Influence of geography and climate on patterns of cell size and body size in the lizard Anolis carolinensis

Luminescent cyclometalated iridium(Ⅲ) dipyridoquinoxaline indole complexes as biological probes

Four luminescent cyclometalated iridium(Ⅲ) dipyridoquinoxaline complexes appended with an indole moiety [Ir(N^C)2(N^N)] (PF6) (HN^C = 2-phenylpyridine, Hppy; N^N = 2-(N-(2-(indole-3-acetamido)ethyl)aminocarbonyl)dipyrido[3,2-f:2′,3′-h]quinox- aline, dpqC2indole (1a), N^N = 2-(N-(6-(indole-3-acetamido)hexyl)aminocarbonyl)dipyrido[3,2-f:2′,3′-h]quinoxaline, dpqC6indole (1b); HN^C = 7,8-benzoquinoline, Hbzq, N^N = dpqC2indole (2a), N^N = dpqC6indole (2b)) have been synthesized and characterized. Upon irradiation, all the complexes displayed moderately intense and long-lived luminescence under ambient condi-tions and in 77 K glass. On the basis of the photophysical data, the emission of the complexes has been assigned to an excited state of triplet metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (3MLCT) ((dπ(Ir)→π*(N^N)) character. Cyclic voltammetric studies revealed indole-based and iridium-based oxidations at ca. +1.10 V and +1.24 V vs. SCE, respectively, and ligand-based reductions at ca. -1.07 to-2.29 V vs. SCE. The interactions of the complexes with an indole-binding protein, bovine serum albumin (BSA), have been examined by emission titrations.

3-d visualizations of coastal bathymetry by utilization of airborne TOPSAR polarized data

Multi-frequency C and L bands in the TOPSAR data have been utilized to reconstruct three-dimensional(3-d)bathymetry *** main objective of this study is to utilize fuzzy arithmetic to reduce the errors arising from speckle in synthetic aperture radar(SAR)data when constructing ocean bathymetry from polarized SAR *** doing so,two 3-d surface models,the Volterra algorithm and a fuzzy B-spline(FBS)algorithm,which construct a global topological structure between the data points,were used to support an approximation to the real *** algorithm was used to express the non-linearity of TOPSAR data intensity gradient based on the action balance equation(ABC).In this context,a first-order kernel of Volterra algorithm was used to express ABC *** inverse of Volterra algorithm then performed to simulate 2-d current velocities from CVV and LHH ***,the 2-d continuity equation then used to estimate the water *** order to reconstruct 3-d bathymetry pattern,the FBS has been performed to water depth information which was estimated from 2-d continuity *** best reconstruction of coastal bathymetry of the test site in Kuala Terengganu,Malaysia,was obtained with polarized L and C bands SAR acquired with HH and VV polarizations,*** 10 m spatial resolution of TOPSAR data,bias of0.004 m,the standard error mean of 0.023 m,r2 value of 0.95,and 90%confidence intervals in depth determination was obtained with LHH band.

3-d reconstruction of coastal bathymetry from AIRSAR/POLSAR data

This paper introduces a new method for reconstructing three-dimensional （3d） coastal bathymetry changes from Airborne AIRSAR/POLSAR synthetic aperture data. The new method is based on integration between fuzzy B-spline and Volterra algorithm. Volterra algorithm is used to simulate the ocean surface current from AIRSAR/POLSAR data. Then, the ocean surface current information used as input for continuity equation to estimate the water depths from AIRSAR/POLSAR data. This study shows that 3d ocean bathymetry can be reconstructed from AIRSAR/POLSAR data with root mean square error of ±0.03 m.

Short-Term Response of Soil Respiration to Addition of Chars:Impact of Fermentation Post-Processing and Mineral Nitrogen

The biodegradability of chars derived from pyrolysis and hydrothermal carbonisation(HTC) was studied in short-term dynamic incubation experiments under controlled conditions. Carbon dioxide C(CO2) emissions from soil-char mixtures in combination with solid digestate or mineral nitrogen(N) fertiliser were measured in dynamic chambers for 10 d. Compared to the original material(maize straw), pyrolysis and HTC chars showed significantly lower CO2 emissions and slower decay dynamics; and compared to the soil control, HTC char increased soil respiration to a significant extent, while pyrolysis char did not. The addition of mineral N resulted in a delayed respiration dynamics for HTC char, while the addition of digestate resulted in an increase in the respired CO2 for pyrolysis char and a decrease for HTC char. For the first time, a peculiar two-stage decay kinetics was observed for HTC char,indicating a highly inhomogeneous substrate consisting at least of two C pools.

Formulation of zeolite-mesoporous silica composite catalysts for light olefin production from catalytic cracking

Framework materials such as zeolites and mesoporous silicas are commonly used for many applications, especially catalysis and separation. Here zeolite-mesoporous silica composite catalysts (employing zeolite Y, ZSM-5, KIT-6, SBA-15 and MCM-41 mesoporous silica) were prepared (with different weight percent of zeolite Y and ZSM-5) and assessed for catalytic cracking (using n-heptane, as the model compound at 550 degrees C) with the aim to improve the selectivity/yield of light olefins of ethylene and propylene from n-heptane. Physicochemical properties of the parent zeolites and the prepared composites were characterized comprehensively using several techniques including X-ray diffraction, nitrogen physisorption, scanning electron microscopy, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, pulsed-field gradient nuclear magnetic resonance and thermogravimetric analysis. Catalytic cracking results showed that the ZY/ZSM-5/KIT-6 composite (20:20:60 wt %) achieved a high n-heptane conversion of 85% with approximately 6% selectivity to ethylene/propylene. In contrast, the ZY/ZSM-5/SBA-15 composite achieved a higher conversion of 95% and an ethylene/propylene ratio of 8%, indicating a more efficient process in terms of both conversion and selectivity. Magnetic resonance relaxation analysis of the ZY/ZSM-5/KIT-6 (20:20:60) catalyst confirmed a micro-mesoporous environment that influences n-heptane diffusion and mass transfer. As zeolite Y and ZSM-5 have micropores, n-heptane can move and undergo hydrogen transfer reactions, whereas KIT-6 has mesopores that facilitate n-heptane's accessibility to the active sites of zeolite Y and ZSM-5.

Static strength analysis of dragonfly inspired wings for biomimetic micro aerial vehicles

This article examines the suitability of fabricating artificial, dragonfly-like, wing frames from materials that are commonly used in unmanned aircraft （balsa wood, black graphite carbon fiber and red prepreg fiberglass）. Wing frames made with Type 321 stainless steel are also examined for comparison. The purpose of these wings is for future use in biomimetic micro aerial vehicles （BMAV）. BMAV are a new class of unmanned micro-sized aerial vehicles that mimic flying biolog- ical organisms （like flying insects）. Insects, such as dragonflies, possess corrugated and complex vein structures that are difficult to mimic. Simplified dragonfly-like wing frames were fabricated from these materials and then a nano-composite film was adhered to them, which mimics the membrane of an actual dragonfly. Finite element analysis simulations were also performed and compared to experimental results. The results showed good agreement （less than 10% difference for all cases）. Analysis of these results shows that stainless steel is a poor choice for this wing configuration, pri- marily because of the aggressive oxidation observed. Steel, as well as balsa wood, also lacks flexi- bility. In comparison, black graphite carbon fiber and red prepreg fiberglass offer some structural advantages, making them more suitable for consideration in future BMAV applications.
