A 67-year-old man visited our hospital with a history of continuous hematochezia leading to hemorrhagic *** abdominal computed tomography scan re-vealed a large mass in the ascending colon invading the duodenum and pancreatic head as well as extra-vasation of blood from the gastroduodenal artery(GDA) into the *** revealed an irregular ulcerative lesion and stenosis in the ascending ***,right hemicolectomy combined with pylorus-preser ving pancreaticoduodenectomy was ***,the tumor was classified as a moderately differentiated ***,cancer cells were mainly located in the colon but had also invaded the duode-num and pancreas and involved the ***,the tumor cells were positive for cytokeratin(CK)20 and carcinoembryonic antigen(CEA)but not forCK7 and carbohydrate antigen(CA)*** patient died 23 d after the surgery because he had another episode of arterial bleeding from the anastomosis *** En bloc resection of the tumor with pancreatico duodenectomy and colectomy performed for locally advanced colon cancer can ensure long-term survival,patients undergoing these procedures should be carefully monitored,particularly when the tumor involves the main artery.

Ultrafiltration recovery of alginate: Membrane fouling mitigation by multivalent metal ions and properties of recycled materials

Recovery of alginate extracted from aerobic granular sludge(AGS)has given rise to a novel research ***,these extracted alginate solutions have a water content of nearly 100%.Alternately,ultrafiltration(UF)is generally used for concentration of ***,the introduction of multivalent metal ions into alginate may provide a promising method for the development of novel *** this study,membrane fouling mitigation by multivalent metal ions,both individually and in combination,and properties of recycled materials were investigated for UF recovery of sodium alginate(SA).The filtration resistance showed a significantly negative correlation with the concentration of metal ions,arranged in the order of Mg^2+Fe^3++Ca^2+>Ca^2+>Mg^2+.Three mechanisms were proposed in the presence of Fe^3+,such as the decrease of SA concentration,change in p H,and production of hydroxide iron colloids from *** properties of recycled materials(filter cake)were investigated via optical microscope observation,dynamic light scattering,Fourier transform infrared,X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS),and scanning electron *** results provide further insight into UF recoveries of alginate extracted from AGS.

Heat coma as an indicator of resistance to environmental stress and its relationship to ocean dynamics in the sea skaters, Halobates （Heteroptera： Gerridae）

The tolerance to temperature increase was tested for Halobates individuals collected during two cruises in the western tropical Pacific Ocean （MR-06-05-Leg 3, December 21, 2006-January 12, 2007, 0°N-8°N; KH-06-02-Leg 5, August 18-31, 2006, 12°N-17°N）. High temperature coma experiments were conducted on adults and 5th instar larvae. On average, H. sericeus （distributed in the wide latitude zone of 5°N-40°N）, H. germanus （distributed in the moderate latitude zone of 0°N-35°N） and H. micans （distributed mainly in the lower latitudes around the equator） were on average paralyzed at 35.6℃（SD： 0.89）, 32.9℃ （SD： 2.17） and 31.6℃ （SD： 2.60）, respectively （P = 0.035）. According to the current dynamics during the cruise, the colony ofH. sericeus at one station （5°N 137°E） may have been transferred from the northern area of 14°N by three currents （North Equatorial Current, Mindanao Current and North Equatorial Counter Current） to the area of 5°N 138°E. Extremely high heat resistance was shown by the adults of H. germanus in the sea area around the equator. Dynamic current and air movements in this area around the equator, that is a ＂warm seawater pool＂, could be hypothesized to be related to the high resistance to heat shown in this study.

Direct comparison of hydraulic tortuosity and electric tortuosity based on finite element analysis

Tortuosity is one of the key parameters to characterize the transport properties of porous media. There are many models for tortuosity estimation based on some definitions： geometric, hydraulic, electric, and diffusive definitions, However, relationships among those tortuosities remain unclear due to the lack of di- rect comparison on the same porous media. Here we focus on hydraulic and electric tortuosities and have conducted a series of finite element simulations with the Navier-Stokes equation and the equation for electric current to directly compare tortuosities. The results revealed that：（1） on average, hydraulic tortu- osity is 15% greater than that of the electric one; （2） the proposed model based on the van Genuchten-type function successfully approximates both hydraulic and electric tortuosities; （3） tortuosities obtained from the nnrnus media hacked with circular narticles and square particles show quantitatively similar trends.

Surgical outcome comparisons of multifocal IOLs of Lentis Comfort LS-313 MF15 and Tecnis Eyhance DIB00V

