The Gobi Altai region of southern Mongolia has been in the Eurasian plate interior since the midMesozoic,yet has experienced episodic phases of deformation since that *** this paper,we document field evidence to characterize and date the intra-plate tectonic history of the Gobi Altai region from the Triassic to the *** this end,we provide detailed mapping of the structure and stratigraphy of the eastern flanks of *** Bogd that contains the widest variety of rock-time units in the *** carry out geochronological analysis of basaltic lavas and basement granite in the *** demonstrate that a crystalline basement with a 502 ± 8 Ma granitoid（U/Pb） underwent two phases of basin formation in the *** we date with new40Ar/39Ar lava ages of 218.5 ± 1.5,123.2 ± 0.7 and 124.8 ± 1.2 Ma,*** phases are linked to deposition of fluvio-lacustrine sediments and trap-like basaltic volcanics,with cumulative thicknesses of 1000-1500 *** basins were likely north-facing half-grabens that developed underN-S extension,but were subsequently overthrusted by Paleozoic and older crystalline basement during a less well constrained,but likely mid-Cretaceous phase of N-S shortening and basin *** results are consistent with recent seismic imaging of rift basins100 km to the NE of the study area where a similar history was *** multiple phases of intra-plate deformation appear to have parallel structural trends,most likely due to reactivated Paleozoic basement structures created during the original terrane amalgamation of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt continental *** strong basement heterogeneity may predispose it to reactivation,and make it sensitive to changes in the overall stress field of the Eurasian plate driven by forces at its margins and *** study of Mongolia’s multi-stage tectonic history may thus provide a key proxy for the long-term dynamics of the Eurasian *** addition,the repeated reactivation

Understanding and managing the morphology of branches incising into sand-clay deposits in the Dutch Rhine Delta

In the Rhine-Meuse delta in the south-western part of the Netherlands,the morphology of the river branches is highly dependent on the erodibility of the *** processes that were initiated after closure of the Haringvliet estuary branch by a dam(in 1970),caused a strong incision of several connecting *** to the geological evolution of this area the lithology of the subsoil shows large variations in highly erodible sand and poorly erodible peat and clay *** study shows how the geological information can be used to create 3D maps of the erodibility of the sub-soil, and how this information can be used to schematize the sub-soil in computational models for morphological *** incisement of sand patches between areas with poorly erodible bed causes deep scour holes,hence increasing the risk on river-bank instability(flow slides) and damage to constructions such as groynes,quays,tunnels, and *** types of mathematical models,ranging from 1D(SOBEK) to quasi-3D(Delft3D) have been applied to study the future development of the river bed and possible management *** results of these approaches demonstrate that models require inclusion of a layer-bookkeeping approach for sub-soil schematization, non-uniform sediment fractions(sand-mud),tidal and river-discharge boundary conditions,and capacity-reduction transport *** risk-reducing river management it has been shown how the development of the river bed can be addressed on a large scale and small *** instance,the use of sediment feeding and fixation of bed can be proposed for large-scale management,while monitoring and interventions at initiation of erosion can be proposed as response to small-scale developments that exceed predefined intervention levels.

In this work,we explore the use of an iterative Bayesian Monte Carlo(iBMC)method for nuclear data evaluation within a TALYS Evaluated Nuclear Data Library(TENDL)*** goal is to probe the model and parameter space of the TALYS code system to find the optimal model and parameter sets that reproduces selected experimental *** method involves the simultaneous variation of many nuclear reaction models as well as their parameters included in the TALYS ***‘best’model set with its parameter set was obtained by comparing model calculations with selected experimental *** experimental data types were used:(1)reaction cross sections,(2)residual production cross sections,and(3)the elastic angular *** improve our fit to experimental data,we update our‘best’parameter set—the file that maximizes the likelihood function—in an iterative *** was determined by monitoring the evolution of the maximum likelihood estimate(MLE)values and was considered reached when the relative change in the MLE for the last two iterations was within 5%.Once the final‘best’file is identified,we infer parameter uncertainties and covariance information to this file by varying model parameters around this *** this way,we ensured that the parameter distributions are centered on our *** proposed method was applied to the evaluation of p+^(59)Co between 1 and 100 ***,the adjusted files were compared with experimental data from the EXFOR database as well as with evaluations from the TENDL-2019,jENDL/He-2007 and jENDL-4.0/HE nuclear data libraries.

Carrier multiplication is demonstrated in a solid-state dispersion of germanium nanocrystals in a silicon–dioxide *** is performed by comparing ultrafast photo-induced absorption transients at different pump photon energies below and above the threshold energy for this *** average germanium nanocrystal size is approximately 5–6 nm,as inferred from photoluminescence and Raman spectra.A carrier multiplication efficiency of approximately 190%is measured for photo-excitation at 2.8 times the optical bandgap of germanium nanocrystals,deduced from their photoluminescence spectra.

Effect of viscosity on the avalanche dynamics and flow transition of wet granular matter

The dynamic behaviour of granular flows is important in geo-mechanics and industrial applications,yet poorly *** studied the effects of liquid viscosity and particle size on the dynamics of wet granular material flowing in a slowly rotating drum,in order to detect the transition from the avalanching to the continuous flow regime.A discrete element method(DEM)model,in which contact forces and cohesive forces were considered,was employed to simulate this flow *** model was validated experimentally,using glass beads in a wooden drum and water–glycerol mixtures to tune the liquid *** DEM simulations showed comparable results to the experiments in terms of average slope angle and avalanche *** observed that the avalanche amplitude,flow layer velocity and granular temperature decrease as the liquid viscosity *** effect is more pronounced for smaller sized *** increase in viscous forces causes the flowing particles to behave as a bulk,pushing the free surface towards a convex *** addition,avalanches become less pronounced and the granular flow transitions from the avalanching regime to the continuous *** avalanching flow regime is marked by intermittent rigid body movement of the particulate bed and near-zero drops in the granular temperature,while no rigid body movement of the bed occurs in the continuous flow *** identified the avalanching-continuous flow transition region as a function of a dimensionless granular Galileo number.

