Backgrounds: Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a classic opportunistic pathogen with innate resistance to many antibiotics and disinfectants. The lung is a main target for colonization and infection by the bacteria either in the context of a chronic, progressively deteriorating infectious and inflammatory pulmonary disease such as cystic fibrosis (CF) or in a more acute setting such as severe pneumonia in immunocompromised patients [1]. Aim and Objectives: To study the prevalence, virulence and the resistance pattern, phenotypic and genotypic characterization of P. aeruginosa from sputum samples. materials and methods: The present study was carried out with a total of 500 clinical sputum samples, which were received from patients, admitted to the various departments of Rajah muthiah medical College & Hospital, Annamalai University, Chidambaram. Result: Of the 500 samples subjected for isolation and identification of P. aeruginosa, 116 (23.20%) were positive. The isolated strains were tested for antibiotic sensitivity patterns. 93.10% of P. aeruginosa showed a maximum sensitivity to Ofloxacin, Norfloxacin and 86.20% of strains were highly resistant to Cefotaxime. The same isolates were also tested for phenotypic characterization of Extended Spectrum of Beta Lactamases by double disc synergy method against Cefotaxime and Clavulanic acid, according to the criteria of Hi-media [2]. Of the resistant strains of P. aeruginosa isolated from sputum, 59% were positive for ESBL. The genotype characterization of ESBL P. aeruginosa showed 40% of CTX-m and 46.66% SHV gene. Conclusion: The present study strongly recommends for further checking of the antibiotic resistant strains of P. aeruginosa for phenotypic characterization of ESBL for effective treatment.

The E. tarda bacterial culture isolated from infected fish, was confirmed by morphological and biochemical characterization. GAPDH gene of 996 bp was amplified from bacterial genomic DNA. GAPDH gene was cloned in pTZ57R/T cloning vector. The positive clone was sequenced. The sequencing result showed very homology with published sequence from pathogenic E. tarda. The sequence (nucleotide and amino acid) divergence values were very low between E. tarda isolates from India (KF142190) and China (HQ697337-38) (Figure 4 and Figure 5). However, the divergence value was high when compared with E. tarda isolates from Japan (AB198939) and this value was higher than the inter-specific divergence value (E. tarda-E. ictaluri, E. tarda-E. coli & E. tarda-Klebsiella species).

BACKGROUND: Neuroendocrine tumors of the ampulla of Vater are extremely rare, and few cases of large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) of the ampulla have been reported. mETHODS: A 48-year-old male with obstructive jaundice was admitted to our hospital. On examination the patient was found to have a periampullary growth and subsequently underwent the Whipple's procedure. RESULTS: Histopathological examination and immunohistochemistry revealed features of LCNEC of the ampulla of Vater. The patient developed multiple liver metastases 6 months after Whipple's procedure. CONCLUSION: LCNEC of the ampulla of Vater is rare and highly aggressive, with a dismal prognosis.

Single crystals of m-Nitroacetanilide (mNAa) were successfully grown by slow evaporation method at a constant temperature 40°C from methanol solution. The solubility studies for mNAa were estimated. The cell dimensions were obtained by single crystal X-ray diffraction (XRD) study. The functional groups have been confirmed using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) analysis. The placement of protons was identified from Nuclear magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (NmR) spectral analysis. UV-visible and fluorescence spectral analyses were carried out for the grown crystals. Thermo gravimetric analysis and differential thermal analysis were carried out to determine the thermal properties of the as grown crystal. The Second Harmonic Generation (SHG) efficiency of mNAa was also determined.

为了了解板内地震的原因和本质,我们系统地研究了它们的共同特征.我们分析了发生于世界范围的29次板内地震(m≥4.5)的各种地质、地球物理和地震的资料,并对比了它们的几何学和地震学参数.结果表明,板内地震是挤压应力状态下板内先存软弱带复活的产物,其挤压应力的方向一般平行于板块运动的绝对方向.我们观察到了两种断层的活动方式:A型地震,主要发生于美国东部、芬罗斯堪的亚、中国东部、西欧和西部非洲,由陡倾断层的走滑运动形成;B型地震,主要见于加拿大东部、澳大利亚以及印度半岛,通常与逆断或正断活动有关.这两种类型地震之间的差异,不是因为它们震源深度的不同,而是由于局部应力场干扰区域应力场的缘故.A型地震的区域应力场主要归因于洋脊推力.在不同地区,应力干扰的方式各不相同,因此,B型地震又可进一步划分为三个亚类:B_1亚类(发生于加拿大东部和芬罗斯堪的亚)、B_2亚类(发生于澳大利亚、印度半岛和巴西中部)和B_3亚类(发生于美国墨西哥湾沿岸),其干扰应力的可能原因分别是冰川减退、板块碰撞产生的板内抵抗力和巨厚沉积物的堆载作用.我们发现A型地震与交汇断层有关,从而支持了Talwani(1988)的交汇模型.A型板内地震与板缘地震有相似之处.
