Feasibility Demonstrations of Liquid Turbine Power Generator Driven by Low Temperature Heats

Lower temperature waste heats less than 373 K have strong potentials to supply additional energies because of their enormous quantities and ubiquity. Accordingly, reinforcement of power generations harvesting low temperature heats is one of the urgent tasks for the current generation in order to accomplish energy sustainability in the coming decades. In this study, a liquid turbine power generator driven by lower temperature heats below 373 K was proposed in the aim of expanding selectable options for harvesting low temperature waste heats less than 373 K. The proposing system was so simply that it was mainly composed of a liquid turbine, a liquid container with a biphasic medium of water and an underlying water-insoluble low-boiling-point medium in a liquid phase, a heating section for vaporization of the liquid and a cooling section for entropy discharge outside the system. Assumed power generating steps via the proposing liquid turbine power generator were as follows: step 1: the underlying low-boiling-point medium in a liquid phase was vaporized, step 2: the surfacing vapor bubbles of low-boiling-point medium accompanied the biphasic medium in their wakes, step 3: such high momentum flux by step 2 rotated the liquid turbine (i.e. power generation), step 4: the surfacing low-boiling-point medium vapor was gradually condensed into droplets, step 5: the low-boiling-point medium droplets were submerged to the underlying medium in a liquid phase. Experiments with a prototype liquid turbine power generator proved power generations in accordance with the assumed steps at a little higher than ordinary temperature. Increasing output voltage could be obtained with an increase in the cooling temperature among tested ranging from 294 to 296 K in contrast to normal thermal engines. Direct Production of High Pressure Hydrogen at Great Rate from Glycerol/Water/Metal Mixture

One of the key issues facing the global society today is to find renewable and sustainable energy sources. Hydrogen has gained much attention in recent years since it is one of fuels for fuel cells. It emits no carbon dioxide when it is used and so on. In this study, a great rate production of high pressure hydrogen rich gas from glycerol/water/metal mixtures was developed since glycerol has become one of the enormous industrial by-products, especially from biodiesel processing plants. It was found that cobalt was the optimum metal additive among tested metals of aluminum, cobalt, magnesium and nickel in terms of a hydrogen producing rate, a hydrogen partial pressure and a conversion ratio from 50 mol% glycerol/water mixtures under an operating temperature of 723 K. Concretely, hydrogen rich gas with concentration about 64%H2 and high partial pressure about 4 MPaN,H2 could be produced at the great producing rate of 42.9 LN,H2 dm-2min-1 and high conversion ratio about 60%H2. All the produced hydrogen rich gases from glycerol/water/metal mixtures were by no means inferior to pure hydrogen as a fuel for the polymer elec-trolyte fuel cell.

Producing single microbubbles with controlled size using microfiber

Microbubble-mediated pore formation in sonoporation includes a combination of complex processes such as collision or coalescence of translating or collapsing microbubbles with vascular cells. Although understanding the pore formation mechanisms may improve drug delivery efficiency, their details are still poorly understood. In the present study, we describe an experimental model that produces single air bubbles with controllable size. A carbon microfiber in liquids is illuminated by an infrared laser to produce individual bubbles having size comparable to that of the microfiber. The microbubbles can be physically isolated from the fiber for placing at arbitrary positions in the liquids. The lifetime of the bubbles is several tens of minutes depending on the intensity of the laser used. The preparation of the controllable air bubbles may be useful in future investigations of ultrasound-mediated microbubble–cell interactions.

Three-Dimensional Imaging of Pore-Scale Water Flooding Phenomena in Water-Wet and Oil-Wet Porous Media

The penetration of water during water flooding has been observed over many years using several methods. A microfocused X-ray computed tomography scanner can be used to directly observe 3D water flooding in a nondestructive manner. To eliminate the possibility of false images being produced because of X-ray broadening effects, we developed a visualization method by arranging the brightness distribution of all phases involved. Water flooding experiments were conducted using oil-wet and water-wet porous media. The water phase was injected upward into packed glass beads containing an oil phase, and the process was scanned every minute until steady state was reached. Using this scheme, real-time, the water invasion pattern and oil trapping process in clusters of pores and individual pores can be observed clearly. By eliminating false images, the boundary of each phase could be identified with high precision, even in a single pore. Porelevel phenomena, including snap off (which has never before been captured in a real 3D porous medium), piston-like displacement, and the curvature of the interface, were also observed. Direct measurement of the pore throat radius and the contact angle between the wetting and nonwetting phases gave an approximation of the capillary pressure during the piston-like displacement and snap-off processes.

Influence of percutaneous local therapy for hepatocellular carcinoma on gastric function

AIM:To investigate the influence of percutaneous local therapy on gastric myoelectrical activity in patients with hepatocellular ***:Forty-four patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) [27 males and 17 females,ranging in age from 49 to 81 years old(69.7 ± 8.01 years)] who were admitted for percutaneous local therapy were enrolled in this *** examined clinical abdominal symptoms using the Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale(GSRS) before and 3 d after percutaneous local *** also measured cutaneous fasting and postprandial electrogastrography(EGG) recordings before and 3 d after percutaneous local ***:We found that the percentage of normogastria in the fasting period was lower in the Child B group than in the Child A group(66.8% ± 8.6% vs 84.0% ± 3.8%).After percutaneous local therapy for HCC,the percentages of normogastria in the fasting period were significantly decreased(81.6% ± 3.5% vs 75.2% ± 4.5%).None of the postprandial EGG parameters changed significantly after percutaneous local therapy for *** local therapy for HCC reduced the power ratio(PR).In particular,the PR of tachygastria was significantly decreased after therapy(P < 0.01).However,no significant differences were found in the postprandial EGG ***,no significant differences were found in the calculated GSRS scores obtained from the questionnaire before and after ***:Gastric slow-wave dysrhythmias were induced by percutaneous local therapy in HCC patients,even though the GSRS scores obtained from the questionnaire did not change significantly.

Preparation of Silicon Nanoparticles by Pyrolysis of Organosilicon Compounds inside the Porous Carbon

To increase the capacity of the negative electrode for lithium-ion secondary batteries, we prepared Si-containing carbon microspheres. The target compound was obtained by thermal decomposition of hexaphenyldisilane embedded in porous carbon particles that contained Si-nanoparticles characterized by various methods. When charging/discharging characteristics were evaluated using a cell having the obtained material as a negative electrode, a remarkable improvement in charging characteristics was observed.

Contents of fly ash are important factors for the operation of coal-fired plants. Real-time monitoring of coal and fly ash such as unburned carbon in fly ash can be an indicator of the combustion conditions. Because of the strong signal intensity and the relative simplicity of the LIBS (Laser- Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy) technique, LIBS can be applicable for real-time composition measurement of coal and fly ash. This research presented here focused on the clarification of the effects of plasma temperature and coexisting materials on quantitative measurement of fly ash contents. Quantitative capability of LIBS was improved using the proposed plasma temperature correction method. The CO2 effect was also discussed to accurately evaluate unburned carbon in fly ash in exhausts. Using the results shown in this study, quantitative measurement of fly ash contents has been improved for wider applications of LIBS to practical fields.
