Objective： This study was originally designed to observe the effects of propranolol （a β-blocker） and Zhigancao Decoction （炙甘草汤 ZGCD） on bone mass in ovariectomized rats. Methods： Thirty-eight female Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into four groups initially, a sham-operated group （Sham, n=7）, a model ovariectomized （OVX） group （Model, n=7）, a propranolol group （Pro, n=12） and a ZGCD group （ZGCD, n=12）. After 15 weeks of treatment, the expected effects were not found. In order to verify the situations of the experiment, we modified the study by administering calcitonin to a subgroup of the tested Pro and ZGCD rats. Results： The Pro and ZGCD treatments showed decreased heart rate and plasma norepinephrine level, but neither an increased bone mass nor any bone metabolism differences from the model rats were found. However, the OVX-induced bone loss was prevented by the sequent treatment of calcitonin. Conclusions： The results provide no evidence that the β-blocker propranolol may stimulate bone formation, and do not iustify its use for clinical treatment of osteoporosis.

A Switching Controller System for a Wheeled Mobile Robot

A wheeled mobile mechanism with a passive and/or active linkage mechanism for rough terrain environment is developed and evaluated. The wheeled mobile mechanism which has high mobility in rough terrain needs sophisticated system to adapt various environments. We focus on the development of a switching controller system for wheeled mobile robots in rough terrain. This system consists of two sub-systems： an environment recognition system using link angles and an adaptive control system. In the environment recognition system, we introduce a Self-Organizing Map （SOM） for clustering link angles. In the adaptive controllers, we introduce neural networks to calculate the inverse model of the wheeled mobile robot. The environment recognition system can recognize the environment in which the robot travels, and the adjustable controllers are tuned by experimental results for each environment. The dual sub-system switching controller system is experimentally evaluated. The system recognizes its environment and adapts by switching the adjustable controllers. This system demonstrates superior performance to a well-tuned single PID controller.

＜正＞This paper addresses the dynamic location management for personal communication sen’ice （PCS） networks with popular hexagonal celluar architectures. We first introduce a coordinate system for the hexagonal celluar architectures. Then, we develop an all-direction mobility model based on the coordinate system for the hexagonal cellular architecture to cope with the mobility patterns of mobile terminals （MTs）. By using the proposed model, the shape and size of the local area in the dynamic location update scheme are determined optimally.

In recent years, power generation using renewable energy sources has been increasing as a solution to the global warning problem. Wind power generation can generate electricity day and night, and it is relatively more efficient among the renewable energy sources. The penetration level of variable-speed wind turbines continues to increase. The interconnected wind turbines, however, have no inertia and no synchronous power. Such devices can have a serious impact on the transient stability of the power grid system. One solution to stabilize such grid with renewable energy sources is to provide emulated inertia and synchronizing power. We have proposed an optimal design method of current control for virtual synchronous generators. This paper proposes an optimal control method that can follow the virtual generator model under constrains. As a result, it is shown that the proposed system can suppress the peak of the output of semiconductor device under instantaneous output voltage drop.

This report describes an extremely rare adult case of an omphalomesenteric cyst resected by laparoscopicassisted surgery. A 29-years-old Japanese man was referred and admitted to Kyushu University Hospital because of an abdominal mass and an elevated serum CEA （carcinoembryonic antigen） level （21.3 ng/mL） in August 2001. Abdominal CT and US demonstrated a cystic mass with septum and calcification. Laparoscopy showed a large mass to be attached to his abdominal wall, measuring 110 mm × 70 mm× 50 mm and filled with mucus. The mass was resected by laparoscopicassisted surgery. The histological findings of its wall showed fibromuscular tissue, adipose tissue, calcification, and an intestinal structure. It was finally diagnosed to be an omphalomesenteric cyst.

This study investigated the change in denitrification rate in muddy tidal flats sediment by chemical and biological remediation. Column experiments were conducted to determine the dependence of denitrification rate on the redox potential. Filtered seawater was fed continuously to the pipe filled with sediment from the muddy tidal flats. An increase in the redox potential from -198 mV to 21 mV with bioturbation led to increases in the denitrification rate from 24.2 mg/m2/day to 29.8 mg/m2/day. The increase in denitrification was explained by the acceleration of mass transfer in the sediment. Redox-potential increased from -400 mV to -200 mV by the addition of 10 g calcium nitrate, acid volatile sulfide was below the detection limit to 20 cm depth, and denitrification rate was increased from 21.3 mg/m2/day to 36.4 mg/m2/day. It is considered that the increased nitrogen concentration led to an increase in microbial activity.

