Prediction of Strength Properties of Soft Soil Considering Simple Soil Parameters

Cohesion is an important soil strength parameter for the overall structure and quality of building foundations as well as slope stability. For a civil engineering project, cohesion (c) can be determined directly from mainly unconfined compression tests, direct shear tests, and triaxial tests of soil. However, it’s quite challenging to collect soil samples as there are time and cost constraints, as well as a diversity of soil deposits. Hence, this research aims to demonstrate a simplified method in order to determine the strength parameter of cohesive soil. Here, we propose an alternative solution adopting statistical correlations and machine learning techniques to establish correlations between the liquid limit, plastic limit, moisture content and %fine of soil with the strength parameter. In laboratory testing, these parameters can be obtained easily and these tests are relatively simple, quick to perform and also comparatively inexpensive. Hence, several test results were used from 100 boreholes which were soft soil or silty clay-type soil. Using the collected in-situ and lab test results of soil samples, a Multiple Linear Regression (MLR), Random Forest Regression (RFR) and Machine Learning (ML) model will be developed to establish a relationship between cohesion and the available test results. In order to assess the performances of both models, several performance indicators like: correlation coefficient (R2), mean squared error (MSE), root mean square error (RMSE), and mean average error (MAE) will be used. These correlation coefficients will be used to demonstrate the prediction capacity and accuracy of both models. It should be noted that this approach will substitute the conventional testing required for strength parameters, which is both expensive and time-consuming.

Flexural Strength and Load-Deflection Behaviour of Hybrid Thermoset Composites of Wood and Canola Biopolymers

The study aims to incorporate cellulosic canola(Brassica napus L.)biopolymers with wood biomass to increase flexural strength more than wood fraction alone.A facile fabrication process-at ambient temperature-is employed for ease of producing two different sets of bio-composites utilizing unsaturated polyester resin:pristine composite structures of 100%wood and hybrid composite structures of a canola-wood *** curing process is accompanied by methyl ethyl ketone peroxide(MEKP).Besides the lightweight feature,the hybrid composite structures exhibit maximum flexural strength up to 59.6 and 89.58 MPa at 2.5 and 5%fibre polymer fraction,outperforming the pristine wood composites(49.25 MPa).Also,the bending behaviours of the composite structures are illustrated by the load-deflection curves and the associated SEM micrographs display their fractured and debonded surface at the *** novel canola fibre benefits from its inherent hollow architecture,facilitating an excellent strength to weight ratio for the thermoset ***,canola displays a fibre diameter and density of 79.80(±41.31)μm and 1.34(±0.0014)g/cc,contributing effectively towards the flexure performance and high packing *** breaking tenacity(13.31±4.59 g-force/tex)and tensile strength(174.93±60.29)of canola fibres are comparable to other bast *** synergy among fibre diameters,density and break-ing tenacity creates a good interphase to successfully transfer the external compressive load from the resin matrix to the ***,the two-parameter Weibull distribution model is applied for predicting the failure and reliability probability of composite specimens against a wide range of compressive ***,prioritized SWOT factors have been summa-rized associated with the prospects and key challenges of canola biopolymers-an attempt to strategize the planning and decision-making process for a potential business *** introduction of canola into the pla

Status of Renal and Liver Function in Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) Patients of Chattogram, Bangladesh Treated with Methotrexate (MTX)

