Risk Factors and Outcome of Preterm Admissions in a Special Care Baby Unit of a Tertiary Hospital in North Central Nigeria

The main objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of preterm births, risk factors and the outcome in a Tertiary Hospital in North Central Nigeria. Setting and Methods: The study was based on the data of records of all preterm admissions over a three-year period at Benue State University Teaching Hospital (BSUTH), Makurdi, Benue State. Results: During this period, a total of 778 neonates were admitted out of which 95 (12.0%) were preterm with gestational ages ranging from 21 - 36 weeks with an average mean gestational age 31.27 weeks (±3.2) and birth weights from 500 - 2490 g with a mean of 1440 g (±0.45). There were 48 males and 47 females (M: F 1.02). 76 ??(80.0%) were delivered by spontaneous vaginal delivery while 19 (20.0%) were delivered by caesarean section. 37 (39.0%) were delivered in BSUTH while 58 (61.0%) were delivered elsewhere and referred or brought into Special Care Baby Unit (SCBU). The duration of hospital stay ranged from 1 - 90 days, with a mean duration of 17 days (±15.2 days). The commonest risk factor for prematurity was premature rupture of membrane followed by multiple pregnancy and lack of Ante natal care (ANC). The commonest morbidity in the patients in the present study was sepsis followed by respiratory problems and jaundice. Of the 95 preterm, 60 (63.2%) were discharged, 27 (28.4%) died, while 8 (8.4%) were discharged against medical advice (DAMA). Conclusion: Prematurity remains a major cause of morbidity and mortality in our SCBU. There is urgent need for the establishment of a neonatal intensive care unit with adequate manpower and appropriate equipment so as to improve the survival rates of this vulnerable group of patients.

Kangaroo Mother Care Practices for Newborns at a Referral Center in Abidjan

Introduction: Kangaroo mother care (KMC) or skin-to-skin contact help to prevent hypothermia, promote breastfeeding and baby-mother attachment. It’s an effective technique management of low-birth-weight (LBW) newborns. The objective of this study was to investigate the efficacy of KMC for LBW newborns admitted to the university health center of Cocody in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire. Population and Methods: This was a retrospective study focusing on a cohort of low birth weight newborns admitted in KMC unit during the period from September 2019 to July 2021 (23 months). We don’t include newborns whose records were incomplete or whose length of stay in kangaroo care had been less than 72 hours. We collected sociodemographic, maternal, obstetric, neonatal characteristics and KMC data (age/weight at inclusion, thermoregulation, feeding, growth evolution and complications). Results: We included 137 newborns with a mean gestational age of 31 SA. Mean birth weight was 1401 g. The majority of mothers worked in the informal sector (45%). The average length of stay in conventional care was 17 days. At inclusion in KMC, the mean weight was 1376 g (minimum 900 g). The most common complications were anemia (16.2%), weight loss (9.5%) and infection (2.9%). Only 13% of newborns received exclusive breast milk. The average daily weight gain was 25 g. Average discharge weight was 1570 g. The hypothermia rate was 17%. We notified 2 deaths (1.5%). Factors influencing regular weight gain of 25 g/day were mother’s marital status and length of stay in conventional care. Conclusion: In developing countries such as Côte d’Ivoire, KMC is a good alternative to conventional care.

On the Lorentz factor of superluminal sources

We investigate the properties of features seen within superluminal sources often referred to as components. Our result indicates a fairly strong correlation of r ～ 0.5 for quasars, r ～ 0.4 for galaxies and r ～ 0.7 for BL Lac objects in our sam- ple between component sizes and distances from the stationary core. The assumption of free adiabatic expanding plasma enables us to constrain the Lorentz factor for su- perluminal sources. Our estimated Lorentz factor of y ～ 9-13 for quasars, 7 ～ 7-11 for galaxies and y～ 4 - 9 for BL Lac objects indicates that BL Lacs have the lowest range of Lorentz factors.

The assessment of heavy metal pollution in river sands of Jalingo,Nigeria using magnetic proxy parameters,pollution,and ecotoxicological indices

Investigation of the relation between space-weather parameters and Forbush decreases automatically selected from Moscow and Apatity cosmic ray stations during solar cycle 23

We present the results of an investigation of the relation between space-weather parameters and cosmic ray(CR)intensity modulation using algorithm-selected Forbush decreases(FDs)from Moscow(MOSC)and Apatity(APTY)neutron monitor(NM)stations during solar cycle *** FD location program detected 408 and 383 FDs from MOSC and APTY NM stations respectively.A coincident computer code employed in this work detected 229 FDs that were observed at the same Universal Time(UT)at the two *** of the 229 simultaneous FDs,we formed a subset of 139 large FDs(%)≤-4 at the MOSC *** performed a two-dimensional regression analysis between the FD magnitudes and the space-weather data on the two *** find that there were significant space-weather disturbances at the time of the CR flux *** correlation between the space-weather parameters and decreases in galactic cosmic ray(GCR)intensity at the two NM stations is statistically *** implications of the present space-weather data on CR intensity depressions are highlighted.

Application of Ordinary Kriging in Mapping Soil Organic Carbon in Zambia

The quantification of the pattern and spatial distribution of soil organic carbon （SOC） is fundamental to understand many ecosystem processes. This study aimed to apply ordinary kriging （OK） to model the spatial distribution of SOC in a selected part of Zambia. A total of 100 soil samples were collected from the study area and analyzed for SOC by determining soil oxidizable carbon using the Walkley-Black method. An automated fitting procedure was followed when modeling the spatial structure of the SOC data with the exponential semivariogram. The results indicated that the short range spatial dependence of SOC was strong with a nugget close to zero. The spatial autocorrelation was high to medium with a nugget to sill ratio of 0.25. The root mean square error of the predictions was 0.64, which represented 58.18% of the mean observed data for SOC. It can be concluded that the generated map could serve as a proxy for SOC in the region where evidence of spatial structure and quantitative estimates of uncertainty are reported. Therefore, the maps produced can be used as guides for various uses including optimization of soil sarapling.

Testing the Empirical Relationship between Forbush Decreases and Cosmic Ray Diurnal Anisotropy