A Case of Low-Grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasm of Its Difficultly to Distinguish from a Right Ovarian Tumor Due to Postmenopause

We here present a rare case of appendiceal tumor mimicking ovarian tumor in menopause woman. The patient was a 56-year-old woman, G1P1, who presented to our hospital with a right adnexal cyst diagnosed at another hospital. Transvaginal echocardiography showed a cyst in the right adnexal region, and pelvic contrast-enhanced MRI revealed a small cyst in the same region. The left ovary was atrophic and identifiable. It was unclear whether the cyst was contiguous with the gastrointestinal tract. Blood tests showed no elevation of tumor markers. We considered its possibility of a gastrointestinal origin, but since right normal ovary was not found, we thought the tumor was of ovarian origin and decided on a laparoscopic resection of the right adnexa. Intraoperatively, we observed atrophied bilateral normal ovaries, and the pelvic tumor was contiguous to the appendix. Surgeons performed a laparoscopic appendectomy after consultation with us. After resection we searched the abdominal and pelvic cavities, but found no obvious disseminated lesions. The histological diagnosis was low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN), a rare benign tumor of the appendix. Appendiceal tumors can be difficult to differentiate from right ovarian tumors due to their close anatomic location in the pelvis. It is possible to determine whether the tumor is of ovarian or appendiceal origin by identifying normal ovaries and the location of the feeding vessels into the tumors. In our case, there were no lesions other than the appendix, but LAMN can metastasize to the ovary, cause pseudomyoxoma peritonei, or be an overlapping tumor with an ovarian tumor. If an appendiceal tumor is diagnosed after surgery for ovarian tumor, the intra-abdominal cavity should be searched for metastasis or dissemination, and a thorough search for ovarian lesions should be performed with the possibility of an overlapping tumor in mind.

Tumor lysis syndrome (TLS), hyperleukocytosis, and disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) are representative oncological emergencies that overlap mutually at the beginning of therapy for aggressive leukemia. Lately recombinant urate oxidase (rUO) enables to control uric acid level and its crystallization, the most frequent risk factor for clinical TLS;therefore, hyperphosphatemia appears to be the main risk in the rUO era. We here report an infantile leukemia patient who developed severe hyperphosphatemia, resulting in acute renal failure and ischemic encephalopathy. A 9-month-old female baby was adynamic with a bulging anterior fontanel, and was diagnosed as infantile acute lymphoblastic leukemia with a mixed lineage leukemia gene rearrangement. A laboratory examination revealed leukocytosis, bicytopenia, hyperuricemia, a prolonged prothrombin time, activated partial thromboplastin time, and elevated lactate dehydrogenase level. Soon after a reduced dose of prednisolone was administered, she developed hypoxia caused by systemic inflammatory response syndrome and heart failure. Her white blood cell count decreased sharply, leading to acute renal failure due to hyperphosphatemia, which required continuous hemodiafiltration for 48 hours. Although renal function subsequently recovered, severe ischemic encephalopathy remained. She achieved morphological remission once, however, relapsed and passed away soon after. We have to pay attention to the progression of hyperphosphatemia, hyperkakemia and DIC, although hyperuricemia was controlled using rUO. Changes in electrolyte levels must be continuously monitored, and TLS, DIC and/or hyperleukocytosis should be promptly managed especially in patients who are sensitive to therapy.

Concurrence of composite adrenal pheochromocytoma-ganglioneuroma and renal pelvic cancer: A case report

Embryologically, chromaffin cells of the pheo-chromocytoma and ganglion cells of the ganglioneuroma are both derived from neural crest cells. Composite pheochromocytoma-ganglioneuroma (Pheo-GN) in a single adrenal gland is very rare. A case report of a patient with composite Pheo-GN of the adrenal gland and renal pelvic cancer is presented. Laparoscopic left adrenalectomy, nephroureterectomy and para-aortic lymphadenectomy were performed. This represents the first report of simultaneous surgical treatment for composite Pheo-GN and renal pelvic cancer.

Constructing Genetic Linkage Maps Using the Whole Genome Sequence of Pacific Bluefin Tuna (Thunnus orientalis) and a Comparison of Chromosome Structure among Teleost Species

Pacific bluefin tuna (Thunnus orientalis) is one of the most economically important species in the Percomorpha group of teleost fishes. Their migrations are extensive and depend upon continuous swimming at a high rate of speed throughout their life. The draft genome sequence of this species has been reported but remains highly fragmented. We constructed a Pacific bluefin tuna genetic linkage map using microsatellite markers developed on each of the scaffolds from the draft genome sequence to link these genome fragments and understand the genomic structure of species in Percomorpha. Of the 606 polymerase chain reaction microsatellite primer pairs tested, 473 were polymorphic in the mapping populations for the linkage analysis. We constructed sex-specific maps for 24 linkage groups consisting of 470 markers, which allowed us to place scaffolds that cumulatively represented 20.8% (153.8 Mb) of the sequenced genome onto the linkage groups. The distribution of orthologous genes on the chromosomes of tuna and four other teleost fish species suggested that the constitution of tuna chromosomes is closest to that of medaka. Both species have the 24 chromosomes of the ancestral teleost, including several chromosomal inversions. The integrated map developed in this study will be useful to construct a complete physical map to conduct comparative teleost genomics and genetic studies on economically useful traits in Pacific bluefin tuna.
