Background:Acre has reported the highest incidence of American cutaneous leishmaniasis(ACL)in Brazil in recent *** present study seeks to identify high and low risk agglomerations of ACL in space and space-time during the period from 2007 to 2013 in Acre,and also to characterize the occurrence of the disease in time and according to sociodemographic ***:This is an ecological study,the study population of which consisted of autochthonous ACL cases notified in the municipalities of Acre by an epidemiological surveillance *** statistics of saTscan^(TM)software were used to identify spatial and space-time *** addition,the cases were characterized by sex,age,home situation(in a rural or urban area),and temporal ***:Acre reported an incidence rate of 12.4 cases per 10000 inhabitant-years in the study period,with the rates varied greatly(standard deviation of 21.8)among their 22 *** agglomeration of high risk and three of low risk were detected in space and *** of the five micro-regions of Acre presented a stationary temporal *** profile of transmission varied according to the *** speaking,the disease occurred more often among young people,those of male gender,and those living in rural ***:Acre has stood out within the Brazilian national context due to its high rates of ACL incidence in the central region of the Acre *** high rates in the micro-region of Brasileia are related to the disease’s intra/peridomiciliary occurrence,and it would seem that the municipality of sena Madureira is approaching a transmission pattern similar to that of *** other micro-regions,the profile of the disease’s transmission is mainly related to the forest/sylvatic cycle of ACL.

Plant growth and nutrient use efficiency of two native Fabaceae species for mineland revegetation in the eastern Amazon

The primary challenge of mineland revegetation is the establishment of species able to cope with low availability of nutrients,especially in steep slopes such as of mine *** evaluated plant growth response and nutrient use efficiency(NUE)of two promising native Fabaceae species(Dioclea apurensis—liana from metalliferous savannas;Bauhinia longipedicellata—tree from Amazon rainforest)from the Caraja´s Mineral Province,eastern *** were grown separately in 2-kg pots filled with mining *** were fertilized with nitrogen,phosphorus,potassium(NPK),lime,and *** results showed increments on growth of both species when nutrients were applied to the mining *** showed increases in leaf area,plant height,stem diameter,and shoot dry mass production when NPK or NPK?micronutrients were applied,while *** was responsive to application of NPK?lime or NPK?lime?***,*** showed higher NUE than ***,especially at the lowest doses of N,P and *** findings may indicate a substantial advantage of *** for mineland revegetation,as this species may require lower nutrient inputs,being,therefore,a more sustainable way to revegetate degraded areas.

BACKGROUND The generation of induced pluripotent stem cells(iPsC)has been a game-changer in translational and regenerative medicine;however,their large-scale applicability is still hampered by the scarcity of accessible,safe,and reproducible *** porcine model is a large biomedical model that enables translational applications,including gene editing,long term in vivo and offspring analysis;therefore,suitable for both medicine and animal *** To reprogramme in vitro into pluripotency,and herein urine-derived cells(UDCs)were isolated from porcine *** The UDCs were reprogrammed in vitro using human or murine octamer-binding transcription factor 4(OCT4),sRY-box2(sOX2),Kruppel-like factor 4(KLF4),and C-MYC,and cultured with basic fibroblast growth factor(bFGF)*** characterize the putative porcine iPsCs three clonal lineages were submitted to immunocytochemistry for alkaline phosphatase(AP),OCT4,sOX2,NANOG,TRA181 and ssEA 1 *** transcripts related to the pluripotency(OCT4,sOX2 and NANOG)were analyzed via reverse transcription quantitative realtime polymerase chain reaction in different time points during the culture,and all three lineages formed embryoid bodies(EBs)when cultured in suspension without bFGF *** The UDCs were isolated from swine urine samples and when at passage 2 submitted to in vitro *** of putative iPsCs were obtained only from UDCs transduced with the murine factors(mOsKM),but not from human factors(hOsKM).Three clonal lineages were isolated and further cultured for at least 28 passages,all the lineages were positive for AP detection,the OCT4,sOX2,NANOG markers,albeit the immunocytochemical analysis also revealed heterogeneous phenotypic profiles among lineages and passages for NANOG and ssEA1,similar results were observed in the abundance of the endogenous transcripts related to pluripotent *** the clonal lineages when cultured in suspension without

