Traditionally, the success of a researcher is assessed by the number of publications he or she publishes in peer-reviewed, indexed, high impact journals. This essential yardstick, often referred to as the impact of a specific researcher, is assessed through the use of various metrics. While researchers may be acquainted with such matrices, many do not know how to use them to enhance their careers. In addition to these metrics, a number of other factors should be taken into consideration to objectively evaluate a scientist＇s profile as a researcher and academician. Moreover, each metric has its own limitations that need to be considered when selecting an appropriate metric for evaluation. This paper provides a broad overview of the wide array of metrics currently in use in academia and research. Popular metrics are discussed and defined, including traditional metrics and article-level metrics, some of which are applied to researchers for a greater understanding of a particular concept, including varicocete that is the thematic area of this Special Issue of Asian Journal of Andrology. We recommend the combined use of quantitative and qualitative evaluation using judiciously selected metrics for a more objective assessment of scholarly output and research impact.

Evaluation of heavy metal contamination hazards in nuisance dust particles, in Kurdistan Province, western Iran

The effects of natural andgeochemical factors depending on heavy metal contamination in nuisance dust particles were evaluated. The nuisance dust particles were sampled using passive deposit gauge method for one year from April2010 to March2011 and the obtained samples were measured for the total contents and the contamination levels of Fe, Mn, Cu and As usinggeo-accumulation index （Igeo ）, enrichment factor （EF） and the integrated pollution index （IPI）. The results showed that, the contamination levels of Fe and Mn based on Igeo values, were uncontaminated （Igeo 〈 0）（variations of the Igeo index was from -3.11 to -1.751 for Fe, from -0.630 to -1.925 for Mn）, while the values of Cu and As were demonstrated to have moderate contamination based on Igeo values （variations of Igeo index was from -1.125 to 0.848 for Cu, and from -2.002 to 1.249 for As）. The analysis of EF also revealed minor to moderate enrichment for Mn （1.215-4.214）, minor to moderately severe enrichment for Cu （2.791-6.484）, and As （1.370-8.462）, respectively. The variation of the IPI index also showed low to moderate level of heavy metal pollution in nuisance dust particulates （0.511-1.829）. The analysis of the results also approved that the natural processes andgeochemical variables （the changing meteorological parameters） can significantly affect the availability of heavy metals in nuisance dust particles in Western Iran.

Improvement in IBC-silicon solar cell performance by insertion of highly doped crystalline layer at heterojunction interfaces

By inserting a thin highly doped crystalline silicon layer between the base region and amorphous silicon layer in an interdigitated back-contact （IBC） silicon solar cell, a new passivation layer is investigated. The passivation layer performance is characterized by numerical simulations. Moreover, the dependence of the output parameters of the solar cell on the additional layer parameters （doping concentration and thickness） is studied. By optimizing the additional passivation layer in terms of doping concentration and thickness, the power conversion efficiency could be improved by a factor of 2.5%, open circuit voltage is increased by 30 mV and the fill factor of the solar cell by 7.4%. The performance enhancement is achieved due to the decrease of recombination rate, a decrease in solar cell resistivity and improvement of field effect passivation at heterojunction interface. The above-mentioned results are compared with reported results of the same conventional interdigitated back-contact silicon solar cell structure. Furthermore, the effect of a-Si：H/c-Si interface defect density on IBC silicon solar cell parameters with a new passivation layer is studied. The additional passivation layer also reduces the sensitivity of output parameter of solar cell to interface defect density.

Omeprazole-based triple therapy with low-versus high-dose of clarithromycin plus amoxicillin for H pylori eradication in Iranian population

AIM: To investigate the efficacy and tolerability of H pylori eradication in an omeprazole-based triple therapy with high-and low-dose of clarithromycin and amoxicillin. METHODS: One hundred and sixty H pylori positive patients were randomly assigned to two groups based on the following 2 wk investigation; (1) group A or low-dose regimen received omeprazole 20 mg b.i.d, clarithromycin 250 mg b.i.d and amoxicillin 500 mg b.i.d; and (2) group B or high-dose regimen received omeprazole 20 mg b.i.d, clarithromycin 500 mg b.i.d and amoxicillin 1000 mg b.i.d. During the study H pylori status was assessed by histology and rapid urease test prior and by 13C-urea breath test 6 wk after the therapy. Standard questionnaires were administered to determine the compliance to treatment and possible adverse events of therapy. Data were subject to χ2 to compare the eradication rates in the two groups. The significant level of 95% (P ≤ 0.05) was considered statistically different. RESULTS: We found that the per-protocol eradication rate was 88% (68/77) in group A, and 89% (67/75) in group B. The intension-to-treat eradication rate was 85% (68/80) in group A and 83.75% (67/80) in group B. Overall adverse events were 26% in group A and 31% in group B. The adverse events were generally mild in nature and tolerated well in both groups with a compliance of 98% in group A vs 96% in group B. CONCLUSION: The omeprazole-based low dose regimen of clarithromycin and amoxicillin for two weeks in H pylori eradication is as effective as high dose regimen in Iranian population.

