Impact of coronary artery bypass grafting surgery on the chorioretinal biomicroscopic characteristics

BACKGROUND Most patients with cardiovascular disorders suffer from coronary artery diseases,which can be treated successfully using coronary artery bypass grafting(CABG).One of the unpleasant events following CABG is postoperative vision loss(POVL).Vulnerability of retinal vessels to hemodynamic changes,an expectable event following CABG,may contribute to the development of POVL,which might be associated with the changes in the choroidal and retinal *** To investigate postoperative changes in chorioretinal and peripapillary nerve fiber layer(NFL)thickness,and progression of diabetic and hypertensive retinopathy after *** In this prospective,cross-sectional study,49 eyes in 25 candidates for CABG underwent both ophthalmic and cardiovascular examinations within 6 mo prior to and 9 mo after *** Among the study participants,56%were male with a mean age of 62.84 years±10.49 years(range 33–80 years).Diabetes mellitus was observed in eight participants(32%).None of the patients suffered from postoperative anterior or posterior ischemic optic neuropathy,central retinal artery occlusion,and cortical *** mean value of the preoperative best corrected visual acuity was 0.11±0.10 logMAR(range,0–0.4),which worsened to 0.15±0.08 logMAR(range,0–0.4)after CABG(P=0.031).No significant difference was observed between the preand postsurgical choroidal(P=0.853)and macular(P=0.507)thickness,NFL thickness in the subfoveal(P>0.999)and peripapillary areas(P=0.659),as well as the severity of diabetic and hypertensive *** CABG may reduce visual acuity without affecting ocular *** vision reduction might be attributable to molecular or cellular variations,changes in visual pathway function,or central nervous system.

Flow and natural convection heat transfer characteristics of non-Newtonian nanofluid flow bounded by two infinite vertical flat plates in presence of magnetic field and thermal radiation using Galerkin method

Diabetic wound(DW)healing is a major clinical challenge due to multifactorial complications leading to prolonged *** nanofibrous(NF)membranes,due to special structural features,are promising biomaterials capable to promote DW healing through the delivery of active agents in a controlled ***,we report a multifunctional composite NF membrane loaded with ZnO nanoparticles(NP)and oregano essential oil(OEO),employing a new loading strategy,capable to sustainedly co-deliver bioactive *** characterization revealed the successful fabrication of loaded nanofibers with strong in vitro anti-bacterial and anti-oxidant ***,in vivo wound healing confirmed the potential of bioactive NF membranes in epithelialization and granulation tissue *** angiogenesis was greatly prompted by the bioactive NF membranes through expression of vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF).Moreover,the proposed NF membrane successfully terminated the inflammatory cycle by downregulating the pro-inflammatory cytokines interleukin􀀀6(IL-6)and matrix metalloproteinases-9(MMP-9).In vitro and in vivo studies revealed the proposed NF membrane is a promising dressing material for the healing of DW.

Neutron Radiography System Collimator Design via Monte Carlo Calculation

Neutron radiography uses the unique interaction probabilities of neutrons to create images of materials. This imaging technique is non-destructive. MCNP Monte Carlo Code has been used to design an optimized neutron radiography system that utilizes 241Am-Be neutron source. Many different arrangements have been simulated to obtain a neutron flux with higher amplitude and more uniform distribution in the collimator outlet, next to image plane. In the final arrangement the specifications of neutron filter, Gamma-ray shield and beam collimator has been determined. Simulations has been carried out for a 5Ci 241Am-Be neutron source. In this case 43.8 n/cm2s thermal neutron flux has been achieved at a distance of 35 cm from neutron source.

