Sexual Orientation and Associated Factors among Adolescents in Cameroonian Cities—Factors Associated with Sexual Orientation in Adolescents

Introduction: Over time, new sexual practices other than the common ones are frequently described. This work aimed to determine the sexual orientation and its associated factors among adolescents attending school in two big cities in Cameroon. Methodology: A cross-sectional study with prospective data collection took place from November 2021 to April 2022 in eight secondary schools (four in Yaoundé and four in Douala). We conducted non-probability, consecutive sampling on school-going, sexually active adolescents between the ages of 14 and 19 years. A self-administered questionnaire to students was used to study their sexual orientations and practices. Univariate and multivariate analyses made it possible to find the associated factors using the chi-square test. Results: We included 1274 adolescents with an average age of 18 years;majority were boys (54.8%) for a sex ratio of 1.21. Most (49.7%) were from two-parent families. Cisgender was the most common self-gender identity (89.6%). The main sexual orientation was heterosexuality (82.3%), followed by bisexuality (9.7%) and homosexuality (8%). The average age at first sexual intercourse (coitarche) was 15 years and the coitarche was consenting in 84.1%. Sexual practices included: kissing (94.7%), fondling (93.4%), vaginal penetration (80.6%), oral sex (40.4%), masturbation (22.8%), fisting (18.4%), and anal penetrations (17.5%). The majority of sexual intercourse acts (55.8%) took place without protection;24.6% of adolescents practiced them with a person of the same sex and 18.4% with several others simultaneously. The factors associated with heterosexuality were age ≤17 years (aOR: 2.44 [1.36 - 4.40];p = 0.003), self-identification opposite to primary sexual characteristics (aOR: 12.05 [5.13 - 28.29];p 0.001), absence of consent during the first coitus (aOR: 7.09 [3.61 - 13.93];p 0.001) and a history of sexual intercourse with a person of the same sex (aOR: 94.17 [43.36 - 183.39];p 0.001). COVID-19 in Blood Donors at Laquintinie Hospital in Douala during the Third Wave: A Cross Sectional Study

This study was conducted at Laquintinie Hospital during the period between September 2021 and April 2022. The total number of cases who came to donate blood was 150 donors aged 18 to 60 years;48 were excluded for several reasons. Several examinations were conducted for participants that were accepted for a study (n = 102 [2 (2.0%) were women and 100 (98.0%) men]), the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 in nasopharyngeal samples was 11.8%. The mean CD4 count was 763.23 ± 194.61 cells/μl with endpoints [250 - 1400] cells/μl. IgG antibodies were present in 62.75% of cases. No statistically significant relation was found between SARS-CoV-2 carriage and IgG level or CD4 level (p = 0.850 & 0.056). Concerning the blood group, 57.3% (58) of the donors were of blood group O Rhesus positive;19.4% (20) of blood type A Rhesus positive;and 2.9% were of blood group A Rhesus negative. Pupils and students represented 35.3% of our population, followed by employees at 25.5%. The SARS-CoV-2 positivity rate was 11.8% (n = 12). The transfusion transmitted infections (TTI) rate was 12.8% with 1.2% (1) positive HIV serologies, 5.8% (6) positive for HBsAg, 3.9% (4) for HCVAb, and 1.9% (2) positive TPA.

Dialogue between estrogen receptor and e2F signaling pathways: The transcriptional coregulator RIP140 at the crossroads

estrogen receptors and e2F transcription factors are the key players of two nuclear signaling pathways which exert a major role in oncogenesis, particularly in the mammary gland. Different levels of dialogue between these two pathways have been deciphered and deregulation of the e2F pathway has been shown to impact the response of breast cancer cells to endocrine therapies. The present review focuses on the transcriptional coregulator RIP140/NRIP1 which is involved in several regulatory feed-back loops and inhibitory cross-talks between different nuclear signaling pathways. RIP140 regulates the transactivation potential of estrogen receptors and e2Fs and is also a direct transcriptional target of these transcription factors. Published data highlight the complex regulation of RIP140 expression at the transcriptional level and its potential role in transcription cross-talks. Indeed, a subtle regulation of RIP140 expression levels has important consequences on other transcription networks targeted by this coregulator. Another level of regulation implies titration mechanisms by which activation of a pathway leads to sequestration of the RIP140 protein and thus impinges other gene regulatory circuitries. Altogether, RIP140 occupies a place of choice in the dialogue between nuclear receptors and e2Fs, which could be highly relevant in various human pathologies such as cancer or metabolic diseases.

