Intensification of photocatalytic decomposition of water by ultrasound

Photocatalysis of water with and without ultrasound was studied using rGO supported CdS catalyst utilizing visible light. A higher hydrogen production was observed when ultrasound was used. This is attributed to a faster removal of bubbles of hydrogen from the surface of photocatalyst due to the mechanical energy associated with ultrasound overcoming surface tension. It has been further reported that the rate of hydrogen production decreased with time due to reversible deactivation of catalyst. This has been attributed to decrease in rate of hydrogen desorption with time.

Geochemistry and hydrocarbon source rock potential of shales from the Palaeo-Mesoproterozoic Vindhyan Supergroup, central India

With increase in shale gas exploration, inorganic and organic geochemical investigations of shale have become extremely important. Here, we explore the six argillaceous (shale) intervals (Arangi, Koldaha, Rampur, Bijaygarh, Rewa and Sirbu shale) from Son valley sector, Vindhyan Basin with an aim to understand provenance conditions, palaeoclimate, tectonic setting and hydrocarbon generation potential. Whole rock geochemistry indicates Vindhyan sediments derived from felsic source(s) except for Sirbu shale that indicates additional influx of mafic rocks with differentiated felsic source. A comparative study of Vindhyan shale rare earth elements (REEs) points to Mahakoshals and Chhotanagpur gneissic complex (CGC) as probable sediment provenance for Vindhyan sediments. CIA analysis, after necessary corrections for K-metasomatism, suggests evolution in weathering and palaeoclimate indicating a transformation from moderate weathering conditions with warm and humid climate during lower Vindhyan deposition to intense weathering conditions with hot and humid climate during upper Vindhyan deposition. Trace (La/Y vs. Sc/Cr) and REE analysis indicates passive margin setting for Vindhyan sediments whereas a wide range spanning passive to active continental margin setting is also inferred using (Th-Sc-Zr/10) and (Th–La-Sc) ternary diagrams. However, these tectonic discriminant diagrams lack in explaining rift- or sag-related origin of any intracratonic basin such as the Vindhyan Basin. The total organic carbon (TOC) content in Vindhyan shales ranges from 0.29% to 8.44%. The thermally liberated hydrocarbon (S1) values range from 0.01 to 0.18 mg HC/g rock (milligram hydrocarbon per gram of rock sample), whereas hydrocarbon from cracking of the kerogen (S2) shows values ranging from 0.04 to 0.47 mg HC/g rock. Thermodynamic properties and phase diagram of quark matter within non-extensive Polyakov chiral SU(3)quark mean field model

In the present study,we applied Tsallis non-extensive statistics to investigate the thermodynamic properties and phase diagram of quark matter in the Polyakov chiral SU(3)quark mean field *** this model,the properties of the quark matter were modified through the scalar fieldsσ,ζ,δ,χ,vector fieldsω,ρ,ϕ,and Polyakov fieldsΦandΦ¯at finite temperature and chemical ***-extensive effects were introduced through a dimensionless parameter q,and the results were compared to those of the extensive case(q→1).In the non-extensive case,the exponential in the Fermi-Dirac(FD)function was modified to a q-exponential *** influence of the q parameter on the thermodynamic properties,pressure,energy,and entropy density,as well as trace anomaly,was *** speed of sound and specific heat with non-extensive effects were also ***,the effect of non-extensivity on the deconfinement phase transition as well as the chiral phase transition of u,d,and s quarks was *** found that the critical end point(CEP),which defines the point in the(T−μ)phase diagram where the order of the phase transition changes,shifts to a lower value of temperature,TCEP,and a higher value of chemical potential,μCEP,as the non-extensivity is increased,that is,q>1.

Herbal medicines are popular natural medicines that have been used for *** use of alternative medicines continues to expand rapidly across the *** World Health Organization suggests that quality assessment of natural medicines is essential for any therapeutic or health care applications,as their therapeutic potential varies between different geographic origins,plant species,and *** of herbal medicines based on a limited number of secondary metabolites is not an ideal *** quality should be considered based on a complete metabolic profile,as their pharmacological activity is not due to a few specific secondary metabolites but rather a larger group of bioactive compounds.A holistic and integrative approach using rapid and nondestructive analytical strategies for the screening of herbal medicines is required for robust *** this study,a rapid and effective quality assessment system for geographical traceability,species,and variety-specific authenticity of the widely used natural medicines turmeric,Ocimum,and Withania somnifera was investigated using Fourier transform near-infrared(FT-NIR)spectroscopy-based metabolic *** different geographical origins of turmeric,five different Ocimum species,and three different varieties of roots and leaves of Withania somnifera were studied with the aid of machine learning *** good discrimination(R^(2)>0.98,Q^(2)>0.97,and accuracy=1.0)with sensitivity and specificity of 100%was achieved using this metabolic fingerprinting *** study demonstrated that FT-NIR-based rapid metabolic fingerprinting can be used as a robust analytical method to authenticate several important medicinal herbs.

