Higher prevalence of colon polyps in patients with Barrett’s esophagus:a case-control study

Background and aims:Barrett’s esophagus(BE)and colorectal neoplasms share similar risk *** studies have shown variable prevalence of colon polyps in patients with *** aims were to determine the prevalence and incidence of colon polyps in patients with BE,compared to those without ***:In this case-control study,the study group included patients,aged 50–75 years,with biopsy-proven BE,who underwent colonoscopy at Cleveland Clinic from January 2002 to December *** control group consisted of age-and sex-matched patients who underwent colonoscopy and also an endoscopy with no evidence of BE during the same time *** criteria for both groups were family-or personal previous history of colon cancer or polyps,prior colonic resection,inflammatory bowel disease and familial polyposis *** demographics,comorbidities,medication use and endoscopic and colonoscopic details were collected,including biopsy ***:A total of 519 patients were included in the study;173 patients with BE in the study group and 346 without BE in the control *** age at index colonoscopy was 618 years and 75%of patients were *** index colonoscopy,patients with BE were more likely to have polyps than controls(45%vs 32%,respectively;P=0.003).Patients underwent between one and five colonoscopies during the *** multivariate analysis—after adjusting for age,gender and diabetes—patients with BE were 80%more likely to have any type of polyp,and 50%more likely to have adenomas found during ***:Patients with BE had higher prevalence and incidence of colon *** has important clinical implications for screening and surveillance in BE patients.

Steric Effect of Alkyl Substituted Piperidin-4-one Oximes for Corrosion Control of Mild Steel in H_2SO_4 Medium

Three synthesized piperidin-4-one oximes,3-ethyl-2,6-diphenyl-piperidin-4-one oxime(A),1-methyl-3-isopropyl-2,6-diphenyl-piperidin-4-one oxime(B),and 3-isopropyl-2,6-diphenyl-piperidin-4-one oxime(C),were tested at different concentrations to determine their ability to inhibit corrosion of mild steel in 1 mol.L-1 H2SO4 and measured by a mass loss method(at various temperatures),polarization and impedance measurements,X-ray diffraction(XRD),scanning electron microscopy(SEM) with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDS),and a quantum chemical *** synergistic influence of compounds A,B and C with iodides has also been *** three compounds show good inhibition efficiency in the following order:A>B>*** A,B and C were found to physically adsorb on the surface of mild steel while obeying the Temkin *** measurements indicated that these compounds behave as a mixed mode *** and SEM with EDS studies revealed the formation of a protective barrier on the mild steel surface by these *** electron donating ability of the studied molecules was tested using semi empirical *** studies revealed that the oxime nitrogen,the piperidine moiety,and the phenyl ring assist largely in corrosion *** studies also showed that the steric crowding by the alkyl group in the piperidine ring affects the inhibitor ***,it is interesting to note that all of the studied compounds exhibit synergism with iodide ions.

Microstructures and mechanical properties of nanocrystalline NiTi intermetallics formed by mechanosynthesis

The formulation of nanocrystallinc NiTi shape memory alloys has potential effects in mechanical stimulation and medical im- plantology. The present work elucidates the effect of milling time on the product＇s structural characteristics, chemical composition, and mi- crohardness for NiTi synthesized by mechanical alloying for different milling durations. Increasing the milling duration led to the formation of a nanocrystalline NiTi intermetallic at a higher level. The formation of nanocrystalline materials was directed through cold fusion, fractur- ing, and the development of a steady state, which were influenced by the accumulation of strain energy. In the morphological study, uninter- rupted cold diffusion and fracturing were visualized using transmission electron microscopy. Particle size analysis revealed that the mean particle size was reduced to -93 μm after 20 h of milling. The mechanical strength was enhanced by the formation of a nanocrystalline in- termetallic phase at longer milling time, which was confirmed by the results of Vickers hardness analyses.

Characterization and bacterial toxicity of lanthanum oxide bulk and nanoparticles

This study evaluated the bacterial toxicity of lanthanum oxide micron and nano sized particles using shake flask method against gram-positive （Staphylococcus aureus） and gram-negative （Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa） bacteria. Particle size, morphology and chemical composition were determined using scanning electron microscopy （SEM） and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy （EDS）. Results indicated that lanthanum oxide nanoparticles showed antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, but not against Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It was speculated that lanthanum oxide produced this effect by interacting with the gram-positive bacterial cell wall. Furthermore, lanthanum oxide bulk particles were fotmd to enhance the pyocyanin pigment production in Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

Determination of the chromospheric quiet network element area index and its variation between 2008 and 2011

In general, it is believed that plages and sunspots are the main contribu- tors to solar irradiance. There are small-scale structures on the Sun with intermediate magnetic fields that could also contribute to solar irradiance, but it has not yet been quantified how many of these small scale structures contribute and how much this varies over the solar cycle. We used Ca II K images obtained from the telescope at the Kodaikanal observatory. We report a method to separate the network elements from the background structure and plage regions, and compute the changes in the network element area index during the minimum phase of the solar cycle and part of the as- cending phase of cycle 24. The measured area occupied by the network elements is about 30% and the plages cover less than 1% of the solar disk during the observation period from February 2008 to 2011. During the extended period of minimum activity, it is observed that the network element area index decreases by about 7% compared to the area occupied by the network elements in 2008. A long term study of the network element area index is required to understand the variations over the solar cycle.

Solar Photo Voltaics(known as SPV or PV) is one of the promising Renewable Energy Technologies and its applications are multiplying *** to its inherent merits,fall in prices and with fast depletion of fossil fuel resources,SPV is being looked at as a future alternative *** industry is getting matured and now it is poised for a dramatic *** is predicted that cost reduction through advanced technologies and increased production capacities will make PV to compete with fossil fuels in the years to come. Though PV is highly reliable with a life span of 20 to 30 years,failures and reliability problems associated with BOS components do not bring the required credential to PV what it deserves and reduces the confidence level in the PV end *** there are many reasons attributed to this, lack of trained manpower is one of the primary *** achieve ’Trouble Free’ PV Systems,key factor is the Trained Quality Technical Manpower at every level i.e. manufacturing of modules and subsystems,testing of subsystems,system integration,installation of the PV systems or plants their periodical inspection,maintenance and troubleshooting. While addressing the need for quality technical manpower, this paper proposes the different means for getting the required technical manpower in the area of SPV. Different levels of trained manpower,areas of training, required knowledge and skill competencies at every level as well as the Certification and Accreditation Programs are ***,the paper addresses the roles of PV Industries,Higher Technological Institutions,Engineering Colleges and National Testing Laboratories in building up the required Technical Manpower in the area of Solar Photo Voltaics.
