLR2） -196 to -274 del, and TLR4 （＋896A/G rs4986790 and ＋1196C/ T rs4986791） polymorphisms at risk of chronic gastritis and gastric cancer in a Brazilian population and associ-ation of gastric lesions with risk factors such as smoking, alcohol intake and Helicobacter pylori infection.METHODS： In this casecontrol study, polymorphism at TLR2 -96 to -174 del was investigated by using the allele-specific polymerase chain reaction （PCR） method, while the PCR-restriction fragment length polymorphism technique was carried out to identify the TLR4 （rs4986790 and rs4986791） genotypes in 607 Brazilian individuals （208 with chronic gastritis-CG, 174 with gastric cancer-GC and 225 controls -C）.RESULTS： The single nucleotide polymorphisms TLR4＋1196ClT was not associated with risk of chronic gastritis or gastric cancer and the homozygous genotypes TLR4＋896GG and TLR4＋1196TF were absent in the studied population. However, the frequency of TLR2 -196 to -174 ins/del ＋ del/del and TLR4＋896AGgenotypes was significantly higher （P 〈 0.01 and P = 0.01, respectively） in the cancer group （33.4% and 11.5%, respectively） than in the control group （16.9% and 4.5%, respectively）. It was also observed that the G-C haplotype of the TLR4＋896A/G＋1196C/T （P = 0.02） and the combination of variant alleles of the TLR21TLR4＋896G （P = 0.02） are associated with susceptibility to gastric cancer. In addition, the multiple logistic regression showed that male gender [odds ratio （OR） = 2.70; 95% CI： 1.66-4.41; P 〈 0.01], alcohol intake （OR = 2.93; 95% CI： 1.76-4.87, P 〈 0.01）, TLR2 -196 to -174 del （OR = 2.64; 95% CI： 1.56-4.44; P 〈 0.01） and TLR4＋896G （OR = 3.19; 95% CI： 1.34- 7.61; P 〈 0.01） polymorphisms were associated with a higher susceptibility to developing this neoplasm.CONCLUSION： Our data indicate that T/R2 -196 to -174 del and TLR4＋896G may increase the risk of gastric cancer in a Brazilian population.

Antifungal activity and antidiarrheal activity via antimotility mechanisms of (-)-fenchone in experimental models

BACKGROUND(-)-Fenchone is a bicyclic monoterpene present in essential oils of plant species,such as Foeniculum vulgare and Peumus boldus,used to treatment of gastrointestinal *** studies report its anti-inflammatory,antioxidant,and antinociceptive *** To investigate antidiarrheal activity related to gastrointestinal motility,intestinal secretion and antimicrobial *** A castor oil-induced diarrhea model was used to evaluate antidiarrheal *** transit and gastric emptying protocols were used to assess a possible antimotility *** receptors,presynaptic α2-adrenergic and tissue adrenergic receptors,KATP channels,nitric oxide were investigated to uncover antimotility mechanisms of action and castor oil-induced enteropooling to elucidate antisecretory *** antimicrobial activity was evaluated in the minimum inhibitory concentration model,the fractional inhibitory concentration index using the(-)-fenchone association method with standard antifungal ***(-)-Fenchone(75,150 and 300 mg/kg)showed antidiarrheal activity,with a significant decrease in the evacuation *** activity is possibly related to a percentage of reduced intestinal transit(75,150 and 300 mg/kg).The antimotility effect of(-)-fenchone decreased in the presence of pilocarpine,yohimbine,propranolol,L-NG-nitroarginine methyl ester or *** the enteropooling model,no reduction in intestinal fluid weight was observed.(-)-Fenchone did not show antibacterial activity;on the other hand,inhibits the growth of strains of fungi with a minimum fungicide concentration of 32μg/***,when it was associated with amphotericin B,no synergism was *** The antidiarrheal effect of(-)-fenchone in this study involves antimotility effect and not involve antisecretory mechanisms.(-)-Fenchone presents antifungal activity;however,it did not show antibacterial activity.

Mini-cutting technique for Khaya anthotheca: selection of suitable IBA concentration and nutrient solution for its vegetative propagation

Khaya anthotheca is a hardwood species from Africa and recently introduced to Brazil. This species yields high-quality wood for diverse applications, but little has been done toward an effective propagation method for large-scale production in nurseries. We evaluated the effects of different concentrations of macro and micronutrients（i.e., 100, 50 and 25% of the concentration of a referenced solution） combined with indole-3-butyric acid（IBA） at 0 and 2 g L-1 on the survival rate of mini-stumps and the survival and adventitious rooting of K. anthotheca mini-cuttings. The mini-stumps were grown from a source of seeds imported from Ghana, West Africa. The ministumps survived at a high rate（97%）. Consistently high shoot yields were obtained from the mini-stumps（average of 1.8 per mini-stump）. High survival percentage of minicuttings and adventitious rooting were observed when solutions with 100 and 50% of the nutrients concentration were combined with 2 g L-1 IBA. Histological sections analyzed through optical microscopy indicated the tissues from mini-cutting stems were juvenile, which might have stimulated adventitious rooting. These results have important implications for further work aimed at establishing propagation strategies for K. anthotheca, which are of prime importance for assisting breeding programs of this species.
