Using Graphical and Multivariate Statistical Methods for Geochemical Assessment of Groundwater Quality in OuméDepartment (Côte d’Ivoire)

The large demand for drinking water in Oumé Department in the Centre western of Cote d’Ivoire is supplied from groundwater sources. This study investigated the geochemical assessment of groundwater quality in Oumé Department by using a hydrochemical approach with graphical and self-organizing maps (SOM) neural network methods. It was carried out for identifying the hydrogeochemical processes related to groundwater quality, conducting a hydrochemical evaluation of the aquifer systems and delineating the various factors controlling the water chemistry and general suitability for drinking purposes. To reach these goals, groundwater was sampled from 91 locations. Results indicated that the groundwater sampled is acid (pH 4.27 - 7.10) and was weakly fairly mineralised with electrical conductivity values obtained in the range of 95 - 1071 μS·cm-1. All calcium (6.8 - 127.59 mg·L-1), magnesium (1.08 - 29.00 mg·L-1), sulphate (0 - 74.9 mg·L-1), chloride (1.2 - 89.8 mg·L-1), sodium (1.2 - 94.27 mg·L-1) and potassium (0.05 - 23.65 mg·L-1) concentrations and almost nitrate concentrations were within of the recent acceptability and healthbased of drinking-water guidelines set by World Health Organization (WHO). Moreover eleven sampling sites only have concentrations of iron above 0.3 mg·L-1 which can stain laundry and cause taste. In the water points, hydrochemical facies was calcium-bicarbonate (Ca-HCO3) type which generally shows less-polluted water quality. Based on pattern analysis, the inter-relationships among the groundwater quality variables due to the contact with different geological formations on the basis of rocks basicity and acidity were extracted and interpreted.

Borehole Productivity Controlling Factors in Crystalline Bedrock Aquifer of Gkeke Region,Center of Cote d’Ivoire

The presence of both weathered rocks and fractured crystalline bedrock aquifers makes Hydrogeology in Gbêkê region of C?te d’Ivoire. Access to water in this region is not easy. This study focuses on the influence of borehole depth, weathering thickness and electrical resistivity of the geological structures on borehole productivity that exploit the crystalline aquifer system. Bivariate analysis was used to determine the relationships between these factors and specific capacity for measuring borehole productivity. The values ranged from 0.0088 to 2.20 m3?h?1?m?1. The analysis shows that there is no correlation between productivity and weathering thickness. However, weathering depths between 15 and 35 m provide the highest specific capacity values (Qs ≥ 1 m3?h?1?m?1). For hydrogeological discontinuities interest, boreholes located in KH, QH and H anomaly curve types were the most productive. As productivity diminishes with depth, a deeper borehole can be more productive if it reaches a geological structure that is favorable for groundwater flow. Those hydrogeological parameters are extremely important in borehole productivity in Gbêkê region.

Modeling of Quaternary Groundwater Pollution Risk by GIS and Multicriteria Analysis in the Southern Part of Abidjan District(Cote d’Ivoire)

The pollution generated by human activities in the area “Vridi canal-Grand Bassam” puts more at risk the quaternary groundwater that supplies water to a large part of the population of the southern part of Abidjan city. This paper deals with the combined approach of geographic information systems and multicriteria analysis to delineate areas at risk of pollution of groundwater in the study area. The multicriteria analysis also incorporated the statistical and geostatistical techniques for defining the factor ratings and weightings of all the parameters under a GIS environment. The criterion for these factor ratings and weightings was the correlation coefficient of each parameter with the nitrates concentration in groundwater. Two indicators were combined for creating situations of pollution risks according to their importance: the intrinsic vulnerability indicators which combined the depth to groundwater, the net recharge, the slope, the soil media, the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity and extrinsic vulnerability characterized by the land use. The results showed that all to the site presents nitrate pollution risks with 50.7% of moderate risk, and 49.3% of high and very high risks. The areas which present the highest risks of pollution are the densely urbanized communes of Treichville, Marcory, Koumasi, Port-Bouet and Grand-Bassam. The sensitivity analysis indicates that parameters causing high sensitivity on the nitrate pollution risks map are the depth to groundwater and the recharge. The errors committed on the maps establishment are ±0.15%, ±0.40% and ±6% respectively for IV map, EV map and pollution risk map.

