CHARGE syndrome (Coloboma of the eye, Heart defects, Atresia of the choanae, Retardation of growth and/or development, Genital and/or urinary abnormalities, and Ear abnormalities) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by a specific and a recognizable pattern of anomalies. De novo mutations in the CHD7 gene are the major cause of CHARGE syndrome. Here, we present a family who sought genetic counseling because of a newborn with dysmorphic features suggesting CHARGE syndrome. The baby died three months later. Afterwards, a molecular genetic testing for sequence analysis of the CHD7 coding region was performed with DNA extracted from umbilical cord blood stem cells confirming the diagnosis of CHARGE syndrome. Although the diagnosis is first suspected clinically, in the newborn case presented here, we illustrate the importance of the molecular testing to confirm the diagnosis, and to enable precise genetic counseling. Also, even though cord blood has been stored in private banks for more than ten years, there is as yet no routine clinical application of autologous (self-donation) hematopoietic stem cells from cord blood. Now, we illustrate for the first time the usefulness of umbilical cord blood stem cells for diagnosis and genetic counseling in a case that involve a dead propositus.

Patella Alta and Trochlea Dysplasia Is Associated with Abnormal Type Ⅱ Collagen and Matrix Accumulation in Chondrocytes

The purpose of this study was to perform morphological and molecular analyses of articular cartilage from a 14-year-old boy with unusual cartilage lesions, patella alta and trochlea dysplasia in both knee joints and clinically examine two family members (sister, mother), also affected in their knee joints. Biopsies from the boy’s patella were used for: histological examination, Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) and DNA sequencing of the COL2A1 gene including Multiplex Ligation-dependent Probe Amplification (MLPA), for detection of DNA deletions and duplications. Clinical and radiological examination showed patella alta and trochlea dysplasia for the brother (type D), sister (type A) and mother (type A) with Insall-Salvati ratios of 1.50, 1.46 and 1.3. Light Microscopy (LM) of biopsies from the patient showed rhomboid chondrocytes in lacuna with deposition of protein aggregates in the ECM. TEM revealed abnormal type II collagen fibrils in aggregates and chondrocytes with abnormal matrix accumulation in rough Endoplasmic Reticulum (rER). Immunostaining showed that type II collagen was deposited intracellularly and in protein aggregates, together with type I collagen, indicating alterations in chondrocyte function and turnover of these molecules. DNA sequencing of 54 exons including extended DNA analysis with MLPA was non-conclusive. Conclusions: We suggest that patella alta and trochlea dysplasia for this patient is associated with collagen accumulation in chondrocytes, abnormal type II collagen heterofibrils in the ECM, cell death and cartilage with subnormal strength and increased risk of premature patellofemoral arthritis. A family with these disorders suggests that phenotype might be transmitted as an autosomal dominant trait.

This study investigates the differences in pragmatic competence between Hong Kong and Chinese mainland university *** included 19 native speakers of English,115 Chinese mainland students,divided into those who had spent time abroad in an English-speaking country(CM A)and those who had not(CM NA),and 97 Hong Kong students,divided into those from an English-medium secondary school(Hong Kong EMI)and those from a Chinese-medium school(Hong Kong CMI).Linguistic proficiency was measured by a C-test,and pragmatic competence by a Metapragmatic Knowledge Test,an Irony Test and a Monologic Role *** scores were compared using ANCOVAs to control for differences in *** results point to a continuum of pragmatic competence—EMI>CMI>CM A>CM NA—reflecting the groups’access to English in real-life *** differences between the Hong Kong groups and the Chinese mainland groups were clearest in those tests measuring processing capacity(i.e.,Irony Response Time and the Monologic Role Play).CM A,but not CM NA,performed as well as the Hong Kong groups on measures of metapragmatic *** results are discussed in terms of Bialystok’s(1993)distinction between analyzed representation and control of processing.

This article is about the movies from Chinese mainland under the production category of minority cinema （shaoshu minzu dianying）, between the years 1940 and 1963. It argues that the taxonomic effort of grouping different non-Hart ethnicities together into a single category of minority cinema is a sociopolitical attempt to construct, maintain and control the definition of ethnic minorities. It calls into question not what is within the film, but the classificatory practices outside of the film collectively engaged by the government, the film industry, the critics and the mass audience. Moving away from the methods of examining the representation and generic conventions of the cinema other scholarship has employed, this article emphasizes the classification system used during the time of the cinema. By comparing it with a similar classificatory problem in Western national history, using an epistemological perspective, this article criticizes the negative impact inevitably left in rhetorically driven classification systems.