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disorder that is usually manifested as inflammation in multiple joints and several extra-articular symptoms, involving the liver, kidney, eye, skin, blood, blood vessels, heart, lungs, nervous system, and other organs. Methotrexate (MTX) is the anchor drug that treats RA. As renal and liver abnormalities are more common during disease conditions as well as during the treatment period, we tried to find out if there is any impact of MTX in these organs during the treatment of RA patients. Once the disease complications are developed, it is quite difficult to reverse the disease, and treatment in this situation is not very effective. Consequently, patients suffer a lot. So, early evaluation of renal and liver function is essential for the treatment of RA patients and it might also help prevent different complications which are usually very frequently observed. This was a cross-sectional study. A total of 150 RA patients treated with MTX were evaluated for the study where female and male respondents were 115 and 35 respectively. In this study, we found that 82% of RA patients had creatinine levels ≤ 1.1 mg/dL although the normal range of serum creatinine is below 1.4 mg/dL. Usually, a 15% increase in Serum creatinine level from the baseline is considered renal impairment. We found 4% of such cases. Moreover, 2% of RA patients had creatinine levels above the normal range of 1.4 mg/dL and those patients were hypertensive as well. So, a total (4 + 2 = 6)% had renal impairments. Among them, 5% had diabetes mellitus. On the other hand, the ultrasonogram (USG) of RA patients with kidney disease showed signs of renal parenchymal disease and 3% of RA patients having renal problems whose serum creatinine level was within the normal range showed signs of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Magnetic properties of Sn-substituted Ni-Zn ferrites synthesized from nano-sized powders of NiO, ZnO, Fe2O3, and SnO2

A series of Ni0.6-x/2Zn0.4-x/2SnxFe2O4(x = 0.0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2, and 0.3)(NZSFO) ferrite composities have been synthesized from nano powders using a standard solid state reaction technique. The spinel cubic structure of the investigated samples has been confirmed by x-ray diffraction(XRD). The magnetic properties such as saturation magnetization(Ms),remanent magnetization(Mr), coercive field(Hc), and Bohr magneton(μ) are calculated from the hysteresis loops. The value of Msis found to decrease with increasing Sn content in the samples. This change is successfully explained by the variation of A-B interaction strength due to Sn substitution in different sites. The compositional stability and quality of the prepared ferrite composites have also been endorsed by the fairly constant initial permeability(μ’) over a wide range of frequency. The decreasing trend of μ’ with increasing Sn content has been observed. Curie temperature TChas been found to increase with the increase in Sn content. A wide spread frequency utility zone indicates that the NZSFO can be considered as a good candidate for use in broadband pulse transformers and wide band read-write heads for video recording. The composition of x = 0.05 shows unusual results and the possible reason is also mentioned with the established formalism.

A model of seasonal foliage dynamics of the subtropical mangrove species Rhizophora stylosa *** at the northern limit of its distribution

Background： Progress of forest production in response to the environment requires a quantitative understanding of leaf area development. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the dynamics of seasonal crown foliage in order to understand the productivity of mangroves, which play an important role in the subtropical and tropical coastlines of the world. Method： Crown foliage dynamics of the mangrove Rhizophora styloso were studies to reveal patterns of leaf recruitment, survival and seasonal leaf area growth. Results： Flushing of leaves occurred throughout the year, but both flushing and leaf area growth pattern of leaves varied with season. Maximum flushing occurred in summer, but leaf areas did not differ significantly with season. The half-expansion period is longer, and the intrinsic rate of increase was lower in winter. Summer flushed leaves grew faster at their initial stage and reached their maximum area over a shorter period of time. The difference in temperature and air vapor pressure deficit （VPD） between summer and winter contributed to the present dynamics of foliage patterns. The mean leaf longevity was estimated to be 13.1 month. The crown foliage area was almost stable throughout the year. Conclusions： Homeostatic control of the crown foliage area may be accompanied by the existence of ecophysiological mechanisms in R. stylosa. Integrating crown foliage dynamics into forest models represents an important step towards incorporating physiological mechanisms into the models for predicting growth responses to environmental changes and for understanding the complex responses of tree growth and litter production.