BACKGROUND ABO-incompatible and ABO-compatible kidney transplantation are equivalent in terms of short-term graft and patient survival. This is thought to be the result of ABO-incompatible graft accommodation, which occurs when anti-blood group antibodies re-occur after transplantation but somehow do not yield their detrimental effect. The underlying mechanism is unclear, but one of the hypotheses is that this is the result of complement inhibition. Since virtually all ABO-incompatible graft biopsies are C4d positive, this complement inhibition must occur somewhere in the complement cascade after the formation of C4d has already taken place, but where exactly is unclear. It is also unclear whether complement inhibition is complete. Incomplete accommodation could explain why recent studies have shown that long-term graft function in ABOincompatible transplantation is somewhat inferior to ABO-compatible kidney *** To unravel the relationship between pre-transplant anti-ABO antibodies,complement activation, and long-term graft *** we included all 27 ABO-incompatible transplantations that were performed between 2008 and 2013 at the Academic Medical Center Amsterdam and the University Medical Center Groningen. For each ABO-incompatible transplantation, we included four ABO-compatible controls matched by age, sex,and transplantation *** Graft and patient survival were not significantly different. The slope of kidney function during five-year follow-up was also not significantly different, but ABOincompatible recipients did have a lower kidney function at three months(creatinine clearance 58 vs 69 mL/min, P = 0.02, Modification of Diet in Renal Disease 46 vs 52 mL/min/1.73 m^2, P = 0.08), due to a high rate of early rejection(33% vs 15%, P = 0.03), mostly T-cell mediated. Legume rhizobium symbiosis is initiated upon perception of bacterial secreted lipo-chitooligosaccharides （LCOs）. Perception of these signals by the plant initiates a signaling cascade that leads to nodule formation. Several studies have implicated a function for cytokinin in this process. However, whether cytokinin accu- mulation and subsequent signaling are an integral part of rhizobium LCO signaling remains elusive. Here, we show that cytokinin signaling is required for the majority of transcriptional changes induced by rhizo- bium LCOs. In addition, we demonstrate that several cytokinins accumulate in the root susceptible zone 3 h after rhizobium LCO application, including the biologically most active cytokinins, trans-zeatin and iso- pentenyl adenine. These responses are dependent on calcium- and calmodulin-dependent protein kinase （CCaMK）, a key protein in rhizobial LCO-induced signaling. Analysis of the ethylene-insensitive Mtein21 Mtsickle mutant showed that LCO-induced cytokinin accumulation is negatively regulated by ethylene. Together with transcriptional induction of ethylene biosynthesis genes, it suggests a feedback loop negatively regulating LCO signaling and subsequent cytokinin accumulation. we argue that cytokinin accumulation is a key step in the pathway leading to nodule organogenesis and that this is tightly controlled by feedback loops.

The most abundant immunoglobulin present in the human body is IgA. It has the highest concentrations at the mucosal lining and in biofluids such as milk and is the second most abundant class of antibodies in serum. we assessed the structural diversity and clonal repertoire of IgA1-containing molecular assemblies longitudinally in human serum and milk from three donors using a mass spectrometry-based approach. IgA-containing molecules purified from serum or milk were assessed by the release and subsequent analysis of their Fab fragments. Our data revealed that serum IgA1 consists of two distinct structural populations, namely monomeric IgA1 (∼80%) and dimeric joining (j-) chain coupled IgA1 (∼20%). Also, we confirmed that IgA1 in milk is present solely as secretory (S)IgA, consisting of two (∼50%), three (∼33%) or four (∼17%) IgA1 molecules assembled with a j-chain and secretory component (SC). Interestingly, the serum and milk IgA1-Fab repertoires were distinct between monomeric, and j-chain coupled dimeric IgA1. The serum dimeric j-chain coupled IgA1 repertoire contained several abundant clones also observed in the milk IgA1 repertoire. The latter repertoire had little to no overlap with the serum monomeric IgA1 repertoire. This suggests that human IgA1s have (at least) two distinct origins;one of these produces dimeric j-chain coupled IgA1 molecules, shared in human serum and milk, and another produces monomeric IgA1 ending up exclusively in serum.

2D materials are considered for applications that require strong light-matter interaction because of the apparently giant oscillator strength of the exciton transitions in the absorbance ***,the effective oscillator strengths of these transitions have bee n scarcely reported,nor is there a con sistent interpretati on of the obtained ***,we analyse the transition dipole moment and the ensuing oscillator strength of the exciton transition in 2D CdSe nanoplatelets by means of the optically induced Stark effect(OSE).Intriguingly,we find that the exciton absorption line reacts to a high intensity optical field as a transition with an oscillator strength FStark that is 50 times smaller than expected based on the linear absorption *** propose that the pronounced exciton absorption line should be seen as the sum of multiple,low oscillator strength transitions,rather than a single high oscillator strength one,a feat we assign to strong exciton center-of-mass *** the quantum mechanical description of excitons,this 50-fold difference between both oscillator strengths corresponds to the ratio between the cohere nee area of the exciton's center of mass and the total area,which yields a coherence area of a mere 6.1 *** we find that the coherence area in creases with reducing temperature,we conclude that thermal effects,related to lattice vibrations,contribute to exciton *** further support of this localization model,we show that FStark is in dependent of the n anoplatelet area,correctly predicts the radiative lifetime,and lines up for strongly confined quantum dot systems.
