Effect of Binge Drinking on Glucose Metabolism in Occasional Drinkers: An Experimental Study

Binge drinking is a major public health problem that affects all age groups. Its relation to the risk of impaired glucose metabolism and diabetes is unclear due to controversial findings in animal models and lack of studies in humans. We performed an experimental study on 10 adult volunteers (7M/3F) under the age of 40 who were occasional binge drinkers. In all participants, we performed a baseline two-hour euglycemic hyperinsulinemic clamp at 80 mU•m−2•min−1 at baseline for comparison with an age and sex matched control population of non-drinkers. On a second occasion, before and after ingestion of 78 g of alcohol (beer) in 2 hrs we also measured insulin sensitivity using a 15-minute short insulin tolerance test in drinkers. Blood glucose was also measured every 15 mins over 2 hours during alcohol ingestion. Volunteers were aged 27.6 ± 5.7 years, with a BMI of 23.1 ± 2.8 kg/m2, and ALAT of 24.7 ± 3.0 UI/L. Insulin sensitivity evaluated by the clamp technique was higher in occasional drinkers (M = 12.7 ± 3.4 mg•kg−1•min−1 vs. 8.0 ± 2.3 mg•kg−1•min−1 in non-drinkers, p = 0.011). Acute alcohol ingestion was associated with a non-significant trends towards improved glucose disappearance during short insulin tolerance test (KITT 2.53% ± 0.22%/min before vs. 3.11% ± 1.15%/min after;p = 0.122). Beer consumption induced a significant increase in capillary glycaemia of 78% (p = 0.001). Bingeing was associated with reduced insulin secretion (Homa-β 113.5 ± 22.7 vs. 155.4 ± 57.6;p = 0.047). Binge drinking may induce an increase in insulin sensitivity but acutely decrease insulin secretion.

Electric vehicles(EVs) and grid storage for renewable energies will require batteries in tens of millions of tons, and thus they need to be sustainable. EVs call also for batteries with higher energy density than currently available, and this value is intrinsically limited by the properties of the transition metal oxide(TMO) cathodes [1]. There are two possible strategies to overcome these limitations: i) increase the operating voltage in the >4.4 V range; and ii) attempt to use more than one electron per transition metal [2]. Antioxidant therapy in male infertility： fact or fiction？

Infertile men have higher levels of semen reactive oxygen species （ROS） than do fertile men. High levels of semen ROS can cause sperm dysfunction, sperm DNA damage and reduced male reproductive potential. This observation has led clinicians to treat infertile men with antioxidant supplements. The purpose of this article is to discuss the rationale for antioxidant therapy in infertile men and to evaluate the data on the efficacy of dietary and in vitro antioxidant preparations on sperm function and DNA damage. To date, most clinical studies suggest that dietary antioxidant supplements are beneficial in terms of improving sperm function and DNA integrity. However, the exact mechanism of action of dietary antioxidants and the optimal dietary supplement have not been established. Moreover, most of the clinical studies are small and few have evaluated pregnancy rates. A beneficial effect of in vitro antioxidant supplements in protecting spermatozoa from exogenous oxidants has been demonstrated in most studies; however, the effect of these antioxidants in protecting sperm from endogenous ROS, gentle sperm processing and cryopreservation has not been established conclusively.

This paper considers a two-level supply chain consisting of one warehouse and one retailer. In this model we determine the optimal ordering policy according to inventory and transportation costs. We assume that the demand rate by the retailer is known. Shortages are allowed neither at the retailer nor at the warehouse. We study this model in two cases; decentralized and centralized. In the decentralized case the retailer and the warehouse independently minimize their own costs; while in the centralized case the warehouse and the retailer are considered as a whole firm. We propose an algorithm to find economic order quantifies for both the retailer and the warehouse which minimize the total system cost in the centralized case. The total system cost contains the holding and ordering costs at the retailer and the warehouse as well as the transportation cost from the warehouse to the retailer. The application of this model into the pharmaceutical downstream supply chain of a public hospital allows obtaining significant savings. By numerical examples, the costs are computed in MATLAB to compare the costs in the centralized case with decentralized one and to propose a saving-sharing mechanism through quantity discount.