等离子体面壁材料(Plasma Facing Materials,PFM)可显著影响磁约束聚变装置的约束性能。在聚变装置放电过程中,高粒子流和能流会持续轰击等离子体面壁材料,侵蚀偏滤器靶板,进而产生各种杂质。这些杂质不断聚芯,最终将严重污染燃料等离子体、降低装置约束性能,甚至中止放电。因此,寻找一种能够承受高粒子流和能流轰击的、适合连续放电并且只产生较少杂质粒子的等离子体面壁材料,是一项必要的艰巨的任务。研究表明,锂(Li)涂覆材料和液态锂材料被用作第一壁或偏滤器等离子体面壁组件(Plasma Facing Components,PFC)时,能够表现出优良的性能,例如,调控边缘局域模(Edge Localized modes,ELMs),增加等离子体约束性能和降低溅射产率。偏滤器靶板上的锂涂层能够减少等离子体面壁材料表面产生的尘埃、降低能量再循环,从而降低芯部等离子体的温度梯度、增加能量约束时间。因此,针对锂与等离子体相互作用进行严格的边缘等离子体动力学定量和定性分析,是聚变等离子体研究的重要组成部分。本文采用1D3V粒子云网格(Particle-In-Cell,PIC)模型和蒙特卡罗碰撞(MCC)包VSim——模型包含带电粒子和中性粒子间的各种相互作用,研究了锂偏滤器靶板对边缘等离子体的影响。我们将等离子体源——氘等离子体定义在两个锂偏滤器靶板之间,使整个模拟区域表征刮削层(Scrape-off Layer,SOL)。模型中包含的物理化学过程包括氘离子轰击锂壁面产生锂杂质的反应,偏滤器靶板处的粒子再循环和二次电子发射(Second Electron Emitting,SEE)。本文研究表明,等离子体中带电粒子和中性粒子的输运将直接影响偏滤器区的等离子体特性。由于等离子体在与锂杂质、再循环产生的氘的中性原子和分子的各种碰撞中失去能量,锂偏滤器区域的等离子体温度以及入射到靶板上的粒子流和热流将显著降低。

Clinical anatomy of the tympanic nerve: A review

The tympanic （Jacobson’s） nerve is a useful anatomi-cal structure in the middle ear with both practical and physiological functions extending beyond its origin. The paper reviews its clinical anatomy in adults and its surgical signifcance. English language articles from 5 major databases and Google scholar search engine were used to identify papers outlining the anatomy of the tympanic nerve, associated pathology and surgical relevance. In the majority of cases the tympanic nerve arises from the inferior ganglion of the glossopharyn-geal nerve traversing through the tympanic canaliculus into the middle ear. On the promontory it coalesces with sympathetic fbres from the carotid chain forming the tympanic plexus which has individual variability. Functionally, as well as giving off parasympathetic fbres to the parotid gland via the lesser petrosal nerve, it is a useful anatomical landmark for cochlear implantation. The surgical importance of the tympanic nerve is not only restricted to middle ear surgery; it also extends to salivary gland disorders. The tympanic nerve remains clinically relevant to the modern otolaryngologist and as such a detailed understanding of its anatomy is crucial.

A Systematic Review to Explore the Factors Related to Parent to Child Transmission of HIV, Survival and Treatment Provision of Children with HIV in India

Introduction: There are a multitude of factors that impact the transmission of HIV from parent to child and the subsequent survival of infected children. Changing dynamics in HIV transmission have led to an increase in the number of children living with HIV in India. This review synthesizes the evidence related to transmission of HIV to children, survival and treatment provision among children living with HIV. Methods: A systematic search was conducted in MEDLINE, IndMed, Web of Science, Google Scholar and major journals related to HIV/AIDS to identify relevant studies published between 1992 and 2015. Inclusion criteria included studies related to parent to child transmission of HIV, treatment of children living with HIV and survival of children living with HIV. One of the authors reviewed the studies and extracted the data in a pre-coded extraction sheet. Results: Thirty-three studies were included in the review. HIV transmission rate from parent to Child who received nevirapine prophylaxis ranged from 2.1% to 27.3%. Extended dose regimen of nevirapine prophylaxis was found to be more effective than the single dose regimen. Adherence to ART ranged from 65% to 95%. Adherence varied depending upon the level of health care facility. Both social and medical factors were associated with non-adherence. CD 4 count at the time of diagnosis and delayed age at HIV diagnosis were important predictors of survival. Conclusion: Shift in policy to provide option B regimen is yielding better results. If the age at diagnosis could be reduced further, it would increase the survival of children living with HIV. The program needs to increase access to the health care facilities.

Improving efficiency and saving money in an otolaryngology urgent referral clinic

A closed loop audit of the ear nose and throat(ENT) urgent referral clinic at a London hospital was conducted assessing the number of patients reviewed,referral source, appropriateness of referral, presenting complaint and assigned follow-up appointments. Data was sourced from clinic letters and the patient appointment system over a 3-mo period. The initial cycle analysed 490 patients and the subsequent cycle 396. The initial audit yielded clinically relevant and cost effective recommendations which were implemented, and the audit cycle was subsequently repeated. The reaudit demonstrated decreased clinic numbers from an average 9.8 to 7.2 patients per clinic, in keeping with ENT United Kingdom guidelines. A 21% decrease in patient follow-up and 13% decrease in inappropriate referrals was achieved. Direct bookings into outpatient clinics decreased by 8%, due to correct referral pathway utilisation. Comparisons of all data sets were found to show statistical significance P < 0.05. We reported a total financial saving of ￡32490 in a period of 3 mo(￡590 per clinic). We demonstrated that simple guidelines, supervision and consultant-led education which are nonlabour intensive can have a significant impact on service provision and cost.
