Carbohydrate Intake Is Correlated with the Glycated Albumin to Glycated Hemoglobin Ratio in Drug-Naive Patients with Type 2 Diabetes

Background: The glycated albumin (GA) to HbA1c ratio (GA/HbA1c ratio) has been reported to reflect postprandial hyperglycemia. Carbohydrate is the primary dietary macronutrient that causes postprandial hyperglycemia. Thus, we investigated whether carbohydrate intake was associated with the GA/HbA1c ratio in patients with type 2 diabetes. Methods: Daily energy intake and carbohydrate intake were estimated in twenty-two patients with type 2 diabetes who received no pharmacological therapy (18 men and 4 women, age 53 ± 11 years old). The energy index and the carbohydrate index were defined as the ratio of daily energy intake to body weight and daily carbohydrate intake to body weight, respectively. Results: The energy index was significantly correlated with the GA/HbA1c ratio (r = 0.451, p = 0.035), but not with fasting plasma glucose (FPG), HbA1c and GA. The carbohydrate index was significantly correlated with GA (r = 0.461, p = 0.031) and the GA/HbA1c ratio (r = 0.554, p = 0.007), but not with FPG and HbA1c. Multivariate analysis revealed that the carbohydrate index was independently associated with the GA/HbA1c ratio (β = 0.397, p = 0.046). Conclusions: The carbohydrate index was significantly correlated with GA and the GA/HbA1c ratio in the patients with type 2 diabetes. These results suggest that carbohydrate intake may be associated with the GA/HbA1c ratio through postprandial hyperglycemia.

Measuring surface geometry of adherent cells using oblique transillumination

We present a new technique for estimating cell surface geometry. A dish supporting adherent cells is observed using oblique transillumination and rotated in the horizontal plane using a stepping motor. The stage rotation-dependent movements of the start and end points of a shadow formed behind the illuminated cells uniquely determine the relative height differences between points along the cell surface. Thus, using custom-made apparatuses and living endothelial cells, we demonstrate that the combination of a rotating stage and oblique lighting allows for the evaluation of three-dimensional surface geometry of adherent cells. As compared to confocal microscopy and atomic force microscopy, which are commonly used for measuring cell surface geometry, this approach can be performed rapidly and is especially suitable for the observation of unstained cells over a large surface covering multiple cells at a time.

Remote open-path laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy for the analysis of manganese in steel samples at high temperature

A remote open-path laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy(LIBS) system was designed and studied in the present work for the purpose of combining the LIBS technique with the steel production line. In this system, the relatively simple configuration and optics were employed to measure the steel samples at a remote distance and a hot sample temperature. The system has obtained a robustness for the deviation of the sample position because of the open-path and alloptical structure. The measurement was carried out at different sample temperatures by placing the samples in a muffle furnace with a window in the front door. The results show that the intensity of the spectral lines increased as the sample temperature increased. The influence of the sample temperature on the quantitative analysis of manganese in the steel samples was investigated by measuring ten standard steel samples at different temperatures. Three samples were selected as the test sample for the simulation measurement. The results show that, at the sample temperature of 500 ℃, the average relative error of prediction is 3.1% and the average relative standard deviation is 7.7%, respectively.

An investigation on the nutrient and material effects of bark in komatsuna and tomato growing tests by using pots to determine the optimum mixed combination

The effects of bark on komatsuna (Japanese spinach) and tomato were investigated by changing the nitrogen content of chemical fertilizers and bark mixing ratio. Mixing 25 and 50% of bark with soil improved komatsuna growth, and also exceeded the growth rates obtained by using chemical fertilizers. However, komatsuna could not grow in 100% bark alone, with excessive amounts of bark majorly inhibiting komatsuna growth. The aeration of bark also did not enhance komatsuna growth. The nitrogen content and bark-mixing ratio had a much lower impact on tomato growth compared to komatsuna. In comparison, aerated bark was more effective in enhancing tomato growth compared to komatsuna growth.

Impact of postoperative sexual function on health-related quality of life after robot-assisted radical prostatectomy

Background:We investigated potential disparities in health-related quality of life,particularly concerning urinary function,between patients with preserved and those with impaired sexual function after robot-assisted radical prostatectomy(RARP).Materials and methods:BetweenDecember 2012 and April 2020,704men underwent RARP in our *** study included 155 patients with a preoperative 5-item International Index of Erectile Function(IIEF-5)of≥12 points and an assessable IIEF-5 at 12 months ***-related quality of life was assessed using the 8-item Short-Form Health Survey and Expanded Prostate Cancer Index Composite(EPIC)preoperatively and at 3,6,and 12months postoperatively.A logistic regression analysis andWilcoxon rank sum tests were ***:Patients were grouped according to the median IIEF-5 score 12 months after surgery:those with preserved sexual function(n=71)and those with impaired sexual function(n=84).The mental component summary of the 8-item Short-Form Health Survey was better in the group with preserved sexual function at 6 months postoperatively than in the group with impaired sexual function(p<0.01).In the EPIC,the group with preserved sexual function performed better not only in the sexual domain but also in the urinary domain at all time points comparedwith the groupwith impaired sexual function(p<0.01).In the comparison of the urinary subdomains of the EPIC,there were no significant differences in urinary function or incontinence,but there were significant differences in urinary distress and irritative/obstructive scores(p<0.01).Conclusions:Patients with preserved postoperative sexual function after RARP showed better urinary function than those with impaired sexual ***,preserved sexual function is closely associated with urinary function.

