Hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with chronic hepatitis C virus infection without cirrhosis

AiM:To investigate and characterise patients with chronic hepatitis C virus(HCV) infection presenting with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) in the absence of ***:Patients with chronic hepatitis C infection without cirrhosis presenting with HCC over a 2-year period were *** clinical case notes,blood test results and histological specimens were reviewed to identify whether additional risk factors for the development of HCC were ***:Six patients(five male,one female) with chronic hepatitis C infection without cirrhosis presented to a single centre with HCC over a 2-year *** patients were treated by surgical resection and one patient underwent liver *** of generous histological specimens confirmed the presence of HCC and the absence of cirrhosis in all *** degree of fibrosis of the background liver was staged as mild(n = 1),moderate(n = 4) or bridging fibrosis(n = 1).Review of the clinical case notes revealed that all cases had an additional risk factor for the development of HCC(four had evidence of past hepatitis B virus infection;two had a history of excessive alcohol consumption;a further patient had prolonged exposure to immune suppression).CONCLUSiON:HCC does occur in patients with non-cirrhotic HCV infection who have other risk factors for hepatocarcinogenesis.

intra-axonal protein synthesis–a new target for neural repair?

Although initially argued to be a feature of immature neurons with incomplete polarization, there is clear evidence that neurons in the peripheral nervous system retain the capacity for intra-axonal protein synthe- sis well into adulthood. This localized protein synthesis has been shown to contribute to injury signaling and axon regeneration in peripheral nerves. Recent works point to potential for protein synthesis in axons of the vertebrate central nervous system, mRNAs and protein synthesis machinery have now been docu- mented in lamprey, mouse, and rat spinal cord axons. intra-axonal protein synthesis appears to be activated in adult vertebrate spinal cord axons when they are regeneration-competent. Rat spinal cord axons regen- erating into a peripheral nerve graft contain mRNAs and markers of activated translational machinery. indeed, levels of some growth-associated mRNAs in these spinal cord axons are comparable to the regen- erating sciatic nerve. Markers of active translation tend to decrease when these axons stop growing, but can be reactivated by a second axotomy. These emerging observations raise the possibility that mRNA transport into and translation within axons could be targeted to facilitate regeneration in both the peripheral and central nervous systems.

inflammatory breast cancer clusters: A hypothesis

Cancer clusters have long been a focus of interest because of the possibility of identifying etiologic agents. Only on rare occasions, however, have such cluster investigations been successful. One major difficulty in cluster investigations, particularly in the area of breast cancer, is the long latent period. There have been a number of publications providing a discouraging picture regarding cancer cluster investigations. The possibility of learning from a cluster investigation, however, is greatly increased if the cancer involved is relatively rare and if it has a short latent period. inflammatory breast cancer(iBC) fits these criteria and is worth pursuing because of the strong evidence that environmental factors play a major role. in this report we describe our experience with several clusters and the lessonslearned which are now being utilized to improve investigation of future iBC clusters. The first iBC cluster that we evaluated was in 2000, when we were asked to investigate an apparent cluster of iBC in Castro Valley, California where three women in an office setting of 24 people were diagnosed with iBC in a ten month period from May 1999 to March 2000. Our investigation of this striking cluster did not yield a specific trigger for this cluster but it did indicate that the women involved all had at least two iBC risk factors that may well have made them susceptible to getting iBC. We are now investigating another apparent cluster in Texas and are aware of several others requiring careful consideration. We see a need for a consistent protocol for the evaluation of iBC clusters focusing on the laboratory investigation of environmental triggers, primarily infectious agents and chemical carcinogens.

