Sex-dependent resilience to extreme drought events: implications for climate change adaptation of a South American endangered tree species

Background Recent changes in climatic trends are resulting in an increased frequency and intensity of extreme events, with unknown effect on ecosystem dynamics in the near future. Extreme drought episodes are recognized as disturbance factors capable of modifying forest dynamics and tree growth. Within this context, dioecious tree species may be impacted by climatic extremes, affecting male/female proportions and, consequently, reproductive processes and species persistence. Therefore, there is an urgent need for species-specific assessments of growth tolerance to extreme dry spells in dioecious tree species, to establish effective conservation strategies for these particular natural resources. Araucaria araucana(araucaria), an endangered dioecious Patagonian tree species, has recently undergone decay and mortality episodes in response to increasing dry climatic conditions. While sex-dependent tolerance to extreme drought episodes has been assessed in the species' humid distribution range, there is still a lack of information on the gender-based resilience of trees growing in the drier environments of the species' *** We reconstructed, through dendrochronological methods, the sex-dependent response of 105 araucaria individuals(55 female and 50 male trees) to five regional extreme dry spells employing a set of different indices. Resistance, recovery period, and average growth reduction of standardized tree-ring growth were examined, analysing the effect of biotic(sex, pre-drought stem tree growth) and abiotic(local climatic conditions before, during, and after extreme climatic episodes) factors on tree *** Sex influences only the species resistance to climatic disturbance, with male individuals showing lower tolerance to extreme drought events. The utilization of RAPD and ISSR molecular markers is proposed to initiate studies of genetic variability in Phrynops hilarii（Chelidae） and Trachemys dorbigni（Emydidae）, two species of fresh water turtles distributed in South America. Three primers of RAPD and four of ISSR were selected and the amplified products of these markers were evaluated by electrophoretic runs in agarose and polyacrylamide gels. The levels of heterozygosity, Shannon index and different allele numbers were slightly higher in P. hilarii for both types of markers. Levels of polymorphism were also higher in P. hilarii than T. dorbigni and both were elevated compared to those recorded for other species. The fact that similar results were obtained with both types of markers for all estimates of diversity highlights the usefulness and validity of the RAPD technique. The molecular markers used were found potentially useful for analysing future temporal and spatial distribution of genetic diversity in both species, expanding scales work.

The Angstr6m turbidity coefficient （β） and Linke turbidity factor （TL） are used to study the atmospheric conditions in Wuhan, Central China, using measureβd direct solar radiation during 2010-2011 in this study. The results show that annual mean β values generally increase from 0.28 in the morning to 0.35 at noon, and then decrease to 0.1 in the late afternoon during the day; annual mean TL generally varies from 3 to 7 in Central China. Both turbidity coefficients have maximum values in spring and summer, while minimum values are observed in winter months. It also reveals that β values show preponderance （52.8%） between 0.15 and 0.35, 78.1% of TL values are between 3.3 and 7.7, which can be compared with other sites around the world. Relationship between turbidity coefficients and main me- teorological parameters （humidity, temperature and wind direction） have been further investigated, it is discovered that the local aerosol concentrations, dust events in northern China and Southwest Monsoon from the Indian Ocean influences the β values in the study area.

Die filling is a critical stage during powder compaction,which can significantly affect the product quality and *** this paper,a forced feeder is introduced attempting to improve the filling performance of a lab-scale die filling *** die filling process is analysed with a graphics processing units(GPU)enhanced discrete element method(DEM).Various stirrer designs are assessed for a wide range of process settings(i.e.,stirrer speed,filling speed)to explore their influence on the die filling performance of free-flowing *** results show that die filing with the novel helical-ribbon(i.e.,type D)stirrer design exhibits the highest filling ratio,implying that it is the most robust stirrer design for the feeder configuration ***,die filling performance with the type D stirrer design is a function of the stirrer speed and the filling speed.A positive variation of filling ratio(ηf>0%)can be ensured over the whole range of filling speed by adjusting the stirrer speed(i.e.,increasing the stirrer speed).The approach used in this study can not only help understand how the stirrer design affects the die filling performance but also guide the optimization of feeder system and process settings.

This paper proposes a novel reinforcement learning(RL)architecture for the efficient scheduling and control of the heating,ventilation and air conditioning(HVAC)system in a commercial building while harnessing its de-mand response(DR)*** advances in automated building management systems,this can be achieved seamlessly by a smart autonomous RL agent which takes the best action,for example,a change in HVAC temper-ature set point,necessary to change the electricity usage pattern of a building in response to demand response signals,and with minimal thermal comfort impact to *** research in this area has tackled only individual aspects of the problem using ***,due to the challenges in implementing demand response with whole-building models,simpler analytical models which poorly capture reality have been used *** where whole-building models are applied,RL is used for HVAC control mainly to achieve energy efficiency goals while demand response is ***,in this research,we implement a holistic framework by designing an efficient RL controller for a whole-building model which learns to optimise and control the HVAC system for improved energy efficiency and thermal comfort levels in addition to achieving demand response *** simulation results show that by applying reinforcement learning for normal HVAC operation,a maximum weekly energy reduction of up to 22%can be achieved compared to a handcrafted baseline ***,by employing a DR-aware RL controller during demand response periods,average power reductions or increases of up to 50%can be achieved on a weekly basis compared to the default RL controller,while keeping occupant thermal comfort levels within acceptable bounds.

AIM: To evaluate the in vivo effect of glutamine on cobaltgenerated oxidative stress and (HO-1) induction in rat ***: Fasted female Wistar rats received a single injection of cobalt chloride (375 μmol/kg body weight) and then were killed at different times. Lipid peroxidation and soluble and enzymatic antioxidant defense system (reduced glutathione (GSH), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) and superoxide dismutase (SOD)) were measured in liver homogenates. Ferritin and ferritin iron contents as well as heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) activity and expression were also determined. The antioxidant properties of glutamine (Gin) were also evaluated. RESULTS: Cobalt chloride increased lipid peroxidation (50% over control values) 1 h after treatment. GSH reached a minimum at 3 h (40%) increasing thereafter. Twelve hours after CoCl2 injection, the antioxidant enzymes CAT, GSH-Px and SOD also diminished by about 30%. Heme oxygenase-1 induction was observed 6 h after treatment reaching a maximum value of 14-fold over the controls, 12 h after cobalt treatment. A 1.7-fold increase in ferritin and ferritin-bound iron 24 h after treatment were also obtained. Administration of glutamine (300 mg/kg body weight) by gavage 24 h before CoCl2 treatment entirely prevented the increase in thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) content, the decrease in GSH levels, and partially reverted heme oxygenase-1 induction. CONCLUSION: These results suggested that a natural product such as glutamine prevents glutathione depletion and consequently heme oxygenase induction.
