Developing an integrated urban ecological efficiency framework for spatial ecological planning:A case on a tropical mega metropolitan area of the global south

Rapid urbanization has emerged as one of the most critical challenges to ecological sustainability in urban areas.In developing countries,the degradation of the ecosystem is more prominent due to the lack of urban planning.Thus,it has become urgent for researchers to identify the ecological efficiency(EE)changes imposed by urban expansion and promote sustainable land use planning.This study aims to develop a comprehensive urban ecological efficiency(UEE)framework in the Kolkata Metropolitan Area(KMA),India,from 2000 to 2020.Principal component analysis(PCA)was used to develop a remote sensing-based UEE index(UEEI)based on five effective ecological parameters(Greenness,Dryness,Heat,Wetness and vegetation health.A single sensitivity parameter was also calculated to determine the role of a single parameter based on which management strategies can be carried out.The findings showed that(i)there were substantial deteriorations of UEE in the last 20 years.In 2000 the areas with good EE were about 65.5%which declined to 53.72%in 2010 and 20.87%in 2020.The areas with good UEE decreased 68%and 61%from 2000 to 2020 and 2010 to 2020,respectively;(ii)the areas with good UEE were 52%in 2000,while 38%in 2010.Most urban centres(Bhadreshwar,Champdani,Srirampur,Bally,Howrah,Kamarhati,Baranagar,Dum Dum,South Dum Dum,Rajarhat,Bidhannagar)located around the Kolkata megacity are characterized by poor and very poor EE(ranges of 0.60-1.00).Thus,spatiotemporal pattern of UEE could assist to clarify the administrative responsibilities as well as obligations.In addition to this,the UEE framework can help for scientific guidance of urban ecosystem protection and restoration through comprehensive spatial landscape planning.

Rapid urbanization urges the immediate attention of policymakers to ensure sustainable city development.Under-standing the urban growth drivers is essential to address effective strategies for urbanization-related challenges.This work aims to study Raiganj’s urban development and the factors associated with this expansion.This study employed global logistic regression(LR)and geographical weighted logistic regression(GWLR)to explore the role of different factors.The results showed that the role of the central business district(covariate>-1),commercial market(covariate>-3),and police station(covariate>-4)were significant to the development of new built-up areas.In the second period,major roads(covariate>-2)and new infrastructures(covariate>-4)became more relevant,particularly in the eastern and southern areas.GWLR was more accurate in assessing the different fac-tors’impact than LR.The results obtained are essential to understanding urban expansion in India’s medium-class cities,which is critical to effective policies for sustainable urbanization.

Exploring the factors affecting urban ecological risk:A case from an Indian mega metropolitan region

Assessment of ecological risk(ER)is a key approach to adapting and mitigating ecological deterioration in cities of developing countries.In developing countries,the ecological landscapes such as vegetation cover,water bodies,and wetlands are highly vulnerable due to rapid urban expansion.Therefore,urban ER(UER)assessment and its drivers are crucial to guide ecological protection as well as restoration.This study aims to explore the spatiotemporal pattern of UER and the impact of urban spatial form on UER in the Kolkata Megacity Region(KMR),India.This study developed a UER index and used spatial regression models across the urban centres.The ER has been assessed at city scale as well as grid-scale(2 km x 2 km and 5 km x 5 km)from 2000 to 2020.The results showed that ER has substantially increased over the last 20 years.The urban centres with very high and high ER substantially increased,i.***.from 21.95%in 2000 to 31.70%in 2020.Kolkata and its surrounding urban centres were mostly characterized by very high and high ER.ER was influenced by spatial variables(such as land use and landscapes pattern).However,remote sensing parameters were weakly related to ER.The spatial lag model(SLM)(R^(2)=0.8686)was found to be better fit model than spatial error model(SEM)(R^(2)=0.8661)and ordinary linear regression model(OLS)(R^(2)=0.8641).Thus,the findings of the study can improve research and a comprehensive framework for urban ecological resources and provide a scientific basis for urban ecosystem planning and restoration.In addition to this,it will guarantee the sustainable utilization of urban ecosystems.

The automotive sector is undergoing a significant transformation to address critical challenges affecting consumers and the climate.One of the most difficult tasks is reducing the weight of vehicles in order to minimize energy consumption.A ten percent decrease in curb weight is predicted to result in a six to eight percent reduction in energy consumption.Composite materials having better strength to weight ratio are one of the finest options for planning,designing and manufacturing of the lightweight components.In automobile sector,employment of composite materials would reduce the weight of electric vehicles as well as influence their aerodynamic properties.Therefore,it would decrease the consumption of fuel as well by cutting down harmful emissions and particulate matter.Numerous developments in such technologies are studied over the last decade by automobile establishments and academic researchers.Fiber-reinforced polymers,particularly those established on glass and carbon fibers,have attracted attention of the automobile sector due to their high performance and lesser weight.This paper reviews the applications of various types of composite materials and the fabrication techniques of such composites in electric vehicles and automobiles.Furthermore,a comprehensive data breakdown of the lightweight materials statistics and figures on market analysis of high performance composite is presented.Finally,a discussion is made on the different applications of these composites.Hence,the details presented in this study should be useful for automobile companies to align with NET ZERO global mission while sustaining their businesses.