Ecological Restoration Zones within the Monkey River Area (Belize) Using Community Grown Nurseries to Produce Plants for Riparian Strips

Agricultural runoff near watersheds causes severe pollution of estuaries that can cause severe detrimental effects. The purpose of this experiment is to determine the most effective riparian strip combination to reduce offsite runoff and pollution. Three combinations of riparian strips were tested by simulating runoff in a greenhouse environment with drip irrigation. Results of elements in leaf tissues, effluent volume, and effluent element concentrations showed that the riparian strips with a combination of grass and trees was the most successful. if the detailed plan provided by this experiment for growing and planting a riparian strip near Monkey River is installed, then it can be concluded that the riparian strip will reduce nutrient runoff and help prevent erosion.

The formulae are established in position,momentum,and four-dimensional spaces for the one-range addition theorems of generalized integer and noninteger μ Coulomb,and exponential type correlated interaction potentials with hyperbolic cosine（GCTCP and GETCP HC）.These formulae are expressed in terms of one-range addition theorems of complete orthonormal sets of Ψα-exponential type orbitals（Ψ α-ETO）,α-momentum space orbitals（α-MSO）,and zα-hyperspherical harmonics（zα-HSH） *** one-range addition theorems obtained can be useful in the electronic structure calculations of atoms and molecules when the GCTCP and GETCP HC in position,momentum,and four-dimensional spaces are employed.

Development of a surgical procedure for removal of a placentome from a pregnant ewe during gestation

Background: in recent decades, there has been a growing interest in the impact of insults during pregnancy on postnatal health and disease. it is known that changes in placental development can impact fetal growth and subsequent susceptibility to adult onset diseases;however, a method to collect sufficient placental tissues for both histological and gene expression analyses during gestation without compromising the pregnancy has not been described. The ewe is an established biomedical model for the study of fetal development. Due to its cotyledonary placental type, the sheep has potential for surgical removal of materno-fetal exchange tissues, i.e., placentomes. A novel surgical procedure was developed in well-fed control ewes to excise a single placentome at ***: A follow-up study was performed in a cohort of nutrient-restricted ewes to investigate rapid placental changes in response to undernutrition. The surgery averaged 19 min, and there were no viability differences between control and sham ewes. Nutrient restricted fetuses were smaller than controls(4.7 ± 0.1 kg vs. 5.6 ± 0.2 kg;P ith greater dam weight loss(-32.4 ± 1.3 kg vs. 14.2 ± 2.2 kg;P ight of sampled placentomes and placentome numbers did not ***: With this technique, gestational studies in the sheep model will provide insight into the onset and complexity of changes in gene expression in placentomes resulting from undernutrition(as described in our study),overnutrition, alcohol or substance abuse, and environmental or disease factors of relevance and concern regarding the reproductive health and developmental origins of health and disease in humans and in animals.

Environmentally relevant concentrations of aminopolycarboxylate chelating agents mobilize Cd from humic acid

Although Cd is a pollutant of public health relevance,many dietary sources from which it can be absorbed into human tissues remain *** it is well established that the biogeochemical cycle of Cd involves its complexation with environment-derived ligands（e.g.,humic acids,HAs） and anthropogenic ones（e.g.,chelating agents,CAs）,the interaction of Cd with both of these ligands is less well *** gain insight,a HA–Cd complex was injected on a size-exclusion chromatography（SEC） column coupled on-line with a flame atomic absorption spectrometer（FAAS） using 10 mmol/L Tris buffer（pH 8.0） as the mobile *** approach allowed us to observe the intact HA–Cd complex and the retention behavior of Cd as a function of 2–20 μmol/L concentrations of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid（EDTA）,diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid（DTPA） or methylglycinediacetic acid（MGDA） that were added to the mobile *** increase of the retention time of Cd was indicative of a partial or complete abstraction of Cd from *** results revealed that all CAs abstracted Cd from the HA–Cd complex at concentrations of 5 μmol/L,while MGDA and DTPA were effective at 2 μmol/*** bioavailability of some of the on-column formed CA–Cd complexes explains the previously reported increased accumulation of Cd in periphyton in the ecosystem downstream of wastewater treatment *** addition,our results imply that the use of effluents which contain CAs and Cd for the irrigation of food crops can introduce Cd into the food supply and compromise food safety.
