Encapsulating Peritoneal Sclerosis: A Rare Devastating Peritoneal Disease: Case Series and Literature Review

Background: Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis is a rare but life-threatening condition in peritoneal dialysis. It is associated with extensive thickening and fibrosis of the peritoneum resulting in recurrent small bowel obstructions and malnutrition. Herein we present case series of encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis diagnosed and treated in a large center of peritoneal dialysis in the State of Qatar followed by literature review to increase the awareness of physicians to it. Case Presentation: The data were collected retrospectively from 180 peritoneal dialysis patients at Hamad General Hospital, Doha, Qatar, between 2008 and 2016. The diagnosis of encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis was based on clinical and radiological features. Seven patients (3.8%) were diagnosed with encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis. The mean age of the patients was 49 years (range, 23 to 65 years). The mean duration of peritoneal dialysis was 6 years (range, 3 to 7 years). The mean peritonitis episodes were 1.8 (range 1 to 4 episodes). Five patients were diagnosed with encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis after stopping peritoneal dialysis, and two patients diagnosed while they were on peritoneal dialysis treatment. Five patients are still alive and were treated with oral prednisolone and tamoxifen. Two patients underwent adhesiolysis surgery, one of them died due to recurrent sepsis and malnutrition. Another patient died because of cardiac arrest during hemodialysis. The overall mortality rate was 28.5% in our series. Conclusions: Encapsulating peritoneal sclerosis is a rare and life-threatening peritoneal disease in chronic peritoneal dialysis patients. It requires high index of suspicion for early diagnosis and treatment.

A field study to evaluate the impact of different tillage regimes and nitrogen levels on yield and yield components of maize (Zea mays L.), was conducted during autumn 2014 at Students Farm, Department of Agronomy, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad. The experiment was laid out in RCBD (Randomized Complete Block Design), with split plot arrangement having three replications. The experiment was comprised of three tillage regimes (Minimum, Conventional and Deep) and three nitrogen levels viz: 100, 200 and 300 kg•ha-1. Urea was used as a source of nitrogen, sulphate of potash as a source of potassium and triple super phosphate as a source of phosphorous. The amount of phosphorous and potash was constant in all the treatments i.e. 125 kg•ha-1 and 100 kg•ha-1 respectively. Results of present study are summarized as yield parameters are significantly affected by different nitrogen levels and tillage regimes. Maximum number of plants at harvest (7.93), number of grain rows per cob (17.70), number of grains per row (34.31), number of grains per cob (678.58), and cob weight (187.50 g) were observed in deep tillage at 200 kg•ha-1 nitrogen application. 1000-grain weight (275.52 g), biological yield (15.66 t•ha-1), grain yield (6.16 t•ha-1) and dried stalk yield (9.91 t•ha-1) were observed maximum in deep tillage at 200 kg•ha-1 nitrogen application. Harvest index significantly affected by tillage regimes and maximum harvest index (39.58%) were recorded in deep tillage which was statistically at par with conventional tillage (38.83%). It was concluded that higher grain yield of maize can be obtained by deep tillage with the application of 200 kg•ha-1 nitrogen application under the prevailing conditions of Faisalabad.

Interactive Effect of Different Nitrogen and Potash Levels on the Incidence of Bacterial Leaf Blight of Rice (<i>Oryza sativa L.</i>)

An experiment was conducted at Rice Research Institute, Kala Shah Kaku in 2010 during kharif season to study the influence of nitrogen (N) and potash (K) on severity of Bacterial leaf blight (BLB) of rice (Oryza sativa L.) aimed at improving productivity. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with factorial arrangement with three replications. Treatments comprised of: 0 kg N ha-1, 75 kg N ha-1, 100 kg N ha-1, 125 kg N ha-1 and 0 kg K ha-1, 50 kg K ha-1, 75 kg K ha-1, 100 kg K ha-1. Data on disease severity and paddy yield were recorded using standard procedures. Paddy yield was affected significantly by various combinations of N & K. In case of bacterial leaf blight, minimum diseased incidence percentage was observed when nitrogen alone was applied @ 75 kg·ha-1 in contrast to fertilizer applied @ 125 kg N ha-1 + 50 kg K ha-1 which showed maximum diseased incidence percentage. Maximum paddy yield (4.32 t·ha-1 ) was recorded when rice was fertilized @ 75 kg N ha-1 + 100 kg K ha-1 as compared to sole fertilization of 75 kg K ha-1 that produced minimum paddy yield (2.40 t·ha-1). Maximum gross income, net returns and benefit cost ratio were obtained where rice crop was fertilized @ 75 kg N ha-1 and 100 kg K ha-1.