Thermal effects on clay rocks for deep disposal of high-level radioactive waste

Thermal effects on the Callovo-Oxfordian and Opalinus clay rocks for hosting high-level radioactive waste were comprehensively investigated with laboratory and in situ experiments under repository relevant conditions:(1) stresses covering the range from the initial lithostatic state to redistributed levels after excavation,(2) hydraulic drained and undrained boundaries, and(3) heating from ambient temperature up to 90℃-120℃ and a subsequent cooling phase. The laboratory experiments were performed on normal-sized and large hollow cylindrical samples in various respects of thermal expansion and contraction, thermally-induced pore water pressure, temperature influences on deformation and strength, thermal impacts on swelling, fracture sealing and permeability. The laboratory results obtained from the samples are consistent with the in situ observations during heating experiments in the underground research laboratories at Bure and Mont-Terri. Even though the claystones showed significant responses to thermal loading, no negative effects on their favorable barrier properties were observed.

Sperm nuclear histone H2B： correlation with sperm DNA denaturation and DNA stainability

Aim： To examine the relationship between sperm DNA damage and sperm nuclear histone （H2B） staining. Methods： We evaluated sperm samples from 14 consecutive asthenoteratozoospermic infertile men and six consecutive fertile controls. Sperm nuclear histone （H2B） staining and sperm chromatin integrity （assessed by sperm chromatin structure assay and expressed using the percentage of （i） DNA fragmentation index [%DFI] and （ii） high DNA stainability [%HDS）]） were evaluated. Results： Histone H2B immunocytochemistry demonstrated two nuclear staining patterns：（i） focal punctate staining; and （ii） diffuse staining. Infertile men had a higher mean percentage of spermatozoa exhibiting diffuse H2B staining than did fertile men （7.7%± 4.6% vs. 1.6% ±1.2%, respectively, P 〈 0.01）. We observed significant relationships between the proportion of spermatozoa with diffuse nuclear histone staining and both sperm %DFI （r = 0.63, P 〈 0.01） and sperm %HDS （r = 0.63, P 〈 0.01）. Conclusion： The data demonstrate that infertile men have a higher proportion of spermatozoa with diffuse histone H2B than do fertile men and suggest that sperm DNA damage might, at least in part, be due to abnormally high histone H2B levels.

Cell therapy holds promise in addressing a number of unmet medical needs but despite its considerable impetus,faces numerous challenges including support for translational research in this ***,we examine the challenges confronting cell therapy research including the limited funding available for translational research partly due to the uncompetitive nature of required validation studies in cell therapy that of necessity are not *** issues include lack of standardization of definitions of cell products,uncertainty regarding optimum preclinical animal models,duplication of efforts to secure regulatory approval and a lack of uniformity of nomenclature for some cell ***,several initiatives to address all of these issues are underway.

Challenges and perspectives on high and intermediate-temperature sodium batteries

Energy storage systems are selected depending on factors such as storage capacity, available power, discharge time, self-discharge, efficiency, or durability. Additional parameters to be considered are safety, cost, feasibility, and environmental aspects. Sodium-based batteries （Na-S, NaNiC12） typically require operation temperatures of 300-350 ~C. The high operating temperatures substantially increase the operating costs and raise safety issues. This updated review describes the state-of-the-art materials for high-temperature sodium batteries and the trends towards the development and optimization of intermediate and low-temperature devices. Recent advances in inorganic solid electrolytes, glass-ceramic electrolytes, and polymer solid electrolytes are of immense importance in all-solid-state sodium batteries. Systems such as Na~ super ionic conductor （NASICON, Nal^xZr2PB-~SixOl2 （0 -〈 x _〈 3））, glass-ceramic 94Na3PS4＂6Na4SiS4, and polyethylene oxide （PEO）-sodium triflate （NaCF3SO3） are also discussed. Room temperature ionic liquids （RTILs） are also included as novel electrolyte solvents. This update discusses the progress of on-going strategies to enhance the conductivity, optimize the electrolyte/electrode interface, and improve the cell design of emerging technologies. This work aims to cover the recent advances in electrode and electrolyte materials for sodium- sulfur and sodium-metal-halide （zeolite battery research Africa project （ZEBRA）） batteries for use at high and intermediate temperatures.

Epidemiology of varicocele

Varicocele is a common problem in reproductive medicine practice. A varicocele is identified in 15% of healthy men and up to 35% of men with primary infertility. The exact pathophysiology of varicoceles is not very well understood, especially regarding its effect on male infertility. We have conducted a systematic review of studies evaluating the epidemiology of varicocele in the general population and in men presenting with infertility. In this article, we have identified some of the factors that can influence the epidemiological aspects of varicoceles. We also recognize that varicocele epidemiology remains incompletely understood, and there is a need for well-designed, large-scale studies to fully define the epidemiological aspects of this condition.