Conceptual Model of Aquifers in the Bedrock Zone of the MarahouéWatershed (Centre-West of Ivory Coast)

Marahoué watershed, located in the Center West of Côte d’Ivoire, has experienced significant population growth in recent decades. And a major economic boom linked to intense agricultural activity and the presence of certain industries. This population growth is also accompanied by seasonal water shortages. Hence it needs to better manage the basin’s groundwater, which is a permanent resource and more resistant than surface water to climatic hazards. The objective of this study is therefore to propose a conceptual model of hydrogeological flow for the sustainable exploitation of groundwater resources in the Marahoué watershed. The establishment of the conceptual model was carried out in two stages. The first step consisted in defining the stratigraphic units. For this purpose, three units have been defined. These are the layer of alterite, the useful fissured horizon and the sound basement. The thickness of the layer of alterite varies from 0 to 80 m with an average of 26 m. As for the useful fissured horizon, its thickness is between 43 and 46.5 with an average of 45 m. In addition, the roof of the basement presents a slightly uneven morphology with a North-West, South-East dip and the altitudes are between 150 and 390 m. The second step corresponds to the phase of determining the hydrodynamic parameters. During this phase, the crack porosity, the transmissivity, the conductivity, the storage coefficient, the hydrological balance and the piezometric map were determined. Indeed, these parameters (the crack porosity, the transmissivity, the conductivity and the storage coefficient) confirm not only the heterogeneity of the medium but that the cracked horizon is sufficiently porous to be assimilated to an equivalent continuous medium during the simulation.

Seasonal and Spatial Variations in Water Physicochemical Quality of Coastal Potou Lagoon (Côte d’Ivoire, Western Africa)

The study investigates the seasonal and spatial variations in water quality parameters at four different locations along Potou lagoon for seventeen consecutive months. In order to explore spatial variation among different stations and seasonal changes, no parametric test of ANOVA was used to compare the mean values of the tested parameters for all the different sampling sites and seasons. Seasonal observations on water quality parameters and chlorophyll-a in Potou coastal lagoon revealed that the coastal water was significantly influenced by freshwater during the long and short rainy seasons. The seasonal significant variation (p a increased during the long dry season, whereas, the concentration of nutrients (nitrite, nitrate, ammonium and soluble reactive phosphorus) increased in the rainy periods. Contrary to the seasonal variation, a spatial homogeneity (horizontal) was registered for all variables, a condition related to the low human occupation in the lagoon watershed. Comparing this study with others conducted in Potou lagoon in 2008, no critical differences that evidence alteration in the water quality were found.

Interest of Electrical Logging in Implementation of Technical Equipment for Water Drilling: Case of the Abrobakro Collecting Field (South-East Ivory Coast)

This work concerns the collecting field of the Abrobakro site, the objective of which is to determine the thickness of the layers crossed during drilling from electrical logging in order to propose the equipment plan for the various boreholes. The electrical logging data sheets, particularly those on resistivity and expeditious granulometry using a 1.25 mm and 2 mm mesh sieve, were used. The layer thicknesses are determined with the inflection points on the graphs. The electrical logging shows that the sands in the study area have resistivity values between 400 and 5000 Ω.m. The decrease in resistivity observed at 50 m for all boreholes shows that the static level of the groundwater is at this depth. The results of the accelerated granulometry show that the first 20 meters contain more fine particles and coarse to very coarse sands from 20 m. The granulometry of the screen laying areas shows that the 1.5 mm slot openings are best suited for all drilling in the Abrobakro collecting field. The diameter d10 of the aquiferous sands of the collecting field is close to 1.25 mm.

Using Water Quality Index for Assessing of Physicochemical Quality of Quaternary Groundwater in the Southern Part of Abidjan District (Côte d’Ivoire)

In this study, fourteen physicochemical parameters were monitored at 61 groundwater sampling points located in the southern part of Abidjan District. Each water sampling location was sampled in March and July 2007, representing respectively the long dry season and the long wet season. Groundwater evaluation index and statistical methods were used to assess Quaternary groundwater physicochemical quality in term of drinking and irrigation purposes. The groundwater samples irrespective of seasons fell in mixed K-Na-HCO3 and K-Na-Cl types. Groundwater quality index values varied from 14.01 to 593.44 and from 20.88 to 567.44, in dry and rainy seasons, respectively. In both seasons, 9.83% exhibited poor water quality and 3.27% indicated unsuitable water for drinking purposes. The studied water wells were heavily contaminated with nitrate, nitrite and ammonium in the strongly urbanized areas at Treichville, Koumassi, Marcory, Port-Bou?t and Grand-Bassam. The degree of correlation between physicochemical parameters suggested that groundwater quality was mainly related to geogenic (rock–water interaction) and anthropogenic sources (domestic sewage), and intrusion of marine and lagoon waters in the study area. Sodium adsorption ratio was generally low during study period, indicating most groundwater sampled was suitable for irrigation purposes.
