Combining spawn egg counts,individual photo-ID and genetic fingerprinting to estimate the population size and sex ratio of an endangered amphibian

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List,41%of the world’s amphibian species are threatened with extinction,making them more threatened than any other vertebrate group *** the global amphibian crisis,comprehensive understanding of demographics and population trends of declining and threatened species is essential for effective management and conservation *** egg spawns is widely used to assess population abundance in pond breeding ***,it is unknown how such counts translate into robust population size *** monitored the breeding activity of the Natterjack toad(Epidalea calamita),combining egg string counts and individual photo-identification with Capture-Mark-Recapture population size and operational sex ratio *** Natterjack toads were identified by the pattern of natural markings with repeated ID of the same individual confirmed for 10%of the samples using genetic *** identified 647 unique individuals within a closed study population at Caherdaniel,Co *** estimates derived from egg string counts estimated a breeding population of 368 females(95%CI 353–384)and Capture-Mark-Recapture estimated a breeding population of 1698 males(95%CI 1000–2397).The female:male sex ratio was conservatively estimated at 1:5(95%CI 1:3–1:6)where 62%±6%of females were assumed to *** substantially departed from any priori assumption of 1:1 which could have underestimated the breeding population by up to 72%.Where amphibian absolute population size estimation is necessary,methods should include empirical survey data on operational sex ratios and not rely on assumptions or those derived from the literature which may be highly population and/or context-dependent.

Revealing the difference of Stark tuning rate between interface and bulk by surface-enhanced infrared absorption spectroscopy

Revealing the factors that affect the vibrational frequency of Stark probe at interface is a pre-requirement for evaluating the absolute interfacial electric *** using surface-enhanced infrared absorption(SEIRA) spectroscopy,attenuated total reflection (ATR) spectroscopy and molecular dynamics (MD),we reveal the assembled C≡N at gold nanofilm exhibits a reduced Stark tuning rate (STR) referring to the vibrational frequency shift in response to electric field comparing with the bulk which was regulated by the electron transfer between S and *** findings lead to a deeper understanding of the vibrational Stark effect at the interface and provide guidance for improving the interface electric field theory.

Influence of inoculation on cast iron machinability:Case studies

Machinability can sometimes be difficult to predict and be impacted by different characteristics of the ***,a key step in foundry process,is well-known to be a powerful tool to adjust the characteristics of castings in both grey and ductile *** metallurgical cases were investigated to understand different machinability behaviors in correlation to their metallographic ***,two examples taken from grey iron processes are analyzed to illustrate how inoculation is required to adjust characteristics of iron castings,especially the modification of graphite characteristics and the prevention of micro-shrinkage,both parameters are well-known to have an impact on iron *** study also illustrates the importance of the ratio Mn/S to guarantee the presence of manganese sulfides in the matrix,beneficial for iron machinability.

An efficient sensitivity analysis for energy performance of building envelope: A continuous derivative based approach

Within the framework of building energy assessment,this article proposes to use a derivative based sensitivity analysis of heat transfer models in a building ***,global and local,estimators are obtained at low computational cost,to evaluate the influence of the parameters on the model *** of these estimators values allows to reduce the number of model unknown parameters by excluding non-significant parameters.A comparison with variance and regression-based methods is carried out and the results highlight the satisfactory accuracy of the continuous-based ***,for the carried investigations the approach is 100 times faster compared to the variance-based methods.A case study applies the method to a real-world building *** sensitivity of the thermal loads to local or global variations of the wall thermal properties is ***,a case study of wall with window is analyzed.

Determining the influence of the physicochemical parameters of urban soils on As availability using chemometric methods：A preliminary study

An initial exploration was conducted using mathematical and statistical methods to obtain relevant information about the determination of the physicochemical parameters capable of controlling As uptake by ryegrass grown on contaminated *** of As in the soils were from 10 to 47 mg/kg,mainly in the As（V） form（57%–73%）.Concentrations of As in water extracts were very low（61–700 μg/kg）.It was suggested that As（Ⅲ） was mainly in the uncharged species and As（V） in the charged *** methods revealed that the values of the ratio As（Ⅲ）/As（V） depended on the assimilated-phosphorus,the pseudo-total and water-extractable Fe contents and the soil p *** concentrations measured in ryegrass shoots ranged from 119 to 1602 μg/*** linear correlations were obtained between As in ryegrass shoots and water *** transfer coefficient of As correlated well with the ratio assimilated-phosphorus/***（Ⅲ）uptake by the shoot of ryegrass was controlled by the organic matter and Fe-oxide contents.

Chemical Availability of Cd, Pb and Zn in Anthropogenically Polluted Soil: Assessing the Geochemical Reactivity and Oral Bioaccessibility

The most recent in vitro tests used to determine metal bioaccessiblility are generally time-consuming and expensive. This study aimed at determining potential relationships between the concentrations of metals extracted using single-extraction methods and the concentrations of bioaccessible metals assessed by a harmonised in vitro test, the Unified BARGE Method （UBM）. A total number of 27 soil samples were collected from kitchen gardens and lawns with various physicochemical parameters and contamination levels. Significant relationships were obtained between Cd, Pb and Zn extracted in gastric and gastrointestinal phases and using single extractions. The best relationhips were established using acetic and citric acids for Cd, whereas for Pb, citric acid and ethylenedi- aminetetraacetic acid （EDTA） were identified as the best extractants. These relationships were improved by means of a linear multiple regression with a downward stepwise procedure involving agronomic parameters （soil cation exchange capacity and assimilated P）. This method highlighted the fact that the cation exchange capacity and P contents in soils were the two main parameters that controlled the human bioaccessibility of Cd, Pb and Zn in the gastric phase. Besides, the metal concentrations extracted with the acetic and citric acids correlated well with the metal concentrations in the gastric and gastrointestinal phases, suggesting that the bioaceessible metals were mainly in a soluble form, weakly bound to the organic matter and associated with the carbonates and the Fe and Mn oxides/hydroxides in soils.

Chronic infection by either hepatitis B virus(HBV)or hepatitis C virus(HCV)share epidemiological characteristics with risks for development of severe complications such as liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular *** and HCV also share a high genetic variability. Among highly variable regions,viral genes encoding surface proteins(hepatitis B surface antigen,E1/E2 HCV glycoproteins)play key roles in the stimulation of the host-related immune response and viral entry into *** segments of HBV envelope proteins(preS1,"a"determinant)are crucial in the entry process into permissive *** entry is a complex multistep process involving multiple cell cofactors (glycosaminoglycans,low density lipoprotein receptor, SR-B1,CD81,claudin-1,occludin,EGFR,EphA2)in the interaction with HCV E1/E2 envelope *** vitro both viruses can be controlled by antibody-me-diated neutralization targeting viral envelope,also essential in preventing HBV infection in vivo as observed through successful vaccination using HBs *** preventive vaccination and/or therapeutic pressure can influence HBV and HCV *** HBV,the patterns of antiviral drug resistance in chronic hepatitis are complex and the original pol/S gene overlap has to be taken into ***-induced HBV mutations in pol could indeed generate S mutants with subsequent modified antigenicity or increased cancer *** of HBV and HCV envelope proteins combining high exposure to selective pressures and crucial functional roles require investigation in the context of diagnostic,vaccination and treatment *** this editorial a synthesis is performed of HBV and HCV envelope properties at the entry step and as antigenic proteins,and the subsequent clinical impact.