Classification of the Juturnaíba Dam: Potential Risk and Damage

A Dam safety Program aims to reduce the risks to human life, property, and the environment from dam related hazards. In Brazil, despite of the contemporary law about dam safety, there is still no cadastral information nor the classification of risk and associated potential damage to all dams. Besides that, the recent disaster caused by the failure of the Fund?o dam, located in Mariana city, Minas Gerais state, is an issue that aggravates the urgency of preventive measures and plans for disaster action. The present study proposes to classify the Juturnaíba dam, which maintains the largest reservoir for water supply in the state of Rio de Janeiro, southeast region of Brazil. It was sought to analyze the risks and potential damage associated with the dam, in accordance with two classifications: one from the Brazilian Dams Committee and the other from the National Water Resources Council. It was possible to conclude that the Juturnaíba dam potentially presents high risk and associated high rates of damage, both regarding losses of human lives and regarding environmental and socioeconomic impacts. This is mainly due to the poor state of conservation that it currently presents. It is recommended that future studies should assess the slope stability of the earth dam, and that repair work should be implemented on the degraded concrete structures, with recuperation or installation of instruments that would enable monitoring of possible movement of the earth dam.

Enamel microabrasion: An overview of clinical and scientific considerations

superficial stains and irregularities of the enamelare generally what prompt patients to seek dental intervention to improve their smile. These stains or defects may be due to hypoplasia, amelogenesis imperfecta, mineralized white spots, or fluorosis, for which enamel microabrasion is primarily indicated. Enamel microabrasion involves the use of acidic and abrasive agents, such as with 37% phosphoric acid and pumice or 6% hydrochloric acid and silica, applied to the altered enamel surface with mechanical pressure from a rubber cup coupled to a rotatory mandrel of a lowrotation micromotor. If necessary, this treatment can be safely combined with bleaching for better esthetic results. Recent studies show that microabrasion is a conservative treatment when the enamel wear is minimal and clinically imperceptible. The most important factor contributing to the success of enamel microabrasion is the depth of the defect, as deeper, opaque stains, such as those resulting from hypoplasia, cannot be resolved with microabrasion, and require a restorative approach. surface enamel alterations that result from microabrasion, such as roughness and microhardness, are easily restored by saliva. Clinical studies support the efficacy and longevity of this safe and minimally invasive treatment. The present article presents the clinical and scientific aspects concerning the microabrasion technique, and discusses the indications for and effects of the treatment, including recent works describing microscopic and clinical evaluations.

Hydrological Processes and Climate Change in Hydrographic Regions of Brazil

The objective of this work is to assess the impacts of IPCC AR5 climate change scenarios on water resources and hydrological processes across the entire Brazilian territory. Hydrological simulations are carried out in total drainage area of about 11,535,645 kmsup>2sup> and average stream flow of about 272,460 msup>3sup>/s. The study area consists of different climates and land covers such as the Amazon Forest, Northeast semiarid, Brazilian savannah, Pantanal wetlands and temperate climate in the south. The atmospheric forcing to drive the large-scale hydrological model MGB-IPH is derived from the downscaling of two global climate models, HadGEM2-Es and MIROC5, by the Eta Regional Climate Model, at 20 km resolution. The Eta model provided the downscaling of the baseline (1961-1990) and three time-slices (2011-2040, 2041-2070 and 2071-2099). These projections adopted two emission scenarios, the RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5. The change in the average and extremes of precipitation, evapotranspiration, rates of river discharge and soil moisture were assessed. The simulations showed the response of the hydrographic regions due to change of precipitation and potential evapotranspiration in the scenarios. Water availability decreases in almost the entire study area (exception for the south) and the major basins for hydroelectric power generation are affected. The Northwest, Amazon and a small area along the Northeast Atlantic coast exhibited intensification of the extremes discharges, where the anomaly is positive for high-flow (Qsub>10sub>) and negative for low-flow (Qsub>95sub>). The results highlight the most climatic sensitive regions in Brazil in terms of hydrological variables and water resources.

Analysis of Participation and Performance in Half Marathon Runners

Endurance running became a mass phenomenon throughout the 1980s around the world. Therefore, we wanted to investigate the participation and performance trends of runners in a half marathon. We analyzed a database containing the number of people who signed up and finished as well as age group, gender, placement, and runtime for all runners from a half marathon between 2003 and 2009. More than 35,000 runners participated in the half marathon, with an 80% increase in total participation during the 7 years analyzed. We verified that the annual participation increased, with a greater increase seen in female and middle-aged people of both genders, and runtimes of last finishers increased gradually in most of the age groups and both genders. However, while the number of people who signed up increased, there was a decrease in the number of participants who finished resulting in a negative correlation. This finding in association with the decrease in the percentage of finishers shows that each year the fitness deteriorated in both genders and across all ages.
