静坐在球型网的中心 ,蜘蛛可能遭受天敌的攻击并暴露在不利的天气条件下 ,如风和雨。然而 ,栖居于网的中心使蜘蛛比隐藏在隐蔽场所中的蜘蛛能更迅速地察觉并捕获猎物 ,这是因为猎物的位置仅能被位于网中心的蜘蛛所确定。对在隐蔽场所中的蜘蛛而言 ,提高对猎物捕获率的方式之一是尽量减少隐蔽所与网中心的距离。而且 ,网中心与隐蔽所之间较短的距离使蜘蛛能更迅速地逃离危险境况。我使用既在网中心、又在隐蔽场所的硬类肥蛛 (LarinioidessclopetariusClerck) ,来检验这两种行为如何影响对猎物的捕获成功率。隐藏在隐蔽场所中的蜘蛛更经常忽略猎物 ,使猎物也有比较多的逃离机会 ,这样 ,与在网中心的蜘蛛相比 ,猎物的损失率就更高。另外 ,研究了隐蔽场所的位置对球型网图案的影响。在大多数球型网中 ,网中心上方的区域比网下方小 ,丝也比较少 ,形成了结构不对称的网 ;隐蔽场所通常在网的上方。当隐蔽场所的位置在实验中被倒转时 ,就形成了非典型的球型网。最后 ,L sclopetarius建造的网有很突出的边缘非对称性 ,与隐蔽场所相邻的区域面积较小 ,而远离隐蔽场所的区域面积较大。

Downhill varices are located in the upper part of the esophagus and are usually related to superior vena cava obstruction. Bleeding from these varices is extremely rare. We describe a 77-year-old patient with hematemesis due to downhill varices as a result of recurrent goiter. A right lobe thyroidectomy was carried out with disappearance of the varices.

Russian wheat aphid (Diuraphis noxia) is an international wheat pest and was first recorded in South Africa in 1978 in the Bethlehem area in the Eastern Free State. Le-sotho lies adjacent to one of the largest wheat producing areas in South Africa, the Eastern Free State, where winter wheat and facultative types are cultivated under dry land conditions. Wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) is an important crop adapted to all agro-ecological zones of Lesotho. Russian wheat aphid may have a significant impact on wheat yield. No monitoring or pest control is being done in Lesotho and at this stage there is very little information on the Russian wheat aphid resistance of wheat culti-vars cultivated in Lesotho. In view of this it is important to monitor the distribution of Russian wheat aphid biotypes in Lesotho and determine the level of Russian wheat aphid resistance in local Lesotho wheat cultivars. Two local Lesotho wheat cultivars, Bolane and Makalaote were screened together with South African cultivars Elands, Matlabas, Senqu, PAN3379, PAN3118 and SST387, in the glasshouse against all four known biotypes that occur in South Africa. All these cultivars were also planted in 5 m plots in the field at two localities Leribe and Roma in the lowlands of Lesotho. These cultivars were screened in the field for Russian wheat aphid resistance. The predomi-nant Russian wheat aphid biotypes in these areas were also determined. The Lesotho cultivar, Bolane had resistance against RWASA2 in the glasshouse, while Makalaote did not have any Russian wheat aphid resistance in either the glasshouse or field screenings. To contribute to food security an increasing wheat yield potential is a high priority. Russian wheat aphid has been included in the list of important international cereal pests. Dear Editor, In its latest edition, the World Health Organization （WHO） provides guidelines regarding the standardization of techniques for the measurement of sperm concentrationI and recommends use of a 100 μm-deep hemocytometer. However, these instructions are not always followed correctly.2 Furthermore, although hemocytometers provide more accurate and consistent results, they present several drawbacks： the chamber must be properly assembled prior to its use so as to ensure that the counts are correct and it needs to be cleaned thoroughly to remove all traces of sperm, which risks breaking the glass coverslip.