Co-Contamination of Arsenic and Other Trace Elements (Hg, Pb, Al, Fe, Cr, Ni, and Cd) in the Rafsanjan Plain Alluvial Aquifer SE of Iran and Arsenic Risk Assessment

Assessing the concentration of trace elements in aquifers is increasingly subjected to study in Iran due to the lack of groundwater resources. This study was undertaken with the objective of determining trace elements in the alluvial aquifer located in the southern part of the Rafsanjan plain, Kerman province, Iran. The total of 73 groundwater samples from individual water wells were analyzed by atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). Results showed that the levels of As, Hg, Pb, Al, Fe, Cr, Ni, and Cd elements were above the World Health Organization standards for drinking-water in some parts of the plain. Thus, statistical data analyses and spatial distribution interpretation were performed to identify the main sources of the pollution. A health risk assessment model derived from US environmental protection agency was applied to calculate the cumulative exposure to As as well as toxic and carcinogenic risks caused by drinking contaminated raw groundwater. Results show that residents of some part of region may suffer from significant adverse toxic health impacts and are exposed to drinking water with As concentrations.

BACKGROUND Methanol is a highly toxic,non-potable *** of methanol toxicity occur due to its fraudulent addition to alcoholic beverages as a cheaper substitute for ***,alongside the coronavirus disease 2019(COVID-19)pandemic,rumors circulated on social media that consuming alcohol can prevent or cure the virus,leading to a COVID-19 and methanol-induced optic neuropathy(MON)*** To investigate the impact of erythropoietin(EPO)on the outcomes of patients diagnosed with *** In this prospective study,105 patients presenting with acute bilateral visual loss secondary to methanol intoxication were enrolled from March to May 2020 at Farabi Eye Hospital.A comprehensive ocular examination was conducted for all *** human EPO and methylprednisolone were administered intravenously to all patients for three consecutive *** The mean age of the participants was 39.9 years(±12.6).Ninety-four patients were male and eleven were *** mean pre-treatment best corrected visual acuity(BCVA)improved from 2.0±0.86 to 1.39±0.69 logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution post-treatment(P<0.001),with significant improvement observed in all age categories and genders(P<0.001).Visual acuity improvement was also significant regardless of whether the patient presented before or after 72 h(P<0.001),and the post-treatment BCVA remained significant at all monthly follow-up visits(P<0.001).CONCLUSION EPO and methylprednisolone therapy have been shown to be effective in improving visual outcomes in patients with MON when administrated within the first month of *** awareness efforts are necessary to prevent further outbreaks of methanol toxicity in the current COVID-19 era.

Polymeric vs hydroxyapatite-based scaffolds on dental pulp stem cell proliferation and differentiation

AIM: To evaluate adhesion, proliferation and differentiation of human dental pulp stem cells(h DPSCs) on four commercially available scaffold biomaterials. METHODS: hD PSCs were isolated from human dental pulp tissues of extracted wisdom teeth and established in stem cell growth medium. h DPSCs at passage 3-5 were seeded on four commercially available scaffold biomaterials, SureO ss(Allograft), Cerabone(Xenograft), PLLA(Synthetic), and OSTEON Ⅱ Collagen(Composite), for 7 and 14 d in osteogenic medium. Cell adhesion and morphology to the scaffolds were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy(SEM). Cell proliferation and differentiation into osteogenic lineage were evaluated using DNA counting and alkaline phosphatase(ALP) activity assay, respectively. RESULTS: All scaffold biomaterials except Sure Oss(Allograft) supported h DPSC adhesion, proliferation and differentiation. hD PSCs seeded on PLLA(Synthetic) scaffold showed the highest cell proliferation and attachment as indicated with both SEM and DNA counting assay. Evaluating the osteogenic differentiation capability of hD PSCs on different scaffold biomaterials with ALP activity assay showed high level of ALP activity on cells cultured on PLLA(Synthetic) and OSTEON ⅡCollagen(Composite) scaffolds. SEM micrographs also showed that in the presence of Cerabone(Xenograft) and OSTEON Ⅱ Collagen(Composite) scaffolds, the h DPSCs demonstrated the fibroblastic phenotype with several cytoplasmic extension, while the cells on PLLA scaffold showed the osteoblastic-like morphology, round-like shape. CONCLUSION: PLLA scaffold supports adhesion, proliferation and osteogenic differentiation of hD PSCs. Hence, it may be useful in combination with hD PSCs for cell-based reconstructive therapy.