Toxoplasma gondii and human immunodeficiency virus co-infection in western Iran: A cross sectional study

Objective: To determine Toxoplasma gondii(T. gondii) as a cause of morbidity and mortality in human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) infected patients by ELISA method and to investigate toxoplasmosis-associated risk factors. Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted with 385 patients with HIV/AIDS referred to the behavior disease consultation center in Kermanshah, Iran between May 2012 and June 2013. Anti-Toxoplasma IgG and IgM antibodies were measured by using the ELISA method. Also, the relationship between the infection and age, gender, education, occupation, antiretroviral status, CD4+ cell counts and some other factors of the patients were assessed. P<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results:Among the HIV-positive patients, 40.8%(157/358) and 2.6%(10/358) patients were positive for anti-T. gondii IgG and IgM antibodies, respectively. The mean CD4+ count in the patients with HIV was 327 cells/μL. A significant correlation was observed between the toxoplasmosis infections with the age group(P<0.05). Nevertheless, no statistically significant difference was found between gender, living area, educational level, occupational, marital status, antiretroviral status, prophylaxis, CD4+ cell count and toxoplasmosis. Conclusions: This study revealed that the patients with HIV infection were at the high risk of developing toxoplasmosis disease especially those patients who do not receive antiretroviral therapy and prophylaxis. The development and use of the effectiveness-based guidelines for controlling and the prevention reactivation of the latent T. gondii infection is required.

Effect of tranexamic acid on the treatment of patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding: A double-blinded randomized controlled clinical trial

Objective:To determine the efficacy of tranexamic acid(TXA)in the management of acute upper gastrointestinal(GI)bleeding.Methods:A total of 70 patients with acute upper GI bleeding were included in this double-blinded randomized controlled clinical trial from September 2018 to December 2018.Patients were divided into the control group(received fluid therapy and intravenous infusion of pantoprazole,35 cases)and the TXA group(received intravenous TXA besides the treatment of control group,35 cases).Rebleeding,admission duration,and need for blood transfusion were compared between the two groups.Results:Fifteen patients(42.9%)in the TXA group and 10 patients(28.6%)in the control group stayed in hospital for more than 3 days during their admission(P=0.21).Rebleeding occurred in 8 patients(22.9%)and 5 patients(14.3%)of the TXA group and the control group,respectively(P=0.35).More patients in the TXA group(21 cases,60%)received blood transfusion than the control group(8 cases,22.9%)(P=0.02).Conclusions:TXA did not improve the outcome of patients with acute upper GI bleeding.

Determination of Amitraz in the Honey Samples by Dispersive Liquid-Liquid Microextraction Followed by Gas Chromatography—Flame Ionization Detection

Dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) followed by gas chromatography–flame ionization detection (GC-FID), as a simple, rapid and efficient method, was developed for the determination of amitraz in honey samples. This method involves the use of an appropriate mixture of the extraction and disperser solvents for the formation of a cloudy solution in 5.0 mL aqueous sample containing amitraz. After extraction, phase separation was performed by centrifugation and the concentrated amitraz in the sedimented phase was determined by gas chromatography—flame ionization detection (GC-FID). Some important parameters such as the type and volume of extraction and disperser solvents, and the effect of pH and salt on the extraction recovery of amitraz were investigated. Under the optimum conditions (13 μL of carbon tetrachloride as an extraction solvent, 1 mL of acetonitrile as a disperser solvent, no salt addition and pH 6) preconcentration factor and the extraction recovery were 955 and 95.5%, respectively. The linear range was 0.01 - 1.0 mg?kg–1 and the limit of detection was 0.0015 mg?kg–1. The relative standard deviation (RSD, n = 4) for 0.1 mg?kg–1 of amitraz was 3.2%. The recoveries of amitraz from honey samples at the spiking levels of 0.1 mg?kg-1 were 78.8 and 98.2%. The results indicated that DLLME is an efficient technique for the extraction of amitraz in honey samples.

Rapid and Continuous Extraction of Methyl Red from Wastewater Using Counter Current Chromatography

A new prototype and simple low speed counter current chromatography (LSCCC) has been fabricated and a laboratory work has been carried out for rapid and continuous removal of methyl red from wastewater using xylene as an extractant. The distribution ratio (D) and percentage of recoveries were calculated. The optimum concentration for extraction of methyl red was in the range of 2 × 10-4 to 8 × 10-4 mol·L-1. Maximum extraction achieved at pH range of 2 to 4.5. Various dye concentrations and solvent effects were studied to optimized conditions. It was shown that when the ratio of the organic phase to aqueous phase increased to more than 3:1, the striping efficiency decreased sharply. The experiments were carried out for 5 times and the highest extraction achieved was 99.8 per cent by two-solvent system LSCCC in just 5 minutes. Real wastewater samples were analyzed and the efficiency of the technique was compared with liquid-liquid extraction (LLE). In practice it was shown that although both techniques are rapid, the efficiency of the LSCCC is much better than LLE.

Association between community-acquired pneumonia and platelet indices: A case-control study

Objective:To examine whether the platelet index would be applicable for the diagnosis of community-acquired pneumonia(CAP).Methods:In this study,64 CAP patients(the case group)and 68 healthy children(the control group)were included from 2017 to 2018.Baseline variables were recorded including total white blood cells,neutrophils,lymphocytes,red blood cells,platelet,mean platelet volume,platelet distribution width,erythrocyte sedimentation rate,and C-reactive protein,and compared between the case group and the control group.The cutoff value,sensitivity,and specificity of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio,platelet,neutrophils,lymphocytes,and platelet larger cell ratio were calculated by receiver-operating characteristic curves.Results:The median platelet count of the case group and the control group were(411.09±67.40)mm3 and(334.48±78.15)mm3,respectively(P=0.000).The median neutrophil count of the case group was higher than that of the control group,while the lymphocyte level of the case group was lower.Differences in other variables including the mean platelet volume,platelet distribution width,C-reactive protein,and erythrocyte sedimentation rate were not statistically significant between the two groups.Conclusions:Due to the different levels of platelet,neutrophil and lymphocyte indices in the case and the control group,these indices can be used simultaneously for the diagnosis of CAP.