AIM To investigate disease-specific gene expression profiles of peripheral blood mononuclear cells(PBMCs) from Crohn's disease(CD) patients in clinical *** Patients with CD in clinical remission or with very low disease activity according to the Crohn's disease activity index were genotyped regarding nucleotidebinding oligomerization domain 2(NOD2),and PBMCs from wild-type(WT)-NOD2 patients,patients with homozygous or heterozygous NOD2 mutations and healthy donors were isolated for further *** cells were cultured with vitamin D,peptidoglycan(PGN) and lipopolysaccharide(LPS) for defined periods of time before RNA was isolated and subjected to microarray analysis using Clariom S assays and quantitative realtime ***2-and disease-specific gene expression profiles were evaluated with repeated measure ANOVA by a general linear *** Employing microarray assays,a total of 267 genes were identified that were significantly up-or downregulated in PBMCs of WT-NOD2 patients,compared to healthy donors after challenge with vitamin D and/or a combination of LPS and PGN(P < 0.05;threshold:≥ 2-fold change).For further analysis by real-time PCR,genes with known impact on inflammation and immunity were selected that fulfilled predefined expression *** a larger cohort of patients and controls,a disease-associated expression pattern,with higher transcript levels in vitamin D-treated PBMCs from patients,was observed for three of these genes,CLEC5 A(P < 0.030),lysozyme(LYZ;P < 0.047) and TREM1(P < 0.023).Six genes were found to be expressed in a NOD2-dependent manner(CD101,P < 0.002;CLEC5 A,P < 0.020;CXCL5,P < 0.009;IL-24,P < 0.044;ITGB2,P < 0.041;LYZ,P < 0.042).Interestingly,the highest transcript levels were observed in patients with heterozygous NOD2 *** Our data identify CLEC5 A and LYZ as CD-and NOD2-associated genes of PBMCs and encourage further studies on their pathomechanistic roles.

Objectives Quality of life(QoL) is a priority outcome in older adults suffering from cardiovascular diseases. Frailty and poor nutritional status may affect the QoL through mobility disorders and exhaustion. The objective of this study was to determine if physical frailty and nutritional status were associated with QoL, in older cardiology patients. Methods Cross sectional, observational study conducted in a cardiology department from a university hospital. Participants(n = 100) were aged 70 and older. Collected data included age, sex, cardiac diseases, New York Heart Association(NYHA) classification, comorbidities(Charlson Index) and disability. A Short Physical Performance Battery(SPPB), including walking speed assessment was performed;handgrip strength were measured as well as Fried’s frailty phenotype. Nutritional status was assessed using the Mini Nutritional Assessment(MNA) and Body Mass Index(BMI), inflammation by C-reactive protein(CRP). QoL was assessed using the EORTC–QLQ questionnaire. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to study the associations between all recorded parameters and QoL. Results In participants(mean age: 79.3 ± 6.7 years;male: 59%), Charlson index, arrhythmia, heart failure, NYHA class III-IV, MNA, disability, walking speed, SPPB score, frailty and CRP were significantly associated with QoL in univariate analysis. Multivariate analysis showed that NYHA class III-IV(P < 0.001), lower MNA score(P = 0.03), frailty(P < 0.0001), and higher CRP(P < 0.001) were independently associated with decreased QoL. Conclusions Frailty, nutritional status and inflammation were independently associated with poor QoL. Further studies are needed to assess the efficacy of nutritional and physical interventions on QoL in this population.

Background: Indocyanine green (ICG) fluorescence imaging is a promising tool for intraoperative decision-making during surgical procedures, in particular to assess organs perfusion. Methods: We used the ICG fluorescence during liver transplantations in six cirrhotic patients to help assessing the graft biliary duct perfusion in order to identify the appropriate level to perform the anastomosis. We also used ICG fluorescence also in five patients receiving kidney-pancreas transplantation to evaluate the perfusion levels of the duodenal stump of the pancreas graft. Results: Follow-up period for the patients was 12 months. The perioperative period was uneventful, no biliary complications such as leaks or stenosis were reported after liver transplantation, no complications of the entero-enteric anastomoses occurred after pancreatic transplantation. Conclusions: ICG fluorescence seems to safely provide important objectifiable perfusion information during organ transplantation procedures that can integrate surgeon's expertise. In fact, detecting intra-operatively perfusion defects, it allows real time modifications on technical strategies potentially useful to reduce the feared risk of anastomotic leakage and consequent severe complications.
