Autoheated thermophilic aerobic sludge digestion and metal bioleaching in a two-stage reactor system

A two-stage process has been developed for stabilization of sludge and removal of heavy metals from the secondary activated sludge with high rate of energy and time conservation. The first stage of the process involves autoheated thermophilic aerobic digestion at 55-60℃ inoculated with less-acidophilic thermophilic sulfur-oxidizing microorganisms （ATAD）. The results show that it is possible to maintain the autoheated conditions （55-60℃） in the ATAD reactor up to 24 hr, leading to reduction of 21% total solids （TS）, 27% volatile solids （VS）, 27% suspended solids （SS） and 33% volatile suspended solids （VSS） from the sludge. The sludge pH also decreased from 7 to 4.6 due to the activity of less-acidophilic thermophilic microorganisms. In the second stage operation, the digested sludge （pH 4.6, TS 31.6 g/L） from stage one was subjected to bioleaching in a continuous stirred tank reactor, operated at mean hydraulic retention times （HRTs） of 12, 24 and 36 hr at 30℃. An HRT of 24 hr was found to be sufficient for removal of 70% Cu, 70% Mn, 75% Ni, and 80% Zn from the sludge. In all, 39% VSS, 76% Cu, 78.2% Mn, 79.5% Ni and 84.2% Zn were removed from the sludge in both the stages.

The synthesis and catalytic properties of copper nanoparticles（Cunps） were reported using L-ascorbic acid as reducing and capping agent in aqueous medium. The effect of different concentrations of L-ascorbic acid on the particle size of Cunps was investigated. The synthesized Cunps were characterized by UV-Visible spectrophotometer, scanning electron microscopy（SEM）, transmission electron microscopy（TEM） and Fourier transform infrared（FTIR） spectrophotometer. The result indicates that the size of copper nanoparticles decreases with the increase in concentration of L-ascorbic acid. L-Ascorbic acid plays an important role to protect the copper nanoparticles from oxidation and agglomeration which helps nanoparticles to get better stability for the application. The synthesized Cunps show excellent catalytic activity in the oxidation of serine（Ser） by peroxomonosulphate（PMS）. The catalytic activity of Cunps increases with the decrease in size of Cunps. The Cunps are expected to be suitable alternative and play an imperative role in the fields of catalysis and environmental remediation.

Iliopsoas abscess(IPA) is an uncommon infection. The clinical presentation is usually insidious. Most patients present with nonspecific symptoms, leading to difficulty in prompt and accurate diagnosis. Delay in diagnosis can lead to complications, such as sepsis and death. Tattooing has become more popular over the recent years and has been associated with tattooing-related and blood-borne infections. We present two related cases of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus IPA after tattooing and review the epidemiology, etiology, clinical features, and management of IPA.

Perifollicular granuloma is a unique histologic feature and whether it is associated with immunoglobulin G4(IgG 4)-related disease is controversial. We report a case of a 38-year-old man who presented with worsening left eye pain, proptosis, tearing, gritty sensation, blurred vision and multiple lymphadenopathy. An axillary lymph node resection showed reactive follicular and interfollicular lymph node hyperplasia, and increased eosinophils and plasma cells(at least 80% of Ig G+ plasma cells were positive for IgG 4). A distinct feature was the presence of multifocal, perifollicular histiocytic granulomas, which formed a wreath around the entire follicles. The human herpes virus 8 was not detected by immunohistochemistry. In addition, an extensive panel of special stains, immunohistochemistry, and flow cytometry was negative for lymphoma, fungal, or mycobacterial infection. The findings were suggestive of IgG 4-related sclerosing disease-associated lymphadenopathy. Further laboratory testing showed a significant increase of serum immunoglobulin E(> 23000 IU/mL) and slight increase of total Ig G, but normal serum Ig G4. Even though perifollicular granuloma is a nonspecific histopathologic feature and can be seen in other diseases, such as nodular lymphocyte predominant Hodgkin lymphoma, Ig G4-related lymphadenopathy should be listed in the differential diagnoses of benign reactive lymph nodes, especially when perifollicular granuloma and plasmacytosis coexist.