Silicon(Si)photonics has recently emerged as a key enabling technology in many application fields thanks to the mature Si process technology,the large silicon wafer size,and promising Si optical *** monolithic integration by direct epitaxy of III-V lasers and Si photonic devices on the same Si substrate has been considered for decades as the main obstacle to the realization of dense photonics *** considerable progress in the last decade,only discrete III-V lasers grown on bare Si wafers have been reported,whatever the wavelength and laser *** we demonstrate the first semiconductor laser grown on a patterned Si photonics platform with light coupled into a waveguide.A mid-IR GaSb-based diode laser was directly grown on a pre-patterned Si photonics wafer equipped with SiN waveguides clad by SiO_(2).Growth and device fabrication challenges,arising from the template architecture,were overcome to demonstrate more than 10 mw outpower of emitted light in continuous wave operation at room *** addition,around 10%of the light was coupled into the SiN waveguides,in good agreement with theoretical calculations for this butt-coupling *** work lft an important building block and it paves the way for future low-cost,large-scale,fully integrated photonic chips.

Training and evaluation of a knowledge-based model for automated treatment planning of multiple brain metastases

Aim: Volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) has been utilized to plan and treat multiple cranial metastases using a single isocenter due to its ability to provide steep dose gradients around targets as well as low doses to critical structures. VMAT treatment is delivered in a much shorter time compared to using a single isocenter for the treatment of each lesion. However, there is a need to develop methods to reduce the treatment planning time for these cases while also standardizing the plan quality. In this work we demonstrate the use of RapidPlan, which is knowledge-based treatment (KBP) planning software to plan multiple cranial SRS cases. Methods: The 66 patient plans with 125 lesions (range 1-4, median 1) were used to train a model. In addition, the model was validated using 10 cases that were previously treated and chosen randomly. The clinical plans were compared to plans generated by RapidPlan for target coverage and critical organ dose. Results: Coverage to the target volume, gradient index, conformity index and minimum dose to the target showed no significant difference between the original clinical plan vs. the plan generated by KBP. A comparison of doses to the critical organs namely the brainstem, brain, chiasm, eyes, optic nerves and lenses showed no significant difference. Target dose homogeneity was slightly better with the clinical plan, however this difference was also statistically insignificant. ;Conclusion: This work demonstrates that KBP can be trained and efficiently utilized to help not only speed up the planning process but also help standardize the treatment plan quality.

An Atypical Ovarian and Peritoneal Pelvic Tuberculosis Complicated by Toxidermia

Background: Ovarian tuberculosis is a rare form of tuberculosis. Its clinical presentation mimics an ovarian tumor, leading to misdiagnosis. Proper treatment with anti-tuberculosis drugs can lead to a cure for the disease but can sometimes cause adverse effects that compromise therapeutic management. Observation: We report a 71-year-old female Senegalese patient who presented with a chronic abdominopelvic mass with an elevated Cancer Antigen 125 (CA125) level, raising the suspicion of an ovarian tumor. She underwent an exploratory laparotomy and the anatomopathological study confirmed the diagnosis of ovarian and peritoneal tuberculosis. After starting treatment with anti-tuberculosis drugs, she developed toxidermia in the form of generalized urticaria. Discontinuation of the four-drug therapy and separate reintroduction of anti-tuberculosis drugs led to the incrimination of rifampicin. Progress was then favorable on Isoniazid (H) pyrazinamide (Z) and ethambutol (e). Conclusion: Ovarian tuberculosis should be suspected in the presence of an abdominopelvic mass in a woman living in an endemic area. The occurrence of adverse reactions to anti-tuberculosis treatment is not uncommon, hence the importance of regular monitoring.

以辣椒品种“奥黛丽”为试材,采用基质盆栽的方式,设置4个不同供钙水平(1.5、1.0、0.5、0 mmol·L^(-1)Ca)和2个外源硅肥水平(1.5、0 mmol·L^(-1)Si),二者完全随机组合,共8个处理,研究了不同供Ca水平下施Si对辣椒生长及果实品质的影响,以期为设施辣椒优质高效肥料配施提供参考依据。结果表明:随供Ca水平的降低,辣椒幼苗的株高、茎粗与生物量积累逐渐下降,施加外源Si均不同程度促进了各水平下幼苗的生长;低Ca水平下,幼苗叶片的叶绿素含量、净光合速率、蒸腾速率、胞间CO_(2)浓度及气孔导度均不同程度下降,施Si显著缓解了低Ca水平对辣椒光合作用的抑制;随着供Ca水平的降低,辣椒的果实产量显著降低8.15%~73.23%(P<0.05),施Si则不同程度缓解了低Ca对辣椒产量的抑制;随供Ca水平的降低,辣椒果实的营养物质含量逐渐下降,施Si则显著改善了低Ca下辣椒的果实品质。因此,供Ca水平的降低会显著抑制辣椒生长发育及光合作用,降低果实的品质及产量,施加外源Si均可不同程度缓解低Ca胁迫对辣椒的伤害。
