Arsenobetaine and thio-arsenic species in marine macroalgae and herbivorous animals: Accumulated through trophic transfer or produced in situ?

Arsenobetaine（AB） and thio-arsenoribosides were measured in common macroalgae species（8 phaeophyta, 4 rhodophyta and 2 chlorphyta）, along the Australian south east coast line. As well, arsenic species profiles were measured for two common marine herbivores, the sea urchin Centrostephanus rodgersii and the fish Odax cyanomelas that graze on these macroalgae to understand if trophic transfer of these species would account for their presence in marine herbivores. AB was found in seven of the fourteen macroalgae species investigated but does not contributed significantly to any of the macroalgae arsenic content（0.01-1.2 μg/g）. AB was found in only two of the brown macroalgae and all the red and green macroalgae（with the exception of Corallina officinalis）. Thio-arsenic species were found sporadically, but not in high concentrations in any of the macroalgae *** present in macroalgae is likely to be associated with epiphytic organisms while thio-arsenoribosides are likely to be produced by decaying parts of damaged macroalgae.A laboratory feeding experiment in which the herbivorous gastropod, Austrocochlea constricta, was fed macroalgae containing thio-arsenoribosides for a 24 hr period every three days showed that these are readily accumulated over a short period. Thio-arsenoribosides in herbivores are therefore probably obtained through trophic transfer. Some AB is also obtained through trophic transfer; however, the presence of trimethylated arsonioribosides,a hypothesized precursor of AB formation in herbivores, suggests that some AB is produced within herbivores from the transformation of arsenoribosides accumulated from their diet.

The impact of interphase forces on the modulation of turbulence in multiphase flows

The modulation of turbulence by particles has been rigorously investigated in the literature yielding either a reduction or an enhancement of the turbulent kinetic energy at different spatial length ***,a general description of the turbulence modulation in multiphase flows due to the presence of an interphase force has attracted less *** this paper,we investigate the turbulent modulation for interfacial and fluid-particle flows analytically and numerically,where surface tension and drag define the interphase coupling,*** is shown that surface tension and drag appear as additional production/dissipation terms in the transport equations for the turbulent kinetic energies(TKE),which is of particular importance for the turbulence modelling of multiphase ***,we study the modulation of turbulence in decaying homogenous isotropic turbulence(HIT)for both types of multiphase *** results clearly unveil that in both cases the energy is reduced at large scales,while the small-scale energy is enhanced compared to single-phase ***,at large scales surface tension works against the turbulent eddies and hinders the ejection of droplet from the corrugated *** contrast,at the small scales,the surface tension force and the velocity fluctuations are aligned leading to an enhancement of the *** the case of fluid-particle flows,particles retain their energy longer than the surrounding fluid increasing the energy at the small scales,while at the large scales the particles do not follow exactly the surrounding fluid reducing its *** the latter effect,a considerable dependence on the particle Stokes number is found.

Univalent Functions and Diff(S^1)/S^1

The relation between Diff（S^1）/S^1 and the space of univalent analytic functions on the disk is elucidated and shown to provide upper bounds for the volumes of exhaustive approximations to an analytic submanifold of an infinite-dimensional space. The maximum magnitudes of the coefficients in the series expansions of univalent superanalytic functions on the superdisk are inferred.

Quasi-morphisms via Local Action Data and Quasi-isometries

In this work we first present a principle which says that quasi-morphisms can be obtained via local data of group action on certain appropriate spaces. In a rough manner the principle says that instead of starting with a given group and trying to build or study its space of quasi-morphisms, we should start with a space with a certain structure, in such a way that groups acting on this space and respecting this structure will automatically carry quasi-morphisms, where these are supposed to be better understood. This principle plays an important role in the second result of this paper, which is a universal embedding of the projective space of the linear space of quasi-morphisms of any given countable group, into the space of quasi-isometries of a certain universal metric space.

Practical Approaches to Risk Assessment

he importance of using risk assessment in developing food regulations is growing with the globalization of our food supply. The World Trade Organization has entrenched the principles of science based risk assessment in the Agreement on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Measures. The relevant international organization for food standards, the Codex Alimentarius Commission, recognises risk analysis, and its component parts risk assessment, risk management and risk communication, as the basis for scientific decision making. Risk assessment comprises two activities: hazard evaluation; and exposure estimation. A hazard may be chemical, microbiological or nutritional in origin. The practical application of risk assessment in Australia is illustrated in this presentation by four examples involving: (1) food additives, (2) microbiological safety of imported raw milk cheeses, (3) genetically modified foods and (4) imported food inspection.

Identifying high-risk over-entitlement in access control policies using fuzzy logic

Analysing access control policies is an essential process for ensuring over-prescribed permissions are identified and removed. This is a time-consuming and knowledge-intensive process, largely because there is a wealth of policy information that needs to be manually examined. Furthermore, there is no standard definition of what constitutes an over-entitled permission within an organisation’s access control policy, making it not possible to develop automated rule-based approaches. It is often the case that over-entitled permissions are subjective to an organisation’s role-based structure, where access is be divided and managed based on different employee needs. In this context, an irregular permission could be one where an employee has frequently changed roles, thus accumulating a wide-ranging set of permissions. There is no one size fits all approach to identifying permissions where an employee is receiving more permission than is necessary, and it is necessary to examine them in the context of the organisation to establish their individual risk. Risk is not a binary measure and, in this work, an approach is built using Fuzzy Logic to determine an overall risk rating, which can then be used to make a more informed decision as to whether a user is over-entitled and presenting risk to the organisation. This requires the exploratory use of establishing resource sensitivity and user trust as measures to determine a risk rating. The paper presents a generic solution, which has been implemented to perform experimental analysis on Microsoft’s New Technology File System to show how this works in practice. A simulation using expert knowledge for comparison is then performed to demonstrate how effective it is at helping the user identify potential irregular permissions.
