Influence of Phosphoric Acid Etching on the Bond Strength of a Universal Adhesive System to Caries-Affected Dentin

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of acid etching on the bond strength of a universal adhesive system (Single Bond Universal, 3m) to caries-affected dentin. Forty permanent third molars were selected and carious lesions were induced by the microbiological method with?S. mutans?ATCC25175. Teeth were allocated randomly across four experimental designs (n?=?10): PA-I: phosphoric acid etching and application of the adhesive system, followed by immediate microtensile bond strength testing;PA-CC: phosphoric acid etching and application of the adhesive system, followed by microtensile bond strength testing after a 14-day cariogenic challenge;NPA-I: application of the adhesive system without acid etching, followed by immediate bond strength testing and NPA-CC: application of the adhesive system without acid etching followed by bond strength testing after 14-day cariogenic challenge. For microtensile bond strength testing,?a restoration with Charisma composite resin was made and each specimen was sectioned with a cross-sectional area of 1 mm2. Only adhesive and mixed fractures were considered for bond strength calculation. Results were evaluated by the Kruskal-Wallis and Friedman tests. The highest bond strengths were observed in the phosphoric acid etching groups (p??0.05). Cariogenic challenge did not affect bond strength (p?>?0.05). The predominant fracture type was adhesive. We conclude that phosphoric acid increased the bond strength of the Single Bond Universal system to caries-affected dentin, and that cariogenic challenge did not interfere with this bond strength.

Slow Plasma Dynamo Driven by Electric Current Helicity in Non-Compact Riemann Surfaces of Negative Curvature

Boozer addressed the role of magnetic helicity in dynamos [1]. He pointed out that the magnetic helicity conservation implies that the dynamo action is more easily attainable if the electric potential varies over the surface of the dynamo. This provided motivated us to investigate dynamos in Riemannian curved surfaces [2]. Thiffeault and Boozer [3] discussed the onset of dissipation in kinematic dynamos. In this paper, when curvature is constant and negative, a simple laminar dynamo solution is obtained on the flow topology of a Poincare disk, whose Gauss curvature is K = –1. By considering a laminar plasma dynamo [4] the electric current helicity λ ≈ 2.34 m–1 for a Reynolds magnetic number of Rm ≈ 210 and a growth rate of magnetic field |γ| ≈ 0.022 are obtained. Negative constant curvature non-compact H2 manifold, has also been used in onecomponent electron 2D plasma by Fantoni and Tellez [5]. Chicone et al. Advances in Tropical Soil Characterization via Portable X-Ray Fluorescence Spectrometry

Portable X-ray fluorescence(pXRF) spectrometers can be used to determine the elemental composition easily, rapidly, and without using chemical reagents, which is very important for tropical regions due to the lack of detailed soil characterization data. moreover,pXRF data can be used to predict the results of more expensive, time-consuming, and conventional laboratory analyses. This study sought to determine the elemental composition of various soil profiles using pXRF. Two operational modes(Trace mode and General mode) and two scanning time(30 and 60 s) were assessed to determine their effects on the correlation of pXRF dataset with respect to conventional inductively coupled plasma(ICP)-optical emission spectrometry analysis. This relationship has been reported in previous studies, however, few studies were performed on tropical soils, which are unique. Furthermore, such relationships establish the viability of developing prediction models directly from pXRF data. Linear regression was applied to develop calibration models for the prediction of ICP analysis results and exchangeable and available elemental contents based on pXRF data. High coefficients of determination(R^2) were obtained for Ca(0.87), Cu(0.90), Fe(0.95), mn(0.85), Cr(0.95), V(0.72), and Ni(0.90), with adequate validation. Statistically significant results were not found for Al, K, Zn, Ti, and Zr. The models predicting the exchangeable Ca based on the total Ca from p XRF reached an R^2 of up to 0.85. Operational modes influenced the pXRF results. Our results illustrate that pXRF holds great promise for tropical soil characterization and the development of prediction models, justifying the need for larger-scale studies in tropical countries worldwide.

Zero-Order Release Profiles from A multistimuli Responsive Electro-Conductive Hydrogel

Electroconductive hydrogels has been extensively studied in drug delivery systems because they combine the properties of hydogels with the conducting polymers in only one material. In this work, pyrrole was polymerized electrochemically into poly(acrylic acid) hydrogel. This material kept the swelling properties that are characteristic of hydrogels and the electroactivity of the conducting polymers. The hydrogel (with and without the conducting polymer) swelling degree depends on both the ionic strength and pH. As this material is responsive to changes in the electrical potential, pH and ionic strength, the safranin release presented different delivery profiles, in accordance to variations and combinations of these stimuli. The most interesting result was the achievement of the linear safranin release indicating a zero-order kinetics.

Background:Thrombocytopenia is a possible risk factor for bleeding after band ligation of esophageal ***,elevated von Willebrand factor(VWF)in cirrhosis improves platelet function and could decrease this *** objective was to assess platelet function in patients with cirrhosis undergoing esophageal variceal ligation(EVL).methods:The assessment consisted of platelet count,antigen and activity of VWF and VWF-cleaving protease ADAmTS-13 activity,and a platelet adhesion and aggregation test simulating vascular flow in vivo(Impact-RR)prior to ***:Totally 111 patients were divided into three groups according to platelet count:(1)100×109/L(n=26,23.4%).No statistically significant difference was found in the aggregate size of platelets[group 1:41.0(31.8–67.3)μm 2;group 2:47.0(33.8–71.3)μm 2;and group 3:47.0(34.0–66.0)μm 2;P=0.60]and no significant correlation was found between aggregate size and platelet count(Spearman r=0.07;P=0.47).Surface coverage was 4.1%(2.8%–6.7%),8.5%(4.0%–10.0%),and 9.0%(7.1%–12.0%)(Pman r=0.39;PmELD scores[15.0(11.3–20.3)versus 12.0(10.0–15.0);P=0.025],but no difference was demonstrated for platelet function ***:Platelet function is preserved even in the presence of thrombocytopenia,including in the patients with post-EVL bleeding.