Prevalence of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) among Healthcare Workers Following COVID-19 Pandemic in Jazan Region, KSA

Background: COVID-19 was declared a worldwide pandemic by the World Health Organization in 2020. Many pieces of research have been published on the virus’s pattern and transmission routes, and a few studies have been published on its psychological repercussions for the general public and health care workers in particular. We aimed in this study to figure out the impact of COVID-19 pandemic on the mental health of health care workers in the Jazan region and compare it to non-health care workers. Results: There were 221 participants in this study conducted in the Jazan region KSA, during the first part of 2022. 117 participants were non-HCWs (Health Care Workers) and 104 participants were HCWs. 31.7% of HCWs had high score of PTSD symptoms which may suppress their immunity, PTSD was a clinical concern in 12.5%, 6.7% had probable PTSD, and 49% had no PTSD. The average PTSD score in HCWs was 26.14. In contrast, the great majority of non-HCWs (69.2%) had no PTSD;PTSD was a clinical concern in 16.2%, 11.1% had a score indicating PTSD had the potential for immunosuppression, and 3.4% had probable PTSD. Conclusion: The COVID-19 pandemic did not affect just those who were infected with the virus, nor was it restricted to the mental health of those afflicted;rather, the influence expanded until it reached the general public and, in particular, those who had contact with patients, such as health care workers. As a result, mental health investigation, follow-up, and therapy are required to preserve the mental health of health care workers as well as the general population.

In Vitro Propagation of Three Strawberry Varieties and Field Evaluation

A study was done to produce a rapid in vitro propagation of three strawberry genotypes and tested in the field under Bangladeshi circumstances. Festival, RABI-3, and Neho strawberry genotypes’ runner tips were cultivated in vitro to induce root induction and multiple shoot proliferation. MS (Murashige and Skoog) media that were basally containing three different concentrations at 1.0, 1.5, and 2.0 of BA (6-benzyl adenine), KIN (6-furfuryl amino purine), or GA3 (gibberellic acid) at 0.5 mg/L increasing tips of the runner was attained. The culture grew on the medium provided with 1.5 mg/L 6-benzyl adenine and 0.5 mg/L 6-furfuryl amino acid to increase shoot at the best level. Micro-cuttings were rooted on MS media at half strength combined with 0.5 mg/L - 1.5 mg/L IBA (indole butyric acid) or IAA (indole acetic acid). IBA attained 4 - 9 roots and 91% - 96% rooting at 1.0 mg/L. The resulting plantlets grew into hardy plants and took root in the earth. The genotype festival had the highest response rate, followed by RABI-3 and Neho.

A New Surgical Technique of Biliary Drainage

Introduction: Roux-en-Y Hepatico-jejunostomy is the standard technique of biliary reconstruction after excision of choledochal cyst. Here the author describes a new surgical technique of biliary reconstruction using native gall bladder as biliary conduit. New Surgical Technique: The choledochal cyst is excised as standard technique but gall bladder with its neck is kept in situ. The gall bladder neck is anastomosed with the common hepatic duct stump and gall bladder fundus is anastomosed with the antero-inferior wall of the first part of distal duodenum. Materials & Methods: Eleven patients with choledochal cyst have been operated with the new technique from July 2011 to December 2012 in the city of Dhaka, Bangladesh. Feeding was started from 3rd post-operative day and drain was removed by 7th day unless complicated and they were released from the hospital between 10-15 days. Results: The ages of eleven patients were from 3 months to 11 years. There were 7 females and 4 males. Lump was felt in 3 patients and jaundice was present in 4 patients. Recurrent abdominal pain was present in all patients. They were diagnosed by ultrasonography and MRCP was done in 6 patients only. Prothrombin time was elevated by 10% & 15% in 2 patients. Average operation time was 2 hours and 10 minutes. A 9-year girl died suddenly and unexpectedly on the 5th post-operative day from severe convulsion of unknown origin. One child suffered from prolonged bile leakage and re-explored to repair anastomotic leak. Another patient had a collection near the anastomosis which resolved spontaneously. Discussion: Benefits of the new surgical technique are total absence of Roux-en-Y related intestinal complications. Possible disadvantages are discussed. It is anatomical and physiological. Small incision and less operation time are other benefits which need to be mentioned. Possible disadvantages are discussed.