Yield and Quality of Forage Oat (<i>Avena sativa</i>L.) Cultivars as Affected by Seed Inoculation with Nitrogenous Strains

Nitrogen availability can be enhanced with the application of nitrogen fixing bacteria and it may be helpful in increasing forage yield and improving quality of oat. Therefore, a field trial to evaluate the effect of seed inoculation with nitrogen fixing bacteria on forage yield and quality of oat was carried out at Agronomic Research Area, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad during Rabi season 2013-14. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with factorial arrangements using three replications. The experiment was comprised of two integrated approaches. The first approach was oat cultivars consisting of four treatments, V1 (AVON), V2 (S-2000), V3 (S-2011) and V4 (PD2LV65) and the second approach was seed inoculation consisting of three treatments, S0 (control), S1 (Azotobacter spp.), S2 (Azospirillum spp.). Fisher’s analysis of variance technique was used for statistically interpretation of data by using least significant difference (LSD) test at 5% level of probability. Nitrogen fixing bacteria significantly affect the germination count (m2), plant height (cm), number of tillers (m2), number of leaves per tiller, leaf area per tiller (cm2), green forage yield (t·ha-1) and dry matter yield (t ha-1). The maximum green forage yield (85.2 t·ha-1), dry matter yield (14.1 t ·ha-1) and crude protein (11.5%) were recorded where Azotobacter inoculation was applied. The interaction between cultivars and nitrogenous strains was significant for green forage yield (t·ha-1), dry matter yield (t·ha-1) and crude protein (%). Conclusion showed that cultivar Sargodha-2011 which was inoculated with Azotobacter spp. gave higher forage yield of good quality.

The present study was conducted in 4 × 4 half diallel cross fashion using the genotypes named as NL-2002, NL-2006, Punjab Masoor-2009 and Markaz-2009 for the evaluation of gene action in the inheritance of economic traits of lentil by following the Griffing (1956) Method of analysis. Minirap 13.1 Copyright© 2000, Minitab inc. Method II, Model I was used for the analysis and gene action was computed by variance component analysis using Mixed Model with GLM (general linear model) procedure. The F1 direct crosses along with the parental genotypes were then evaluated by framing the experiment in RCBD in 3 replications. The data were recorded for the characters which are under the study are, plant height (cm), number of primary branches, number of secondary branches, number of pods per plant, number of seed per pod, seed yield per plant, biomass (gram), 100 seeds weight (gram), harvest index (%), yield per plant. The simple ANOVA for all the characters revealed that difference among genotypes was highly significant. As significant differences were present between the genotypes, it permitted subsequent analysis of the data. The Combining Ability (CA) results showed that value of variance for GCA (General Combining Ability) was significantly higher than that of those of the values of variance of SCA (Specific Combining Ability). Hence current results clearly depicted the role of additive type of gene action governing the characters under study.

A field study was conducted to evaluate the effect of organic mulches and tillage practices on growth, yield of cluster bean and soil physical properties. Experiment was comprised of two factors: A (Tillage), B (Mulches). Factor A was assigned to main plot and consisted of two treatments (Minimum tillage and Conventional tillage). Factor B was assigned to sub plot and consisted of four treatments (no mulch, wheat straw mulch, grass clipping mulch and saw dust mulch). The mulching materials were partially incorporated in the field after germination of crop. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with split plot arrangement having three replications. Control treatment was kept for comparison. All other agronomic practices were kept standardized and consistent for all the treatments. Data regarding growth and yield components were collected and analyzed statistically by fisher analysis of variance and treatment significance was measured by significant difference test at 5% probability level. The factors, tillage and mulches significantly affected growth, yield, yield parameters and soil physical properties. Maximum plant population (31.7 m2), plant height (159 cm), branches per plant (18.9), cluster per plant (15.88), grains per pod (7.3), 1000-grain weight (34.6 g), grain yield (1.9 t•ha-1), biological yield (9.91 t•ha-1) and harvest index (19.15) was recorded in conventional tillage comparative to minimum tillage. Mulches also affected grain yield, and maximum grain yield was recorded in wheat straw mulch (1.88 t•ha-1) followed by grass clipping mulch (1.81 t•ha-1) and saw dust mulch (1.76 t•ha-1) while minimum grain yield was recorded in control without mulch application (1.67 t•ha-1). Meiosis is pivotal for sexual reproduction and fertility. Meiotic programmed DNA double-strand breaks(DSBs) initiate homologous recombination, ensuring faithful chromosome segregation and generation of gametes. However, few studies have focused on meiotic DSB formation in human ***, we report four infertile siblings born to a consanguineous marriage, with three brothers suffering from non-obstructive azoospermia and one sister suffering from unexplained infertility with normal menstrual cycles and normal ovary sizes with follicular activity. An autosomal recessive mutation in TOP6BL was found co-segregating with infertility in this family. Investigation of one male patient revealed failure in programmed meiotic DSB formation and meiotic arrest prior to pachytene stage of prophase *** models carrying similar mutations to that in patients recapitulated the spermatogenic abnormalities of the patient. Pathogenicity of the mutation in the female patient was supported by observations in mice that meiotic programmed DSBs failed to form in mutant oocytes and oocyte maturation failure due to absence of meiotic recombination. Our study thus illustrates the phenotypical characteristics and the genotype-phenotype correlations of meiotic DSB formation failure in humans.