The process of ripening involves physiological and biochemical events that become a concern during postharvest storage.We have documented different approaches for the preservation and maintenance of fruit quality during the postharvest period that are biocompatible and fully safe for consumption.Chemical residues that sustain sensory characteristics,such as color,ﬂavor,aroma,and texture,are considered.In fruit ripening,both physical and chemical elicitors are described that regulate ethylene biosynthesis or its signaling for gene expression.The key regulatory enzymes,such as ACC synthase and ACC oxidase,for ethylene biosynthesis,are important for both climacteric and non-climacteric fruits.Anti-oxidizing genes that retain sensory characteristics are concerns in this respect.Chemical elicitors,including chitosan,polyamine,phenolics,lipopolysaccharide,silver derivatives,and nanocomposites,are described.Gas pressure,light wavelengths,relative humidity,cooling,and other environmental factors are important for improved postharvest storage.These elicitors maintain redox status by inhibiting the generation of reactive oxygen species(ROS)or their lysis.Growth regulators,including abscisic acid,auxin,brassinosteroids,jasmonic acid,and salicylic acid,are important for the regulation of ripening.Mechanical injuries,ionic imbalances,temperature variations,and tissue dehydration can occur irrespective of ripening cate-gories.The use of synthetic physiochemically active compounds is discussed in terms of physiological,metabolic,cellular,and molecular functions.Ethylene-induced autocatalytic processes,antioxidant cascades,epigenetic regulation,and homeodomain gene expression are discussed.Sugar–acid metabolism,dissolution of the cell wall,and direct or indirect production of secondary metabolites related to postharvest storage are mentioned regarding chilling storage.Elicitors and agrochemicals that trigger plant defense to increase secondary metabolite production are discussed for reducing fruit senescence during postharvest s

Dear Editor,We present a case of bilateral choroidal detachment(CD)and exudative retinal detachment(ERD)following laser peripheral iridotomy(LPI)in a patient of ocular Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada’s disease(VKHD).A 42 yearold-lady presented to us with the complaint of sudden onset of pain,redness,and dimness of vision in her right eye for past two weeks.Her best-corrected visual acuity(BCVA)was 20/40 and 20/30 in right and left eye respectively.

The demand of present technology inviting the popularity of multivalued optical computation system to coup up with the latest scenario of ultrahigh processing speed and handling large amount of data The magnitude comparator is the heart of the arithmetic and logic unit(ALU)in any logical processing and computing system.In this paper,a trinary magnitude comparator circuit has been proposed and implemented with modified trinary number(MTN)system.Optical tree architecture(OTA)of the proposed circuit has been realized reasonably using Savart plate and spatial light modulators(SLM).A simulation algorithm has also been developed and implemented to prove the authenticity of the proposed circuit through the simulation.

Evaluating Fertilization Effects on Soil Physical Properties Using a Soil Quality Index in an Intensive Rice-Wheat Cropping System

Soil quality assessment has been suggested as an effective tool for evaluating sustainability of soil and crop management practices.The objective of this study was to develop a sensitive soil quality index(SQI) based on bulk density(BD),water-holding capacity(WHC),water-stable aggregates(WSA),aggregate mean weight diameter(AMWD),total organic C(TOC) and C input to evaluate the important rice-wheat cropping system on an Inceptisol in India.A long-term experiment has been conducted for 18 years at the Indian Council of Agricultural Research-Indian Institute of Farming Systems Research,Modipuram,India.The treatments selected for this study were comprised of a no-fertilizer control and N,P and K fertilizers(NPK) combined with Zn and S fertilizers(NPK+ Zn+S),farmyard manure(NPK+FYM),green gram residues(NPK+GR) and cereal residues(NPK+CR),laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications.Soil samples were collected and analyzed for BD,WHC,WSA and TOC.Correlation analysis revealed that both rice and wheat yields signi?cantly increased with the increases in AMWD,TOC and C input,but decreased with the increase in BD.The SQI values were then generated based on regression analysis of BD,WSA,AMWD,TOC and C input with rice and wheat yields for the 0–15 and 15–30 cm soil layers,respectively.Regression analyses between crop yields and SQI values showed a quadratic type of relation with the coeffcient of determination(R^2) varying from 0.78 to 0.89.With regard to soil sustainability,applying crop residues to both rice and wheat could maintain soil quality for a longer period,whereas the highest yields of both the crops were recorded in the NPK+Zn+S treatment.The regression equations developed in this study could be used to monitor soil quality in a subhumid tropical rice-wheat cropping system.

Real-time spectrum sensing is essential to enable dynamic and rapid spectrum sharing of unused frequencies to cater the substantial demands of new wireless services deploying the existing RF bands.In this paper,we present a novel,real-time spectrum sensing approach for widely used RF signals based on Brillouin-scattering-induced transparency(BIT).A temporal discrimination of multi-channel input frequencies is achieved through the group delay tuning by BIT.By tuning the pump power and frequency,the proposed technique is fully reconfigurable and viable for a broad range of spectrum sensing.Several experimental illustrations of the time domain sensing are presented for two-tone channels with 0.9,1.8,and 5 GHz frequencies to detect the unused spectrum within 3 G,4 G,and 5 G signals.
