A Multi-Wavelength Study of the 3B/X1.2 Flare Observed on 2003 October 26

We report results from a multi-wavelength study of the 3B/X1.2 tworibbon disk flare （S15E44）, which was well observed by both ground-based and space-borne instruments. Two pairs of conjugate kernels - K1 and K4, and K2 and K3 - in the Ha images are identified. These kernels are linked by two different systems of EUV loops. K1 and K4 correspond to the two 17 GHz and 34 GHz microwave sources observed by the Nobeyama Radioheliograph （NoRH）, while K2 and K3 have no corresponding microwave sources. Optical spectroscopic observations suggest that all the four kernels are possible precipitating sites of non-thermal electrons. Thus the energy of electron deposited in K2 and K3 should be less than 100keV. Two-dimensional distributions of the full widths at half maximum （FWHM） of the Ha profiles and the line-of-sight （LOS） velocities derived from the Ca n 8542 A profiles indicate that the largest FWHM and LOS velocity tends to be located near the outer edges of Hα kernels, which is consistent with the scenario of current two-ribbon flare models and previous results. When non-thermal electron bombardment is present, the observed Hα and Ca II 8542 A profiles are similar to previous observational and theoretical results, while the He I 10830 A profiles are different from the theoretical ones. This puts some constraints on future theoretical calculation of the He I 10830 A line.

This short review is to list pros and cons which are based on the literature and personal experience in cell culture studies related to possible commercial production of artificial meat as functional food. The general view of muscle composition and determinants of meat quality are shortly described. Principles of muscle cell propagation in culture and mutual relationships between different cell types present in this organ are briefly discussed. Additionally, the effects of some cytokines and growth factors for muscle cell growth and muscle tissue development are indicated. Finally, conclusion remarks related to detrimental consequences of meat production to natural environment as well as personal opinion of author on the prospects of artificial meat production are declared.

Effect of gear teeth finishing method on properties of teeth surface layer and its resistance to pitting wear creation

This work presented the characteristics of two gear teeth finishing methods, due to the properties of gear teeth surface layer obtained at the tooth working depth. These methods are: 1) the teeth carburization, hardening to a hardness of HRC 60-62 and then grinding, 2) the soft gear shaving as the final mechanical treatment and then carburizing and hardening to the hardness of HRC60-62. This work included the test results of the contact fatigue strength carried out on the circulating power system. The Wohler curves were plotted due to the obtained results, as the basis for the practical evaluation of the considered gear finishing methods. The parameters like volume distribution of the voids, content of the retained austenite, compressive residual stress value, but also the results of contact fatigue strength tests, are more favorable for the teeth shaving method than for the teeth grinding method.

Noise shapes the distribution pattern of an acoustic predator

Noise, an obvious effect of urbanization, has a negative impact on animal vocalizations and the hunting efficiency of acoustic predators. However, the influence of noise pollution on the spatial distribution of populations remains understudied. The aim was to assess the factors shaping the distribution pattern of an acoustic predator （long-eared owl Asio otus） in an urban-farmland matrix. We hypothesized that the probability of an acoustic predator occurring decreases with growing nocturnal noise emission. This owl survey was conducted in Krak6w （S Poland） on 79 ran- domly selected sample plots （1 km x 1 km）. Six habitat variables （area of parks, woodlands, grass- land, arable land, habitat diversity index, and noise pollution） were identified and correlated with the probability of the species＇ occurrence. Proximity to pedestrian routes and roads, habitat frag- mentation, and noise intensity was also defined at nest sites and random sites. Long-eared owls occurred on 37% of the sample plots. Occupied plots had a greater area of grassland and arable land as well as a lower level of noise pollution than the unoccupied ones. A multivariate model revealed that area of grassland and nocturnal noise emission was significantly correlated with the probability of long-eared owls occurring and that the high probability of occurrence recorded on plots with large areas of grassland was reduced by noise pollution. The noise intensity recorded at nest sites was also significantly lower than at random sites. This study suggests that apart from habitat factors, the distribution of acoustic predators in an urban matrix is driven by noise pollu- tion. This highlights the importance of proper landscape management, that is, maintaining large grassland areas and preventing noise from increasing within them.

An efficient FEM for pressure analysis of oil film in a piston pump

The paper concerns numerical analysis of pressure distribution of an oil film on the valve plate in the variable height gap of an axial piston pump. The analysis employs the finite element method. For determination of oil pressure variations in the gap, the Reynolds equation, commonly applied in the theory of lubrication, is applied. The equation is solved numerically with the use of self-developed program based on the finite element method. In order to obtain high accuracy of the results, an adaptive mesh refinement based on residual estimations of solution errors is applied. The calculation results are represented as dependent on the geometric and working parameters of the pump.

The scientific interest in capsules with the shell composed of fused microparticles is still growing due to a large number of practical ***-designed capsules should ensure the safe cargo delivery and facilitate its controlled release on *** biocompatibility and biodegradability are additional essential features of structures intended for biomedical *** paper presents two kinds of ultrasound sensitive capsules:the first type with the homogeneous shell made of a monolayer of fine turmeric granules,and the other with Janus shell composed of two different materials *** granules and synthetic polystyrene *** demonstrated that plane ultrasonic waves with low intensity and high frequency and also focused ultrasound can act as a trigger for smooth liberation of a liquid cargo,in our case,the dispersion of probiotic *** ultrasound-induced puncture of the shell was followed by unidirectional and controlled release of encapsulated *** case of Janus structures,in addition to sonication time and ultrasound frequency,distinct mechanical properties of two shell regions also influenced the course of content liberation *** expect that the use of natural material such as turmeric granules for the formation of the shells of the ultrasound-responsive capsules can further increase the range of their potential applications.

Impact of cold on the immune system of burying beetle, Nicrophorus vespilloides （Coleoptera： Silphidae）

Insect overwintering is one of the most astonishing phases of the insect life cycle. Despite vast amounts of knowledge available about the physiological mechanisms of this phenomenon, the impact of stress factors on insect immune system functioning during the winter is still unknown. The aim of this study is to analyze how low temperatures influence the immune system of the beetle Nic＇rophorus vespilloides. The results show that the beetle＇s immune system is differently modulated by cold induced in laboratory settings than that which occurs in natural conditions, Among beetles cultured in conditions similar to summer, low temperatures, did not influence the number of circulating haemocytes, phenoloxidase activity, haemocytes morphology, and percentage ratio of haemocyte types. In these beetles, differences were noted only in the ability of haemocytes to perform phagocytosis. Individuals acclimated in natural conditions in autumn had a higher level of humoral response and a different percentage ratio of haemocyte types. During the winter period, the number of haemocytes in the beetles decreased, but the percentage ratio of phagocytic haemocytes increased. Furthermore, we noted an increase of phenoloxidase activity. Our study also showed mitotic divisions ofhaemocytes in haemolymph collected from burying beetles after cold exposure and from burying beetles collected from natural conditions during autumn and winter. Differences in response to low temperatures in laboratory conditions and the natural environment suggest that the simultaneous presence of other stress factors during winter such as desiccation and starvation have a significant influence on the activity of burying beetle＇s immune system.