Simulation is a modem educational tool that has recently gained in the field of medical education. The use of simulation continues to expand, and studies evaluating the effectiveness of simulation-based medical education are ongoing. The history of medical education and adult educational theory are reviewed, and the details of effective simulation techniques are described. Finally, outcomes of simulation-based medical education are summarized.

Our knowledge about the interaction between human activities and the environment in the middle-late Holocene remains *** C1 in Lake Chaohu from the middle and lower reaches of Yangtze River (MLYR),eastern China,provides an opportunity to investigate vegetation and climate changes,human activities,and East Asian summer monsoon(EASM) evolution since 5100 *** *** variables are assessed based on radiocarbon dating,pollen and charcoal records,and magnetic susceptibility (χ_(lf)),median grain size and *** reveal a hiatus in sedimentation between 2080 and 730 *** BP in the western part of Lake Chaohu,which is common in most lakes in the *** and deciduous broadleaved mixed forest retreated gradually after 3650 *** BP,and was replaced by secondary Pinus forest after at least 730 *** *** agricultural activities and vegetation clearance are first detected at 2520 *** *** settlements expanded from the lake front wetlands (during the period 2520–2080 *** BP) to remote high-altitude areas(2080–400 *** BP),and then returned to the lake front to reclaim the wetlands and lake (after 400 *** BP).A gradual trend of recessional EASM strength from 4300 *** BP and centennial-scale variations of EASM during the period5100–3650 *** BP are *** reduction of summer insolation,southward shift of the ITCZ,and El Ni?o Southern Oscillation may control the intensity of EASM and climate on a large regional scale.

Using Girsanov transformation,we derive a new link from stochastic differential equations of Markovian type to nonlinear parabolic equations of Burgers-KPZ type,in such a manner that the obtained BurgersKPZ equation characterizes the path-independence property of the density process of Girsanov transformation for the stochastic differential *** assertion also holds for SDEs on a connected differential manifold.

Director Neil Jordan＇s 2013 film Byzantium is a vampire narrative with a female empowerment theme that attains the status of Irish neomyth. Although much of the story takes place in England, the vampires originate in southwest Ireland, recognizable in filming locations and from historical allusions, Catholic religious references, Gaelic speech acts, traditional Irish songs, imagery from Celtic mythology, and a title that invokes a relevant Yeats poem with the title ＂Byzantium.＂ Such references to Irish culture elevate the supernatural mother-daughter protagonists to modem mythic status in their centuries-long conflict with an Ireland-based, patriarchal vampire Brotherhood.

The effects of adrenalectomy and corticosterone supplementation on the neurotoxicity of trimethyltin (TMT) were tested. CD-1 mice with or without adrenalectomy were injected with TMT at a dose of 3.0mg/kg body wt. At 48h post-TMT administration, the animals were killed for pathological examination. It was found that the adrenalectomized animals developed even more severe lesions in the hippocampal formation (fascia dentata granule cells) than the intact animals. When animals were given a supplement of corticosterone pellets at doses of 0.15, 1.5, and 7.5mg, there was a reduction of lesion development. Total alleviation of pathology was seen at the two higher doses of supplementation. Our present investigation strongly indicates that there may be a close and important interrelationship between TMT-induced neurotoxicity and adrenal function. 1989 Academic Press, Inc.

The Americans with Disabilities Act prohibits discrimination against individuals with disabilities in all areas of public life. Agencies work diligently to meet the law’s demands with inclusionary practices, including public accommodations, engaging students in regular classes, offering regular activities through state and local government services. However, the practices though well-meaning often actually exclude impaired people from play. Thus, the purpose of this philosophical research paper is to educate physical activity professionals on the importance of play for people with impairments and provide skills and strategies for inclusive behavior. These skills and strategies will help professionals foster an inclusive environment that the laws expect them to uphold. The skills include but are not limited to： perspective change, assessing students’ physical capabilities, modifying activities to include all participants’ capabilities, engaging all students in inclusivity and fostering play enjoyment with participants of varying abilities, teaching con？dence building skills, and educating students who do not want to be inclusive on the importance of play for everyone. Every professional should be successful at implementing an inclusive environment.
