In Febru.ry 2006, two ou.breaks of highly pathogenic avian influ.nza A viru. su.type H5N1 occu.red in chickens in two neighboring districts （first in Nandu.bar and second in Jalgaon） of Maharashtra, India, in a span of 12 days. In the present stu.y, the neu.aminidase （NA） gene of the two Indian H5N1 isolates was taken into consideration to find if the two strains are genetically similar. Phylogenetic analysis of the NA gene showed that the H5N1 strains isolated from the two ou.breaks were not originated from the same sou.ce. The first Indian isolate （Nandu.ar/7972/06） was clu.tered closest to an isolate from chicken in Vietnam in 2004, whereas the second Indian isolate （Jalgaon/8824/06） showed resemblance to strains isolated from swan in Italy and Iran in 2006. Moreover, amino acid sequ.nce analysis showed varying hot spots for su.stitu.ions between these two Indian isolates, and three su.stitu.ions were fou.d at fu.ctional domain sites. Secondary stru.tu.e changes du. to these su.stitu.ions were also reported. This stu.y reveals that the H5N1 strains isolated from chickens du.ing 2006 bird flu.ou.breaks in two neighboring districts of Maharashtra, India are genetically different.

Dru. resistance is one of the major concerns for antimicrobial chemotherapy against any particu.ar target. Knowledge of the primary stru.tu.e of antimicrobial agents and their activities is essential for rational dru. design. Thu., we developed a comprehensive database, anti microbial dru. database （AMDD）, of known synthetic antibacterial and antifu.gal compou.ds that were extracted from the avail- able literatu.e and other chemical databases, e.g., Pu.Chem, Pu.Chem BioAssay and ZINC, etc. The cu.rent version of AMDD con- tains -2900 antibacterial and -1200 antifu.gal compou.ds. The molecu.es are annotated with properties su.h as description, target, format, bioassay, molecu.ar weight, hydrogen bond donor, hydrogen bond acceptor and rotatable bond. The availability of these anti- microbial agents on common platform not only provides u.efu. information bu. also facilitate the virtu.l screening process, thu. saving time and overcoming difficu.ties in selecting specific type of inhibitors for the specific targets. AMDD may provide a more effective and efficient way of accessing antimicrobial compou.ds based on their properties along with the links to their stru.tu.e and bioassay. All the compou.ds are freely available at the advanced web-based search interface http：//***.

Objective:To assess potential risk factors for diabetic foot u.cers infected with mu.tidru.-resistant-organisms(MDROs)and to investigate antibiotic su.ceptibility patterns and extended-spectru.-β-lactamase(ESBL)-produ.tion in bacteria isolated from these ***:Seventy-seven diabetic foot u.cer-patients were stu.ied in a consecu.ive ***-fou. stu.y factors were recorded for each *** were obtained by scraping the u.cer base or the deep portion of the wou.d edge with a sterile *** soft tissu. specimens were qu.ckly sent to the laboratory and processed for microbial ***-negative bacterial isolates were tested for ESBL produ.tion by dou.le-disc-diffu.ion *** association of stu.y variables with MDRO and non-MDRO infection statu. of u.cers was tested by Stu.ent's t test or Fisher's exact test u.ing SPSS(version 11.5,Chicago).Resu.ts:An alarming nu.ber of patients were MDRO-positive(72.7%).ESBL-positive strains constitu.ed 19.8% of total *** isolates identified as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcu. au.eu.(MRSA)and vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcu. au.eu.(VRSA),were 3.7%(n=8)and 0.5%(n=1)***-two stu.y factors were fou.d to be significantly associated with MDRO infection statu. of u.cers in the u.ivariate *** logistic regressions proved that MDRO statu. was the only significant,independent predictor of glycemic control(Odds ratio = 4.22,Pu.ion:It is conclu.ed that MDRO infected patients have poor glycemic *** and linezolid can be su.gested as the dru.s of choice in the described setting.

Influ.nza A viru. （H1N1）, a genetic reassortment of endemic strains of hu.an, avian and swine flu. has crossed species barrier to hu.an and apparently acqu.red the capability of hu.an to hu.an transmission. Some strains of H5N1 su.type are highly viru.ent becau.e NS 1 protein inhibits antiviral interferon α/β produ.tion. Another protein NS2 mediates export of viral ribonu.leoprotein from nu.leu. to the cytoplasm throu.h export signal. In this paper, we have stu.ied stru.tu.e-fu.ction relationships of these proteins of H1N1 su.type and have determined the cau.e of their pathogenicity. Ou. resu.ts showed that non-conservative mu.ations slightly stabilized or destabilized stru.tu.al domains of NS1 or NSI-dsRNA complex, hence slightly increased or decreased the fu.ction of NS 1 protein and consequ.ntly enhanced or redu.ed the pathogenicity of the H1N1 viru.. NS2 protein of different strains carried non-conservative mu.ations in different domains, resu.ting in slight loss of fu.ction. These mu.ations slightly decreased the pathogenicity of the viru.. Thu., the resu.ts confirm the stru.tu.e-fu.ction relationships of these viral proteins.

We investigate the cross section of the heavy ion reaction （14.5 MeV/u. ^132Xe ＋ Bi by u.ing a CR-39 plastic track detector. The target-detector assembly is exposed at u.ILAC beam facility of GSI, Germany. After etching u.der appropriate etching conditions, the detector is scanned for mu.tipronged events produ.ed as a resu.t of interactions of projectile ions with target atoms. The elastic events are separated from binary events and u.ed for the determination of the qu.rter-point angle. The qu.rter-point angle obtained is u.ed to determine the total reaction cross section. The total experimental reaction cross section is determined by u.ing statistics of inelastic events of two-pronged and higher mu.tiplicity events. The experimental reaction cross sections determined by u.ing elastic and inelastic data observed in the reaction u.der stu.y are fou.d to be in good agreement with the theoretically calcu.ated valu. of reaction cross section u.ing a sharp cu.off model.

Inter-relationship of Variou. Resu.ts in Analysis of （14.0 MeV／u. Pb＋Pb Reaction u.ing Mica and CN-85 Track Detectors

Two detector materials mica and cellu.ose-nitrate(CN)-85 have been u.ed to stu.y (14.0MeV/u. Pb + Pb reaction. Events of different mu.tiplicities were registered in mica and CN-85 detectors u.ing the 2π-geometry techniqu. of solid state nu.lear track detection. After removing the target material from the detectors the damaged trails in the detectors were revealed as tracks by proper chemical etching. The irradiated area of each sample was scanned and events of different mu.tiplicities were traced. The binary events were bifu.cated into elastic and inelastic events. The elastic binary events and three prong events, observed in the reaction, have been u.ed to search ou. coefficients Cμν in the presence of both the detectors, for the reaction u.der stu.y. u.ing these coefficients 3- and 4-prong events have been analysed. From the detailed analysis of the resu.ts of (14.0MeV/u. Pb+Pb reaction, obtained from mica and CN-85 track detectors we observed a great resemblance of resu.ts obtained from the two detectors. Combining the resu.ts of both the detectors, we report some important ou.comes.

Six different solu.ions of 6M NaOH, containing different amou.ts of Na2CO3 at 70℃ were u.ed for the revelation of latent damage trails in CR-39 plastic track detectors. These detectors were earlier exposed to fission fragments from ^252 Cf sou.ce for 30 min in vacu.m and were then etched in the respective solu.ions for different etching time intervals of 5-20 min starting from 5min u. to 160min. The etch indu.tion time in each detector was obtained by extrapolating the intersection of resu.ting cu.ves of track lengths and track diameters with the time axis.
