The s.reak-breas.ed s.imitar Babblers.of the Pomatorhinus.ruficollis.s.ecies.complex are found in mos. of the fores.ed habitats.acros. s.uthern and eas.ern As.a. The divers.fication his.ory of this.group is.obs.ured by high plumage variation acros. populations.and conflicting genetic s.gnal acros. loci. We combined genetic and geographic data from s.veral recent s.udies.to inves.igate how thes. s.ecies.divers.fied acros. China us.ng both phylogenetic and ecological niche modeling analys.s. Thes. two lines.of evidence are cons.s.ent in s.owing that two well-s.mpled s.ecies. P. reconditus.and P. nigros.ellatus. in central and s.uthern China res.ectively, likely experienced a his.ory of is.lation and expans.on as.s.itable habitat contracted during the las. interglacial and expanded in patchy extent during the glacial maximum. The genetic analys.s.s.owed that populations.of P. nigros.ellatus.on Hainan Is.and are very s.milar to the ones.in nearby mainland s.uthern China. We recovered two well-s.pported clades.within P. reconditus.that were not geographically s.ructured with both containing individuals.from the s.me localities.acros. central China. This.phylogenetic res.lt corres.onded to the ecological niche models.that s.owed expans.on from refugia s.nce the las. interglacial. This.s.udy illus.rates.the value of us.ng an integrative approach and detailed geographic s.mpling to help unders.and the recent divers.fication of birds.in China.

An emerging paradigm in analys.s.of geographic differentiation and s.eciation is.integration of phylogeographic analys.s.and paleo-dis.ributional projections.to gain ins.ght into thes. complex his.orical proces.es.(Peters.n, 2009). This.approach hinges.on the idea of a relatively s.able lands.ape, acros. which s.ecies.are dis.ributed, with occas.onal dis.ers.l events.or climatedriven range s.ifts.that open pos.ibilities.for population is.lation and s.eciation (s.ith et al., 2014). To date, the integration has.been employed largely in s.ngle-lineage s.udies. s.ch that evaluations.of its.effectivenes., caveats.to its.us., and appreciation of its.s.rengths.and weaknes.es.have been difficult (s.e early examples.in Hos.er et al., 2014, Lim et al., 2011, Peters.n and nyari,2007). In this.s.ecial Column, we have as.embled a group of 12 authors.applying this.methodology to bird taxa dis.ributed acros. Eas. and s.utheas. As.a and nearby is.ands. In this.s.t of papers. we examined 10 avian lineages.(s.ecies.or complexes.of s.ecies. us.ng s.milar molecular and paleo-geographic analytical approaches.creating a rare comparative datas.t by which to evaluate generalities.underlying the proces. of population divergence and as.es. region-wide commonalities.to unders.and his.orical proces.es.impacting thes. lineages.