Application of Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy with Optical Hollow Fiber to Engine Exhaust Gas Measurement

In recent years, tighter regulation has been already enforced on harmful substances such as NOx, CO, and particles. Considering the above situation, it is important to monitor controlling factors of engine systems in order to improve efficiencies of their operations. As to car engines, an increasing concern in environmental issues such as air pollution, global warming and petroleum depletion has helped drive researches into various ways. Laser diagnostics has been applied to measure species concentration in the actual industrial fields. However there are several challenges to proceed in applying laser diagnostics to practical application. Especially stability of the measurement system is one of the most difficult issues. The purpose of this research is the development of a prompt measurement technique which can be applicable to various engine conditions. The Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy （TDLAS） using the hollow fiber has been developed to satisfy above requirements. By using a hollow fiber, misalignment of an optical axis and vulnerability of measurement environment such as vibration can be greatly reduced with sensitive and fast response features. It was demonstrated that this method can be applicable to measure gas compositions in engine exhaust with a range of millisecond response time. A sensitive method using tunable UV diode laser absorption spectroscopy was also discussed to detect NOx in exhausts.

Effect of Heterogeneity of Porous Media on Gas Permeation and Entrapment

Capillary trapping prevents the migration of CO2 in reservoirs due to buoyancy. The residual gas saturation is strongly influenced by the gas saturation after gas injection. In this study, we have investigated the effect of stratified structure of heterogeneous porous media on gas permeation and entrapment. Experiments were carried out at a laboratory condition for a nitrogen-water system with the packed beds of glass beads with various diameters which modeled stratified porous media. In the case of parallel structure, the injected gas selectively percolated into permeable layers. The gas permeation can hardly occur for the less permeable layers because of the capillary entrance pressure. In the case of serial structure, the interface of porous structure hindered the migration of gas across it, because of the capillary entrance pressure. When the gas percolated in the permeable layers, capillary fingering was developed in the layers. However, when the tip of finger reached the interface, fingers grew in tangential directions until the pressure built up to overcome the capillary entrance pressure. As a result, high gas saturation was achieved in the permeable layers of both upward and downward gas injections.

Comparison between combination therapy of percutaneous ethanol injection and radiofrequency ablation and radiofrequency ablation alone for patients with hepatocellular carcinoma

AIM: In the present study, the characteristics of PEI-RFA treatment were further elucidated by analyzing the relationship between the volume of coagulated necrosis and the energy requirement for ablation or the amount of ethanol injected into ***: The volume of coagulated necrosis, total energy requirement and energy requirement for coagulation of per unit volume were examined in the groups of PEI-RFA and RFA alone using the Cool-tip RF ***: The results showed that the volume of coagulated necrosis induced was significantly larger in PEI-RFA group than in routine RFA group, when the total energy administered was comparable in both *** PEI-RFA, enlargement of coagulated necrosis was admitted in 3 dimensions and the amount of energy requirement per unit volume of coagulated necrosis was negatively correlated with the amount of ethanol injected into ***: These results suggest that, compared to RFA alone, PEI-RFA enables to induce comparable coagulated necrosis with smaller energy requirement, and that PEI-RFA is likely to be less invasive than RFA alone irrespective of inducing enhanced coagulated ***, simple prior injection of ethanol may make RFA treatment more effective and less invasive for the treatment of patients with HCC.

Development of 2D Temperature and Concentration Measurement Method Using Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy

Exhaust gas temperature is an important factor in NOx, THC and PM emissions of engines. Especially 2D temperature and concentration distribution plays an important role for the engine efficiency. A thermocouple is intrinsically a point temperature measurement method and noncontact 2D temperature distribution cannot be attained by thermocouples. Recently, as a measurement technique with high sensitivity and high response, laser diagnostics has been developed and applied to the actual engine combustions. With these engineering developments, transient phenomena such as start-ups and load changes in engines have been gradually elucidated in various conditions. In this study, the theoretical and experimental research has been conducted in order to develop the noncontact and fast response 2D temperature and concentration distribution measurement method. The method is based on a Computed Tomography （CT） method using absorption spectra of water vapor at 1388 nm. It has been demonstrated that the method has been successfully applied to engine exhausts to measure 2D temperature distributions.
