Situated at the intersection of technology and medicine,the internet of Things(ioT)holds the promise of addressing some of healthcare's most pressing challenges,from medical error,to chronic drug shortages,to overburdened hospital systems,to dealing with the COViD-19 ***,despite considerable recent technological advances,the pace of successful implementation of promising ioT healthcare initiatives has been *** inspire more productive collaboration,we present here a simple—but surprisingly underrated—problemoriented approach to developing healthcare *** further assist in this effort,we reviewed the various commercial,regulatory,social/cultural,and technological factors in the development of the *** propose that fog computing—a technological paradigm wherein the burden of computing is shifted from a centralized cloud server closer to the data source—offers the greatest promise for building a robust and scalable healthcare ioT *** this end,we explore the key enabling technologies that underpin the fog architecture,from the sensing layer all the way up to the *** is our hope that ongoing advances in sensing,communications,cryptography,storage,machine learning,and artificial intelligence will be leveraged in meaningful ways to generate unprecedented medical intelligence and thus drive improvements in the health of many people.

iron deposition in Parkinson’s disease(PD)is a potential disease-modifying *** previously showed that supplementation of the iron-exporter,ceruloplasmin,selectively corrected nigral iron elevation in the 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine(MPTP)*** delivers iron to transferrin(Tf),the extracellular iron-transporting *** show that Tf protein levels are decreased in the nigra of post-mortem PD brains compared with controls(−35%;n=10 each).Because Tf traffics iron away from iron-replete tissues,we hypothesized that Tf supplementation could selectively facilitate iron export from the nigra in *** cultured neurons,Tf treatment corrected iron accumulation,and subcutaneous Tf to mice ameliorated iron accumulation and motor deficits in the MPTP model of *** these data support a role for Tf in the disease mechanism for PD,and its potential use for correcting disorders of iron overload,Tf therapy also caused systemic iron depletion,which could limit its application for PD.

Arctic sea-ice extent: No record minimum in 2023 or recent years

Arctic sea-ice extent reaches its minimum each year in September. On 11 September 2023 the minimum was 4.969 million square kilometers(***^(2)). This was not a record low, which occurred in 2012, when the minimum was 4.175 ***^(2), 0.794 ***^(2) less than the minimum in 2023. However, the ice extent had decreased by 0.432 ***^(2) compared with 2022. Nevertheless, the summer melting in 2023 was remarkably less than expected when considering the strong heat waves in the atmosphere and ocean, with record temperatures set around the world. in general, there is a high correlation between the long-term decrease in sea-ice extent and the increasing CO_(2) in the atmosphere, where the increase of CO_(2) in recent decades explains about 80% of the decrease in sea ice in September, while the remainder is caused by natural variability.

This paper describes severe plastic deformation(SPD)procedures,which are utilized to form an ultrafine-grained structure in metallic *** the SPD process,a solid material sample is subjected to very high loads without a significant change in sample *** the present work,the high-pressure torsion(HPT)process,as one of the SPD techniques,which achieves a high degree of deformation and ensures refinement of the microstructure,will be discussed in more *** that grain size control is accepted as a method to obtain materials with desired characteristics,an overview of the properties of ultrafine-grained titanium-based biomaterials to be used in medicine is ***,particular attention is dedicated to the influences of HPT process parameters,primarily hydrostatic pressure,and number of revolutions during torsion,on the grain size and physical and mechanical characteristics(modulus of elasticity,microhardness,and tensile properties),corrosion resistance,and biocompatibility of the titanium-based biomaterials.A review of the literature indicates that titanium-based materials obtained by the SPD process show improved mechanical and physical properties without losing biocompatibility and corrosion resistance,which suggests that these methods of obtaining implants are something that should be further developed in the future.

Understanding the neural underpinning of human gait and balance is one of the most pertinent challenges for 21st-century translational neuroscience due to the profound impact that falls and mobility disturbances have on our aging *** and gait control does not happen automatically,as previously believed,but rather requires continuous involvement of central nervous *** effectively exert control over the body,the brain must integrate multiple streams of sensory information,including visual,vestibular,and somatosensory *** mechanisms which underpin the integration of these multisensory signals are the principal topic of the present *** multisensory integration theories focus on how failure of cognitive processes thought to be involved in multisensory integration leads to falls in older *** emphasis,however,has been placed on specific contributions of individual sensory modalities to multisensory integration processes and cross-modal interactions that occur between the sensory modalities in relation to gait and *** the present work,we review the contributions of somatosensory,visual,and vestibular modalities,along with their multisensory intersections to gait and balance in older adults and patients with Parkinson’s *** also review evidence of vestibular contributions to multisensory temporal binding windows,previously shown to be highly pertinent to fall risk in older ***,we relate multisensory vestibular mechanisms to potential neural substrates,both at the level of neurobiology(concerning positron emission tomography imaging)and at the level of electrophysiology(concerning electroencephalography).We hope that this integrative review,drawing influence across multiple subdisciplines of neuroscience,paves the way for novel research directions and therapeutic neuromodulatory approaches,to improve the lives of older adults and patients with neurodegenerative diseases.

Hand Gesture-based Artificial Neural Network Trained Hybrid Human–machine interface System to Navigate a Powered Wheelchair

individuals with cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy often lack fine motor control of their fingers which makes it difficult to control traditional powered wheelchairs using a *** have shown the use of surface electromyography to steer powered wheelchairs or automobiles either through simulations or gaming ***,these studies significantly lack issues with real world scenarios such as user’s safety,real-time control,and efficiency of the controller *** purpose of this study was to design,evaluate,and implement a hybrid human–machine interface system for a powered wheelchair that can detect human intent based on artificial neural network trained hand gesture recognition and navigate a powered wheelchair without colliding with objects around the *** Conjugate Gradient(SCG),Bayesian Regularization(BR),and Levenberg Marquart(LM)supervised artificial neural networks were trained in offline testing on eight participants without disability followed by online testing using the classifier with highest *** Regularization architecture showed highest accuracy at 98.4%across all participants and hidden *** participants successfully completed the path in an average of 5 min and 50 s,touching an average of 22.1%of the *** proposed hybrid system can be implemented to assist people with neuromuscular disabilities in near future.

The combination of induced pluripotent stem cells and bioscaffolds holds promise for spinal cord regeneration

Spinal cord injuries（SCis） are debilitating conditions for which no effective treatment currently exists. The damage of neural tissue causes disruption of neural tracts and neuron loss in the spinal cord. Stem cell replacement offers a solution for SCi treatment by providing a source of therapeutic cells for neural function restoration. induced pluripotent stem cells（i PSCs） have been investigated as a potential type of stem cell for such therapies. Transplantation of i PSCs has been shown to be effective in restoring function after SCis in animal models while they circumvent ethical and immunological concerns produced by other stem cell types. Another approach for the treatment of SCi involves the graft of a bioscaffold at the site of injury to create a microenvironment that enhances cellular viability and guides the growing axons. Studies suggest that a combination of these two treatment methods could have a synergistic effect on functional recovery post-neural injury. While much progress has been made, more research is needed before clinical trials are possible. This review highlights recent advancements using i PSCs and bioscaffolds for treatment of SCi.