AIM:To compare the surgical outcomes of a multifocal intraocular lens(IOL;Lentis Comfort LS-313 MF15)with those of an enhanced monofocal IOL(Tecnis Eyhance DIB00V).METHODS:This retrospective study included patients who underwent cataract surgery with LS-313 MF15 or Eyhance IOL *** regarding patient demographics,surgical records,and ophthalmic examination before the cataract surgery and one and three months postoperatively were *** acuities,refractive values,defocus curves,contrast sensitivities and subjective symptoms were ***:Among the 71 eyes(47 patients)included in this study,32 eyes(20 patients)underwent LS-313 MF15 IOL implantation,and 39 eyes(27 patients)underwent Eyhance IOL *** significant differences were observed in age,axial length,or refractive error between the two groups ***,the distancecorrected and uncorrected distance visual acuities one month postoperatively did not differ between the groups,and both groups had sufficient visual acuities at the distances of 5,1 m,70,50,and 30 *** ophthalmic data,including subjective symptoms based on the 14-item Visual Function Index Questionnaire,monocular defocus curves,contrast sensitivities,and halo and glare,did not differ between the groups three months ***,both groups had good *** spherical equivalent one month postoperatively was significantly myopic in the LS-313 MF15 group compared with that in the Eyhance group(P=0.033);however,this difference was not observed three months postoperatively(P=0.471).CONCLUSION:Comparison of the surgical outcomes of LS-313 MF15 with those of Eyhance with different optical properties reveal that both IOLs show good postoperative outcomes,with no significant differences being noted between the two IOLs.

Cognitive Control and Brain Network Dynamics during Word Generation Tasks Predicted Using a Novel Event-Related Deep Brain Activity Method

There is a growing interest in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with dementia and cognitive impairment at an early stage. Recent imaging studies have explored neural mechanisms underlying cognitive dysfunction based on brain network architecture and functioning. The dorsal anterior cingulate cortex (dACC) is thought to regulate large-scale intrinsic brain networks, and plays a primary role in cognitive processing with the anterior insular cortex (aIC), thus providing salience functions. Although neural mechanisms have been elucidated at the connectivity level by imaging studies, their understanding at the activity level still remains unclear because of limited time-based resolution of conventional imaging techniques. In this study, we investigated temporal activity of the dACC during word (verb) generation tasks based on our newly developed event-related deep brain activity (ER-DBA) method using occipital electroencephalogram (EEG) alpha-2 powers with a time resolution of a few hundred milliseconds. The dACC exhibited dip-like temporal waveforms indicating deactivation in an initial stage of each trial when appropriate verbs were successfully generated. By contrast, monotonous increase was observed for incorrect responses and a decrease was detected for no responses. The dip depth was correlated with the percentage of success. Additionally, the dip depth linearly increased with increasing slow component of the DBA index at rest across all subjects. These findings suggest that dACC deactivation is essential for cognitive processing, whereas its activation is required for goal-oriented behavioral outputs, such as cued speech. Such dACC functioning, represented by the dip depth, is supported by the activity of the upper brainstem region including monoaminergic neural systems.

Role of the Dorsal Anterior Cingulate Cortex in Relational Memory Formation: A Deep Brain Activity Index Study

The dorsal area of the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) constructs the salience network associated with the anterior insular cortex. Conventional brain imaging studies, such as functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), have demonstrated that relational memory formation occurs in the ACC. However, how such memory is encoded and retrieved remains unknown due to limited time resolution of conventional fMRI. This study aimed to investigate temporal dynamics of the dorsal ACC (dACC) during word-pair tasks based on a newly developed event-related deep brain activity (ER-DBA) method using occipital electroencephalogram (EEG) signal powers. The method assesses dACC activity at a temporal resolution of approximately 0.3 s beyond the conventional resolution limit. We found that transient deactivation of dACC during the presentation of the second word of each pair was essential for encoding success regardless of whether the words were related or unrelated. We also found that memory accuracy was not affected by the intervention of inter-trials until the recall trial. Taken together, these findings suggest that dACC deactivation for encoding success is accompanied with short-term potentiation essential for durability of memory. We further found that false memory formation associated with the presentation of word pairs was occasionally committed. In such cases, dACC exhibited a similar transient deactivation although false memory commission was independent of related or unrelated conditions. Our findings suggest that encoding and retrieval of associates are paralleled and that simultaneous production of associates seems to be an essential strategy for successful relational memory formation. The study was limited to the assessment of dACC activity and did not account for other regional brain activities or receptor regulation related to short-term potentiation. Effectiveness of a 12-Week Program of Active and Passive Stretching in Improving Low Back and Neck Pain in Japanese Sedentary Men

Purpose: Muscle stretching is frequently prescribed in physical therapy to manage lower back and neck pain. However, there is no clear evidence regarding the differences in effectiveness of active and passive stretching. Therefore, we aimed to evaluate the relative effectiveness of a 12-week program of active and passive stretching on selected physical and mental stress variables of sedentary men with lower back and neck pain. Methods: A cohort of 28 sedentary men, 30 - 49 years old, were divided into two intervention groups: the passive stretching group (PSG, n = 15) and the active stretching group (ASG, n = 13). A trainer assisted with static passive stretching, while participants in the ASG were provided with an instructional video. The following outcomes were measured at the start and end of the first and twelfth week of the stretching program: physical measures (visual analogue scale score of lower back and neck pain;finger-to-floor distance, gravimetric assessment of pelvic tilt, muscle hardness of the biceps femoris, and straight-leg raising) and mental stress measures (α-amylase and cortisol levels in saliva samples). Results: Although both active and passive stretching produced acute changes in lower back and neck pain, only passive stretching yielded long-term improvement in pain, finger-to-floor distance, pelvic tilt, hardness of biceps femoris muscle and cortisol levels (p Conclusion: Passive stretching is superior to active stretching in reducing pain, increasing muscle extensibility and correcting posture among a group of sedentary men with lower back and neck pain.
