A Case Study on Sustainability Analysis of Fisheries in Pangandaran, West Java Province

This research was to assess the sustainability of fisheries in Pangandaran, West Java. This fishery is an important one in the region, but is threatened by increasing over-exploitation which has led to a steady decrease in the production. In addition to over-exploitation problem, a record of tsunami disaster makes this fishery a unique case. This research, based on a set of primary and secondary data was carried out using the Rapfish analytical approach. Primary data were collected using a stratified cluster random sampling technique, where as many as 186 outboard fishing operators were selected. Meanwhile, relevant complementary data were solicited purposively from five employees of Pangandaran Marine and Fisheries Service. Following from the Rapfish approach, it was found through this research that sustainability levels of fisheries in Pangandaran fall into poor category. For all types of fisheries that exist in the region, almost all sustainability dimensions namely ecological, social, technological and ethical dimensions were scored below 50 of the 100 maximum values. This paper concludes with a suggestion, pointing out attributes that should receive government attention in order that the sustainability of the fisheries in the future.

Electrochemical decolorization of dye wastewater by surface-activated boron-doped nanocrystalline diamond electrode

Complex organics contained in dye wastewater are difficult to degrade and often require electrochemical advanced oxidation processes（EAOPs） to treat it. Surface activation of the electrode used in such treatment is an important factor determining the success of the *** performance of boron-doped nanocrystalline diamond（BD-NCD） film electrode for decolorization of Acid Yellow（AY-36） azo dye with respect to the surface activation by electrochemical polarization was studied. Anodic polarization found to be more suitable as electrode pretreatment compared to cathodic one. After anodic polarization, the originally H-terminated surface of BD-NCD was changed into O-terminated, making it more *** to the oxidation of surface functional groups and some portion of sp2 carbon in the BD-NCD film during anodic polarization, the electrode was successfully being activated showing lower background current, wider potential window and considerably less surface activity compared to the non-polarized one. Consequently, electrooxidation（EO） capability of the anodically-polarized BD-NCD to degrade AY-36 dye was significantly enhanced, capable of nearly total decolorization and chemical oxygen demand（COD） removal even after several times of re-using. The BD-NCD film electrode favored acidic condition for the dye degradation; and the presence of chloride ion in the solution was found to be more advantageous than sulfate active species.

Performance assessment of an inline horizontal swirl tube cyclone for gas-liquid separation at high pressure

The application of swirl tube cyclone for gas-liquid separation is attractive due to its small size and weight. However, very scarce information on the performance of the swirl tube cyclone especially at high operating pressure emulating actual field condition was published in journals. Performance assessment was usually done at a low operating pressure using either air-water, air-fine particle mixtures or dense gas such as SF6 . This paper fills the existing gaps and reports the initial findings on the performance assessment of a horizontal swirl tube cyclone for gas-liquid separation operating at a flow rate of 5 MMSCFD at 40-60 bar operating pressure.

Anti-inflammatory properties of oolong tea(Camellia sinensis)ethanol extract and epigallocatechin gallate in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cells

Objective: To evaluate the anti-inflammatory activity of oolong tea ethanol extract(OTEE) and epigallocatechin gallate(EGCG) on lipopolysaccharide-induced murine macrophage cell line(RAW 264.7).Methods: A cytotoxic assay using MTS tetrazolium was conducted to find a nontoxic level of OTEE and EGCG toward RAW 264.7 cells. Interleukins(IL-6, IL-1 b), tumor necrosis factor-a(TNF-a), and cyclooxigenase-2(COX-2) levels were measured by ELISA, and nitric oxide(NO) levels measured by a nitrate/nitrite colorimetric assay to determine the inhibition activity of OTEE and ***: Lipopolysaccharide induction increases NO, COX-2, IL-6, IL-1 b, and TNF-a levels compared with the untreated cell(negative control). The positive control,lipopolysaccharide-induced RAW 264.7 without treatments showed the highest level of all pro-inflammatory cytokines and modulators tested in this study. The positive control was used as standard to obtain OTEE and EGCG inhibition activity toward NO, COX-2,IL-6, IL-1 b, and TNF-a. OTEE had a higher inhibition activity toward NO, COX-2, IL-6,and IL-1 b than EGCG; the reverse was seen for TNF-a. However, both OTEE and EGCG suppressed production of NO, COX-2, IL-6, IL-1 b, and ***: OTEE and EGCG have the potential for use as anti-inflammatory drugs,which is shown by their ability to reduce the production of NO, COX-2, IL-6, IL-1 b, and TNF-a in active macrophages.

Progress in the technology of energy conversion from woody biomass in Indonesia

Sustainable and renewable natural resources as biomass that contains carbon and hydrogen elements can be a potential raw materials for energy conversion. In Indonesia, they comprise variable-sized wood from forests （i.e. natural forests, plantations and community forests that commonly produce small-diameter logs used as firewood by local people）, woody residues from logging and wood industries, oil-palm shell waste from crude palm oil factories, coconut shell wastes from coconut plantations, traditional markets as well as skimmed coconut oil and straws from rice cultivation. Four kinds of energy-conversion technologies have been empirically tested in Indonesia. First, gasification of rubber wood from unproductive rubber trees to generate heat energy for the drying of fermented chocolate seeds. Secondly, energy conversion from organic vegetable waste by implementing thermophylic fermentation methods that produce biogas as a fuel and for generating electricity and also concurrently generate organic by-products called hygen compost. Thirdly, gasification of charcoal and wood sawdust for electricity generation. Finally, environment-friendly energy conversion by carbonizing small-diameter logs, sawdust, wood slabs and coconut shells into charcoal. This yielded charcoal integrated with wood vinegar production through condensation of smoke/vapors emitted during carbonization, thereby mitigating the impact of air pollution. Among the four experimental technologies that of integrated charcoal and wood vinegar production had been spectacularly developed and favored by rural communities. This technology brought added value to the process and product due to the wood vinegar, useful as bio-pesticide, plant-growth hormone and organic fertilizer. Such integrated and environment-friendly production, therefore, should be sustained, because Indonesia occupies a significant and worldwide position as charcoal-producing and marketing country. The Frequency of Y Alu Polymorphism （YAP） Indel in the Minangkabau Malays in Peninsular Malaysia

Background： Minangkabau Malays （Melayu Minangkabau） is one of the Malay sub ethnic groups in Peninsular Malaysia. During the late 17th and early 18th centuries, migration of the Minangs from West Sumatra to the state of Negeri Sembilan Darul Khusus in Peninsular Malaysia took place and their descendants now form the main sub ethnic group in this state. The genetic polymorphisms of Y chromosome at DYS 287 locus were analyzed in Minangkahau Malays. Methods： A total of 41 buccal cells from healthy unrelated individual＇s males from Minangkabau Malays were typed for the DYS 287. The PCR products were separated on 2% （w/v） agarose gel followed by visualization under UV light. Results： Three out of 41 samples （7.32%） showed insertion （YAP＋） polymorphism, while the rest of the samples （92.68%） showed deletion （YAP-） polymorphism. This is the first report concerning the YAP in Malay population at Peninsular Malysia. Conclusion： The vAluable data obtained in this study will contribute to fill in the gap in the knowledge of YAP distribution in Malaysian population and will allow continuous interpretation of the evolution of YAP.
